The track at Washington Park yesterday-was slushy without being sloppy. There was no water visible on the surface and the going was soft but not holding. Patrons of the ring experienced trouble picking choice mud performers, but in each of the events there was a pronounced favorite. In the first race Patsy Brown, played strongly, proved a poor selection. He ran unplaced and did not even encourage his backers at any point. Lord Touchwood and Lucien Appleby, respectively mediums of plunges on the second and third races, were beaten in head finishes. In the last three races Flying Ship, Sylvia Talbot, and Serge, which were supported by an abundance of what is termed wise money, proved worthy of the esteem in which they were held. Throughout the first race Touchstone led the two-year-olds that faced the barrier in that event. He won cantering by over three lengths in the very good time, considering the track, of 501. Pirate, a 15 to. 1 chance, got the verdict in the second race because Lord Touchwood was pocketed from the middle of the back-stretch to the last furlong post and in the end had to squeeze through between Bar-rica and the rail, while Pirate, on the outside, had clear sailing. Little Bobbins, who rode the favorite, moved up to Barrica, the leader, in the backstretch and tried to pass on the inside. L. Jackson, on Barrica, checked the move and Lord Touchwood had to drop back alongside of Pirate, ridden by L. Wilson. The latter took care of the favorite until it was time to make a move to win. Bobbins made a drive to get through at the head of the stretch, but Wilson forced him behind Barrica, the latter being close to the rails. Finally, when Pirate challenged Barrica, Robbins made a desperate drive, sent his horse through on the inside of Barrica and then gave the winner a hard contest, the finish being so close that many expected to see the favorite's number posted. The surprise of the day was the defeat of Lucien Appleby by Schwalbe. Barney Schreiber's filly led throughout. The favorite closed with her coming into the final quarter, but she carried him wide when straightening out and secured an advantage of a length. Henry drew his whip, when there were three-sixteenths to go and Appleby gamely stood a long drive. The filly, however, lasted long enough to win by a head. A mile and seventy yards event for three-year-olds, the fourth event on the card, resulted in a romp for Clay Brothers' filly Flying Ship, carrying 107 pounds. Epicure, packing 122, was easily second. Barney Schreiber's colors reached the goal in front for the second time during the afternoon when Sylvia Talbot won the fifth race, at six furlongs. She made all the running and won as she pleased. John Peters was lapped on her and Skilful was a close third at the end of a half mile. A few strides afterward she had a lead of three lengths and there was no semblance of a contest at the finish. John Peters weakened in the last eighth and ■was beaten out by Skilful and Fleuron. Ed Corrigan's Serge captured the last race, a selling event of a mile. Harry led around to the homestretch, entering which Serge was in a pocket, with Belle Mahone ov tside of him. Bonner, on Serge, would net stay pocketed. He forced out Belle Malic ne, went through and was up with Harry Ik fore a hundred yards of the homestretch i ■ had been traveled. Thereafter the result was a foregone conclusion . The Picket has a filling on the inside of the pastern joint of his left fore leg and a couple of small scars on the joint. The swelling extends up the leg about three inches, but would hardly be observed by anybody excepting an experienced horseman. Carroll Reid, who trains the winner of the Derby, discovered that the leg was filled when the colt was taken back to the stable after his record breaking victory. He immediately applied antiphlogistine and bandaged the leg. Sunday morning a veterinary who was called refused to pass an opinion, but directed that the application of antiphlogistine be continued. Yesterday evening, by request of Carroll Reid, John Rodegap exabined the filling. After the leg had been washed clean he made a critical inspection of the enlargement. He found neither inflam-ation nor soreness. When he rubbed and pressed with considerable weight against the affected spot there was no sign of sensitiveness, the colt paying no attention whatever to the investigator. "It doesn't worry him, but it does worry us," said Reid. To this Rodegap added: "No, he is not a bit sore. He didn't care what I did and I tried to see if I could make him betray evidence of pain. There is no bowed tendon and the only trouble is that he may have ruptured the sheath of a ligament. He may have been kicked or may have struck himself, but the injury does not appear to be serious. At that it is one of those little things that cause Apprehension." The reports that eastern turfmen had made an offer for The Picket was denied by Carroll Reid, As he was leaving Rodegap called attention to the fact that The Picket was in stable K, in which Spokane had a stall when he won the Derby of 1889. T. J. Gallagher. Lucien Appleby Beaten. LUCIEN APPLEBY BEATEN. The steady downpour of rain up to one o'clock yesterday afternoon rendered the going at Washington Park sloppy, ' although there was bottom enough to get a good foothold. Even with this unfavorable condition the racing was good and was productive of some close and exciting finishes. The most important race of the day was the third, a dash of one and one-sixteenth miles for three-year-olds and upward. Lucien Appleby, on his known liking for the going, was made a 9 to 10 favorite, but ran a most disappointing race succumbing to Schwalbe, against whose chances as good as 7 to 1 could be had. To a good start Schwalbe at once shot to the front and displaying much speed throughout was never headed, winning in a drive by a neck from Lucien Appleby, which finished five lengths before Air-light for second place. Lucien Appleby closed up on Schwalbe when turning for home, but the latter outstayed him in a stirring last eighth struggle. Airlight tired fast when the pinch came and the same may be said of Hoodwink. Sylvia Talbot certainly is a high-class filly in a muddy track. She had no trouble whatever in annexing the purse of the fifth race, a six furlongs dash for three-year-olds and upward, to her owner's credit Off well in her stride, she assumed command at once and displaying keen speed throughout really made the field look cheap, winning by three and a half lengths from Skilful, which fin-Ished three before Fleuron for second place. (Continued on second page.) LUCIEN APPLEBY BEATEN. (Continued from first page.) Skilful, swung wide when turning for home, jlosing some ground. Fleuron easily outstayed John Peters in the last eighth. The latter showed much early speed. The first race of the day, a half mile sprint for two-year-olds, resulted In an easy vic- ' tory for Touchstone. Off well in his stride, he assumed the lead at once and was never , headed, winning as his rider pleased by three and. a half lengths from Atlantico, which beat out Stumpy one and a half lengths for \ second place. Atlantico made up ground rapidly In- the final eighth and finished going fast. Stumpy tired palpably in/the closing strides'. v I The second race, a dash of one mile for three-year-olds and upward resulted in a close finish, Pirate and Lord Touchwood passing over the line on even terms, none but the judges being in a position to separate them. Pirate won by the shortest of margins, Lord Touchwood finishing one length before Barrica for second place. The last named led until entering the last sixteenth, where Pirate and Lord Touchwood closed up on her. It appeared for a moment as if Lord Touchwood, next to inside rail, would win, but Pirate finished resolutely and nipped him on the post. Barrica faltered just a shade in the closing strides. Pyrrho moved up after entering the last quarter, but fell away badly beaten when a sixteenth out. Flying Ship had little trouble in proving her superiority in the fourth race, a dash of one mile and seventy yards for three-year-olds. She fairly revelled in the going and led the field from start to finish, winning as her rider pleased by two and a half lengths from Epicure, which beat Lendin ten for second place. Epicure ran a good race considering the weights. Both Lendin and Hmarinen appeared unable to extend themselves freely in the going. The concluding race, a dash of once around the track, for three-year-olds and upward, proved to be an easy thing for Serge. Harry, with but 87 pounds up, showed the way to the homestretch, where he tired fast and fell away beaten giving place to Serge. The latter then came on under slight urging, but had the field well beaten in the final sixteenth, winning by a length and a half from Adelante, which finished two before Mr. Dingle for second place. Adelante made up ground fast in the lasti eighth. Mr. Dingle came with a rush at the end, nipping Harry on the post for third place. The crowd was the largest ever seen, following a Derby attendance, and this despite the unfavorable track and weather conditions. Should no rain fall today the track will dry fast, but still be slow. Pulsus broke in his stride and, instantly taking the lead, he showed the way unextended throughout and in the run through the stretch could not be restrained back to his field. _ His race was high class and he is evidently all that is claimed for him. James? V. was always the runner up and finished an easy second. Possession, invariably a slow begin- • ner, clewed a tremendous gap. Falernian and Bass showed improved form in the race and they may be forthcoming in their class. Pol Roger, a grand looker and highly tried, was a prominent contender a furlong from the finish and held on gamely in the final drive. ;' Shafer finished close up and is worth remembering. Dutiful stripped light and was gaunt i and drawn today. Modred was repeatedly interfered with. Raglan was practically left, is a beautiful filly and will give a good account of herself. Water Boy approaches high class as a four-year-old. In going decidedly against him, he found little difficulty in going to the front in the first furlong and was cantering hard held for the remainder of the journey. Fire Eater was particularly favored by the cuppy track, but succumbed after racing with the winner for the first quarter and tired so badly that he had all he could do to save second money. Hamburg Belle was leading by a wide margin throughout, but always appeared to be doing her best and was certainly all out at the end and tiring. Tepee ran a game race, trailing the leaders for three furlongs. She closed up very fast in the stretch and finally outstayed Ocean Tide after a long, driving finish. The latter is of the improving kind and may develop into one of the best of her sex and year, held on wonderfully game at the end after an early drive to outrun the winner and her race at the weight was a fine one. Dusky got away badly and ran green almost throughout and finished very fast and had something in reserve. She is a fast filly and will improve. Van Ness is nearly a high-class sprinter and his form this season is far above his showing in any previous year. He acts like he was up to any distance, assumed command at the start and, after 'racing into a winning lead on the turn, he finished easily, pulling up. Rostand steadily improved his position and at the end, after following the winner closerV -for the first three furlongs, finished out the race gamely. Morokanta was going well in the last furlong. Bonnibert, hard held, was patiently rated close in behind th'e early leaders and when called on flashed into the lead on the stretch turn, coming away with plenty in reserve. Bon Mot, practically left, went after his field and gradually improved his position, saving ground throughout and finished out the last quarter fast, ran a remarkable race and would probably have won wfth an equable start. He is in great form, but an incorrigible bad actor at the post. Andy Williams, in the preliminary, stumbled and threw his exercise boy and galloped once and a half around the track before being caught. It may have taken something out of him. In the race he figured prominently throughout and put up his usual game fight at the end. Surmise closed up well at the end after having dropped out of it on the turn. Himself failed to stay. Tribes Hill is a good and consistent horse and stuck to the winner closely from start to finish but, running on the outside, went wide on the turns and practically finished out the race on his own courage. Carbuncle trailed far in the rear, being palpably outrun or-sulking, but when beginning the last quarter he moved up with surprising suddenness. Arnold, the reputed head of the cooperative style of bookmaking, which went to smash last winter, and who recently^ surrendered to the police authorities of St. Louis and is at present under bonds, was a visitor at the track yesterday. His presence there was communicated to the club officials and they informed him he must leave the track and must not in future attempt to enter the grounds. J. Baker arrived yesterday from Detroit with F. A. Bullock, J. W. Rodes and six two-year-olds.' J. W. Gates backed Caviar in the fifth race and was responsible for the odds being cut down from 10 to 1 to 5 to 1. J. B. Respess, when questioned yesterday concerning the report that Bernays was a very sick horse, stated that the horse was practically as well as ever, with the exception of a light fever, the result of a chill which the horse had while being cooled out after his race in the Derby. Mr. Respess remarked in conclusion that Bernays would be as well as ever in a day or two. Ex-jockey F. Leigh, who was suspended by Judge Murphy at Detroit, pending further investigation into the Sarah Black ringing case, was at the track yesterday and received a telegram during the afternoon from Judge Murphy to the effect that he must return at once to Detroit for the purpose of clearing himself of complicity in the case. Jockey -L. Wilson, who rode Pirate, Schwalbe and Sylvia Talbot to victory yesterday, has only been riding since last December, and since his debut in the saddle with colors on, has piloted, including yesterday's mounts, seventy winners. He first began attracting notice towards the close of the meeting at San Francisco, where he had ridden sixteen winners. At St. Louis, since the beginning of the racing, he has won forty-four races and was considered the best lightweight riding there. He has ridden Sylvia Talbot twelve times, of which nine times she was returned a winner. The announcement that Claude had won the Frontier Stakes at Detroit by fifteen lengths caused considerable discussion in the paddock among the horsemen. Some contended that had the track been soft last Saturday, Claude would have won the Derby easily. Others; were of the opinion that with | 1 better racing luck he would have won. All were unanimous in their belief that Claude is one of the grandest specimens of "wear and tear" racers ever seen, not even barring "Pa" Bradley's Traverser, which was continually shipped around the country to fill engagements.
