Proper ran as if he outclassed the field, maintained a prominent position to the stretch turn, where he drew away with ease and won running off. Yardarm, away in front and in his stride, was passed in the first furlong and pinned tightly against the rail and lacked the speed to come out of his close quarters, which was possible. He was crossed in the stretch, but finished fast, although swerving badly, and has been overrated. Sun Gold, on the outside and away slowly, raced around his field and was closing up well at the end. Rosetint was badly interfered with on the backstretch and near the finish and was never dangerous. Forward ran a steady and game race, but was evidently outclassed. Navasota displayed brilliant speed and made the running for the first half. Blue Jay finished well up and was making up ground at the end. Scratched— 39328 Rostand, 110; 39385s John A. Adjidaumo practically forced the pace around, then he went wide on the first turn, losing "his advantage, which he regained slowly but surely and finally wore Fulminate down after a terrific drive on the flat. The latter trailed his field under a stout pull, fencing finely and appeared a sure winner when he suddenly shot into the lead in commencing the last lap. In addition to several costly blunders over the last two obstacles, he tired in the run home and was unlucky to lose. Tankard was a prominent contender for two miles and failed to stay, but would have been closer up at the finish but for running out at the Liverpool. Lavator was going strong and jumping well when he fell at the end of nine furlongs. Scratched— 39354 Judge Phillips, 152; (35420)Beau Ideal, 147; 39354 Semper Ira, 135. Adjidaumo, show, 2 to 1. Vagary fell in behind the two leaders, which had raced out into a long lead, and wore them down in handy fashion at the end. Walterin was given an over-anxious ride and in her premature efforts to wear out Bluish she beat herself and was staggering and unable to stall off the winner's unexpected rush. Although flagging, the Schorr filly struggled on gamely and was actually going the fastest of the two at the finish. Bluish forced the pace for three furlongs under a pull, but failed to stay. JDublln, away running, forced a heartbreaking pace throughout; and was a very fit and good horse today. Water Boy, still on the big side, was the strongest kind of a factor in the race from start to finish. Under a choking pull while going around the first turn, he was forced out of his position, but hung on gamely and at the finish was running faster than the winner. Herbert came with a rush and dropped into third place right at the end. His Eminence got away slowly and was crowded on the first turn. When the pace was fastest on the far turn he was seen moving up and passing horses and. finished out the journey in steady fashion. He is at his best over a longer distance, however. Hermis, big and lusty and undoubtedly a great horse this year, tired after following the winner closely for seven furlongs and was palpably short. LOCAL TURF GOSSIP. Judge Bryan and his associates handed down the following ruling after the races yesterday: "After a thorough investigation of the running of Flying Torpedo we suspend indefinitely jockey Birkenruth, and order in future the entry of the horse Flying Torpedo be refused. The ruling in regard to the horse shall not apply to stake engagements already made." The above ruling bars the horse from starting on all tracks over which the Western Jockey Club has jurisdiction, excepting in stake races for which he was nominated before yesterday's decision. Safeguard, the winner of the second race yesterday, was again bid up by "Kansas" Price $300 over his entered price, and bought in by his owner with an advance bid of $5. Secretary Russwurm, of the Nashville Jockey Club, was among the visitors at the track yesterday and will remain in Chicago to witness the running of the Harlem National Handicap. Much rough riding and crowding while going around the turns was again in evidence yesterday. Judge Bryan has lately cautioned several jockeys, but it seems to Jiave had very little effect. Handsome Florry, which started in the Lassie Stakes, was crowded and nearly 1 - thrown down ^while rounding the first turn / and her chances of winning destroyed. After the race Judge Bryan questioned. Houbre • as -to what had caused the mishap, but the 1 rider, could not positively state who was to I blames for ihe. crowding. ^ W. Bisset placed $1,000 with "Kid" Weller yesterday at odds of 10 to 1 on Allan-a-Dale in,, the Harlem National Handicap. The wager is supposed to have been made for J. A. Drake. The Don will in future be barred from starting at Hawthorne until properly schooled to the barrier. Harlem Handicap Features. HARLEM HANDICAP FEATURES. "Twenty-one starters, supplemented by seven possible or doubtful starters, is the present outlook for the Harlem National Handicap's field, and it looks as if at least twenty horses will go to the post for the big race on Saturday," said Secretary Nathanson yesterday evening after receiving information from every possible avenue as to the intention of owners and trainers at Harlem, Hawthorne, Latonia and St. Louis. Twenty starters will break the record in the United States for a winter closed handicap, and it is somewhat remarkable that both the top weight and the bottom weight, McChesney and Manru, are likely to sport silk in the Harlem National. Gorman & Bauer wired the Harlem secretary from Latonia last night that they probably will send Sinner Simon, which won the fourth race at that track yesterday, to run in the big handicap in which his weight is ninety-three pounds. John F. Schorr also wired from Latonia that he does not think he will start Esherin on account of her having incurred a penalty of four pounds by winning the Latonia Oaks Tuesday. From St. Louis T. P. Hayes wired Secretary Nathanson that Jordan will start only if the track is muddy. Jordan is being trained at the present time by Enoch .Wish-ard, the clever director of John A. Drake's stable. Sam Morton's black filly Hoodwink is the latest to break into the ranks of starters for the Harlem National. Her weight is 103 and she will be ridden by the stable jockey, J. Booker. By winning at Hawthorne yesterday Fa-vonius attracted some backing in B. J. Weller' s future book. John McGurk worked a good mile at Hawthorne yesterday morning in l:45g, Runnels three-quarters in 1:30. The horses now deemed likely to start are: Horses "Wt. Jockeys. The track had dried out considerably at Hawthorne yesterday and comparatively fair time was made. The largest crowd of the week was present and witnessed a good day's sport. The feature race of the day was the Lassie Stakes, a five-furlong dash for two-year-old fillies. Shawana, against whose chances as good as 4* to 1 could be had, proved the victress, winning by one and a half lengths from Ida Davis, which finished three and a half before Wreath of Ivy. Ida Davis broke through the barrier, unseating her jockey, jumped over the fence and ran away about a quarter of a mile before being caught. Taking this into consideration she ran an excellent race. The stake was worth $2,130 to the winner. The third race, a one and one-sixteenth miles dash for' three-year-olds and upward, was won easily by Favonius. He led all the way winning by one length and a half from Airljght, which finished a half length before Red Comyn for second place. J Falkland was much the best in the first ; race, a five .furlongs dash for maiden two-year-old colts and geldings. He won by one and one-half lengths from Preakness, which beat Auditor three and a half for .second place. Safeguard, well ridden by Winkfield, took | the second race, a dash of once around the ] track, by two lengths from Lord Melbourne, ! which finished one and a half before Canyon for second place. Alene Abbott was best in the fifth race, a dash of one and one-sixteenth miles for four-year-olds and upward. She led all the way, winning by two and a half lengths from Loone, with Wing Dance an indifferent third. The last race, a six furlongs dash, went to Mimo by a neck from Glassful, which finished a nose before Epicure for second place. Hawthorne Form. HAWTHORNE FORM. Canyon tired slightly in the last sixteenth. Robbins appeared too light to ride him with the strength he requires. Nimble Nag ran fairly well for six furlongs.
