He was badly messed about and shut off and interfered with a half dozen times and hopelessly pocketed, but found clear sailing.whon a furlong out . ' and finished like a flash. Maltster, suddenly improved and best always on this track, sustained his speed unexpectedly well. Kingraine received an over anxious ride, moved up too soon and tired right at the end, after appearing a sure winner in the stretch and should improve. Molly Brant was always prominent, displayed high class speed and stamina and was unlucky to lose, being in close quarters to the stretch. Eugenia Burch, away poorly, closed a bi? gap and finished like a whirlwind and was probably best as the race was run. Wild Thyme went well throughout. Miladi Love is improving. She is probably the best three-year-old filly of the year. Slipthrift is wonderfully improved and will hold hiB own with the best from now on. Heno prefers soft going, was outrun in the middle half and apparently beaten off on the stretch turn, bat came again and was fast wearing the leaders down at the end. Scratched 35038 Igniter, 117. Close Finishes at Hawthorne CLOSE FINISHES AT HAWTHORNE. The pleasant weather yesterday drew out by far the largest crowd of the week at Hawthorne, the grandstand being filled to repletion. The card, though mediocre in quality, was redeemed in a measure by several close and exciting finishes, that in the last race being of so close a nature that none but the judges were in a position to separate the first three. ' The most important race of the day was the fourth, a free handicap purse of $600 for three-year-olds arid upward. Burnie Bnnton was thought to be the best and was made the favorite, but the best she could do was to run third, Elsie L. proving to be much the best. Irene" Lindsey, showing much speed, showed the way to the last eighth, where Elsie L., which had always ran third, moved up fast and, assuming command at the last sixteenth post, won as her rider pleased by two lengths from Irene Lindsey, which beat Burnie Bnnton a head on the post for second place. Irene Lindsey was tiring fast in the closing strides. Burnie Bunton, badly outrun in the first half, closed up ground i fast in the last eighth and would have been second in a few more strides. Jane Holly hung on gamely all -through the- last sixteenth struggle. Harry New was outpaced and never a serious contender. The first race, a six furlongs sprint for three-year-olds and upward, resulted in a hollow victory for Wainamoinen. Georgie, showing much speed, led by a fair margin up to a furlong from home, where Wainamoinen gradually wore her down and won by rive lengths, going away. Qeorgie finished second, a length before Bubus. The latter finished strongly, showing much improvement over her last race. Moabina, badly outrun in the first part of the race, made up much ground in the final quarter. Tea Rose III. showed early speed and bears watching from now on. Jackfull at last got out of the maiden class, winning the second race, a five-furlongs scramble for maiden two-year-olda, by a half length in a drive irom Bad News, which beat Canyon five for second place. Bad News displayed the most early speed and appeared the winner when a furlong out, but showed a faint heart when challenged by the winner in the last fifty yards and tired perceptibly in the closing strides. It was strictly a three-horse race throughout. Bed Tip, after many efforts hereabouts this year, finally succeeded in winning, taking the third race, a one and one-eighth miles dash, in a hard drive by a head from Count 'Em Out, which beat Tizona a head for second place. Count 'Em Out was taken wide when turning for home, losing ground, but made it up fast in the last eighth and finished strongly. Tizona tired a shade in the closing strides. Do Madge was well spent when a furlong from home. Flocarline is in excellent form just at present and had little trouble outrunning the field in the fifth race, a dash of five and a half furlongs for two-year-old fillies. She led all the way, winning easily by two and a half lengths from Vestry, which beat Lady Jocelyn a neck for second place. Hattie Walker was bumped out of her stride at the start by Dodona and had no chance thereafter. Adios also met with interference at the start and did not have a chance when she got into her stride. The last race of the day, a dash of one and one-eighth miles, went to Lady Chorister by a nose before Filibuster, which boat Malay a head for second place. The track was good and fast and excellent time was made in the different races, Flocarline running five and a half furlongs in 1 :06 J, which is a quarter of a second faster than the previous track record. Local Turf Gossip LOCAL TURF GOSSIP. E. Corrigan yesterday protested the race of August 28 in which Hermencia, after winning, was disqualified, thus placing Scarlet Lily first and Mr. Corrigan's mare, Artena, second. Mr. Corrigan claims that S. S. Tracey, owner and trainer of Scarlet Lily, is still an outlaw, not having been formally reinstated by The Jockey Club since he raced on the Maryland outlaw tracks several years ago. Tracey has raced tor the last two years under trainers' licenses granted by both The Jockey Club and Western Jockey Club. The matter has been referred to the Western Jockey Club and, pending its settlement, Scarlet Lily will not be allowed to start. Her entry is therefore void in both races today, in which she was named to go. If the Western Jockey Club upholds Mr. Corrigan's contention all the money won by Scarlet Lily will be invalidated. The entry on Laura K. will be refused in future by the Hawthorne judges until she is properly schooled at the barrier. C. B. Ellison arrived at Hawthorne from the east yesterday. Mr. Ellison has secured first call on the services of jockey Jesse Mathews until after the Worth meeting. The judges at Hawthorne handed down the following decision yesterday : "After a thorough examination of the horse, Flying Torpedo, the ruling of September 16vrefnsine his entry on the ground of inconsistent running, is amended, and the horse's entries are refused by the Chicago Jockey Club only on a hard track and his entry will be received for muddy or deep tracks." M. H. Tichenor & Co. have sold the following horses to J. S. Bratton of St. Louis: Fatalist, John C. King, Bicycle and Helen Howard. Terms private. E. Trotter has taken Ravensbury, Style and Theory to St. Louis and will race them there in the interest of S. C. Hildreth. Notes of the Turf NOTES OP THE TURF. Cootey, Chicago. Your wager on Sardine was a draw. It was made and accepted in the second race of the day, and, when that race was declared off, all wagers were declared off. E. C. B. The parolee" on St. Minor and McGee was a loser. W. K., Chicago. , Trainer" McLaughlin had no entry in the third race at Sheepshead Bay last Saturday and your bet was a draw.
