McChesney worked well at Harlem Park yesterday morning for trainer Hildreth, who declares the western champion will be right at his best for the Harlem National Handicap a week from Saturday, if no bad weather intervenes. T. C. McDowell was so pleased with the way his great colt Allan-a-Dale came out of his mile-race at Latonia on Monday that he has written to reassure the Harlem Jockey Club he has a "sure starter and probable winner." This was Allan's second start this spring, after being laid up for a year subsequent to winning the Kentucky. Derby. A few days ago McDowell tried him in a six-furlong race and was pleased when he ran second and cooled out all right. Now he has done the same at a mile. With another race or two he will be about ready for the mile Varid three-sixteenths at Harlem, June 6. jMonarka, from the same stable, also is being fitted for the big Harlem race. ••Belle's Commoner made this season's debut in the same race, but was plainly short for a mile trip the first time out. He and Six Shooter and the Derby colts Dick Welles, kCollonade and Bernays will not reach Har- ■fin Park for a week. ^Carroll Reld, trainer' for Middleton & ^^wbluth, has wired Secretary Nathanson of the Harlem Jockey Club that his stable will reach the Proviso course today or tomorrow. He has The Picket, Shooting Star and Manru in the $10,000 Harlem National Handicap. John H. Morris has written he expects to arrive at Harlem about the end of the week with fifteen horses of his own and George J. Long's stable. They come from Louisville. Fred Cook, who has Linguist and Lendin in the Harlem National, says he has thirty-three horses stabled at Harlem. Local Turf Gossip. LOCAL TURF GOSSIP. Charles A. Wolfe has arrived from the east with Pride of Galore and Examiner. J. C. Cahn's bay mare South Breeze, by Sir Dixon — Lake Breeze, is coming up from St. Louis to run in Saturday's two mile race, the Prairie Stakes. John A. Drake's chestnut colt Ort Wells, by King Eric — Tea's Over, and therefore a brother of J. B. Respess' Derby candidate Dick "Welles, is one of the list among the two-year-olds carded to start for the "Vernal Stakes this afternoon. Though a full brother of the famous Dick and somewhat similarly named, there is a difference in the spelling. There are two "e's" in Dick Welles, but Ort Wells is named after a broker in the Board of Trade office of Harris, Gates &. Co. Assurances received from owners by Manager Kuhl and Secretary Clark of the Chicago Jockey Club lead them to believe both of Saturday's stake races will have large and representative fields. There is a lot of speed among those likely to start in the Flight Stakes, at six furlongs, those that probably will sport silk being St. Minor, Nellie Wad-dell, L'Etrenne, High Chancellor, Sweet Billie, Toah, Golden Rule, Tom Maybin, Skilful, Beau Ormonde, Orfeo, Burnie Bunton and Wainamoinen. The field for the two-mile race, the Prairie Stakes, which is a selling sweepstakes for three-year-olds and upward with a gross value of nearly $3,000, is likely to be drawn from Barrack, Little Elkin or Rankin, South Breeze, Red Comyn, John McGurk, South Trimble, Nitrate, Rolling Boer, Flying Torpedo, Satin Coat, Potheen, Favonius, Gin Spray and Sam Fullen. In addition to the two stakes Saturday's card will include a high-weight handicap at five furlongs, a steeplechase handicap, an open race for two-year-olds, and a purse race at a mile. Harry New, which recently went amiss while being prepared for the Hawthorne Handicap, will be blistered and rested for a time. S. L'Hommedieu bid up Lampoon, the winner of the closing race, to $1,700, an advance of $800 over his entered price, trainer R. Tucker bidding him in. Jockey Dominick, who has been riding the last few days in St. Louis, will arrive today and will have the mount on Linguist. He will return tonight to St. Louis and ride there until the opening of Harlem. Starter Holtman stated' that Sam Fullen would not break when asked to do so by Jockey Booker when the barrier was released. Dodie S. was injured in her last start, and will not be raced again for some time. Jockey Helgesen was called up in the judges' stand after he had landed Lampoon the winner. The judges gave him a sharp lecture and informed him that riding his mount in front one day an trailing the field the next, would not be tolerated, and that if he wanted to continue his vocation he must in future be careful how he rides. Flying Torpedo was quoted at 5, 2 and evens in the majority of the books after he had run away. The prices against the others were Hargis 4 to 6, Airtight 3 to 2, First Chip 6, and Hoodwink 8 to 1. Ohnet was with great difllculty restrained back to his field and it was clearly apparent from his subsequent trying effort to get home in front that nearly if not quite all the strength Ifiid been choked out of him. He fenced well and was much the best. Draughtsman, skillfully placed, evidently relished the slow early pace, coming with a rush at the end and is in extra good form at preserft. Victor was outcalssed at the weights and finished in front of Gould on sufferance. The latter trailed his field on the extreme outside throughout and Hunt rode a bad looking race, which was apparently foreshadowed by the betting. Moroton is improving. Gibson Light lost so much ground in taking the obstacles as to eliminate him from the contest when a, long way from the finish. Scratched— 39048 C. Rosenfeld, 135. Draughtsman, show, evens. Ink, on the Inside and energetically striving to keep up as the field went down the declivity, came to the front on the last rise, coming off by himself at the end. Pipe made a determined bid for the lead in the last furlong simultaneously with the winner, but weakened under pressure and was swerving all over the course. Thoughtless is fast and perhaps faint hearted. She acted riotously at the post and got away poorly, but "was forcing the pace well in hand for half the journey, then unexpectedly failed to stay, although she regained her lead over Bellgardo in the last stride for third honors. The latter loomed up a contender at the end of five furlongs and fell away. Northern Light was indulged with a slight lead for about four furlongs. Futurita, inadequately handled, got away badly and after going the longest way around finished with a rush and was easily second best. Joe Cobb gave the winner a serious argument for nearly seven furlongs and tired. Evidently not keyed up for a bruising contest, he may reverse this later on. Off in front, he enjoyed clear sailing with the advantage of a pacemaker for six furlongs and outstayed the others in a driving finish. McWilliams, away poorly and losing ground on the turns, got on even terms in the stretch and seemed to have the race won, but a bungling finish beat him. Knight of the Garter was nearly left and closed a tremendous gap, going all around his field and was wearing the leaders down fast at the end. King Carter was a moderately close fourth and his race was an improvement. True Blue beat the barrier and made the most of it, but failed to stay. Gannon's tactics on Injunction, in being content to trail the other two after the first half, stood him in good stead when it came down to the final drive, as he caught them tiring badly and won going away right at the end. Girdle moved up to Blues suddenly and unexpectedly on the far turn and easily disposed of him in the stretch run, only to be in turn passed by the winner. Mr. Whitney's fine filly was probably unlucky to lose in spite of not yet being quite on edge. Blues, away flatfooted, was at once rushed into a ridiculously long and ill-advised lead and with the others right on top of him at the end of seven furlongs, he palpably sulked. The somewhat dull sport at Hawthorne yesterday was relieved by the sensational performance of Flying Torpedo. The Ezell & Lazarus gelding was pitted against four other good horses in the fourth race, a dash of one mile for three-year-olds and upward. Just before going to the post he was backed into favoritism. In one of the false breakaways the barrier pulled Blrkenruth off his back arid he ran away one and one-quarter miles before being stopped. It seemed like a hopeless case for him when he was brought back to the barrier, but to the astonishment of almost everyone present he put up a splendid race and turned a looked-for defeat into victory. To a poor start First Chip, off flying two lengths in front, opened' up a gap of eight lengths while going down the back-stretch, with Flying Torpedo second and the rest all strung out, Nearing the turn for home Flying Torpedo gradually closed up on First Chip and by the time the last eighth post had been reached was on even terms with him. From here to the wire Flying Torpedo held First Chip safe, winning easily amid a thunderous shout of applause by two lengths with Airtight a beaten-oft third. Barring Sam Fullen, being left at the post in the second, the other races were devoid of features out of the ordinary line and • were easily won by Glisten, Muresca, Crest, Lou Woods and Lampoon, respectively. The attendance was large and the track deep an_5 tiring. Every .effort is being made to improve its condition, a difficult task In view of the rain fall. With good weather it would soon be safe and good, but cannot be fast again until its sandy covering has been worked .in. 1 Page [6] I""*™, CHICHGD JOCKEY CLUB ™^ HAWTHORNE RACE TRACK SIX RACES EACH DAY, BEGINNING AT 2:30 P.
