KO. 215, CHICAGO, SUNDAY, SEPTEMBER 7, 1902. PSlCE5CEyTS M'chesney's Great Race M'CHESNET'S GREAT RACE. ' The splendid racing at Harlem yesterday was witnessed by one of the largest gatherings at this track this year, and a better day's sport could not be given anywhere. McChesney's grand race was received with rounds of applause, and the Darnell & Heiz colt was voted the best three-year-old in , America. Carrying 122 pounds and conceding much j weight to every horse in the race, he won the Oak Park Handicap in impressive fashion, negotiating ( the mile and an eighth in 1 which was four- fifths of a second faster than the previous track , mark and close to tho American record. The slake was a dash of one and one-eighth ( miles, for three-year-olds with $1,500 added. Of the , nine scheduled to start three dodged the issue, but , the adding of Little Scout at the last moment sent , a field of seven to tho post. It was generally thought that McChesney conld not concede the weight he was asked to give the others and therefore as good as 6 to 1 could he had against his chances, To a good start Hon Wot, closely pressed by Miracle II., showed the way for the first six furlongs, but just before turning for home the latter fell away beaten and McChesDey moved up into se.cpnd place. When well, straightened for home McChesney closoa up" fast on Boir ! Mot'andT grfiti 5 ually wore him down winning hand ridden by three-quarters of a length. Corrigan finished third seven lengths back. Bon Mot ran to his best form, but the winner was too much for him when the last sixteenth struggle cams up. Corrigan outstayed Miracle II. in the drive down the final furlong. Harry New ran well for a mile. Little Scout showed only a flash of early speed. The fourth race was productive of another sur" prise, Jiminez running one and a quarter miles in 2:04 flat, which is the fastest time for the distance ever made on any western track and clipped off two and two-fifths seconds from the track mark. Jiminez was at his best and held a commanding lead throughout, winning in a canter by two and a half lengths from Pink Coat, which beat Hermencia a neck for second place. Pink Coat responded gamely when called on in the last eighth, but gave up the struggle to cut down the winner's lead long before the wire had been reached. Hormencia was under keen pressure all through the last quarter and finished with gameness. Dr. Stephens ran well for over a mile, but tired fast in the last furlong. John McQurk was never a serious factor in the race. The fifth race, a daeh of six furlongs, was productive of another fast effort, St. Minor winning in l:2r. Nellie Waddell assumed command at the barrier's rise and led by a good margin up to the last furlong, where St. Minor, which had always laid second, gradually closed up on her, and, after a sharp struggle through the laBt sixteenth, beat her to the wire by a half length. Headwater finished third, five lengths back of Nellie Waddell'. It was strictly a three horse race throughout. The day's opener, a daBh of six furlongs, proved an easy thing for Carl Kahler, held at 4i to 1 in the betting. Little Robbins rode him with skill, taking him to the front after tho first quarter had been run and remaining there to the end. He won in a canter by four lengths from Emma R which boat Lass of Langden three for second place. Emma R. ran to her best form and has shown consistency in her last few starts. Lass of Langden ran at about an even clip throughout. Qeorgie showed a flash of early speed. The talent fell heavily to Bad News in the second race, a dash of five furlong3 for two-year-olds. He was held at 9 to 10 in the betting, but was easily beaten by the second choice. Au Revoir. The latter got off with a flying start and the result was never afterward in doubt, he winning by one and one-half lengths in a canter from Bad News, which beat King Dodo four for second place. It was strictly a three horse race throughout. ' The last race of the day, a dash of one and thiee-sixteenths miles, went to Ravensbury. which won easily by a neck from Lady Chorister, on which Edith Q, was lapped for third place. Rowdy, hard ridden all the way, trailed the pacemakers, which raced from the start at top speed, benefited at their expense and cauxht them tiring at the end, winning a lucky raco right on the pot. Judge Phillips is one of the best steeplechasers seen in recent years, displayed brilliant and enduring speed throughout and but for a costly error at the last obstacle, where he also seriously interfered with Fulminate, would have won easily. The latter forced th pace throughout, and but for interference over the last jump would have been an easy second. He is in rare form, but was unable to concede the weight. Galahad finished strong and ran in much improved form. Semper Ira was a secure fourth throughout, and when close up dangerously fell at the last jump, but ran a cracking good race. Sadducee also received a lucky start and being skillfully handled saved second place from the fast coming Smart Set. The latter broke fiatfooted, worked a rough passage in and out of pockets, finished like a flash and was probably best. St. Finnan had no mishaps and failed to stick at the end after being prominent to the stretch. Potente went well and was a contender for second place a furlong out. Changes at Louisville CHAN GES AT IjOUISVlLXE. Concerning the movement to bring about a change in the management of the New Louisville Jockey Club a dispatch from them to the Enquirer of yesterday says: "As the result of a conference held with the owners of the Louisville Jockey Club this afternoon it was practically decided by. Mayor C. F. Grainger to accept the presidency of the club next year. " 'I did not give a positive answer,' said the mayor, 'but I agreed to accept upon conditions, which I believe will be met in a day or so. Not having definitely accepted I do not wish to discuss my plans. If, however, I am at the head of the Loisville Jockey Club next year, I shall do all in my power to keep the race meetings at Churchill Downs up to the high standard sot by M. Lewis Clark and continued since his death.' " It is reported on reliable authority that one of the conditions imposed by Mayor Grainger is the hanging up of even lsrger purses. Louisville is one of the greatest training grounds in the country, and if more and better stakes are offered horses which are trained will remain for the spring meeting instead of hastening to the east, as has been the caae for several years. "With the acceptance of the Presidency by Mayor Grainger the return of Charles F. Price to the local track is also assured. Mr. Grainger has, it is understood, been offered $6,000 a year, while Mr. Price is to be offered $5,0CO to be secretary and genral manager." Notes of the Turf NOTES OF THE TURF. L. F., Chicago.
