VITi NTO. 201. . CHICAGO, FRIDAY, AUGUST 22, 1902. PRICE 5 CENTS Philo's Midsummer Stakes PHILO' 3 MIDSUMMER STAKES. Philo, with her light impost of ninety-two pounds, won the Midsummer Stakes at Hawthorne yesterday in the somewhat soft and cuppy going that pre-Tailed. The event was a six furlong dash for two-year-olds with $1,000 added. Philo was given an excellent ride by midget Bobbins, who displayed the skill of a long experienced jockey in the saddle and used his whip with judgment in the closing strides. He was greeted with a round of applause when he brought his victorious mount back to the judges' stand. To a good start Bheta, closely pressed by Philo and Flocarline. showed the way for the first five furlongs where Flocarline began to tire. In the last sixteenth Philo moved up on even terms with Bheta, and in a stirring finish the former won under a hard drive by one length. Bheta beat Flocarline one and one-half lengths forsecond place. The latter was a sharp contender for five furlongs, but tired when the last sixteenth struggle came up. Bheta simply could not concede the weight to Philo, but ran an excellent race, all things being considered. Gold Bell ran a listless race and has certainly trained off. Poor Boy ran far below his best form and gradually fell away beaten after the first three furlongs had been run. Goodman was handicapped by an incompetent ride. The stake was worth $1,390 to the winner. The steeplechase was robbed of much of its interest by the falling of five of the jumpers at different parts of the race. Torreon, closely pressed by Captain Conover, showed the way until just before taking the last jump, where the latter easi y went to the front and won by six lengths. Wenlock finished an indifferent third. Captain Conover and Torreon fenced cleanly throughout. In taking the fourth jump Ada S. G. lurched forward, after landing, losing her jockey. Greek Dollar fell heavily over the sixth jump. Stamp got a bad fall over the ninth jump, and Iceni and Mazo went down over the last. The day's opener furnished a surprise in the victory of Montauic, which showed much of ti e form he possessed two years ago. Off well in his stride, he at once rushed to the front and, displaying a sharp turn of speed throughout, won in hollow fashion by two and a half lengths from Ailyar, -which beat Leviathan two for second place. Ailyar Tan far below expectations, but the track was probably too slow for him to show at his best. Wink-field saw he had no chance to beat the winner in the last eighth and therefore did not persevere any too vigorously with him. Leviathan showed in improved form and is worthy of consideration from now on. Ha j don's race was nowhere up to the form he displayed at his last outing. He can do much better. Galba, the even money favorite in the second race, a dash of five furlongs for two-year-olds, ran an unaccountably poor race, falling away badly beaten when turning for home when he was lying in a contending position with the leaders. Kite Star proved to be the best, but not until after a desperate finish with Blue Miracle, which he beat to the wiro by a short head. Judge Himes finished third a length back. Blue Miracle was a rank outsider in the betting. He finished resolutely and ran by far the best race of his career. Tancred appeared the winner when a furlong out, having a lead of two lengths over Kite Star, but faltered palpably when put to the test in the last sixteenth. Judge Himes made a favorable impression in his maiden effort. Harry Now, long overdue, finally won a good race under elbvor pilotage by Buchanan. It was in the fifth, u free handicap purse of $600 for three-year-olds and upward, one and one-eighth miles. The light-weighted Hargisled for almost a mile, where there Was a general closing up, but in the last sixteenth Harry New gradually crept to the front, and won easily by a length, with the same i distance separating Artena and Hargis for second place. Artena was taken wide at the head of the stretch and finished toward the outside rail. Pied-erich saved ground by cutting close to the inside rail when turning for home, but faded away when the pinch came in the last eighth. Lucien Appleby took the last race of the day easily by a head from Nitrate, which beat Flying Torpedo ten lengths for second place. Buchanan purposely drew a fine finish on Lucien Appleby, having Nitrate beate'n all through the last sixteenth. The usual large crowd was present and the betting was somewhat heavy. The track was drying out fast and with no rain today should be in pretty fair condition. Worth Entries WORTH ENTRIES. Fountain, the California horseman, was here today and purchased a couple of horses. He bought Filibuster from R F. Meyers and Dumont from J. H. Baker. The purse won by the jumper, Terry Banger, was ordered returned. An investigation brought out the fact that the horse was trained by jockey J. Gormley, the ruled off steeplechase rider. The purse has been awarded to Arius, which finished second, and Terry Banger stands suspended until it is returned. Mars Cassidy will do the starting the first four days next week at Kinloch Park. Gossip of the Turf GOSSIP OF THE TURF. Canajoharie, the fleetest two-yoar-old in the big stable of Stephen Sanford and his son John, has been retired for the season. Canajoharie bucked in work last week and Mr. Sanford sent him to Hurri-cana Farm, in the Mohawk Valley. The colt is so big and gawky Mr. Sanford feared that a rough course of training on bad legs might put him permanently out of business. Canajoharie will remain at Hurricana all next winter and spring, and run his CONTINUED ON SECOND PAGE. fc GOSSIP OF THE TURF. (Continued from First Page). first race here next summer. The colt is a chestnut, by Potomac Caledonia, and a full brother to The Scotchman, a Hurricana bred horse Richard Crokor raced in England two years ago. Mr. San-ford says he is the beBt looking and fastest horse Potomac ever got, and would have held his own in the best company if it had been possible to get him to the races. J. R. Keene's crack running horse, Disguise n., arrived from England Monday on board the Minne-tonka. There were 122 other horses on the boat. Mr. Keene himself left Liverpool on board the Lucania last Saturday. Disguise II. is a five-year-old colt, by Domino Bonnie Girl. He was taken aDroad by Mr. Keene when a year old, and as a three-year-old. on September 27, 1900, won the Jockey Club Stakes at Newmarket, one of the classic events. King Edward's, then the Prince of Wales, Diamond Jubilee was the popular favorite, but Disguise II. beat him easily, winning by two lengths. Disguise II. went wrong after the race, which was worth $50,000, and it has been Mr. Keene's intention for a long time to bring him to this country and place him in his stud. There is no finer breeding than that displayed by this colt. Disguise II., in the Jockey Club Stakes, was in the betting at 100 to 40. and was ridden by Mornington Cannon. Cannon laid back, holding his mount under a carefnl pull until turning into the straight when he came on and won easily. The colt will be taken to Mr. Keene's farm and probably never will be raced again. Domino, his sire, called "The Black Wonder," was one of the best colts on the American turf. He won many races, and a handsome shaft stands over his grave on Mr. Keene's Kentucky stock farm. Local Turf Gossip LOCAL TUKF GOSSIP. The following notice was handed down by the officials of Hawthorne yesterday: "On and after Monday, August 25, all flat races held uusUib auspices of the Chicago Jockey Club will bjjjB) i with the 'no-recall' system, the rise of the barrier being the signal for the start." The no-recall system avoids delays, and it is noted that there are few horses left at the post on the eastern tracks, where the no-recall system is in vogue. Another advantage of the no-recall system is that it saves horses while at the post and keeps them longer in racing condition than when they are sujected to a lot of wear and. tear by long delays at the post. The no-recall system of starting is by no means a new innovation to race-goers at Hawthorne for the same method of starting was in vogue when William Bruen handled the flag for the Chicago Jockey Club during the summer of 1898. The majority of the owners now racing on the local tracks are in favor of having their horses started without tbe recall flag and will petition the Western Jockey Club to make this system of starting obligatory on all tracks. Old Fox, one of the starters in the steeplechase yesterdaj, will hereafter be barred from starting until the judges deem him in a fit condition to run through the field. The horse, from all accounts, met with some kind of an injury in his last start, hence the ruling-yesterday; Thirty-five bookmakers had their slates up in the ring yesterday. The judges at Hawthorne are satisfied that jockey Downs, who was suspended for Helen Pax-ton's bad showing Monday, is blameless of any wrong doing in connection with the running of the mare, and they have lifted the ban and he will be permitted to ride in the future. The suspension of E. B. Bodgers and J. H. Young, the owners, is continued for an indefinite period. Jockey Bartley, who had the mount on Stamp in the steeplechase, had his collar bone broken when the horse fell. Jockey G. Wilson was badly cut about the head by his fall on Ada S. G. The riders on Iceni, Mazo and Greek Dollar, which also fell in the race, escaped unhurt. Jockey Coburn was taken suddenly sick with cramps before race time and refrained from riding during the afternoon. Jockey T. Knight, the clever rider in the employ of J. B. Bespess, did not accompany the latter to Buffalo yesterday, having secured permission to remain here and ride Argregor in the Northern Handicap, which is to be run at Hawthorne next Saturday. Jockey J. Woods was fined $100 by the starter yesterday for breaking through the barrier on Gold Bell in the stake race. And Jockey Prior was suspended for four days by the starter for disobedience at the post in the first race. Saratoga Turf Gossip SARATOGA TURF GOSSIP. Saratoga, N. Y.,Augast 21. Alfred Featherstone has no intention whatever of quitting the turf. He has recently nominated some twenty high priced yearlings in stakes to be run in 1903 and 1904. P. Byan will sell his horses in training, Nones, Boxane and others, at Shoepshead Bay the first week in September. Wilson's career on the turf was indefinitely cut short today by the stewards after his bad ride on J. A. Drake's Charlie Grainger in the second race. J. E. Madden has sold a half interest in his recently acquired colt, Acefull, to Messrs. Whitney & Duryea and he will be their second string in the Futurity. Their main reliance, Irish Lad, is weighted at 130 pounds. "Butch" Thompson's will has been opened and the estate found to be worth $300,000. Eighty per cent was left to his wife and near relatives and the remainder to secure annuities to his old employees. Leo Swatts, "Kentuck" Kennedy, Ollie Burns, D. W. Martin and Al Smith. John A. Mackey, manager of Haggin's Bancho Del PaBO, the most extensive breeding farm in the world, is here and states that, although he has contributed no less than 2,000 nominations to the Futurity, he has yet to witness the running of that event and that he means to be there this year. There was a report in circulation at the track that L. V. Bell meditated buying "Churchill Downs," but there was no truth in it whatever. Alex. Shields, who formerly owned Handicapper, bid on him after his victory in the last race today and got him back from "Bill" Daly, who had secured him in the same manner last fall at Morris Park. Wild Pirate was claimed for $1,600 by W. T. Mc-Grath out of the fifth race today. The majority of the big layers in the ring had clean sheets over his defeat. Jockey Willie Ersbmehl, recently injured through a fall when riding Dr. Hughes, died at 2:15 p. m. today. A. J. Joyner, of late years public trainer, but closely identified with the racing interests in this country of the late Pierre Lorillard and known as handler of Perry Belmont's Ethelbert, has been en-gaged by Sidney Paget at a salary of $20,000 per year to handle his recently acquired string of yearlings and two-year-olds, whose value is several hundred thousand dollars. This is probably the largest fee ever paid to any trainer in this country. L. Jackson has at last been set down for incompetency by his employer, Green B. Morris. The latter"s superb colt, Sombrero, was ridden to victory today by T. Burns. Octoroon, A, Belmont's three-year-old filly, after many ossays, has at last emerged from the maiden ranks and will be retired forthwith to the stud. LUCIEN APPLEBY, 7 TO 10, WON, Stand a tap on Montanic. He worked fast enough to beat any sprinter at the local tracks by a block. Don't be afraid of tbe public choice, Ailyar; this one is of no present account. Judge Himes is a good colt but is not thoroughly broke to the barrier; play him to win and show. Lucien Appleby is much the best. The above is what we said of this trio of good things. Yesterday we also gave for a place play PHILO, 3 to I; KITE STAR, 3 to I; HARRY NEW, 3 to I. Not a tipster in Chicago picked Montanic to win or gave the good colt Judge Himes a chance. The latter ran green; he hardly knew what was expected of him. Next out he will beat this same bunch easily. Today we have two more royal good things; odds from 4 to 10 to I. SATURDAY one of the Montanic order goes. The odds will be at least 20 to 1 and oar track expert informs ns that this individual can make McChesney look like a selling plater Give us a trial and be convinced that we are the most consistent tipsters in the business. Captain Conover, 7-1; Lucien Appleby, 7-10; were the good things our clients received Thursday. Friday we Have Three Good Things at Hawthorne On one of these good things we expect to get from 12 to 30 to 1. On the other two we expect to get 3, 4 or F to 1. That we will win these three we are fully convinced, as this inside information comes from sources that seldom, if ever, fail. Saturday at Hawthorne we have a 15 to 1 Shot on Tap. This is a sure winner on any kind of a track. On past races it don't look to have a 100 to 1 chance. We have inside information that this good thing has improvnd twenty pounds since its last start; then it ran like a common selling plater. We mean to continue to deserve public confidence. Every facility which brains and unlimited capital can employ to corral winning information is being employed by us to supply winners, for our clients. The fruits of these labors have been ample since the opening of the season, but are nothing compared to what we expect to do during the next five or six weeks of racing. Try us a day or a week and get our winners you will never regret it.
