TO. 199. CHICAGO, WEDNESDAY, AUGTIST -0, 1902. PRICE 5 CENTS Surprises at Hawthorne SURPRISES AT HAWTHORNE. Pat Dunne was much in evidence at Hawthorne yesterday, winning with John McGurk and Silurian and getting good prices against both. The former won the feature event of the day, a free handicap purse of $700 for three-year-olds and upward at one and one-eighth miles. He was held at 18 to 5 in the betting and was well backed by the talent. Orontas, at 2i to 1, was well liked by many, but ran a dull race and has evidently trained off. To a good start Scarlet Lily at once rushed to the front, opening up a gap of five lengths while going down tho backstretch, with Favonius second and Jimi-nez third. Little change occurred in these positions until well into the stretch, where Jiminez fell away beaten and Orontas moved up. Coming down the last eighth Scarlet Lily still had a lead of a length over John McGurk, which had begun to make his run along in here. He got on evens terms with her when opposite the paddock gate and beat her handily to tho wire by a neck. Orontas finished third five lengths back. In the closing strides John McGurk always held Scarlet Lily safe, Walsh drawing a fine finish purposely. Orontas tired badly under punishment in the last eighth Btruffglo. -. Jiminez was right there, for a mile, but be is nowhere near the good horse he was last year. Favonius showed well for seven furlongs. Silurian, showing much improvement, took the fifth!race,'a dash'of seven furlongs, in handy fashion at odds of 10 to 1. Joe Frey, closely attended by Constellator and Duelist, showed the way until well into the stretch where he tired fast. Along about the last eighth post Silurian under a vigorous ride by Winkfleld moved up fast winning easily by fa half length from Rolling Boer, which bat Headwater a half for second place. Rolling Boer cams with a great rush at the end after making up much ground in the last quarter. Headwater finished strongly under punishment and displayed sameness. Joe Frey tired fast under punishment in the last eighth and appears to be nowhere near himself. The day's opener, a dash of five and one-half furlongs for two-year-olds, resulted in a stirring finish between Lady Jocelyn and Airtight, the former winning under a skillful and persevering rido by Winkfleld. First Belle Graham and then Adios showed the way, ;the latter havinga lead of two lengths at the last eighth post, but here Lady Jocalyn, under strenuous urging, closed up gradually, winning in a fierce drive by a head from Air-light, which beat Adios a half for second place. Airlight saved ground by going next to the inside when turning for home and finished with great gameness. Adios showed to good advantage, displaying keen speed throughout, but she tired just a trifle in the closing strides. Flocarline, fancied much by the talent, ran a somewhat indifferent race. She fell away apparently badly beaten just before entering the final quarter, but rallied in the last furlong and finished rather strongly. Belle Graham showed a flash of early speed and bears watching. Despite the fact that Lucion Appleby was thought little of by the wiseacres and was as good as 4 to 1 in the botting in the second race, he put up an impressive performance, beating the heavily backed favorito Wainamoinen in handy fashion. Hargis and Wainamoinen ran lapped for the first quarter whero tho latter fell away beaten and Wainamoinen assumod what appeared to be a winning lead, holding an advantage of three lengths over the field in tho final eighth, but here Lucien Appleby moved up with a rush and easily passing her won as his rider pleasod, by two lengths. Wainamoinen beat Bra?g two lengths for second place. Autumn Leaves showed well for six furlongs. Water Edge was right there for almost seven furlongs andbears watching. Judicious proved to be best of an unwieldy bunch in tho third race, a dash.of seven furlongs. Aules, closely pressed by Rod Tip, held command for six furlongs, whero Judicious, which had always been well up moved up fast and passed into the lead, winning easily by three lengths from Matin Bell, which beat Emathion one for second place. Matin Bell was possibly the best. She was pinched out of position soon after the start and receded to last place while going down the backstretch, but in the final half she began to pick up the field gradually and finished with an impressive burst of speed after making up much ground. Red Tip showed improvement and was a sharp contender for six and a half furlongs. Aules tired fast when the last eighth struggle came up. The last race of the day was marred by the leaving at the post of Hayward Hunter, well backed by the smart set. He was standing still when the flag went down. The winner turned up in Little Elkin, which ran a remarkably good race. Down the backstretch he was apparently hopelessly beaten off, but moved up fast in the last quarter, winning by two lengths going away from Edith Q., which finished the same distance in front of Ravens-bury for second place. Edith Q. showed much improvament, and bears watching from now on in the same kind of a field. Ida Y. and Crest showed much speed. A crowd not nearly so largo as that of the first day was present and enjoyed a fair day's sport. The track, although in apparently good condition, is deceptive and is fully three seconds slow, owing to long disuse. It will require two or three days more of good waather to bring it around to its best shape. Noties from Saratoga NOTES FROM SARATOGA. Saratoga. N. Y., August 19 C. H, ("Butch") Thompson died here this morning after a lingering illness of years. He loaves a large estate, the bulk of which was made out of the profits of the famous "White Elephant" poolroom on Broadway, near Thirtieth. It was generally supposed that Inspector Byrnes and Al Smith were associated with him in that enterprise. H. M. Ziegler's useful colt, Bar Le Due was claimed out of the first race today by Father "Bill" Daly for $1,550. In the fifth race H. C. Schulz claimed W. B. Condon and J. L. Holland got Shrine by the same process. Julius Fleischmann gave Irritable away after his breakdown and his new owner, a veterinary surgeon by the name of Johnson, will take him to Canada for breeding purposes. A. Featherstone backed his colt Arsenal very heavily to win the last race of the day and the winner of the Metropolitan Handicap gave evidence of his early good form, but failed simply because he was not "keyed" up for such a bruising race on a difficult and tiring track. Gossip of the Turf GOSSIP OF THE TURF. The yearlings, the property of T. C. Phillips, trainer for Fred Cook, has bought of Milton Young, McGrathiana Stud, tho brown yearling colt by Pirate of Penzance Belle Swift, by Enquirer or Iroquois, for $1,750. He also bought for $5,CO0 of J. V. Shipp, Sunny Slope Stud, the yearling chestnut colt by Knight of Ellerslie Lady Lou, the yearling bay colt by Florist Pocahontas, and four other yearling colts and fillies, three of which are by Victory. He also purchased two yearling colts ofLon Jones of Louisville, both by Florist, at a private figure. Phillips was accompanied by Hiram Scoggan, who aided him in selecting the youngsters he bought for Cook, who proposes to have an extensive racing stable out in 1903. Robert Baker, the steering end of the firm of Baker & Gentry, Lexington, Ky., is determined that there shall be no "pole moving" on his domain. When Baker came into possession of the Kingston Stud, a couple of weeks ago, thoro were some telephone poles on the place. Tho telephone company which had its wires strung on the polos sent a gang of workmen out to Kingston last week with instructions to remove tho shorn pines. Baker objected to the proceeding, contending that when he purchased tho noted breeding establishment ho had received a deed to everything on it, even to the hencoops and their contents. The workmen in. sisted and he had them arrested. They wero released on bond and he hadijthem arrested some more five times more. Baker argues that if the pole holes belong to him he is likewiso the owner of everything that is in the holes. Patrol Judges PATROL JUDGES. At Saratoga five patroljjudges have beeh appointed in addition to the one in service from the outset of the meeting. This is done in a determined effort to have the jockeys under strict surveillance at all points of a race and thereby practically do away with rough and foul riding. Commenting on the matter a letter from Saratoga to Daily, America of Monday says: "The determination of the stewards of the Saratoga meeting to immediately instituto a system of race supervision for the suppression of rough riding is generally applauded by turfmen and turf followers here. There has been more polo game work among our jockeys here than there was at any of the earlisr meetings. The chanoes of Acefull and Grantsdale in the United States Hotel Stakes and of Whiskey King in the Delaware Handicap on Saturday were ruined by the crowding and bumping they came in for. Poor little Arthur Redfern was so severely disabled by being carried into the fence on Whiskey King that he could not ride again during the afternoon. Col. James E. Peppor had to scratch his filly. Bounding Beauty, from the maiden race, which came last on the card. Redfern was in such pain he could not ride. Dublin, the horse Lucien Lyne rode in the Delaware, crowded Whiskey King into the fence at the turnout of the backstretch and Redfern's left foot was caugnt between the Kan-taka colt's side and the top rail. Several of his toes were bruisea. "Lyne acknowledged when called before the stewards that Dublin had been responsible for Red-fern's misfortune. The Atheling colt, he said, bore in on Whiskey King in spite of his (Lyno's) efforts to keep him straight. He, no doubt, spoke the truth, and the action of the stewards in suspending him for four days was not popular. It was felt that they had picked out one of the cleanest and most inoffensive riders here to make an example of, after overlooking the rough work of a lot of notoriously rough young scapegraces. "The patrol scheme the Hon. William Collins Whitney suggested last week will probably be put into affect. The other members of the governing board of the Saratoga Association agree with Mr. Whitney tLat the best way to punish the reckless jockeys is to station watchers at various places along the course and accept their reports without question. Mr. Whitney's system would have been put in operation earlier if men qualified to undertake the onerous job had been available. " No man is more put out than Mr. Whitney over the recklessness of the jockeys here, and his own prize broncho buster, Master Tommy Burns, will feel the weight of Mr. Whitney's authority unless he mends his ways. If this scheme of a general patrol proves effective at Saratoga, there is little doubt that it will be adopted at tho metropolitan tracks. Some of the big stables will lose the. serv. ices of riders .they pay big salaries to, at times when jockeys aro most needed, but everything will work out fairly in tho end. There will not be so much acrimonious talk after the running of big stakes, and public form will become more reliable. So far as public form goes, rough riders are as dangerous as jockeys who pull horses. A horse may a3 wall be pulled as carried out at a turn or cut off at the start, or jammed against the rail in a drive through the homestretch." Local Turf Gossip LOCAL TURF GOSSIP. J. C. Milam shipped to Kentucky yesterday the two-year-olds Dan McKenna and Jack JJrien, to be turned out on one of tho stock farms for the season. C. Cella and L. The new course of thn Buffalo Jockey Clnb at Kenmore is nearing completion and the management has not been sparing in expense. When the plans for the clubhouse were shown it was stated that the estimated cost would be $50,C00, and it has beon increased, until now it is stated that it will be greater than $80,000 and it will be the finest clubhouse in this country. Washington Park has long laid claim to the finest clubhouse on any track, and there is not the least doubt but that of the Kenmore course will be its equal. It has the benefit of all modern improvements and the style of architecture is much more artistic. Work on the clubhouse and track is being pushed along rapidly and all will be in readiness for the opening of the meeting. August 30. It is said that the official count devoloped that upward of 17,000 persons the biggest crowd of tho year saw the races at Saratoga last Saturday. Twelve thousand was the general estimate. The association is out of debt now. It owed only $25,000, counting all tho outstanding bills for improvements at the end of the first week of the ' meeting. With good weather this week and next the association will make between $80,000 and $100,000 clear, and have a surplus after paying a 5 or 6 per cent, dividend to stockholders with which to make further, improvements and to add to the attractiveness of the stake book for next season. A prominent New York politician is responsible for the statement that the question of racing at Saratoga will be one of the issues before the legislature next winter, and that there is a probability that the great game at the Spa will be killed by that body. It would be a shame to wreck such a plant as that at Saratoga, but it is quite well understood in the east that much of its future depends on the action of the Jockey Club with reference to dates for the new track at Jamaica.
