VIII. yp. 198. CHICAGO, TUESDAY, AUGUST 19, 1902. PRICE 5 CENTS Hawthorne's Good Opening HAWTHORNE'S GOOD O PEKING. The midsummer meeting at Hawthorne yesterday opened auspiciously, the pleasant weather drawing out one of the largest Monday gatherings of the season, bar Washington Park. The spacious grandstand, which is almost three times the size of the old structure, was filled to repletion. The building is not quite finished as yet, but probably will be in a few days. It is undoubtedly one of the prettiest and most commodious in the country and is a big improvement on the double-decker that was destroyed by fire last spring. Of the racing it must be said that the day's sport was fruitful of several big surprises, the victories of Little Scout and Jane Holly being the most notable. The former won the Speculation Handicap, a dash of one and a sixteenth miles for three-year-olds and upward with $1,500 added. Of the fifteen scheduled to start, eight dodged the issue, but the adding of Artena made up a field of eight to face the barrier. The Corrigan entry, consisting of Rose Tree and Artena, was made a decided first choice, being held at 6 to 5 in the betting, while as good as 10 to 1 could be had against Little Scout, To a poor start, in which Piederich was virtually left at the post, Roso Tree shot to the front, closely pressed by Hunter Baine and Harry New. Little change took place in these positions until well down the back-stretch, where Hunter Baine began to fall back and Corrigan moved up. Bose Tree still had a slight advantage when turning for home, where there was a general closing up, but in the laBt eight Coburn, who had always been lying within easy distance of the leaders with Little Scout, called on his mount and the colt responded with fine speed. In the last sixteenth Harry New moved up on even terms with Little Scout, the two contesting every foot of the distance to the wire, but Coburn's vigorous and determined finish prevailed, Little Scout winning by a short head. Harry New finished two lengths before Artena. The latter finished fast. Bose Tree was well spent when a furlong from home. Bon Mot ran a dull race and was never a serious contender. Piederich ran an excellent race from where he got off. Corrigan showed well for seven furlongs, but needs the mud or a soft track to run to his best -form. Hunter Baine appear to have trained off. The stake was worth $2,185 to the winner. Jane Holly, held at 50 to 1 in the betting in the fifth race, furnished one of the biggest surprises of the year. She has shown to poor advantage since her first start and really appeared to have but a remote chance on recent form. It was a dash of seven furlongs in which some good sprinters faced the barrier. Off well in her stride she rushed to the front in a bound and simply spreadeagled the field, winning in a canter by three and a half lengths from Brulare, which beat Gonfalon one for rsecond place. Brulare finished strongly, but simply could;not;cut downithe winner's lead whencalled on in$the last (eighth. Gonfalon'showeri toladvan-tage and is worthy of attentionjlfrom now on. Talpa was runningjfast at the end ana would have been third in another stride. ToahlsimDly could notjconcedolthe weight. Thejsteeplechase over the short course provedan easyjlthingf'for MacLaren, Jbnt Dr. Nowlin would probably have given him a jspiritedargument had he notibeen badlyijinterferea with by MacLaren in the lastilsixteenth, the latter cutting acrossflhim and compelling this jockeyto pull him up. Mac-Larenljled fromSatart to finish, jumping cleanly throughout and winning by one and half lengths, while Dr. Nowlin finished six before Captain Con-over for second place. Golden Link fell over the sixth jump, Old Fox over the nintn and Helen Pax-ton lost her rider over the last. The first race of the day resulted in a rattling finish between Federal and Elsie L., the former getting up in time to wiu by a short head on the post in a desperate driye. Elsie L. led for the first five and a half furlongs and appeared "the winner, but Buchanan brought up Federal under a resolute drive along in here and gradually wore her down. Nickey D. ran a poor third, tiring fast in the last eighth, up to which point ho had been a keen contender. Ahola, showing much gameness under a steady drive, proved to be the beBt of a field of two-year-olds in the second race, a dash of five furlongs. She laid along a close third to Goodman and Au Revoir until well into the last quarter, where she came away gradually and had an advantage of one length over. Au Bevoir at the end. The latter beat The Picket a half length for second place. Goodman ran in improved form and is worthy of consideration from now on. Jerry tired fast when the pinch came. The last race of the day went to th heavily-backed favorite, Lingo, which led all the way and won as her rider pleased by three and a half lengths from Dark Secret, which beat Santa Teresa one and a half for second place. A crowd of between 7,000 and 8,000 was present and enjoyed an excellent day's sport. The track, although hard and dusty, lacked springiness, probably on account of long disuse. In case of no rain it should be good and fast today. Saratoga Form Chart SARATOGA FORM CHART. SARATOGA, N. Y., August 18, 1902. Thirteenth day. The Saratoga Association. Summer Meeting. Douro and Baron Pepper are both proven stayers and high-class cup horses. Douro was superbly ridden, had clear sailing and a powerful finish won out for him. Baron Pepper, at a great disadvantage in acting as pacemaker and failing to force the pace, was best at the weights and going fastest at the end after falling back when a furlong out. Ethics, unlucky and compelled to race wide on the turn, put up a good, game race in going slightly against him. Saratoga Gossip SARATOGA "GOSSIP. Saratoga, N. Y., August 18. It was remarked today that the Farrell-Welch combination failed to put up Shaw, their regular jockey, on The Musketeer and Blues. His peculiar looking ride on Bon-nibert in the Delaware Handicap, won by Chuctan-unda last Saturday, it is rumored, is still under investigation by the stewards. E. K. Wheeler started his newly -acquired KingstonCatherine II. colt, Orloff, in the first race today and won him out ten times over. David Johnson lost a $20,000 wager today on Blues, on which he accepted 1 to 8. Blues was supposed to be a cartainty today, but the story tonight is that he has turned sore and sulky and will not work. The handicapper allotted Blues 130 pounds in the Citizens' and Merchants' Handicap to be run tomorrow, yet today Hun-tressa beat him when nearly everybody at the track thought the race a foregone conclusion and most of the betting was on the place horses. Bullman was suspended for one day and fined $30 for misbehavior at the post in the race won by The Musketeer, in which that horse made the best time on record over a track called circular, but which has a "chiite." The race was run in 1:25. The best previous time was made by Chuctanunda, on Thursday last, in 1:25, but some years ago Clifford ran the distance in the same time over the Sheepshead Bay course. Fifteen acres of land near the course here has been purchased by Mr. Whitney and will be devoted to the erection of stables sufficient to accommodate some 600 yearlings, the idea being that at least twice that number will be in future years sold here, the success of Charles Reed's yearling sale, as well as of Clarence Mackay's sale, encouraging the asso" ciation in this belief. Although money enough has been made at this meeting to declare a forty per cent dividend on the capital stock, only six per cent will be paid to stockholders, the remainder going for improvements. Much interest is felt in tomorrow's two-year-old race in which John A. Drake's Savablo will meet Flying Prince, Merry Reel, which Madden declares will win the Futurity, and Blue Eibbon, the colt which close observers say was badly hamperad by Irish Lad in the last furlong of the Saratoga Special. The rider of Baron Pepper in today's race claimed to the stewards that Burns, on Douro, had ridden him so close to the rail all the way through the stretch as to prevent him from turning, but the stewards dismissed the claim. In this race Mike Dwyer had 7,500 on Ethics, and the horse might have won but for coming out wide on the home turn. The acrobatic performances, that Helen Paxton has shown in her last four races were the direct cause of the suspension of E. B. Rodgers' stable by the Hawthorne judges yesterday. In addition to suspending the stable, jockey Downs, who rode Helen Paxton in the steeplechase yesterday, will not be permitted to accept any more'mounts for an indefinite period. Jockey Coburn was given a severe lecture by Judge Trevelyan after the second race for carrying Ahola out on the stretch turn. The rider stated that his mount had run out and that the mishap was unintentional. Jockey McAuliffe, who rode Dr. Nowlin and fin-' ished second in the steeplechase, lodged a com" plaint with the judges that MacLaren, the winner, had impeded his mount's progress after going over the last obstacle. Judge Trevelyan questioned the riders who had finished in the first flight closely and allowed the result of the race to stand, giving as his reason that the interference was not a sufficient cause to change the placing of the horses. Notes of the Turf NOTES OF THE TURF. John E, Madden is said to be very sweet on the work which Jockey Lucien Lyne is doing at Saratoga. Rumor has it that he is negotiating with Sanford C. Lyne, father of the lad, for a contract for next year. The present contract with John A. Drake doesn't expire until December 1. The get of August Belmont's stallion Hastings have won thirty-eight races and a total of $76,945 this season. Secretary James Howard of the Washington Park Clnb is at Saratoga recuperating and, incidentally, taking in the races. R. T. Wilson Jr.'s big colt, Flying Buttress, was taken out of the third race at Saratoga Saturday by M. J. Cavanaugh for $2,080. Twelve yearlings from Barney Schreiber's Woodlands Stud were sold in the paddock at Kinloch Park Saturday and brought a total of $6,925, an average of $577 a head. The top price was $1,500, paid by Albert Simons for the brown filly by Sain Jennie McFarland. Hawthorne Form HAWTHORNS FORM. "Mr. Whitney paid $50,000 for Nasturtium to the former bootblack, A. L. Asto. Nasturtium wintered at Westbury and all the turf world knows that the son of Watercress is now a 'roarer' and will never race again. He paid $30,000 for Endurance by Right, 'the greatest filly since Miss Woodford,' and the sea fogs got into her throat and made a 'roarer' of her. Blue Girl had the Westbury influenza and narrowly escaped the fate of Nasturtium and Endurance by Right. The best yearlings that Mr. Whitney owned last year, horses with which he hoped to win many of the rich two-year-old stakes this year, fell sick and died at Westbury, so that any hope he may have had of winning the English Derby with Nasturtium or of sweeping the boards in this country, were blasted before the racing season began on either side of the Atlantic," says a Saratoga letter to the Sun of Friday. "This winter the Whitney horses will have winter quarters at Aiken, S. C, where Mr. Whitney has a winter place. He has a number of box stalls there, and many more will be built before it is time to send the horses to the stable for the winter. Aiken I is on high ground ; it is a place where people go in search of health, and Mr. Whitney sees no reason why it should not be a great place for horses. At any rate, it is bound to be better than Westbury. "Two of the famous wrecks of Westbury Nasturtium and Endurance by Right are now here. Nasturtium arrived from the Wheatley Hills yesterday and Endurance by Right, now a splendid three-year-old filly, an far as looks go, will leave here tomorrow for La Belle Farm, Mr. Whitney's Kentucky breeding establishment, where she will be installed as one of the matrons. This will be news to most turfmen, as it has been thought that the splendid daughter of Inspector B. might again carry the colors of her owner to victory. But after waiting patiently for several months, Mr. Whitney has become convinced that tke filly will never again have good wind, and so she is sleeping tonight for the last time on a racetrack. She will be shipped tomorrow morning by fast express to Lexington. It has not yet been decided with what sire she will be mated. " To Nasturtium Saratoga i serving as a health resort. He was Drought here to recuperate .after his severe illness of the past few months. When it was found, after he began training in England for the Derby, that bis -wind was seriously affected, Mr. Whitney ordered that he be sent back to this country and he arrived here in May. He was sent to Westbury and-shortly afterward he was taken with inflammation of the bowels., The pain he suffered was so intense that he became insane for a while, and in his delirium knocked himself about in the stall until he was bruised from head to tail. He is quite over his illness, but the marks of the self-pounding are still in evidence, and he looks little like the Nasturtium which won the Flatbush Stakes for two-year-olds at Sheepshead Bay last year. It was said at the stable this afternoon that if the colt is worked only at a trot his heavy breathing can be heard half way across the track. When he has fully regained his strength he will follow Endurance by Right to La Belle. "A number of yearlings bred by Mr. Whitney arrived here this week. Among the lot is a black filly by Hamburg which is regarded by those critics who have seen her as one of the finest yearlings ever seen in the north. She is almost the exact counterpart of her great sire. She has the short back, the well-rounded quarters and the great depth of shoulders and chest of Hamburg, and has even the forelegs that one who ever saw Hanover's greatest son can never forget. There is also among the yearlings a son of Meddler, bigger and stronger than the usual run of Meddler colts from which great things are expected. "Mr. Whitney beHeves that the trouble at Westbury has been. due, not to the Long Island climate, but to defective construction in his stable. It is too fine for thoroughbreds. The floors of the stalls are of brick. Brick holds dampness. In wet and foggy weather straw that had been put into the stalls bone dry at night would be found to be water-soaked in the morning. That meant, of course, that the horses had lain on wet straw for most of the night. The effect of wet weather on soldiers in camp is well known. Those who should know say that the effect is a hundred fold worse on racehorses. Mr. Whitney is to have the stable altered and he hopes that the existing .defects may be remedied. There , are Jhose, however, who say that the Wheatley Hills section ,pf Long Island is no place in which to winter thoroughbreds, no matter what sort of a stable they havp." Bender 200 Gossip of the Turf GOSSIP OF THE TURF. August Belmont has. decided to winter a large portion of his racing stable at Garnet, g. C, next winter, instead of at his famous place at Babylon, L. I. While he will not entirely abandon the Babylon stables, on account of the fact that his father established them there, it is pretty safe to say that the end of Babylon as winter quarters for Belmont's great Btable is in sight. Every horse which is intended to campaign in the early Bpring next year will spend the cold months at Garnet, where Gloriosa, Toscan and Rosetint wintered last year, and doubtless the early success of these Hastings horses has influenced Mr Belmont in this decision. Mr. Belmont's stable at Garnet will be in charge of John Whalen, who looked after the few Belmont horses that wintered there last year, and it is believed that spending the frosty months in the balmy , air that blows through the southern pihos will do-much to send the horses, now in training, and the yearlings that will be two years old next springs north strong and healthy for the early campaign. There is a three-quarter-mile track on Mr. Belmont's place at Garnet, which is in grand condition most of the winter, and one which the horses from the Nursery Stud, Lexington, sons and daughters of Hastings, Henry of Navarre and Margrave, can" take their exercise on in the months when the days are short and can get their first preparation for the spring stakes. There will have to be a considerable enlargement of the stable accommodations in order to mako room for valuable stock that will be shipped there before the snow flies. Daily America. NOTICE.
