Eastern Stakes EASTERN STAKES Stake events to be decided at the spring meeting of the Metropolitan Jockey Club at the new Jamaica track have closed. The most important fixture is the Excelsior Handicap for three-year-olds and upward, with 35,000 added, at a mile and a sixteenth, for which the weights will be announced on March 12. In view of the liberal nominations for other races of this kind, it is expected that the Excelsior will attract all of the crack handicap horses in training for the eastern campaign. The other races for horses of the older division are the Montague Stakes. $2,000 added, at a mile and a sixteenth; the Kings County Handicap, 1,500 added, at six furlongs; the Newtown Stakes, $1,000 added, at six furlongs, and the Corona Stakes, $1,000 added, at a mile and seventy yards. The stakes for three-year-olds include the Fulton Stakes, $1,500 added, at a mile and seventy yards; the .."Williamsburg Handicap, $1,500 added, at six furlongs, and the Columbus Stakes, $1,000 added, at six furlongs. For two-year-olds there are the Rosedale Stakes, $1,500 added, at five furlongs; the Bushwick Stakes, $1,500 added, at five furlongs; the Suffolk Stakes, $1,000 added, at four and a half furlongs, and the Elmhurst Stakes, $1,000 added, at five furlongs. The Bennings Spring Handicap have attracted forty-seven entries, which closed last week. The leading nominations are Namtor, Himself, Daly, Early Eve, Athelroy, Alan, Sergeant, Clonmell, Wealth, Syrlin, Demurrer, Circus, Animosity, Arden, April Shower, Toscan, Athlana, Merriment, Jerry, Red Damsel and others. The Spring Handicaps are run on the first and last days of the "Washington meeting. "While the horses nominated for this year's events are not of the best quality, they are of much better class than those entered in previous years. The principal entries for the Carter Handicap, to be run on the opening day of the Aqueduct meeting, are Hermis, Francesco, Paul Clifford, Injunction, Palmist, Gimcrack, Tam o'Shanter, Namtor, Ethics, Himself, Daly, Illyria, Wax Candle, St. Daniel, Royal, Ordnung, John A. Scott, Janeway, Young Henry, Numeral, Potente, The Regent, Knight of Gold, Remorse, Wealth, April Shower, Monograph, Duelist, Silurian, Minotaur and others. Additional entries to the Metropolitan Handicap are Waswift, Sidney C. Love, Flocarline and Sambo, the total number received to date being sixty-five, with California yet to be heard from. Hayes Horses HATES' HORSES. T. P. Hayes, better known on the turf as Tom Hayes, the Kentucky horseman, who has campaigned the circuits for many years, has in training at Cumberland Park, Nashville, Tenn., one of the largest stables in the west. The list includes thirty head, and with but one exception, Lady Strathmore, the horses are two, three and four-year-olds. Twenty-two are baby racers, while seven are three-year-olds. The string is headed by the Derby candidates, Orlando, Outlaw and Pirateer, three of the most promising maidens to be found anywhere. Of the three Orlando is the only one that has ever started. He faced the flag twice as a two-year-old, but finished out of the money both times. Pirateer and Outlaw went amiss early in their two-year-old forms and were turned out. The horses were the best tried yearlings around Nashville last winter, and but for their ill luck they would probably have cut a big figure in the juveniles. Orlando struck himself soon after being taken east last summer to fill his engagement in the Coney Island Futurity. The trio are exceedingly promising, and Hayes is of the opinion that they will develop into grand three-year-olds. The animals are good lookers and bred in right lines and are well developed. Orlando, which is the best liked of the three by Hayes, has -improved wonderfully. He has grown a great deal and is a horse of rather long range. The horses have been in active exercise all the winter, and are now being prepared for the Cumberland Derby and other events. Gossip of the Turf GOSSIP OF THE TURF. The Crescent City Derby will be run on Saturday, March 14. The distance is one mile and an eighth. It closed on Saturday, November 15, with 117 entries at $5, of which fifty-seven remained in January 1, at $20. There will be another declaration February 21, and those remaining iirtheieaf ter will" be assessed $20 more, and the starters mnst pay $100 each. The added value is $2,500, so, calculating that thirty remain in February 21, and ten start, the stake will bo worth $5,825, out of which $300 goes to the second, $300 to the third and the fourth saves his stake. Whitney this year, will ride no more at New Orleans, bnt will go east as soon as he entirely recovers from the injuries sustained at the Crescent City track last week. Redforn has too valuable a contract to fulfil with Mr. Whitney to take any further chances, and hiB present employers, Durnell & Herz, cannot hold him longer by the terms of the contract the boy signed with them recently. While the jockey's injuries may have something to do with his unexpected departure from New Orleans, it is believed that his father, who recently had trouble with the stewards, is making the move because of personal reasons. Redfern has never come so near fatal injury in his career as in last week's tumble and he is in need of a rest, it is said. Those who saw the mishap say that it was only through a miracle that the boy was not killed outright. G. B. Morris is 6aving Sombrero for the Brooklyn Handicap. The colt will receive a special preparation for the big Graveaend race. Morris will also begin training Old England at Ingleside for coming engagements. The Goldfinch gelding has had a long and much needed rest this winter, and is said to be ready for a long campaign. The horses of W. L. Lansing, including Henry McDaniel, will hereafter run in the name of Lansing's father, R, G. Lansing. Lansing has sold Page [2] AMERICAN 8PORTING MANUAL. J. K., Kansas City. From our own correspondents exclusively. H. W. T Chicago. Witfull has started in twenty-seven races, won four, been second once and third twice. P. J. Nolan has added Monos to his string. He bought the horse from Willie Martin. The price paid is said to be $1,000. Constant Reader : The horse was plainly printed Bummer II. in the entries and you were bound to take notice that it was not the old Bummer. Your wager lost. Abe Garson has sold to J.W. Pangle the two-year-old, Bank Holiday, by Ben Holladay Gypsy. The filly iB a half-sister to Flying Torpedo, and the price was $300. A. C. L., Chicago. The track on the day you specify was not fast or hardly in the state ordinarily called good, but was as called in our chart, meaning that in a day more without rain it would rate from good to fast. The two broodmares Alice V.. by Saxon Wildfire, by Wildidle, and Elite, by Eland Peri, by GleDgarry, owned by Major T. J. Carson, are dead of pneumonia at Dixiana Farm. Both mares were famous producers and were in foal. The recent experiments of the track superintendent at the New Orleans Fair Grounds in running an asphalt burner over bad holes in the going are likely to prove successful. A deep spot at the finish was so treated with the result that it was almost as hard as macadam. Dan O'Brien, the trainer of moving pole notoriety, has purchased of Edward Frazer, of Lexington, Ky., for a private but long price, around $2,500, the three-year-old chestnut colt Longino, by Long-flight Fannie W. Fonso, by Fonso. The colt was raced by J.. C. Milam last season. Ingleside Form Chart INGLESIDE FORM CHART. SAN FRANCISCO, CAL., February 17, 1903. Eighty-first day. New California Jockey Club. The Breeder and Sportsman of February 7 has this to say of a proposed city racing circuit in the west: "James W. Brooks, manager of the Los Angeles Jockey Clnb, which organization was recently prevented from holding a thirty-day race meeting by the passage of a city ordinance preventing betting or races in Los Angeles, has about completed the organization of a racing circuit which is on the largest scale of anything heretofore attempted for spring and summer racing on this Coast. According to the Lob Angeles Herald, Mr-Brooks and his associates, Jim Davis, Bart Cava-naugh, L. B. Eaton, Caesar Young and Zick Abrams, propose to establish a circuit of six cities along lines similar to those of the Western Jockey Club and have already completed their negotiations in securing a foothold in Butte, Mont., and Great Falls. Work is now being done in Seattle, and Portland will probably be made a part of the circuit. Sacramento and Los Angeles are also included in the scheme, the former to be the place for a short spring meeting and the latter to have the closing meeting of the season, as it is believed the Los Angeles council will not restrict fall racing in the southern metropolis, but amend the ordinance so as to permit it. The Herald says : "A winter meeting in the south would be a part of the scheme if certain conditions could be made to work in harmoney with the plan of the promoters. There is some talk of taking in Denver and Salt Lake, but Manager Brooks, who is presiding judge and manager of the combination, hardly favors going so far east. "Brooks was asked if the new proposition did not mean a syndicate book. He stated that conditions in each of the cities would probably govern that part of the matter. In the northwest the betting faternity does not know what any other kind of a book looks like, as the worst 'cinches' in the history of the sport have been regular features there. " 'We intend to give liberal prices, for we will be able to offer them,' says Mr. Brooks. 'Oar plan is to have the circuit arranged as nearly on the Western Jockey Club plan as possible. Each club would be represented at our meetings. We would have a regular governing body, and intend to allot dates as they are desired, having an eye always to decreasing the railroad hauls of the horses. The scheme would be a splendid one for the horsemen, and I believe it would elevate the sport greatly here in the west, for there has always been a need of soma such governing power as that we propose to offer. We could get the best horses, and with them would be sure of the right kind of sport. Of course, much of our planning hinges on the Los Angeles end, but if we cannot get our foothold here we will race north.' " Brooks states that the capital stock of the project is ample and that the scheme should be a good moneymaker eventually, though there will be a loss to foot the first year or so."
