A GOOD STEEPLECHASE. * The moderating weather of yesterday was instrumental in drawing out a large crowd to Harlem, the best attendance of the week ( being present. There was no stake race up for solution, but the card was well made up ( throughout and was productive of a good day's sport. The principal attraction was the steeple-chase handicap over the short course in which a field of twelve faced the starter, . not a horse on the card dodging the issue. The race was remarkable from the fact that the entire field went over the course without , a horse falling, the only mishap occurring at the fifth jump, where Somersault ran out. Crest proved to be much the best and simply played with the field. She is a- grand jumper •and one of the best seen here in a long time. She led from start to finish, winning easily by five lengths from Allegiance, which beat Ninos a head for second place. Allegiance ran well until just after turning for home, Tvhere he began to tire. Ceylon and Beana ran well up to the fourth jump. The opening race, a dash of five furlongs for two-year-olds, proved to be an easy thing for Ort "Wells, held as second choice in the betting. Freckman, off well in his stride, showed the way to the head of the stretch closely attended by Toltec, but when straightened out for' home the latter fell away beaten. In the final eighth Meade brought up Ort "Wells and he had little trouble in passing Freckman, winning going away by three lengths, the latter finishing the same distance before Frank Carr for second place. An unwieldy field of fifteen faced the barrier in the second race, a six furlongs dash for three-year-olds and upward. The winner turned up in Bay Wonder, against whose chances as good as 6 to 1 could be had. Off in front well in his stride, he led from start to finish, winning handily by a half length from Sarah Maxim, which finished two before Best Man for second place. Sarah Maxim was crowded out of position at the start, losing ground, but made up the lost space in the final half and was running past horses fast at the end. Best Man made up much ground and ran an impressive race. Irene Mac tired when a sixteenth out after making up considerable ground from a slow beginning. ' Mike Strauss met with much interference. My Surprise ran out at the head of the stretch when in a contending position. The fourth race, a dash of once around the track for three-year-olds and upward, witnessed the defeat of the favorite, Warte Nicht, supposed by the talent to be the best. Dan McKenna, showing improvement, led to the stretch, with Warte Nicht second, but here Jack Demund, which had always been lying within easy call of the winner, moved up fast and easily passed into the lead winning by two lengths from Serge, which beat Dan McKenna the same distance for second place. Serge finished with a rush. Dan McKenna was well spent when entering the final eighth. Warte Nicht ceased to be a serious contender just after turning for home. Prodigal Son showed a little early speed. The fifth race, a dash of six and a half fur-* Jongs for three-year-olds and upward, resulted In another surprise, Wainamoinen, the even money favorite, failing to finish inside of the money. Glassfull proved to be-the . best, putting up an excellent performance. Uranium, 'displaying a sharp turn of * ( ( . , speed, showed the way to the head of the stretch, with Wainamoinen second. When a furlong out it appeared as if Uranium would prevail, but in the closing strides Glassfull came with a rush, winning by a half length, Uranium finishing one before Ontonagon for second place. The last named ran an impressive race, making up much ground from a slow beginning and finishing resolutely. Wainamoinen faltered badly in the sharp, last sixteenth struggle. Headwater rallied in the last eighth and finished going fast. The concluding race, a dash of a mile and seventy yards for three-year-olds and upward, witnessed another defeat for the favorite. Galba was made a 2\ to 1 first choice, but second was the best he could do. Blue-mint, showing much speed, led all the way and had enough left at the finish to stall off Galba's determined challenge, winning by a nose, with Milas third, four lengths back. Galba stood a long drive through the stretch but could not quite get up. Sherry appeared to have a chance just before turning for home, but fell away beaten when well straightened out for the finish. Goldaga showed early speed. The track was in excellent condition and fair time was made in the various races. Local Turf Gossip. . LOCAL TURF GOSSIP. The M. Lewis Clark Stakes for three-year-olds at a mile and a furlong, with a gross value of $3,500, for which a fine field of eleven of the most prominent American Derby candidates is carded, will be run at Harlem today. The variety of weights in the field is due to the various allowances. If all eleven carded start, the race* will be worth $2,880 net to the winner, and with two added starters he would win $3,005 net and then would incur a penalty of three pounds in the American Derby. The probable starters and riders are as follows: Banter, 117, Crowhurst; Savable, 112, C. Gray; JEarly, 112, J. Winkfleld; Linguist, 112, Henry; Gregor K., 109, P. Phillips; Bernays, 109, T. Knight; Gilfain, 109, J. William; Bad News, 106, Landry; Estrada Palma, 105, H. Booker; The Picket, 105, J. Reiff; Manru, 105, Helgesen. M. H. Thichenor & Co.'s string of horses, including the American Derby candidate Flocarline, in charge of trainer H. C. Riddle, arrived Thursday from the east, and is now quartered at Washington Park. All the horses stood the trip well and appear to be in grand form. Jockey Otto Wonderly, who is under contract to ride for the stable, also got in yesterday. It was reported that C. R .Ellison had made P. Dunne an offer of $3,000 for Glassfull which was refused. L. N. Hodges, the owner of Ontonagon, Is reported to have stood to win $40,000 had the horse finished first. He placed a sufficent sum on the horse to show to leave him a profit of $1,800. Jockey Dominick left last night for St. Louis, where he will ride Lendin in the Derby. Jockey Coburn who will ride Au Revoir, went to the Mound City Thursday night. The judges excused Sidney Sabath from ! starting in the last race, it being reported to them that the horse was sick. Dick Welles' debut as a three-year-old on a Chicago racetrack will be keenly watched, and as many tickets have been written on him in the Derby future books, there is much interest in his race today. Judge Himes is a doubtful starter in the $700 handicap, and Prince of Endurance is not of Derby caliber. Brooklyn Form Chart. ! BROOKLYN FORM CHART. GRAVESEND, N. Y., June 12, 1903.— Fourteenth day. Ascension displayed brilliant form in the going and her race today emphasized the decided improvement in her form over any previous year. From a lucky start she quickly went to the front and easily retained her lead to the finish, being much the best today. Invasion ran a great race and for a furlong held the winner, but was crowded back on the turn, then came again in the stretch and was an easing up second. Brixton, which was badly ridden and bearing out on the turn, raced prominently throughout and at the end was going fast on his own courage. The Musketeer got away poorly and ran an inexplicable race. Mud was formerly his forte and it may be that he has changed in that respect. Baikal showed up well and can do better. Damon and Osgood fell out of contention early. In fact, no such fast running has ever been recorded, track conditions considered, and yet he sustained it throughout with such pertinacity that the favorite, when called on in the last quarter, could never get to him. Hermis, on which Rice evidently had waiting orders, trailed for six furlongs within striking distance and he was held under a choking pull for six furlongs in spite of the terrific clip, but when called on he failed to make good, although closing up a considerable gap on the winner in the final furlong.
