Page [1] Au Revoir's Fast Mile. AU REVOIR'S FAST MILE. Worth is certainly being favored with good ] •weather for its spring meeting, and the attendance thus far has been all that could be desired. By far the largest crowd of the ' week was present yesterday and was well ; Tepaid, for the racing was contested throughout, and was productive in several instances of close and spirited finishes. The feature race of the day, the fourth, a handicap purse of $600 for three-year-olds and upward, resulted in somewhat of a surprise, and was also a source of keen disappointment to those that had backed Autumn Leaves, undoubtedly the best horse in the race at the time. This fast filly was thought by the talent to be the best and was the medium of heavy backing, but got off "badly and failed to finish in the first three. The winner turned up in the lightly-weighted Ahola which was lucky in getting away in her stride to a bad start She tiptoed the field for the entire distance and was never headed winning in a hard drive by a head from The Lady, which beat Bra-shee a half length for second place. Ahola stood a last sixteenth drive well, but was tiring at the end. The Lady showed much improvement and is rounding into her best form. Emshee was interferred with at the turn for home and hardly got clear sailing until a sixteenth out, from which point he closed up ground fast. If You Dare ran to his best form and finished going fast. Autumn Leaves was fiat-footed when the barrier went up and was practically left at the post. Robbins, however, went on with her and persevering throughout, closed up a big gap, finishing lapped on If You Dare. Many had been led to believe by the showing made here by Au Revoir at this meeting that he hardly cared to go - over seven furlongs, but he gave the lie to this opinion by winning the third race, a spin of one mile •for three-year-olds, in a big canter. Lin-■guist was regarded as much the best, being held at about 8 to 5 in the betting, but he Tan a dull race and failed to finish in the first three. To a good start The Don, showing his customary speed, led by a fair margin until just after entering the last quarter, where he fell away beaten, retiring in favor of Au Revoir, which moved away from the field fast in the final furlong, .winning in a canter by two and one-half lengths from Soothsayer, which beat Mimo a nose •on the post for second place. Soothsayer •did some bumping while running next to the inside rail at the last sixteenth post. Linguist •was pocketed while going down the back-•.stretch and swung wide when turning into the stretch, losing much ground. He was sunder punishment in the stretch and tired •fast in the last sixteenth. This race should •do him much good. Thane had an easy race of it in the fifth, a mile and seventy yards dash for four-year-olds and upward. Dr. Stephens was suffered to set the pace for the first seven furlongs, •where Thane, which had been running along -within easy call of him, was called on and went to the front in a few strides winning as his rider pleased by three-quarters of a length from Dr. Stephens, which beat Caliban three lengths for second place. The last named ran a promising race for a horse that had not started in. months, and bears watching from now on. An unwieldy field of thirteen started in the day's opener, a six furlongs dash for maidens three-year-olds and upward, the ] ' ; winner turning up in the heavily backed favorite Irby Bennett, which really made those back of him look cheap. He ran The' Rabbit into early submission and then came away with ease, winning by four lengths from Merryflight, which finished three before The Rabbit for second place. Merryflight, off poorly, ran an excellent race being much the best of all but the winner. The Rabbit showed speed for five furlongs. Feby Blue retired beaten just after turning for home. Don Domo was easily the best of a field of six two -year-olds in the second race, a four and a half furlongs scramble. Off well in his stride he led from start to finish, winning well in hand by two and a half lengths from Determination, which beat Capitol eight for second place. The race was strictly a two-horse affair. Lord Tennyson, Miss Hortense and Crusoe were caught napping when the barrier went up and by the time they had gotten into their full stride were practically out of the race. The last race of the day, a dash of one and one-sixteenth miles for three-year-olds and upward, went to John A. Clarke", with Will Sherry second and Bonnie Lissak third. Betting was heavy throughout the day and the track very fast. ' Morris Park Form Chart. MORRIS PARK FORM CHART. WESTCHESTER, N. Y., May 8, 1903. — Second day. Westchester Racing Association. Seminole trailed for half the journey, and being saved while going up the hill on the back-stretch made good with a winning stretch run and scored a lucky victory. Gould was excessively used early in the race and tired and was swerving in the stretch run. Ohnet, after forcing the pace for nine furlongs, was crowded against the fence on the inside losing a half dozen lengths, but recovered ground rapidly at the end. McGrathiana Prince, from a rearward position on the backstretch, was raced up the hill into prominence and was tiring and swerving in the last quarter. The latter appeared unable to get out of close quarters until in the last furlong, when he finished fast under the whip and ran a game race. Andrattus followed the winner's pace closely for five furlongs, then went wide on the stretch turn losing much ground, but gamely disposed of the others after a long stretch drive. Pittacus, poorly ridden and improving his position in the last half, was going fast at the end. Sister Juliet was poorly handled and well up at the finish. Brigand, away poorly, closed a big gap and finished with a rush and was probably best today. Love Note outran all but the winner for the first six furlongs, but was tiring . and swerving badly at the end and should be improved by the race. Akela was making up ground fast at the end. Tristesse overcame a lot of interference in the first furlong and on the stretch turn and her effort was a good one. Jockey Coburn left last night for Louisville, Ky., where he will ride the Bennett entry Sanctum in the Nursery Stakes, to be decided today. H. N. McTyerie arrived yesterday from Nashville, Tenn., with the following horses: Charley Thompson, Carrie I., Pea Ridge, Uncle Ruben and Frances Yowell. M. Jordan reached Worth yesterday from Baltimore, Md. His four horses, including Fingal, will arrive today. Merryflight, which started in the opening race yesterday, is reported to have worked recently by moonlight six furlongs in a fraction better than 1:14. Evidently some one else besides her owners shared the secret of the great flight of speed she had shown in her workouts, for the price posted against her chances was a small one, considering that in her only previous start she had been left at the post. In yesterday's race she was again away poorly, but chiefly on account of jockey Robbins' slowness at the barrier. The midget rider was also responsible for the failure of Autumn Leaves, her stable companion, she being practically left. Had they both been sent away on even terms it is more than likely that they would have won their respective races. Bmshee, which was heavily backed in the fourth 'race, was nearly thrown down at the stretch turn by The Lady. Otis on the former was about to make his run and attempted to go through next to the inside rail, but Pirrman on The Lady pulled in, forcing Otis to pull up to keep from going down, and effectually destroying Emshee's chances. Linguist's poor performance yesterday was a disappointment to a number of his admirers who had imagined him to Have a chance in the American Derby. His trainer, W. Phillips, could not account for the horse's bad showing other than to say- that he attempted to run out on all the turns. The Orland Stakes, at one mile, which is carded for decision today, contains a goodly number of horses with pretensions to class (Continued on fifth page.) LOCAL TURF GOSSIP. Lord Tennyson, Miss Hortense and Crusoe, Avhich started in the two-year-old race, showed their lack of schooling to the barrier, and shied when starter Dwyer released the gate, causing them to be practically left at the post. Jockey Henry permitted his mount Mimo to swerve when about to draw his whip and bump Soothsayer. The latter in turn caromed into The Don, which was nearly thrown down by the mishap. GETTING READY AT LATONIA. : The Latonia officials are confidently look- ^ ing forward to the best meeting held at their . track in recent years, and horses are arriving daily in considerable numbers. Several important western stables will start their • horses for the first time this year at the La- '' tonia meeting, Baker & Gentry and Oots \ Bros, in particular. Of recent arrivals at 1 the track the Enquirer of yesterday says: 1 "The colonization of Latonia for the spring \ meeting which is to open one week from • "Wednesday next was augmented yesterday 1 by the arrival of forty-three horses, the prop- ] erty of Clay Bros., Oots Bros., Baker & 1 Gentry and W. J. Young. 1 "Besides the three-year-old bay gelding i Monsieur Beaucaire, by Sir Dixon— Ollie 1 Glenn, there were seven two-year-olds in the i outfit of Clay Bros., which came up from ; Louisville during the night in charge of the colored trainer, French Brooks, and were taken off the cars about G o'clock. Flying Ship, Paris and Dungannon, having stake engagements, were left at Louisville. The following are the two-year-olds in the string: Lady Amelia, br. f, by Ben Brush— La Col-onia. Lonsdale, br. c, by Flying Dutchman— Ollie Dale. Memories, br. f, by Sir Dixon— Merdin. Nisbal, ch. f, by Hindoo— The Niece. Outcome, b. f, by Sir Dixon— Ollie Glenn. Bewitcher, ch. f, by The Commoner— Janie Clay. Sallie Catlett, ch. f, by Flying Dutchman— Magna Charta. "Of this lot Memories, Outcome, Sallie Catlett and Lady Amelia are entered in the Clipsetta Stakes, Paris and Lonsdale are in the Harold Stakes and Lady Amelia, Paris and Lonsdale are candidates for the Cincinnati Trophy. "Oots Bros. —Howard and Edward — brought up ten head from Lexington, and they are the best looking lot of horses that ever occupied a stable on anybody's racetrack. There are three eligibles to the La-tonia Derby in this stable, but that does not necessarily mean that they will all be seen in colors on the opening day. First Mason, the chestnut son of First Mate— Manola Mason, consequently a half brother to McChes-ney, is the one which will most likely represent the stable in the Derby if he can be got ready. He has grown into a nice looking horse, and has the appearance of a weight carrier, but Mr. Oots says that he has not sent him a mile in his work as yet. Novelist and Moyle are the other eligibles. The fromer is really the best looking three-year-old in the barn. He worked a mile yesterday afternoon, kicked out, in 1:4S, and the track was in fine condition. "Moyle is a great big horse, but his legs appear faulty enough to prevent any such rushing as it would now take to get him ready for the Derby route ,by the 20th. The brag horse of the collection is a dark gray two-year-old colt called Turando, by Far-andole— Turtle Dove. He is of good size, well shaped, quick, but not nervous, and they say he is lightning in action. Ho comes here with five-eighths in 1:025 over the hard track at Lexington to his credit. He is a candidate for the Harold Stakes. In addition to these the string contains Axares, Owen More, Extol, Almanzo, Darnivon, a three-year-old chestnut colt by Blanton— Brigazee, and Murmur, a two-year-old filly by St. Flor-ian— Mollie Pitcher. This string got in about C o'clock and were put away in the barn facing the five-eighths ground. "The strings of Baker & Gentry and W. J. Young came up on the same train from Lexington. They were loaded in the Bluegrass City at C o'clock yesterday morning, and at 10:30 they were off the cars and in their stalls. The Baker & Gentry string is in charge of the well-known trainer 'Jack' Baker and numbers thirteen, of which nine are two-year-olds, as follows: Marseilles; b. f, by Sir "Walter— Lou Dudley. Artimesia, br. f, by Albert— Annie Layne. Flo Manola, ch. f, by St. Florian— Manola. May Combs, b. f, by Charaxus— Merry Maid. Silk Maid, b. f, by Esher— Kate Pelletier. Fred Lazarus, b. c, by Charaxus— Sanci. Henry "Waite, ch. c, by Hermence— Han-selle. Marshal Ney, b. c, by Dr. Rice— Glenore. Fritz, b. c, by Scorpion— Linderlette. "In addition to these are the three-year-olds, F. A. Bullock and McLaughlin, the latter by "Wagner— Flora Thornton. He 1 was thrown out of training as a two- : ^ . • '' \ 1 1 \ • 1 ] 1 1 i 1 i ; year-old, and has never been to the races. He is a fair looking colt, but 'Jack' says he don't call for much. Then of course, there is G. W. W. and J. "W. Rhodes. The former looks in fine shape. Last year he caught pneumonia while en route to Louisville, and it was not until late in the summer that he was able to race. J. "W. Rhodes has grown into a great big horse, and looks like he might be useful in handicaps. He is entered in the Brewers' Handicap along with F. A. Bullock, and he will be a starter if he can be got ready. The horses are all in good health and look trim. The two-year-olds are a clean-limbed lot. The raciest looking one of the outfit is the filly Artimesia. She along with May Combs, is entered in the Clipsetta Stakes. Marshal Ney and Fritz are candidates for the Harold Stakes. The former is the better looking colt of the two. For the Cincinnati Trophy May Combs and Marshal Ney have been named. May Combs is a likely looking little miss which has shown a half around 50 seconds, which is stepping some at Lexington, considering the condition of the track." Louisville Form. LOUISVIIXK FORM. The best riders at each track will be given the uniform rating of 100, and from that point the others will be graded down according to their estimated relative skill. For a difference of five points between the jockeys three points change in the handicap figures assigned the horses in any race must be made.
