Daily Racing Form Foday lays before its readers the first carefully prepared statement that has ever been published showing the total yearly winnings of the thoroughbred in the United States as a whole. The period covered is the year 1902, from January 1 to December 31, inclusive. In the main the figures are official, but one item is an estimate that is more likely to be too small than too large. That is the allowance of .. 5250,000 to cover such meetings as Dallas, Los Angeles, Denver, Sacramento and the host of fairs and small meetings of various descriptions, at which purses are offered for the runners. I The -imposing, the surprising, feature of this tabulation is that it reveals the magnificent total of $4,662,424 as the gross earnings of the horses that raced over the tracks of the "United States in ,1902. This is at least a million dollars more than any expert would have named at an off-hand estimate, and is impressive evidence touching the vitality and iU'5iof of the; -American -'turf. Thn various racing fields contributed to this total as follows, in order of importance: New York (inc. Saratoga) $1,798,975 Chicago 786,305 St. Louis : 426,475 San Francisco 417,624 New Orleans 248,185 Washington 122,455 Latonia 121,010 Butte 113,950 Buffalo 75,950 Memphis 73,925 Louisville ...7..... 68,360 Charleston , '. 61,825 Highland Park v 42,405 Nashville 20,025 Providence 12,300 Newport .. 11,730 Little Rock .. 10,925 i Miscellaneous (estimated) 250,000 Total $4,662,424- Aside from this colossal aggregate, American owners participated extensively in Canadian racing, the returns from the recognized meetings being as follows: Fort Brie (two meetings) ..$ 81,270 Toronto (two meetings) .. 55,477 Windsor (one meeting) 43,215 Hamilton (one meeting) 10,015 Total 1 $189,977 By dint of industriously campaigning from San Francisco to New York and back again, the veteran trainer and owner, Green B. Morris, enjoys the satisfaction and fame of heading the list of winning owners- of 1902. His margin over the Chicago owner; John A. Drake, is not a great one, but is sufficient. The $92,120 of the Drake stable was nearly all won by two horses, Savable and Wyeth. F. C. McLewee & Co., who rank third, won their $84,730 with their two magnificent racers Gold Heels and Major Daingerfleld. August Belmont's fine total of $77,466 was won by horses of his own breeding. One thing stands out plainly enough in the list of winning owners, and that is that S. C. Hildreth would nave been the leader had he retained the horses he sold to D.urnell & Herz, the money they won for the latter firm, added to his own credit of $71,375, being more enough to have enabled him to lead Green B. Morris. Owners whose liorses made satisfactory returns last year were those of J. W. Schorr, Barney Schrei-ber, Whitney & Duryea, G. C. Bennett & Co., L. V. Bell, S. S. Brown and P. Dunne, nd also the one-horse stable of Mrs. L. Cur-tis. The stables of Messrs. J. R. & F. P. j Keene, W. C. Whitney, A. Featherstone and i J. B. Haggin won respectable sums, but because of their big strings and many disappointments were all probably on the losing side. A little analysis will show that western stables make a good showng. Of the thirty-seven stables that won $25,000 or more twenty-one are western owned, and in this Green B. Morris is credited to the east, when as a matter of fact he might with equal propriety be credited to the west. The table following gives the winnings of all stables credited with $5,000 or more: Owners. Amt. Owners. Amt. G. B. Morris $93,350 J. H. Baker & Co..$10,420 J.A.Drake 9.2,120 J. Burrows 10.S9D F. C. Durham 10,500 A speedy weight-carrying and staying three-year-old Major Daingerfleld is the leading winner among the horses of 1902. His splendid total of $57,685 was gallantly won and he was probably the best three-yearold of the year, although that is a matter the admirers of Hermis and McChesney consider open to debate. A two-year-bid, the Futurity winner, Savable, comes second, with $46,100 to his credit. Third, fourth and fifth places are also filled by two-year-olds, two splendid representatives of the four-year-old and upward class in Gold Heels and Advance Guard, being sixth and seventh in the winning list. That the richest prizes of the turf are for the two-year-olds and three-year-olds is amply demonstrated by the fact that of the twenty leading winners of the year only four were four years old or more, Gold Heels, Advance Guard .Blues and Flying Torpedo, the other sixteen winners of the twenty being nine three-year-olds and seven two-year-olds. Harlem's Stake Offering HAELEM'S STAKE OFFERING. A $10,000 stake is offered by the Harlem Jockey Club to be run on the opening day of the spring meeting this- year. This announcement was made yesterday by Secretary Nathanson, ,in connection- with, a list of twelve important events to be decided at Harlem Park during the spring and ; summer meetings, the entries to which will close February IS. The $10,000 stake is practically a new one, although it retains the name of one of the feature fixtures of the Harlem Jockey Club the Harlem Stakes. As remodeled, the event is built upon the lines of the Brooklyn and Suburban Handicaps, and its value is the same as those two stakes have been until this year. Heretofore the Harlem iHan-dicap has been at the distance of a mile ai.-J,-an eighth, with $3,500 added; and last year, with its entrance and starting fee$, it was worth $5,585, and was won by John Bright. In its new form the Harlem National Handicap is at a dlstantfMawafHjBggaHaa tflKHHHHHHBHHHHHHMM warranted in believing that it, will, its value will be increased next year to $15,000. It is the hope of Secretary Nathanson to further, increase the value to $25,000 in the third or fourth year of the existence of the Harlem National. The weights for the Harlem are to be announced :March 16, and declarations are due April 6, two months before the race is to run. It is probable that future books will he opened on the Harlem, as upon the Brooklyn, Suburban and American Derby. The list of twelve spring stakes announced, for Harlem Park is the same as 'last year, excepting the big handicap. Next to it in importance is the Twentieth Century, which has the. same added money ($5,000)', with an estimated gross value of $7,700. Last year the stake was won by tne .English horse Scintillant II. in the American record, time of 1:57 2-5. This eyent will be run on Monday, September 7, as the Labor Day attract tion at Harlem Park. Another feature which does not appear in the list because of being an over-night, event, is' the. Derby Trial Special, which, as its name indicates is designed as a test for the eligibles for the Derby, being run three days before that race. The list of twelve spring stakes, is composed of five for three-year-olds and upward, the Harlem National, Twentieth Century, Chicago, Austin and Garden City;two , for three-year-olds, the M. Lewis Clark and Riverside; and five for two-year-olds, the Petite for fillies, the Graduate for colts, and the Youngster, Proviso and Junior, None of the twelve events has less than $1,500 added, and the smallest estimated value- of any one of the number is $3,000. The subjoined table presents the salient points of -the twelve stakes to close February IS: . FOE THEEE-YEAE-OLDS AND DPWAED. Stake. ' Dist. Added. Val. Besides the increase in the value of spring stakes as shown by the foregoing table, the value of each of the fall stakes will be increased in value ranging from $250 to ?1,000. The fall stakes will close as heretofore in July. Not only has the club increased the added money of. its list of fixtures, but a substantial increase is promised for the purse and over-night r.vces. During the forty-three days of racing at Harlem Park in 1903 the racing association expects to distribute at least $200,000 in stake and purse offerings. In the list of stakes to be opened and closed in the summer, provision will be made for the steepelchasers. With only two weeks' racing assigned to it preceding the month of August the Harlem Club deemed it inadvisable to offer special prizes for the spectacular form of the sport. The race meetings preceding and following the Harlem spring meeting for the most part do not include steeplechasing in the list of attractions. The better class of cross-country material therefore, could not be expected tc I come for so short a period, to be idle before and after the short interval of racing at Harlem. Later cross-country racing will receive special attention and liberal offerings will be made for this class of performers. - "With ihe announcement of the twelve stakes .to close February IS entry blanks will soon be distributed to the horsemen throughout the west. Later in the month Secretary Nathanson will make trips to the east and south for the purpose of interesting the own-'ers of high-class, thoroughbreds in the rich program which the club he represents has to offer.L If he weather is at all propitious he expects the Harlem spring meeting to open with a hurrah as well as a big $10,-' 000 feature race, besides the M. Lewis Clark ' .Stakes, the Derby Trial and three or four other stakes. Page [2] WINNERS Two good Things Each Day a Specialty. The famous mare Catherine of Navarre, 3am of Terra Firma and full sister to Henry f "Navarre owned by Captain S. S. Brown, of Christiansburg, Ky., was booked Friday to the young sire Hawkswick, owned by H. T. Oxnard. This is the first mare booked to the good son of St. Simon, out of Plaisanterie, and Captain Brown visited "Willamette stud, the place of Colonel John B. Ewing-, to inspect him before mating. Len Marders, the Lexington trainer, has decided to move his racing string to Memphis and put them into training for the early spring racing. He has about ten head, including some promising two-year-olds and a few aged campaigners. He will leave about the 10th. The track at Montgomery Park last Friday morning presented the appearance of a duck pond but trainers took advantage of the middle field and exercised for the first time this year a few prospective candidates for western derbies. Trainer Brazier, who is handling Skilful, Charley Ellison's three-year-old son of Mirthful, had his colt out and gave him strong gallops over the turf and hills that form the Montgomery Park steeplechase course. Skilful' s first start will be made at the Memphis meeting in a purse affair. "He will not be prepared for the Crescent City Derby," said Brazier, and as he is not entered in the Tennessee Derby, the indications are that Ellison intends reserving Skilful for the American Derby. Other colts likely to be prominent factors in the betting in the winter book on the Chicago Derby were out and sent over the grass course in strong gallops. Rightful, half brother to Endurance by Right, from John W. Schorr's stable, and three other colts from the same barn, including Janeway and the maiden colt Stromonit, were given gallops. Another American trainer has been engaged to go to Austria. This time it is Frank Van Ness. The nobleman who has secured his services is Baron Blaskovits. The baron's string of racers is well known in France, Austria and Hungary. His stud farm is near Buda Pest. Jockey Yancy, who formerly rode for J. Follansbee, will go abroad with Van Ness and ride the baron's horses. Notes of the Turf NOTES OF THE TURF. J. R., Chicago. You are mistaken.
