Unless present conditions undergo some material change, there is a very strong probability that Kansas City, which has been so long without a race track, will during the coming season have two, one of which will be at Fairmount Park and the other on some suitable tract on the Swopa Park boulevard. The directors of the Fairmount Jockey Club held another meeting recently at the Baltimore Hotel, Kansas City, which was attended by C. C. Christie, as a representative of the men who are backing the South Sidoproppsifcr'jn. While no definite attior. of any sort was taken, and the peace negotiations were not finally declared off, it served to show the difficulty of effecting any agreement between the two interests. Mr. Christie considers that the club simply invites him to come in and be swallowed, and as he refuses to coneider Fairmount Park as a site for a race track, there seems to be little chance for an agreement. Unless Mr. Christie's nerve fails him, it is almost certain that there will be two race tracks next year, as he will not join the Fairmount proposition, and the Fairmount people show an equally decided opposition to the South Side plan. "In my opinion," he said, "the only way to make a race meeting a success is to make it a society event, as the horse show is. In that case we have to take into consideration the people who drive, and not one would think of driving out toward Fairmount, while the boulevards south of town are very popular for that purpose, and the people we want would all drive out there for a racing meet. The others would come anyway." The chief point which the Fairmount promoters urged in support of their site was its great superiority in the matter of transportation, both for passengers and freight, "If a big fair is to be held," said J. D. Eubank, one of the directors of the club, "the matter of freight facilities will have to be taken into con-sideration, and we are oxcellently equipped in that respect."J The principal matters which were discussed by the directors of the Fairmount Club, aside fromjthe question of the site, were the amount of stock to be issued, and the grandstand. Both of these will be discussed more fully at another meeting to be held today. It has been decided to erect a grandstand at Fairmount Park, and, although the details of construction have not been arranged, it is almost certain that it will be of steel and will cost in the neighborhood of $50,000. H. B. Baker, of St. Louis, Mo., owner of( Jack Young, with which he won eleven races this season as a two-year-old, has purchased of Milton Young of McGrathiana Stud, at a private price, the bay yearling colt by Pirate of Penzance Mariet, by King Alfonso. He was shipped to St. Louis Saturday in company with the following four yearlings, which R. A. Baker, of Lexington, Ky bought for the St. Louis turfman at the McGrathiana sales in New York: Chestnut colt, by Tammany RhodaEGale, by JiJs Johnson. Brown filly, by Troubadour Rosary, by King Ban. Chestnut filly, by Handball-Mallow, by Falsetto. Brown filly, by Handball Flying Witch, by Duke of Montrose. Jfi Wintering at Louisville WINTERING AT LOUISVILLE. S.B. Weems, the locally well known correspond-ent'Jof Morning Telegraph, says in a recent letter from Louisville to his newspaper: "On my way here I stopped off to visit the Louisville race track, and found the stables there all filling up for the winter. Louisville is year by year growing in favor as a winter resort for race horses. The climate and the light sandy soil admit of out-door'work in all except the sovcrer weather, while trj)inersgcnfir3JIy consider - the-track '.oho one of the best early spring training grounds in the country. "John E. Madden, who hag developed at Louisville some of the best hones he has handled in the last few years, is back again in his old stable with some twenty-five yearlings. "E. Corrigan has sixty head at the track, including his yearlings ; P. Dunne, nineteen ; Capt. 8. S. Brown, forty-eight ; J. F. Schorr, twelve, and G. C. Bennett, eighteen. These two last named lots are all yearlings and they will be shipped on to Memphis shortly, where they will winter. 'Brown Dick' also has some of Fred Cook's horses at the track, and nine of John Fay's are located there. "There has been quite a bit of distemper at Louisville this fall, although the disease seems to be in a mild form. In the short time I was there I did not have opportunity to inspect the yearlings closely. There are, however, a number of very promising youngsters at the track. Madden has several that have been highly tried, and half a dozen in Captain Brown's lot look as though they might be close to Btake form. Two brown colts in ;the string, one by Troubadour and the other by Sir Dixon, are especially noteworthy. They have size and quality. A chestnut colt by Fonso is also a. good individual. "Captain Brown was a very liberal buyer of yearlings at the eastern sales during the season. He will winter a second string at the old Bascomb course at Mobile, and will control one of the most extensive stables in training next year. "P. Dunne thinks he has some extra good juvenile material. Several of his youngsters were under the weather and did not appear to good advantage. Three of his colts, all bays, by Star Buby, Basset-law and St. Andrew, are above the average in point of claEB and have shown enough in their trials to make them encouraging prospects. Charles Hughes will winter about thirty head at Louisville. "A new stable of seventy-two stalls has just been completed, and when other stables in course of construction are finished the stabling capacity of the track will be increased by about 250 stalls. "Other important improvements are in view at Louisville. The club was reorganized last spring with the idea of appealing directly to the society element of the city. Mayor C. F. Grainger was elected president, C. F. Price, secretary and manager, while the remainder of ..the directorate was made up of prominent business men, including M. J, Winn, J. C. Boardman, S. P. Jonas, W. E. Glover and Louis Seelbach. ''Mr. Price had previously for Jmany years been identified with the management of the club. He is known as one of the ablest racing officials in the weBt, and, with the high class men associated with him in the reorganization, Louisville racing ought certainly to increase in popularity. "A new clubhouse is to be built on the grandstand side of the track, and an effort will be made to establish a country club adjunct to the racing. This feature cannot fail to add to the patronage of the Louisville spring meetings, enlisting, as it will do, the support of the best people of the city. The Louisville Jockey Club has always opposed any and every attempt to overdo thoroughbred sport at that point. The wisdom of this policy is shown in the continued prosperity of the spring meetings there." , J " ' ' Page [2] IlLYKAeiNBM IB8UED HVEBY DAY WESTERN JOCKEY CLUB BULLETIN OITIOIAI.
