Merito, show, 2 to 5. Lady Sterling, show, 7 to 5. Animosity, show, 3 to 1. Lucien Appleby's Good Race XUC1EN APPJLEBY'3 GOOD K4.CE. The track at Hawthorne yesterday was deep with slushy mud from the continued rains of the last two days, but despite the gloomy, inclement weather the crowd was much larger than on the day before. The most important race of the day was the fourth, a free handicap for three-year-olds at one mile. Lucien Appleby was made a staunch favorite, being held at 7 to 5 in the betting. He ran a splendid race and rewarded the confidence placed in him byahis many backers by winning handily from Jack Demund by a short half length. Corrigan finished third a nose behind Jack Demund. Robbins was slow in getting Corrigan into his stride and did not get to the lead until turning into the backstretch. Along in here he opened up a gap of three lengths on Jack Demund, but nearing the last quarter the latter closed up on him, the two entering the stretch on oven terms. About the last sixteenth Lucien Appleby gradually closed up on them and finishing strongly was gradually going away at the end. Jack Demund ran out slightly when nearing the half mile post ,., but recovered quickly. The first race, a dash of six furlongs for mares four years old and upward, went to an ontsider, Althea. Tea Rose III. led by a big margin to the stretch, but tired in the last eighth, resigning in favor, of Little Duchess II. and Lady Rice, but in the last fifty yards Althea closed up fast and won going away by three lengths from Ida V., which beat Little Duchess II. a head on the post for second place. The second race, a dash of seven furlongs for maiden two-year-olds, was simply a canter for Lord Touchwood, which ran Rankin into early submission and then came away without much of an effort, winning by eight lengths. Rankin finished second, five lengths before Senator Morrison. Rankin was much the best of the others a.id showed a decided liking for the going. Senator Morrison tired perceptibly after the first half had been run. Egg Nogg showed early speed, but tired fast in the last quarter. He was undoubtedly short and the race should do him much good. Wyola had little trouble in taking the third race a dash of one mile and seventy yards for three-year-olds and upward. Bedner, displaying keen speed, led by a good margin for the first half mile, where Wyola, which had been badly outrun up to this point, moved up fast and easily passed into the lead, winning by two and a half lengths from Lady Meddlesome, which beat Pirate's Queen a neck for second place. Lady Meddlesome was off flatfooted and was very slow in getting into her stride. Going down the backstretch she appeared to be hopelessly beaten off, but after the first six furlongs had been run, moved up rapidly, outstaying Pirate's 'Queen, in the last fifty yards' struggle. The latter stood a long stretch drive with gameness and finished resolutely. Compass was cut off at the first turn, losing ground. She saved ground by going next to the inside rail in the last quarter, but tired fast when the pinch came. Albart Enright ran well for six furlongs. The fifth race, a five and a half furlong dash for two-year-olds, was marked by several surprises, the red-hot favorite, Lady Jocelyn, finishing third, while Musical Slipper, which was beaten off the day previous, showed improvement and finished second. Hattie Walker, well off in her stride, showed much speed and, leading all the way, won in a canter by'two and a half lengths from Musical Slipper, which beat Lady Jocelyn three and a half for second place. Musical Slipper finished stoutly next to the inside rail. Lady Jocelyn labored heavily in the going all through the last quarter. She may havo been raoed too much of late. Hide and Seek showed a flash of early speed. Chicago Girl was never a serious contender. The last race of the day, a six furlong dash for three-year-olds and upward, was robbed of much of its interest by Moabina, the heavily-backed sec ond choice, running away two and a half miles when on hr way to the post. Her saddle slipped forward and J. Mathews was unable to stop her until she had run herself tired. She 'was led back to 'the paddock and another saddle substituted. This caused a delay of twenty-five minutes at the post. Little Jack Horner led from Scotch Plaid by a small margin in the first half, but when well into the stretch the latter came away without much effort, winning easily by five lengths from Orla, which beat Little Jack Horner one for second place. Moabina was given an easy ride, as she had no chance whatever after running away. Judicious ran well for a half mile. Page [2] THEGEORGIADERBY FOR 3-YBAK-OLDS AND UPWARD. Carmody stated Tuesday that the proposed new race track which he is promoting would in all probability be located on what is known as the Scott tract, a section of land containing 150 acres, and situated on the Hall's Ferry road. The land is owned by John W. Scott, a well-known contractor, who lives at 1200 South Ewing avenue. The land on which the track is to be located lies on the bluffs which overhang the river at this point. It is north of Calvary cemetery. The land is level and needs but little grading. Mr. Carmody said that it was his intention to establish a plant somewhat similar to that of the Delmar race track and garden in that there will be a summer garden and theater just south of the proposed race track. There will also be a club house on the ground. Mr. Carmody thinks that as there is not any Bummer garden in the North End this part of the enterprise will be a remunerative one, jSpeaking of the possibility of his securing racing dates from the Western Jockey Club, Mr. Carmody said that he would not break ground for..his track until he knew whore he stood. "I do not think the Western Jockey Club will do anything save what is fight," said Mr. Carmody. "I want a fair share of dates, and I think the Western Jockey Club will grant them to me. If I should not cot them I think that I can get a state racing commission appointed to allot dates in this state. I will not do anything until I know just whero I stand on the date question. It will not take me long to build my track, as the ground is level and almost ready." St. Louis Bepublic. Walter Jennings has engaged jockey L. Smith to ride for him in California during the coming season. The contract goes into effect December 1, at which date Smith is due to report to his employer. He will lonly miss about two of the meetings out!there, however, as the season will not open until November 15. As Mr. Jennings will have forty horses intraining Smith 'will have' a good opportunity. Gossip of the Turf IT ' . GOSSIP OF THE TURF. There is no doubt but the race meeting and fair which opens at Los Angeles, October 11th, to continue thirteen days, will bo one of the bost ever held in Southern California. J. W. Brooks, formerly of the California Jockey Club, who will manage the racing part of the two weeks' entertainment, states that the entries which closed Thursday of this week, contain the names of all the best horses, trotters, pacers and runners that are now on this coast, and there will be quite a number of runners from the east on hand and ready to participate when the meeting opens. The association has selected H. H. Egbert as presiding judge and F. E. Mulholland as starter. Both these gentlemen are well and favorably known to all race goers on this coast, the former having been race reporter on the Examiner for years, while Mr. Mulholland has held the same position on the Call. They have had experience in the positions they will occupy at Los Angeles. The Board of Stewards will be composed of Messrs. Willard Stimson, Q.L. Waring and J. W. Brooks. A. L. Cohen, of Fruitvale, will preside in the stand and do the starting for the harness events. Mr. Cohen has the confidence of the horsemen, and as he has a thorough knowledge of the rules and is fair and prompt in his decisions, his presence in the stand will do much to aid the success of the meeting. The Los Angeles track is said to be in superb condition, and as the entry list is very large, two weeks of high class racing will certainly result. San Francisco Breeder and Sportsman. Jockey Munro was fined $25 by starter Holtman for breaking through the barrier with his mount, Hub Prather, in the the third race. J. J. Marklein with a string of seven horses, and J. C. Milam with four, arrived yesterday from Canada. The entry of the horse Water Edge will be refused in future by he Hawthorne officials until he is properly schooled at the barrier. Kit Chinn arrived at the track yesterday from. Butte, Mont., where he has been acting as starter. Mr. Chinn said the meeting was a success in every way except financially, due to the operations of four pool rooms in the town. Eastern Racing Features EASTERN RACING FEATURES. j Concerning incidents marking racing at Graves-end the New York Sun of Tuesday says : "While the betting on the Gravesend races yesterday was comparatively light, the bookmakers had far and away the better of the argument with the public, as the only winning favorite was W. C-Whitney'e Slipthrift, in the closing event. Long shots held high carnival. The third race was won by Unterock. a chestnut filly, by Hamburg Petticoat,, which was quoted at 100 to 1 all over the ring. The filly is owned by Miles Finlen, the copper millionaire, who named her appropriately Unterock because that is the German word for Petticoat, the name of her dam. The fact that she was sired by Hamburg made numerous players back her with small bets, one of the best winners beiDg a well-known tipster who cashed a wager of $8,000. Another 100 to 1 shot, W. C. Daly's Carroll D., finished third in the Jflf th race, beating Templeton, also quoted at 100 to 1 by a short head. Other horses to get inside of the money at big odds were Potente, 10 to 1 ; Mabel Winn, 8 to 1 ; Durazzo, 25 to 1 ; Bouton-niere, 8 to 1 ; Earl of Warwick, 10 to 1, and Stuyve, 8 to 1. Only twice before this season have horses at 100 to 1 or more won on local tracks. Francis J. Lantry's Dr. Sayfor at 100 to 1 and D. Snow's Captain Gaston, which was at one time 200 to l,gothome in front. Last year Hengist, 100 to 1, won, together with Dactyl, at the same odds, but the latter was disqualified for fouling. Charley White, the well-known boxing referee, had a good bet on Duckoy, 100 to 1, in the fifth race yesterday, and though the Brutus gelding did not materialize White said that he would continue to back him in races to come. "When Unterock passed into the lead i in the last stride a pale-faced little woman in the grandstand uttered a shriek, threw her umbrella away and sank down, gasping for breath. "'I got it!' she cried, as other women looked at her in amazement. 'I got it! But it was only a dollar!' "The messenger who had taken her bet came up presently mopping the cold perspiration from his forehead. He counted out $100 with an expression on his face as if ho was undergoing a severe surgical operation. " 'I laid against,' he growled to a friend, 'and I had to make a quick touch in the ring for the coin or climb over the fence.' "The selling race war broke out afresh yesterday. Before the races Alexander Shields bought Andy Williams from John W. Schorr for $2,500. When Audy Williams won the Sea Breeze Stakes, in which he was entered to be sold for $1,800, 'Father Bill' Daly bid him up to $3,000, Shields keeping the colt with an extra $5. P. J. Gorman brought Mabel Winn oast some time ago, and the filly was taken out of a selling event by Dn Bois & Marryatt. Re-) cently this firm sold her to Pierre Lorillard, Jr., for $2,100. Gorman then bought her back from Mr. Lorillard for $2,500 and when she won the fifth race yesterday, in which she was entered to be sold for $2,000, C. J. Kelly, acting for S. S. Brown, bid her up to $3,000 and got her. Stuyve, who ran second, was originally the property of Capt. Brown, but Gorman bought the gelding out of a race at St. Louis. Then W. T. McGrath claimed Stuyvo some time ago here and yesterday lost him, as 'Fath er Bill' Daly took him for $2,580. "As regards the victory of Potente it may be said that he went up in the betting. Senator McCarren stated that he had a small bet on him to win, but backed him extensively to show. When asked if Mabel Winn had a chance, her trainer said that he did not believe she could beat Sadducee. But she was played just the same, there being as much as 10 to 1 on tap in the ring. As she came down the stretch well in front a colored stable boy over in the infield raised a laugh by waving a towel frantically and leaping into the air as if on springs. With every stride of the filly the boy yelled and. went off into the paddock uproariously happy. "J. A. Drake's horses, South Trimble, Martin-Burke, Conundrum and Runnels, were all scratched. In explanation, trainer Wishard said that they were suffering from high temperature and needed rest. Drake, who brought a large party of friends to the track, was visibly disappointed, for he intended to put down some of his familiar jjwagers. "Andy Williams created a new recordjfor the Sea Breeze Stakes. He ran the distance, a mile and a sixteenth, in 1:47, the best previous time being 1:48, made by Ethics last year, when the event was first run. " L. V. Bell has decided to retire Alcedo, the Suburban Handicap winner of last yoar, to the stud at the end of this season. Alcedo was severely injurod in the Brooklyn Handicap, and trainer McCormick , has been unable to get him into his old form since then. Mr. Bell bought Alcedo a year ago last fall from Pat Dunne for $10,000. "It is said that Tommy Burns, the jockey whose license to ride on eastern tracks was recently-revoked because of constant misconduct at the post, has received an offer of $20,000 a year in salary, with expenses extra, to ride in Austria next season. Burns' contract with W. C. Whitney expires at the end of this year. "The Earl of Rosslyn watched the races yesterday from a private box. He laid against Sadducee in the fifth race, betting $70 to $100 with one of his . friends, and then put $100 on Mabel Winn at 10 to 1 to win. He backed Zoroaster in the last event. "Circus, the winner of the Montgomery Handicap early in the season at long odds, arrived at Gravesend yesterday from Buffalo, in the care of his owner, W. Baldwin; H. Robinson's Syrlin, formerly Sevoy, also arrived." MONTHLY FORM BOOKS. The Form Book for August is ready for sale, and includes the racing of August 30. Paper cover, $1; leather cover, $1,50.
