CHICAGO, SUNDAY, AUGUST 17, 1902. PRICE 5 CENTS John Bright's Good Race JOHN BRIGHT'S GOOD RACE. The good drainage system in use at Harlom oused the track to dry oat fast yesterday, so that hy the time the crowd had assembled to witness the sport horses in their preliminaries were throwing dust from their heels. This condition of the coarse was good enough to warrant the starting of horses that ran only to their best form on dry going, and the Harlem stakes, the feature event of the day had but three scratches out of the thirteen scheduled to start. It was a dash of one and one-eighth miles, for three-year-olds and upward, with $3,500 added. S. C. Hildreth's entry, consisting of McChesney and Hermencia was made the favorite at 31 to 1 and was well backed at these figures, but the beat it could do was for McChesney to run third, the winner turning up in John Bright, backed heavily by a select few. After a delay of eight minutes at the post the field was sent away to a fair start, with Flora Pomona in the lead closely pressed by Haviland, with the others well up. Going down the backstretch Flora Pomona fell away beaten, Aladdin assuming command,, with Haviland second and .Nitrate third. Little change toot place'' in the'se'positiohs until well'int o"the'finHl quarter where Winkfield, who had been lying within easy distance of the leaders up to this point on John Bright, called on his mount, which responded with a rneh, easily moving into the lead in the last sixteenth and winning by three lengths going away. Aladdin began to tire in the last sixteenth, bnt lasted long enough to beat the fast finishing McChesney a head for eecond place. The latter met with ill luck throughout, and with any kind of elaar sailing would undoubtedly have given the winner an argument. Haviland ceased to be a serious contender in the last eighth. Nitrate was right there for a mile and a sixteenth, but the track was just a shade too slow for him to show at his best. Six Shooter made a quick move up just before turning into the stretch, but failed to respond when called upon in the final eighth. Flying Torpedo ran an unaccountably bad race, showed scant speed and was beaten off all the way. The day's opener proved an easy thing for Somersault, which ran Howendobler into submission in the first five farlongs and then came away, winning by two lengths from Irma's Choice, which just got up in time to nip Ben Frost on the post by a head for second place. Queen of Dixiana, all tangled up at the start, had little chance when she got clear sailing. The second race was marred by a poor start, Small Talk being left at the post and Hattie Walker having but little chance from where she got off. Ahola, cleverly ridden by Ranch, ran second to Vestry for the first quarter, but when well straightened for home took an easy commnnd, winning by one and a half lengths from Vestry, which beat the fast-finishing Hattie Walker a half for second placo. Vostry tired fast in the last sixteenth. Lucien Appleby put up another good performance at a mile, winning The Owners' Handicap by a half length from Autumn Leaves, which beat Favonius seven for second place. The winner was slow about getting into his stride, but after the first half had been run closed up fast, gotting on even terms with Autumn Leaves when a sixteenth from home. After that it was an easy matter. Autumn Leaves ran a good race, but was simply outclassed by the winner. Favonius was beaten after running well up for a half mile. Lass of Langden was much the best at the weights in the fifth, race, a dash of six furlong-:. She and Ed Adack ran as one horse to the last eighth post, where he tired, and sho bad little trouble about coming away and winning by three lengths from Huachuca, which beat the fast finishing Gold Bell a head for second place. Huachuca tired fast in the closing strides and would have lost second position in a few more strides. Topsoil ran well up for a quarter, but fell away beaten before the head of the stretch had been reached. He runs best through the mud. Muresca simply played with the field in the sixth race, a daah of six and one-half furlongs. Off none too well she worked her way to the front after the first quarter had been run and easily held command thereafter, winning by two and one-half lengths from Haydon, which beat Ida V., one and one-half for second place. The last race of the present meeting was taken by Compass, by one length from About, which finished the same distance in front of Pirate's Queen for second place. About appeared the winner whan a furlong ont, but tired fast in the closing strides. Strangest showed scant speed and was never in the hunt. A crowd of at least 10,000 persons was on hand and witnessed one of the best day's sport seen here in some time. The betting was heavy and spirited throughout the day. Clear, cool weather and a steady sunshine dried the track out so fast that it was in pretty fair shape when the fourth race was run. Harlem Statistics HARIiEDI STATISTICS. Skilful received a lucky start and clear sailing, followed the pacemaker closely and drew to the front a furlong out and just lasted out under a vigorous finish. Athel broke slowly, but otherwise was well placed; finished with a rush and ran a high-class race. Charles Elwood, away in front, was outran early, but closed up strongly iu the last quarter. Africander, also outrun early, made up much ground in the last half and finished fast. Sailmaker finished with a rush. Judith Campbell tired in the last furlong, after showing the way to the stretch and appearing a winner when straightened for the wire. Whitechapel got away badly and was messed about early. He is a slow beginner and was compelled to come on the outside to get clear sailing, ran a remarkable middle half and the effort tired him. Maxnic got away badly and was raced hopelessly wide on the turns. Grantsdale was practically left. Acefull was thrown against the fence at the half and was pulled up. Chuctanunda outclassed his field and is probably the horse of the year. He trailed within striking distance of the 1 pacemakers hard held, rushed to the front when called upon on the stretch turn and was oasing almost to a walk at the end. Knight of Rhodes is in rare form, forced a terrific pace for six furlongs, but was passed by the winner in the stretch and apparently about to retire, when he came unexpectedly 'with a brilliant burst of speed in the last hundred yards. Morningside finished fast and ran a high class, game race. Bonnibert, away badly, trailed the field under a pull and closed up from last place to a close fourth in a furloug and ran a phenomenal last quarter. Whiskey King was ridden a waiting race and was forced into the fence on the backstretch and Redfern was seriously hurt, in spite of which the colt put up a fine effort. The feature of the day's racing was tho marvelous speed displayed by Chuctannnda, winner of the Delaware Handicap. He practically cantered tho mile journey in 1:8 flat and far outclassed his opponents, composed of one of the best fields of horses in train ing. The race was marred in a measure by crowding and general foul riding, which took place on the backstretch, and Whiskey King was tho chief sufferer. Redfern was injured by coming in collision with the fence and was unable to ride out his engagements. Lyne, on Dublin, was at fault and was set down for four days. Sensational rumors wero afloat that important action was meditated by the stewards which would seriously affect the standing of one or more of the star jockeyB that had mounts in the race. Shaw's foul riding tactics on Bonnibert was said to bo under investigation. A much needed reform in this present system of patrolling tho racecourse during tho running of the races will bo introduced and hereafter competent patrol judges will probably be stationed at every furlong pole. The United States Hotel Stakes, won by C. R. Ellison's recont purchase, Skilful, was worth $14,730, of which tho winner's share amounted to $11,480, and the stable commission at odds of 30 to 1 was a large ouo. It was, however, a lucky victory in view of Athols breakdown a furlong from the finish. Swif t-lyafameS another unfortunnte, pulling up hopeless- J. Fleischmann sold his fast filly Intervention to W. Local Turf Gossip LOCvl, TURF GOSSIP. Steoplochaso jockey L. Lloyd, who rode Helen Paxton last Wednesday, when she scored an easy victory, was yesterday ruled off the turf by the judges for his assault on a night watchman at the Harlem track. "Rome" Respess will ship, during the coming week, all his horses in training to Buffalo, N. Y., to participate in the meeting which begins there August 30. "Buck" Franklin, the well known trainer who but recently recovered from a serious spell of sickness, is again reported to be in a dangerous state of health. Jockeys Helgesen, J. Walsh and Winelett were each fined $25 by the starter in the stake race for disobedience at the post. John Mayberry, who trains for C. R. Ellison, received a tologram from the latter stating that he had won well over tho victory of Skilful in tho United States Hotel Stakes and that most of his money was placed at 30 to 1. Fred Cook's black horse, The Monk, by Lord Esterling-Doubt, dropped dead after working a mile yesterday morning at the Harlem track. The judges at Harlem are still investigating the ride put up by Hicks on About, and will, in all probability, reach a decision during the early part of next week. E. Corrigan has purchased from E. Trotter, for breeding purposes, the bay mare Peace. She is at present in foal to Sam Phillips, winner of the St. Louis Derby in 1900. Starter Dwyer leaves tonight for St. Louis to do the starting during the next two weeks at Kinloch Park. J. J. Holtman, who is at present doing the starting there, will arrive in Chicago Monday and will wield the flag at Hawthorne. Hawthorne Features HAWTHOENF, FJEATUKES The Chicago Jockey Club will run off the remainder of its term, twenty-four days, at its own track at Hawthorne, which has not been used since the fire which swept away the grandstand, paddock and betting ring on Decoration Day; Owing to rain and tho scarcity of labor, woik n the new buildings is not so far advanced as it was expected it would bo at this time, but tho clm will live up to its announcement and re-open tomorrow. All it promises is "rough, dry and clean" accommodations to its patrons, feeling that the devotees of the sport, appreciating the circumstances, will net mind "roughing it" for a fortnight or so. In lien of shingles the roof of tho grandstand will be covered with oiled tarpaulin, making it waterproof. As the betting ring and cafe are under the grandstand they are thoroughly protected fro rain.. Tho floor of tho betting ring, for the tim being, will bo of hard rolled cinders. Eventually it will be of cement. Tho secretary and his staff will do their work in an improvised office for the first two weeks, or until a paddock is built. A corral may take the place of a saddling paddock, or tho owners and trainers may bo permitted to saddle anywhere they please within sound of tho bell and buglo. Speaking of this primitive arrangement, a director of the club said the other day: "The enclosed paddock as wo know it now did not come into use until comparatively a few years ago. Among the improvements made at Saratoga for this year is a paddock that cost $20,000, but most of the owners prefer to saddle their horses under the trees, as they have been doing since the Saratoga track was first opened." Up to 1894 the horses racing at Hawthorne were for the most part saddled in the infield or at tho stables. No stringent paddock rules were enforced anywhere before that time. During the first week of the fortnight's session, which will open Monday, three stakes will be run; ono of them tho Northern Handicap atono and one-quarter miles, the richest and most important event in the Hawthorne season. Tho Northern closed with oighty-seven entries and all tho high-class handicap horses that raced in the west this season as well as many in tho east aro eligible to start. Among the possible starters are Argrogor, Aladdin, McChosuoy, John Bright, Six Shooter, Scarlet Lily and Flyiog Torpedo. John A. Drake may send back Wyeth for tho race, and R. A. Smith may take a shy at it with Articulate. The stake with ten starters will have a gross value of $7,240. The Speculation Handicap at one mile and a sixteenth will be tho opening feature. The Midsummer Sellipg Stakes for two-year-olds will be run on Thursday, and tho Northern on Saturday. NOTICE. IMily Racing Fobm is a publication which is bnilt by its staff from day to day.
