Inspector Stevens, incapably handled, lost considerable ground at intervals of bad jumping and went very wide on the last turn and was probably best. Judge Phillips ran a remarkably good race and forcing the pace throughout held on gamely. Sallust was a good horse poorly handled and is steadily improving. Alsono, from a lucky start, drew to the front early and was well in hand from start to finish and much the best at the weights. Unmasked moved up fast on the stretch turn, put up a game race and is evidently in his best form. Clorita, in spite of a hard, early effort to beat the winner, held on well at the end. Ben Battle finished strongly and is more than useful. Extinguisher closed up ground from the half. Do Reszke broke slowly and made up ground. Gunfire received a lucky start, was carefully saved next to the rail in behind the pacemakers and made good with a. brilliant stretch run. Blues, also away running and luckily placed throughout, delayed his run, allowing the winner to steal a long lead, and came with a belated rush right at the end. Hyphen, away badly, was best, worked a rough journey in the first half to a prominent position and moved up too early on the far turn, but stood a long, hard drive with remarkable gameness. Whiskey King beat the gate and made thn most of his advantage. He goes farther with each race and should win soon. His Eminence also suffered at the start and put up a high class race. Advance Guard, nearly loft, closed a big gap. Francesco got away badly and failed to stay. Herbert's chances were destroyed on the first turn. Baron Pepper was poorly handled. A crowd numbering close to 17,000 persons filled every available space in the grandstand, betting ring and esplanade, and between the races the spectators were allowed to go into the infield. The card was one of the best offered here this year and resulted in a splendid exhibition of the thoroughbred at his best. No track in America was ever faster than the Harlem track yesterday and several records one of them an American record were broken. The drawing attraction of the card was the Twentieth Century Stakes, a handicap for three-year-olds and upward, at one and three-sixteenths miles with $3,000 added. Of the thirteen scheduled to start, five were absentees, but the adding of Jim-inez with 106 pounds up brought a fiold of nine to the post. The Hildreth entry, consisting of Mc-Chesney and Searcher, was made a prime favorite at even money. Neither was ever a serious contender in the race, the winner'turning up in Scin-tillant II. against whose chances as good as 15 to 1 could be had. fThe distance was accomplished in 1 :57t6, which was 1 seconds faster than the previous track mark and 17-20 of a second faster than the American mark of l:58i made by Boanerges at Washington Park in 1898. After a delay of twelve minutes at the postDwyer got the field off to a good start, with Jiminez in front, closely pressed by Scarlet Lily and Pink Coat. Passing the stand for the first time Jiminez led by a neck from Scarlet Lily, which was two and one-half lengths before Pink Coat, on which Joe Frey and McChesney were lapped, with the rest of the field bunched and close up. Going down the backstretch Jiminez increased his lead to two and one-half lengths, with little change in the position of the others, except that Nitrate had displaced Pink Coat in third position. Turning for home Jiminez still maintained an advantage of a length over Scarlet Lily, with Pink Coat third, but Nitrate fell away beaten and Scin. tillant II. moved up in fourth place. When well straightened for home Pink Coat moved up fast on even terms with Jiminez. and for a moment the race appeared to be between the two. but about the last eighth Winkfield called on Scintillant II., which responded with a rush, and quicker than it can be told the horse passed Pink Coat and Jiminez with consummate ease, winning in a big romp by four lengths from Jiminez, which beat Scarlet Lily one and a half for second place. Jiminez ran an excellent raco and carried his marvelous speed much farther than usual. He also stood the keen pressure of the last sixteenth struggle with gameness. Scarlet Lily ran to her best form and tired only in the last eighth. Pink Coat tired rapidly whon the pinch came and was undoubtedly a shade short. McChesney ran a listless race and was nover a serious contender. Nitrate was a keen contender for seven furlongs. Joe Frey ceased to be a serious contender after seven and a half furlongs had been run. Rose Tree took the fifth race, a dash of one mile, in a fierc drive by a nose from Toah. which boat Alard five lengths for second place. T. Walsh put up a careless ride on Toah, which should have won. Bose Tree turned the mile in 1 38;, which is sevon-fiftoenths or a second faster than the mark set by Libertine at the same track some years ago. The day's opener proved an easy thing for St. Cuthbert, which ran to his best form, Ho boat L'Etrenno by one lsngth, the latter finishing a head before Zyra for second place. Gypzone took the second race by a neck from Watoma, which beat Blue Miracle one for second place. Dagmar was much the best in the steeplechase, winning in a big romp by four and a half lengths from Old Fox, which finished twenty before Mystic Shriner for place. Meddler fell about thirty feet from the wire when ho had third place assured. Burnie Bnnton easily took the sixth race from Federal by two lengths, with Brnlare third, and the seventh went to Frank M by a head from Scotch Plaid, with Lady Chorister third. Jockeys Helgesen, Winslett and Donnelly were fined $50 each for cutting across and interfering with Toah on the far turn in the fifth race. Secretary Nathanson-has announced a cup race over the usual distance of two and a quarter miles, $20 each, with $1,000 added, entries to close September 9, and the race to be run September 10. John Bright pulled np" lame in his work, causing his owners to scratch him in the Twentieth Century Handicap. McChesnoy was purchased by Durnell & Horn yesterday for the reported price of $17,000. The sale was consummated before the Twentieth Century Stakes, in which he started, was run, but the new owners were to take possession of him afterward. A dispatch from New York to the Cincinnati Commercial Tribune of Sunday says: "The deal for the control of the Louisville race track, which has been hanging fire ever since the opening of the Saratoga meeting, was completed a few days ago, and the control of the track passes into the hands of a syndicate headed by Mayor Grainger, of Louisville. "As soon as all details of the deal are complete, Mr. Grainger will be chosen president, to succeed W. F. Schulte. Mat Winn will be vice-president and Charles F. Price secretary and general manager. "The new officials are all men of great popularity and of good standing. It is expected that racing at Churchill Downs will again be as popular as it was in days of yore. The purses and stakes will be increased and every effort will be made to get the best class of horses and owners. "The entire plant will be thoroughly overhauled and a new betting shed will be erected, with seats on the roof. The grounds will be beautified and a great deal of attention will be paid to the neglected infield. "It is the purpose of the now owners to use the grounds in the summer time for a pleasure park. Sousa's and all the leading orchestras in the country will be secured and other attractions that are found where out-of-door performances are given. " Tho change of control will mark a new era for the historic race course. Mayor Grainger and Charles F. Price are names to conjure with. The first named has made a great record for himself as the boss of the town, and surely no one is more respected by the horsemen and the race-going public that Charles F. Price." W. C. Whitney at the dinner he gave to his associates at Saratoga the other evening, made several novel suggestions as to the future conducting of racing, among which was the plan to provide spectators with field glasses so that all might see a race like the Futurity run down a straightaway course. Mr. Whitney, it is said, explained that under present circumstances it is impossible to see the early part of such a race, the struggle in the last quarter of a mile being the only part discerniblo to the naked eye. In order to facilitate matters, therefore, Mr. Whitney suggested that a powerful pair of field glasses'might be attached, to each reserved seat in the grandstand, after the style of opera glasses in a theater. It is said that next year the plan will be tried at both Sheepshead Bay and Saratoga. Racing Dates of 1902 RACING DATES OF 1002. Windsor, Out., August 25 September 2 Sheepshead Bay, N.
