CHICAGO, WEDNESDAY, AUGUST 37 1902. PRICE 5 CENTS No Recall Works Well NO RECAMj WORKS AVECI.. The no recall flag system of starting worked considerably smoother at Hawthorne yesterday and with but few exceptions the starts were fairly good. As on Monday, what horses did not get away with the field was due to their jockey's lack of alertness when the barrier went up and not to any fault of the starter. With a little more schooling and the barring of refractory horses from starting, the new system issure to meet with unqualified success. The day was almost ideal for racing purposes and an unusually large crowd was present. The track was in excellent condition, Joe Frey running off a mile in 1 :39l, which is the fastest once around the circle that has been made here this year. It was in the fourth race, a free handicap for three-year-olds and upward at one mile. Joe Frey opened favorite, but the heavy backing of Jiminez, which was backed from 5 to 3 to 1, caused his price to recede to 3 to 1 at post time. To a good start for all but Artena, on which Birkenruth was caught napping when the barrier wont up, Jane Holly, closely attended by Lake View Belle and Jiminez, showed the way for the first sir furlongs, but along about thoilrst half-mile post Jxe. Frey displaced Lake "View Belle and turned into the stretch in third position. When well straightened for home Jane Holly and Jiminez showed signs of distress and began to tire, Joe Frey assuming command. The last named stood off Brulare's determined bid in the last eighth with ease and then came away, winning by one and a half lengths from Harry New, which beat Brulare three for second place. Harry New came with a great rush at the end and was much the best of the others. Brulare ran consistently and her race was good when the weight she carried is taken into consideration. She is probably the truest running horse that has raced here this year. Artena had no chance from where she got off.gjJiminez is nowhere near the good horse.he was last year. Had Coburn shown alacrity to get off in the first race, a dash of; five furlongs forltwo-vear-olds, Hindi, on which he had the mount, might have beaten Dodona. Buchanan, lon the latter, got a start of two lengths on thej field and. takine Jvigor-ous advantage of it, kept his mount in front all the way, winningga head on the post after la stirring last sixteenth drive. Coburn was slow in getting in action on Hindi, but after the first quarter had been run the filly moved up fast. In the last sixteenth he got on almost even turns with Dodona, but try as he would he could not get her head in front at the wire. He allowed Hindi to swerve against the winner in the last sixteenth, but the interference was hardly enough to change the re-sult.fSidney C. Love finished third two and a half lengths back. He was cut off at the laiat eighth when next to the inside rail, but would undoubtedly have been beaten by the first two Jwith clear sailing. Joe Buckley showed but scant speed and ran a dull race. He can do much better. Mary Glenn showed much early speed and is deserving of attention the next time she starts. The second race, a six furlongs dashin which a number of good sprinters started, went to Elsie L., well ridden by J. Ranch. He lay along with her in fourth position until just before entering the last quarter, where she moved up fast and easily wore down Evening Star in the last sixteenth, winning by two and a half lengths. Evening Star finished a half in front of Huachuca, on which Nellie Wad-dell was lapped. Evening Star displayod a keen turn of speed and probably ran the best race of her life. Huachuca came with a rush at the end, getting up in time to nip Nellie Waddell on the post for third place. The latter, off none too well, made up ground fasten the first half and appeared to have a winning chance when turning for home, but tired rapidly under a weak ride when the pinch came. Federal showed scant speed and was never a serious contender. Ho failod to show that final rush that has characterized many of his efforts here this year. L'Etrenne was always outrun, but was much hampered. John A. Clarke had to be much the best in the third race, a dash of one mile, to win. He was pinched out of position when the barrier arose and appeared to have little chance, but while going down the backstretch he made up ground rapidly and in the final eighth wore down Freetorius and Matin Bell, winning easily by one length going away. Preetoriu3 outstayed Matin Bell in the closing strides, getting second place by a short head. Matin Bell faltered when a furlong out and then rallied, finishing strongly. Marcos appeared anchored with the weight and altogether ran a listless race. Best Man, well backed by a few sharpshooters, never gave his backers the least hope for success. Somersault ran well for six furlongs. Rolling Boer was made a 4 to 5 favorite over the field that faced the barrier in the fifth race, a dash of seven furlongs. Buchanan laid along in fifth position with him until just after entering the run for the wire, where he called upon him and under a vigorous ride easily wore down those id front of him, winning by one length from Geyser, which b3c. Major Dixou three-quartets of -a lecgthrfor-second place. Geyser showed much improvement over his last race, finishing stoutly and- showing gameneBS under punishment. Major Dixon began slowly, but moved up fast in the final quarter and finished strongly. Harney displayed much speed and bears watching in cheaper company. Galathee was right there for six furlongs. George Arab showed a flash of early speed. The last race of the day, a dash of one and one-quarter miles, went to Ravensbary, chiefly through Buchanan's excellent judgment and strong finish. He did not call on Ravensbury until in the final eighth, where the colt moved up fast and gradually wore down Edith Q. and Caliban. He won by a half length under a vigorous drive, Edith Q. finishing a head before Caliban for second place. Edith Q. showed to good advantage, but the winner was just a shade too good for her. Caliban was undoubtedly the best but was handicapped by a weak ride. Adelante tired faBt after showing well for one and one-eighth miles. Lizella was never a serious contender and appears to be of no present account. The track was in excellent condition and fast time was made in the various races. In case of no rain it will be at its best today. Saratoga Gossip SARATOGA GOSSIP. Sakatoga, N. Y., August 26. A perfect day and track and a particularly attractive card served to draw out a large and enthusiastic throng today that filled the grand stand. The lawns and paddock presented the appearance of a fashionable garden party. It is not given to many to be present on an occasion rendered memorable by the victories of two such superlatively great race horses as Chnctanunda and Advance Guard. But few realized that their performances of today had shed additional luster on the American turf and were destined to be recalled with pride in after years by those fortunate enough to have witnessed them. It is a matter of regret to have to report the breakdown, through bowing a tendon this morning in work, of E. J. Baldwin's crack three-year-old Crnzados, by Emperor or Norfolk Atalanta II. The "Big Store," Ullman & Weller, laid many individual wagers, their shoots being (jovered with figures, againBt every starter but one in the fourth race today, that one exception being the winner, Red Knight. His name was written at the bottom corner out of the way, and but two bets were recorded against him, but they were fairly good ones $15,000 to $1,IC0 straight, $4,000 to $1,000 place and $2,000 to $1,000 third, made by "Pittsburg Phil," and the other bet by A. Alberts called for $10,000 to CONTINUED ON SECOND PAGE. SABATOGA GOSSIP. (Continued from First Page.) $1,000 to win, $4,000 to $1,000 place and $2,000 to $1,000 to show. W. C. Whitney's large batch of yearlings recently .shipped from Kentucky has arrived here in good aondition. T. Monaaan, owner of BroadBtreet, was fined $100 by the stewards for being late in providing a jockey to ride the horse in the fifth race. He was scratched at the last moment. Early in the betting John A. Drake placed the modest wager of $3,000 at evens on Chuctanunda, when it was suggested that he had often riiked much larger sums on cheap selling platers and that here was the champion of the year in his class, piloted by a crack jockey, a small field and at his distance, that it was Jup to him to touch up the layers for an amountlworthyf of ;the occasion, he smilingly acquiesced and he not only acted promptly and industriously on the suggestion, but applied it with redoubled vigor in the next race, where Advance Guard particularly fulfilled all these conditions. The superbly bred two-year-old colt Meltonian by-Melton Argenta, fran a brilliant). and high-class race today, beaten a short head by C. B. Ellison's crack colt Skilful, and bids fair to improve into one of the colts of the year. His recent trial of six furlongs in 1:13 flat was pronounced by experts as particularly taking. Parisina, by The Pepper, a three-year-old filly, which is still a maiden, worked six furlongs last Saturday in 1 :13. At the banquet given Monday night to the directors t of the Saratoga Bacing Association by the President, Mr. W. C. Whitney, the financial success of the current year was informally referred to. It is calculated that this year's profits will exceed $130,000, as against $78,000 last year. The same divi dend declared last season will be paid to the stockholders and the surplus will be devoted to improvements projected in the immediate future.'! The membership seats in the Metropolitan Turf Association of F. Reardon, who welched and was expelled last summer, and of the late Butch Thompson and Ed Marks will be sold at auction at the regular meeting of the association next Friday evening. Rough Rider got away running, led throughout and ran a surprisingly good race. Satire, lucky and well handled, made good unexpectedly well and finished strongly. Brunswick is racing into condition and outclasses this field when entirely fit. He was a good horse, but had a poor chance with his bad rider. Mary Worth, nearly left, worked a rough journey and closed a tremendous gap in the first seven furlongs. She was a good filly today and should win soon. Futurity Anticipations FUTURITY ANTICIPATIONS. "The $60,000 Futurity will be run at Sheepshead Bay next Saturday afternoon, the event being the feature of tho opening day of the Coney Island Jockey Club's fall meeting. Turfmen are unanimous in the opinion that it will be the most interesting Futurity ever run, in view of the great number of high-class eligibles and the inability of any one to narrow the race down to one or two con. tenders. It was announced on Saturday that J. R. & F. P. Keene would probably send as many as five two-year-olds to the post, and that they would be ridden by Spencer, Shaw, Rice, Shea and Brennan. The Koene horses arrived at Sheepshead Bay late on Saturday night, and yesterday trainer James Rowo was making preparations to put the string of youngsters through their last paces. From present indications Rowe will send these two-year-olds to the post next Saturday : The chestnut filly, Dazzling, by St. Leonards Splendour ; the bay colt Flying Prince, by Ben Brush Fairy Slipper; the chestnut colt Hurst Park, by Kingston Editha ; the chestnut colt Whitechapel,by Chorister White Rose, and the bay colt Dalesman, by Ben Brush Innerdale. In addition to these cracks the Keenes have Tam o' Shanter, Prediction, Palmist, Duster, Injunction, Sir Launcelot, Toboggan, Clarion, Sur-bition, Gimcrack, Rigodon, Futurita and Biturica, who are also eligible. In a word, the Keenes have such a powerful string to select from that it will not be at all surprising if their representatives are favorites in the betting," says the New York Sun of Monday. "But when it comes to actual merit there is no two-year-old in the Keene lot which may be regarded as a sure winner of the Futurity. Daziling ran second to Irish Lad in the Saratoga Special and displayed such high class qualities that she has been selected by many as an excellent betting proposition next Saturday. It was a matter of common gossip that if Dazzling had not been interfered with in the special she would have beaten Irish Lad. While the Keenes have the largest number o probable starters in the big race, it must not be forgotten that John E. Madden, both directly and indirectly, will have a big representation at the post. In the first place . he intends to start his crack filly, Merry Reel, by Mirthful Amanda V., which has shown fast time in her work, and his recently acquired colt, River Pirate, by Pirate of Penzance Harebell. These two are sure to carry Madden's colors. In addition, Madden will have contingent interests in the running qualities of Whitney & Duryea's Irish Lad and Acefull,.R. T. Wilson, Jr. 's Mexican and C. R. Ellison's Skilful. He is training Irish Lad and Acefull. When he sold Irish Lad to Whitney & Duryea it was with the understanding that in the event of winning the Futurity, he should receive a certain percentage of the stake. The same stipulation was made by Madden when he Bold Mexican, Skilful and Acefull to C. H. Mackay. He only sold a half interest in Acefull. "Irish Lad will carry 130 pounds, a big impost for the race. He is by Candlemas Arrowgrass and has beon a consistently successful colt ever since Whitney & Duryea bought him. His latest triumph was in the rich Saratoga Special, a feat that will be remembered when the betting begins. Several layers said yesterday that Irish Lad would not open favorite on the slates, because of his weight, but that his price would be held down tight. Mexican, if ho does not show any signs of lameness between now and post time, is bound to be another public choice. He is a fine colt, by Mirthful Llandrinio, his last achivement being a superb victory in the $15,000 Produce Stakes at Brighton Beach. Skilful, by Mirthful Skadi, and Acefull, by Mirthful Myrtle Harkness, have both won at tho Spa in a way to warrant support for them in the blue ribbon event of tho year. "On actual work turfmen are at present very yweet on the chances of J. P. Kraner's speedy colt Golden Maxim, by Golden Garter Miss Maxim. At Sheopshead Bay on Friday, with 125 pounds on his back, this colt covered the Futurity distance in 1 :12. The time was taken by half a dozen reliable 'clockors,' who' say that the colt went on and finished the mile, eased np, in 1 : 14. On the strength of these figures there is no doubt that Golden Maxim will be backed at a price pretty close to the lowest quotation in tho ring. W. C. Whitney's colt Payne, by Meddler Mountain Range, the first of the racers bred at Mr. Whitnoy's establishment to win, is considered another factor. Payne ran a good race tho other day at the Spa and showed all the qualities of a high-class thoroughbred. "August Belmont will be represented by Mizzen, by Hn-tings Donna Mia; Fire Eater, by Hastings Fides and possibly Lord of the Yale, by Hastings Lady Violet. Mizzm,-early in the year, was considered a world beater, but he soon showed signs of staleness and hs been handled gingerly ever since. Deimel & Dwyer's Africander, by Star Ruby Afric Queen, is a sure starter and a good colt, too. Julius Fleischmann has a rattling performer in Hurst-bourne, by Indio Flora Hurst, and John A. Drake still believes that his eolt, Savable, by Salrator Strathflower, h s a . royal chance. A. Feather-stone's Mary Street may go, together with Miles Finlen's Hamburg filly, Mamari. "David Gideon believes he has the winner in Sovereign, a powerful son of His Highness Nettie, while the Goughacres Stable's Athel, by Atheling Retribution, is a whirlwind as far as work is concerned. J. B. Haggin is reported to havo a 'dark one' in Teddy Mack, a brown colt, by Candlemas Tongese, which has been showing marvellous time down in Kentucky. He will also start Sir Voohies, which ran third in the Adirondack Handicap on Saturday. Other probable starters are G. B. Morris' Artvis, by Golden Garter Memento; T. C. Mc- Dowell's Woodlake, by Candlemas Bracegirdle ; John W. Schorr's Onatas, by Top Gallant Sister Molly and L. V. Ball's Lady Albercraft. " Capt. S. S. Brown has a colt in his barn that will be worth remembering. It is Blue Ribbon, by Sir Dixon Bonnie Blue II., a full brother to Blue Girl and Bines, which has been improving every race and is now at his best. Mrs. L. Curtis' swift-footed filly, Eugenia Burch, by Ben Strome The Humber, which won the second half of the $15,000 Produce Stakes at Brighton, is another supposed factor being considered by many turfmon to be the best filly of the year. Tho Pepper Stable's Love Note, T. P. Hayes' Orlando and Jacob Worth's Mamie Worth are also possible contestants. Altogether it can be put down as certain that one of the biggest fields on record, possibly twonty-five horses, will go to the post. Horsemen hope that C. J. Fitzgerald will be able to resume his duties with the barrier on this important occasion, as starter Pet-tingill appears to have lost his grip with the jockeys at Saratoga, judging from the comment yesterday."
