Improvements At Hawthorne. IMPROVEMENTS AT HAWTHORNE. Extensive improvements have been made at the Hawthorne track this spring, all of which are not yet completed. Patrons of the track will perhaps be disappointed in not finding the famous Cicero course as fast as In the past. An inch and a half of sand has been placed on the track and this will perhaps tend to make it from a second to a second and a half slow. A mile in 1:42 will be exceptionally fast. Ninety carloads. of sand have been placed on the inside track, making it even in wet weather a safe course to work over. The promenade in front of the grandstand has been entirely relaid and raised some two feet, thus making a good view of the races from every point of it possible. An asphalt flooring has been laid about the refreshment booth. The entrance has been considerably Improved and is now the finest of any racetrack in the city, while new dressing rooms have been arranged for the benefit of the ladies, and the restaurant fixed up in a manner to make it a model place of its kind. Beau Ormonde's Fast Mile. BEAU ORMONDE'S FAST MILE. Despite the fact that yesterday's card was of an off-day quality, the usual large attendance was on hand at Worth and witnessed some excellent racing. It was marked by a very fast mile in the fourth race, an owners' handicap purse of $700, for three-year-olds and upward, the distance being covered in 1:38 flat, which equals the mark made by Orimar at Washington Park two years ago. Of the five scheduled to start Rankin was the only absentee. Beau Ormonde was made an even money favorite with Golden Rule second choice. The latter acted kindly at the post and broke with the field. He shot to the front at flag drop and opened up a gap of one length, an advantage which he maintained until well straightened down the backstretch, where Beau Ormonde moved up fast and passed into the lead near the half mile post. He retained his advantage until just after passing into the final quarter, where Huzzah moved .up on even terms with him. From the last eighth post to the wire they fought it out stride for stride, Beau Ormonde winning by a nose with Golden Rule third four and a half lengths back. Beau Ormonde never flinched for a moment in the strenuous last sixteenth struggle and ran as true as an arrow. Huzzah stood a ishes .of the year thus far took place in the I second race, a four and a half furlong scramble for two -year-olds, three of the field passing under the wire in so close an order that none but the judges were in a position to say which finished first. Peter Paul, on the strength of his good showing some few days ago with Dick Bernard, was made a 6 to 5 favorite, but many fancied Manshak and he was well backed at 9 to 5. To a good start Manshak rushed to the front and displaying a great turn of speed opened up a gap of two and a half lengths. Entering the last quarter, however, St. Paula and Peter Paul began to move up fast on him. When a sixteenth out it appeared as if Henry might be able to hold Manshak together to the wire, but the colt began to falter when hard pressed. In the closing strides Peter Paul and St. Paula closed up on him and in a stirring finish Peter Paul got his nose in front, with Manshak the same distance before St. Paula. Peter Paul was slightly cut off just after turning for home, but closed up ground fast when he got clear sailing. St. Paula rallied in the last sixteenth and finished going fast. Tom Rees ran well for three furlongs. The time, 54 seconds flat, was two-fifths of a second faster than the previous track record. The day's opener, a dash of six furlongs for three-year-olds,* resulted In a victory for Tom Maybin, the well backed second choice. Filly Deck led by a fair margin up to the run for home, where Tom Maybin passed into the lead and held Floral Wreath safe all through the final sixteenth, winning handily by a neck, with Hindi third, one length back. Hindi was pocketed badly just before turning for home and was again pocketed for a short spell when opposite the last eighth post She finished going fast when she got a clear path. Merryflight showed well for four and one-half furlongs. Filly Deck was well beaten after showing speed for five furlongs. Zibia had little trouble annexing the purse of the third race, a dash of six furlongs, to her owner's credit Carrie I. acted as pacemaker for the first five furlongs, where she began to tire and it was an easy thing for Zibia to pass her, winning well in hand by one length from Sister Kate II., which finished three before Carrie L for second place. Sister Kate IL ran in much improved form, (Continued on second page.) long stretch drive and showed great game-ness. Golden Rule was thoroughly beaten when turning for home. Flying Torpedo sustained the terrific pace for a little over four furlongs and then fell away beaten. One of the closest and most exciting fin BEAU ORMONDE'S FAST MILE. (Continued from first page.) making up ground rapidly in the last quarter and finishing going fast. Carrie I. had enough when opposite the paddock gate. Lola L. finished strongly and bears watching from now on. Merciful fell and broke her neck after running a short sixteenth. John A. Clarke had an easy time of it in the fifth race, a dash of one and one-eighth miles for three-year-olds and upward, winning in a canter by five lengths from Dutch Carter, which finished one and one-half before 3Ioor for second place. Bonnie Lissak went well for six furlongs and then fell away beaten. The concluding race, a dash of once around the track*, for four-year-olds and upward, proved to be an easy thing for Omdurman, which easily passed into the lead when .Moroni, the pacemaker, tired In the last eighth, winning going away by five lengths from Moroni, which just lasted long enough to beat the fast finishing James J. Corbett a head for second place. Dyxona, the favor-• ite, bowed a tendon during the race and was eased up in the last quarter. Morris Park Form Chart. MORRIS PARK FORM CHART. WESTCHESTER, N. Since his .good race in the Powers Handicap the Bennett four-year-old has been backed freely, and his price has been cut steadily from 30 to 1 until last night 6 to 1 was the best to be had. If Coburn gets down to weight he probably will be allowed the mount, but Henry McDaniel will not stand for an ounce of overweight. Glen Water has been backed into second place, at 8 to 1. Hernando stands steady at 10 to 1. Wyeth has been cut from twenties to 10 to 1; so has Gregor K, and Linguist is on the same mark, his price having been reduced from 15 to 1. Lucien Appleby's price has been shaved from 50 to 40 to 1, on account of $100 being bet on him after his good showing in a sprint two days ago. Pat Dunne's English horse, Red Comyn, Has been well backed this week and is looming up as a dangerous competitor. Several loads of sand have made the track at Hawthorne slow and heavy, and a mile in 1:44 is considered good work. Plenty of rolling and harrowing is expected to make some improvement before the opening day. Yesterday morning Hargis worked a mile at Hawthorne in 1:49, and Little Scout in 1:52. The Lady stepped five furlongs in 1:09; Sav-able reeled off a half in 511 seconds and Skilful in 52 seconds. Harry New's mile in 1:46 was the best work done by any of the Hawthorne Handicap, horses. At Worth Favonius was sent an easy mile in 1:45; Banter six furlongs in 1:173. Sam Fullen was worked at Worth by A. Forbes slowly in 1:47. Trainer R. Tucker got in yesterday with Capt. S. S. Brown's string of twenty head. Horsemen's badges for the Hawthorne meeting will be distributed at 2 p. m. today in the secretary's office at Worth, and at Hawthorne Friday morning. No badges will be issued Saturday. Entries for Saturday's races at Hawthorne will be received up to 11 a. m. Friday at Worth by Secretary Jasper, who will serve as entry clerk at the Chicago Jockey Club's meeting. A representative of the club will be at Hawthorne until 11 a. m., and another will be at Harlem until 10 a. m for the same purpose. Entries for next Tuesday's $800 handicap, and for the $500 steeplechase to be run the same day, will close at Hawthorne Saturday morning. W. H. Knapp, who rode her, said that she went down in a heap, without any apparent cause. The rider escaped unhurt. Harry Beck is on the ailing list and will not be started for some time. Mr. Milam recently refused an offer of $2,500 for the horse. It was announced yesterday that jockey S. Bonner, who rode some creditable races in California, would ride Lendin in the Hawthorne Handicap. Dominick was .too ill to accept mounts yesterday, suffering from cramps. S. C. Hildreth shipped all his horses yesterday from the Worth track to Harlem. Jockey A. Hall, who has been under contract to ride for Hildreth, has been released and will ride in future free lance. Jockey H. Phillips, who rode Beau Ormonde in the handicap yesterday, was recently released by his contract employer, J. Arthur, and will in future ride free lance. Frank J. Bryan, the new presiding judge at Hawthorne, will arrive in Chicago today from Latonia, where he went to see the running of the Derby at the conclusion of the Louisville meeting. Lester Reiff arrived in Chicago yesterday from California, and is expected to remain here during the summer. Worth Form. WORTH FORM.
