Saratoga's Opening i i , ( i 1 , , SARATOGA'S OPENING. Saratoga, N. Y., August 4. That Saratoga is destined to become the Mecca of the American turf where the great racing interests of the future will center once a year to watch their respective cham- : pions battle for supremacy is assured. The enormous crowd of devotees which journeyed to the magnificent race course completely filled the new grand stand with its seating capacity of six thousand. About seventy layers cut in including "Kid" Weller, who was, however, not permitted to do business by order of the stewards. He sat behind Joe Ullman during the afternoon and presumably engaged in posting prices and was not molested further. Jim Davis, of California, was also a newcomer. Almost every prominent turfman in the country was present, among which were John W. Gates, John A. Drake, Senator O'Brien, J. W. Schorr and Charles Bush from the west; W. Hendrie, president'of the Canadian Jockey Club, and August Belmont, chairman of the Jockey Club, and a large following of the fashionable world from New York, Newport, Long Branch, Bar Harber and elsewhere, including Washingfon, D. C. The running of the western champions, Articulate and Judith Campbell, was brilliant. So much so that in the case of the last named W. C. Whitney has already made overtures to her owner for her possession, having offered $20,000, and it is probable that her nest appearance will be in the colors of the American Newmarket. R. C. DeB. Lopez' little colt, Articulate, held his own in a fierce final furlong drive today against the gigantic Advance Guard, which is about the highest praise that can be bestowed upon him. The volume of betting today was comparatively light, moro noticeable on the part of the western contingent from which so much was expected. Senator McCarren probably dropped $50,000 on the day by the defeat of Mackey Dwyer and Bluff. The last named was plunged upon for a stupendous sum, only to be downed by the westerner, Vin-cennes, which carried a commission (presumably Drake's) of $3,000, which was entrusted to Sol Lichtenstein. He only placed a moderate wager of $1,000 on Articulate, which receded in the betting. As an echo of the operations in the Brighton ring Saturday, Club Commissioner Fellows offered Wheelock $5,000 at evens on Major Daingorfield, which was accepted. A moment later Wheelock called Fellows back and requested him to go out and inform his people that he was in humor to lay against him indefinitely, with the result that another $15,000 was forthcoming from the same quarter, and probably the largest single wager on a horse race in recent years was registered that day. Bookmaker Wheelock had a phenomenally suc-, cessful day betting on six straight winners and a hundred thousand dollars was a conservative 63ti-, mate the ring placed upon his winnings. Roehampton has bowed a tendon and will be re-, tired for the season. Saratoga Form Chart : ! SARATOGA FORM CHART. SARATOGA, N. Y., August 4. First day. The Saratoga Association. Bummer Meeting. Won easily ; second the same. Francesco is a crackerjack, patiently waited on Blues to the stretch, where he went to the front like alflash and was easily best at the weights. Herbert, nearly left, but favored by cuppy going, gradually closed an immense gap and finished like a whirlwind. Articulate put up a first-class performance at the weights and stuck to his work in remarkably game fashion at tha end'to stand off Advance Guard and Carbuncle, which were closing up very fast. Advance Guard was handicapped by the soft going as against Articulate and Carbuncle, both being particularly favored by it. Blues quit in the last furlong after going a fast mile and will improve. Rose Tree, which won the Garden City Stakes yesterday, is the first horse in the Corrigan stable to score brackets in a stake for the ex-master of Hawthorne since his return from England. 4 Jockey Ranch complained to the judges after the fifth race that jockey Helgesen, who rode Scarlet Lily, had crowded into his mount on the first turn. Judge Hamilton fined Helgesen $25 and cautioned the rider against future rough riding. C E. Durnell claimed St. Cuthbert, which finished second in the first race. The price he had to pay for him was $1,570. G. C. Bennett's horses will be sent to St. Louis to race at the coming Kinloch Park meeting. P. J. Gorman arrived yesterday from St. Louis. He only shipped Jack Rattlin and Jim Clark to Chicago. The former started in The Garden City Stakes yesterday and Jim Clark will be a starter in The Maywood Handicap, which will be run at Harlem Saturday. Jockey W. Hunt, who had the mount on Porphyr-ogene in the steeplehase, had his collar bone broken when the horse fell at the Liverpool jump. Ravensbnry, the winner of the closing race, entered to be sold for $600, was bid up to $900 by R. McMillan. S. C Hildreth, his owner, retained him by an additional bid of $100. v Jockey Battiste came down from St. Louis to ride Jack Rattlin in The Garden City Stakes. The rider returned to the Mound City last night. Gossip of the Turf GOSSIP OF THE TURF. As a result of a decision rendered Friday by the stewards at Brighton Beach, Mara, the steeplechase jockey, may accept any mountB he sees fit to in future. They held that the contract with Joseph E, Widener is void, it not having been registered with the Jockey Club or the National Hunt and Steeplechase Association. Mara has not ridden for more than a week, J. Howard Lewis, the trainer of the Widener stable, having set him down. The contract provided that Mara could not accept outside mounts without the permission of the stable, and an effort was made to enforce the provision. Mara appealed the matter to the stewards, and Mr. Widener was requested to give his version and produce the contract. The stewards saw the document, and after learning from Mr. Crickmore that it was not registered informed Mara that he was not bound by the agreement. Mara says that he will now accept outside mounts. Robert L. Baker, of the racing firm of Baker & Gentry, has purchased from Mrs. J. B. Ferguson the entire Kingston stud of 250 acres together with two stallions, brood mares and sucklings for $36,600. The stallions are St. George and Prince Royal. St. George is the sire of Lucien Appleby. Aladdin, South Trimble, Lady Wadsworth, Brissac and the two-year-old winners this year, Mamie Worth, Dolly Gray and Step Around. Prince Royal is the sire of the eastern Oom Paul, Merry Prince, Yankee Doodle, Dr. Walmsley, W. B. Gates and the frequent two-year-old winner Seize. Harlem Form HARI.E1VI FORM. Harlem started its midsummer meeting yesterday with a splendid card and a big gathering. The feature attraction of the day, the Garden City Stakes, was taken in impressive fashion by Ed Cor-rigan's fast mare Rose Tree, which ran one of the fastest six furlongs of the year negotiating the distance in 1 :12 and beating so fast a sprinter as Burnie Bunton. Fifteen of the fastest horses now in training in the west faced the barrier, making the field unwieldy but Dwyer got them off to an excellent start with Death, Wainamoinen and Burnie Bunton thefirst three off. Nearing the first quarter Money Muss darted to the front and opened up a gap of two and a half lengths, with Burnie Bunton four in front of Rose Tree and the rest well strung out. There was little change in these positions until just after turning for home, where Money Muss fell rapidly away beaten and Burnie Bunton assumed what appeared a winning lead. In the laBt sixteenth Rose Tree moved up fast and coming with an irresistible rush gradually wore down Burnie Bunton, beating her easily to the wire by one length with Wainamoinen a poor third. The last named finished stoutly, nipping the tiring Toah a head on the post for third place. The latter tired perceptibly in the closing strides. A. D. Gibson was moving fast at the end. The race was strictly a three-horse affair throughout. The stake was worth $3,340 to the winner. Ed Corrigan's consistent sprinter L'Etrenne, the favorite in the betting, took the day's opener without much trouble. St. Cuthbert, closely attended by Theory, set a hot pace for five furlongs, but in the final eighth Birkenruth brought up L'Etrenne with a rush and, getting through next to the inside rail, won handily by a length. St. Cuthbert finished second, two and one-half lengths before Winter, which finished fast, beating Andes out a half length for third place. Theory tired fast in the last eighth. Dick Welles, which runs to his best form on a fast track, was in an easy spot in the second race, a dash of five furlongs. At flag-drop he rushed to the front and simply ran away from the field, winning by four lengths, not fully extended, from Sidney C. Love, which beat Mirance two and a half for second place. The last named finished strongly. Bay Wonder showed speed, but tired badly after running four furlongs. Watoma showed scant speed and ran nowhere near to the form she is known to possess. Over Land and Sea was practically left at the post. Walter Cleary is probably the best and most consistent jumper that has performed here this year. He took the short course steeplechase with ridiculous ease, gradually going away from the field after the ninth jnmp had been taken and winning(in a big canter by line lengths. Old Fox was much the I best of the others, finishing second twelve lengths in front of Falella. The jockey that rode Anchor was the cause of much merriment among the spectators during the race. He clung on for dear life and rolled all over the horse, which showed speed, and was so exhausted in the final eighth that he slipped off the horse's back just after passing the wire. Porphyrogene fell over the ninth jump and Helen Paxton lost her rider there. The greatest surprise of the day was the defeat of Waswift in the fifth race, Bon Mot beating him handily. Waswift was held at 2 to 5 in the betting, but even at these short odds was heavily backed. He led for seven fnrlongs, where"Woods brought up Bon Mot and after a short brush in the last sixteenth, gradually drew away winning by a length. Marcos finished a beaten-off third. He tired fast in the laBt eighth. Autumn Leaves ran a bad race and was only a contender for a half mile. Her race was too bad to be true and should be thrown out of future calculations. Scarlet Lily, with her light impost, took the sixth race in a canter by four lengths from Favonius, which beat Orontas a half for second place, Scarlet Lily showed much speed and the result was never in doubt. Ed Adack was a keen contender for almost a mile, but quit badly when the pinch came. Orontas moved up fast when turning into the last quarter, but for some unaccountable reason tired palpably when hooked with Favonius for the second place struggle. Ravensbury took the finale by a neck from Tammany Chief, which finished three lengths before Hayward Hunter for second place. Tammany Chief's reversal of form was surprising. Miracle II. gave up the struggle when the pinch came and the same may be said of Peat. A crowd of at least 10,000 was present and witnessed a splendid day's sport. The track was at its best and fast time was made throughout the afternoon's sport. Bonnibert's Race BONNIBERT'd RACE. LaBt Wednesday, Bonnibert, running at Brighton Beach, put on record a grand performance at a I mile and an eighth, which was thus described by Charles E. Trevathan in the Morning Telegraph : "Frank Farrell's Bonnibert, four years old, by Albert Bonnie Ola, ran a mile and a furlong yesterday at Brighton Beach in 1 :51 fiat, and becomes, through that performance, the champion horse of the country at the distance. "The previous record for the route was 1:51, held jointly by Water Cure and Roehampton, each of these accomplishing the feat in his three-year-old form. Water Cure set the mark in 1900 with 100 pounds on him. Roehampton followed the next season with 94 pounds on him. Yesterday's per-, formance is so far and away beyond the runs made by these two that there is no possible comparison "When a horse of any age takes up 120 pounds and breaks a record he is alone. Record holders who have carried no more than a feather in their record performances are not to be seriously considered. But 120 pounds in these days is a racehorse's weight, and Bonnibert took up that load and set a mark which will stand for a long time. "That all three of these runs were made on the Brighton Beach track further substantiates the oft repeated statement that it is the fastest racecourse, in the east, if not in the country. "This Bonnibert race was worth traveling miles to see. He had no picnic in the finishing of his record-breaking purpose. He had another good horse looking him in the eye when he got to the wire. Tom Kenny, that overnighter of recent excellence, was right there with him, and the backers of Kenny had no grumbling word after they saw what he had made Bonnibert do to beat him. " It was a great race from the break to the wire. Contend was a wild horse at the post, and when the barrier lifted to a fair break Contend shot out in front to make it a quarter race. The pace was terrific from the first. The furlong was put down in 12J seconds, the quarter in 23, the three furlongs in 35 and the half in 4875. At that point Contend was still leading, with Bonnibert, Tom Kenny and Ten Candles a length apart behind him. "Almost immediately after passing the half mile ground Martin began to move Bonnibert to the front, and at the middle of the turn Bonnibert and Contend were on even terms. Then Bonnibert took a commanding lead. The pace at which he must have run around the second turn was awful, for, with Contend doing a mile in 1 :38, this fellow was able to close a length of daylight and to finish: the quarter with a clear lead of two lengths. It was by that margin that he entered the stretch. "Contend was done when the straight was reached, and Tom Kenny made a try to catch the leader. The pace had told upon Bonnibert, and at the end of the mile he was willing to go home. Martin sat down and began to ride him hard. Tom Kenny was coming from behind with a rush. There was a ding dong finish between these two, Bonnibert lasting out to win by half a length. Tom Kenny was gaining on him every stride in the final hundred yards,. Contend was third. "It was a horse race to rouse the most phlegr--matic observer, and yet Bonnibert did not get so great a hand as is frequently given to a close fit winner of a selling race. It will be some time before another one comes along that will take up such weight and run such a race, and Bonnibert must be called a high class horse. His race makes him a possibility in any sort of company at Saratoga. Tom Kenny ran a smashing race himself, though he had up but 105 pounds.
