Gloomy, rainy weather and the track deep with mud did not deter a largo crowd from going out to Harlem yesterday. A steady drizzle fell all afternoon fmaking it very difficult to see the horses. Much more inclement weather for racing could not be imagined. The sport was dull throughout, all the races being taken easily by the winners. The feature race of the day was the Tecumseh Handicap, a mile and three-eighths dash for three-year-olds and upward with $1,500 added. Much interest was taken from the contest by the scratching of Lucien Appleby. Aladdin' was made a 6 to 5 favorite and rewarded the confidence placed in him by his many backers by winning easily. Corri-gan, as was expected, led by a big margin up to the last quarter, where he fell away beaten and Flying Torpedo assumed command, but nearing the last eighth Coburn called on Aladdin and he easily passed into the lead, winning by a half length from Flying Torpedo, which beat Little Elkin eight for second place. Flying Torpedo rallied in the last eighth and finished strongly. Saaton was not strong enough to give him the vigorous ride he requires; Little Elkin tired in the last furlong. Corrlgan ran well for a little over a mile and then retired. Searcher ceas9d to be a serious contender after seven furlongs had been run. The stake was -worth $1,930 to the winner. The day's opener, a dash of six furlongs for three-year-olds and upward, proved to be an easy thing for Chickadee. Sandflea, closely pressed by Prue, showed the way to the head of the stretch, where Chickadee moved up, joined Sandflea in the last eighth and easily outstayed her to the wire, winning by two and one-half lengths. Sandflea finished six before Goldaga for second place. In the second race, a six furlongs dash for three-year-olds and upward, Fairbury proved to be the best, but his rider grew over-confident in the closing strides and came near throwing the race away. Fairbury ran Private Nolan into submission in the first half and then assumed a commanding lead. He appeared to be an easy winner in the last sixteenth, but Pirate's Queen came with a rash, causing Kelly to hustle him out at the end. He won by a head,, while Pirate's Queen beat Gracious nine lengths' for second place. Gregor K. is certainly a splendid two-year-old in a heavy holding track. He had little trouble in winning the fourth race, a dash of five and a half furlongs for all ageB. He led all the way, winning in a canter by three lengths from Jack Demund, which beat Duelist five and a half for second place. The long distance race went to the outsider Obstinate Simon. Star Cotton showed the way until nearing the last quarter where Alaska moved up last and when turning for home appeared to bo the winner but about the last eighth post Obstinate Simon easily wore him down winning by a length from Barrack which beat Alaska a head for second place. Alaska tired fast in the closing strides and would have lost second place in another stride or two. The last race of the day, a six furlongs dash, was taken by Banish, which beat Compass a head on the post, with Alee third, four lengths back. Brooklyn Form Chart BROOKLYN FORM CHART. ' GKAVESEND, N. Local race track patrons have been waiting to know what system of starting will be used during the four weeks of racing at the Worth track, which opens on Tuesday, and yesterday Ed Wagner announced that the recall flag will be dispensed with, and said that he believes the Worth Jockey Club's decision will meet with general approval. Dwyer will do the starting at Worth and there need be no doubt about his ability to do it jmccess ialljv'-forheiScar'dt&'Th Pacific Coast last winter and at Windsor this summer. Reports from the Worth track say it has dried out considerably during the last few days, and as it has not been torn to pieces by incessant galloping over it tho going: should bo quite good by Tuesday if no more rain falls. Accommodations for horsemen have been increased considerably since tho spring meeting, but the demand for stabling is so great that Secretary Jasper finds it impossible to take care of all. Tho now stables give 160 more stalls, and eight additional kitchens have been built. A good deal of tiling and draining has been done and altogether quite a lot of money has been spent since the close of the spring meeting. Tho fall meeting starts out with excellent prospects. The eight stakes have filled well and with horses of good class, and some strong stables on passage from New York to San Francisco will add interest to the local sport. "Lucky" Baldwin's stable has already arrived in charge of trainer Speifs, who brings with him Cruzados, Americano, El Chihuahua, La Goleta and other good ones." Green B. Morris has engaged fifteen stalls and will be on hand with Homestead, Old England, Sombrero, Cunard, Artvis, Durazzo and some of tho lesser lights. E. J. Arnold & Co. have written for twelve stalls and thoir string will include Fitzbril-lar, Folix Bard, Peaceful, Stranger, Icicle and others- Harry Stover is coming with Autolight, Eenil worth, Bedeck and Illowaho. Coburn will ride through the meeting, after which he goes to California, where he expects to ride for Burns & Waterhouse during the winter. Jesse Mathews also will ride through the Worth meeting and so will Buchanan. Entries for the first day will close at 10:30 a.m. Monday both at Harlem and Worth race tracks, and Secretary Jasper hopes to open the meeting with an attractive card if tho weather is propitious. Tho Flyaway Handicap will bo tho main feature of the opening day. Many good horses are engaged, and Secretary Jasper has assigned tho weights with skill and good judgment. J. J. Marklein was much chagrined over the fact that he had allowed his entry, Obstinate Simon, to run unbacked in the fifth race yesterday. In the horse's previous attempt Marklein placed $300 on the horse and on that occasion Obstinate Simon failed to finish in the money, whereas yesterday he made his field look cheap. M. N. Macfarlan, who presided at the Windsor meeting, returned yesterday to Chicago and was a visitor at Harlem. Mr. Shannon, the owner of Maxette, bst Mr. Herz, oftDurnell & Herz, $2.50 against $1,003 that he could pick six winners, naming the following: Chickadee, Fairbury, Aladdin, Gregor K., Alaska and Alee. After the first four named had been returned winners Mr. Herz offered Shannon $200 tocall the bet off. Mr. Shannon accepted Mr. Herz's offer, but was later porsuaded by C. R. Ellison to bet the $200 on Alaska. S. C. Hildreth denied yesterday the report that he had disposed to Durnell & Herz the horses Top-soil and Vulcain. The reported negotiations by the latter firm for the purchase of Lucien Appleby for $15,000 was also denied. The bad weather prevailing in and around Chicago will possibly cause several owners of the better class horses to ship away their strings during the next week either to California or eastern tracks. Among those who will probably race east until the closo of the season is C. R. Ellison.
