IX. 3sTO. 150. CHICAGO, WEDNESDAY, JTOE 24, 1903. PRICE 5 CENTS Hot Springs Track Plans. HOT SPRINGS TRACK PLANS! "William McGuigan, of Hot Springs, Ark., arrived yesterday and went to "Washington Park where he sought Ed Corrigan in the paddock. "When Corrigan was informed that the visitor was looking for him he dryly, asked: "Has he the umbrella?" and added: "I want no ringers." The Arkansas statesman, and erstwhile turfman, had no trouble in establishing his identity, for he carried the same wet weather shield that he had when he sent Bannockburn to the post to win the Sheridan Stakes, July 4, 1898. He was welcomed after promising to be good while he remained and to visit Hawthorne last night. He took time to make a few remarks about the projected racing plant at Hot Springs. "Next winter," said he, "there will be racing at the greatest watering place in the world, a place that promises to be the leading resort of health seekers on any continent. The water down there is good for horses as well as men. Tou can't beat it. I sold the land to the representatives of the club. It consisted of eighty-five acres and work was begun on the ground with a view to having everything ready by December and to begin racing Christmas day. My idea is that it would be better to wait until about the middle of January, but I have no voice in the matter and can only suggest what I think best. "The plans embrace a mile course, with lines somewhat similar to the "Washington Park track, a chute of something over a quarter of a mile in length, which will enter the backstretch and give a chance to run races of seven furlongs or a mile, with only one turn; and a chute into the homestretch that will give an almost straight half mile for two-year-olds. The stabling will be first class, the grandstand will be of ample size arranged and located with special care for the comfort of occupants and a good view of the tracks, and the paddock and betting ring will be constructed on the most improved lines. Now that's all that can be said at present. "When racing begins come and see us." Bad For Phil. BAD FOR PHIL. New York, June 23.— George E. Smith's (Pittsburg Phil) entries were ordered to be refused in the future. It means a practical ruling off. This was announced officially after the last race today. The stewards have been in session for several days and this action was the result of their conference. Advantage's Lakeside. I ADVANTAGE'S LAKESIDE. I Yesterday's races at "Washington Parkwere \ run over a course that was neither wet nor \ dry. It was slow and somewhat holding in spots. Coming into the homestretch, riders who were in a position to make a choice of going invariably pulled out toward the middle of the track. feature of the card was the Lakeside Stakes, five furlongs, for two-year-old fillies. A field of ten faced the starter. •Thomas C. McDowell's Advantage, carrying 118 pounds, which included a penalty of three pounds, was the favorite, with Hayes & Jackson's Anne Davis a well supported second [The choice. John A. Drake's Miss Veracity ■was an added starter. The race resulted in .a 'head and head finish between four, the ;favorite being placed first, Glisten second And Memories third, with Miss Veracity a few, inches farther back and closing up strongly. Before the race T. P. Hayes ad vised Tom McDowell not to be too confident because he was about to start what he considered a Ally about as fast as any he had ever seen run. Anne Davis was away well and was contesting the lead for about three furlongs. Then she began to weaken. At the end she was last. Advantage showed the way into the stretch, but was challenged by Memories before fairly straightened out, while Glisten became a close third. Memories moved up to the favorite with a spurt that promised to secure the stakes. But she never gained the lead. Advantage would not yield and in a desperate struggle got home first. Glisten gained gradually in the last sixteenth and headed out Memories. Miss Veracity was green and did not stride well until late in the race. But she came by the stand like a filly of superior class. The history of the Lakeside Stakes is contained in the following table. Year. Horse. Wt. Star'rs. The public, however, selected Gregor K. as the best at the weights and the outcome proved the choice was correct. He led at every point and won without having been fully extended. Entering the last quarter Bondage was a close second, with "Waswift and Linguist in close attendance. In the run home Henry sat still on the favorite and the other riders worked hard. At the head of the stretch the field was well bunched, with the exception of Glassfull, which was a straggler. Lord Touchwood, a strong second choice, I won the opening selling race of a mile and seventy yards. He did not get off well, but little Robbins took chances, as he did Monday, when he was shut off and' pocketed trying to get up on the inside, and managed to escape interference. Little Duchess H. cut out the work and led for three-quarters. Swinging into the stretch rather wide, she left an opening, through which Lord Touchwood flashed and the race was over. John A. Drake's Amur, a false favorite, performed in an ordinary manner. S. S. Brown's Proceeds defeated Peter Paul by a nose in a five furlong scramble for two-year-olds. Peter Paul was quick to assume a commanding lead and looked all over a winner when Proceeds worked into second position half way around the turn. Beginning the stretch run, Proceeds drew up to Peter Paul's heels, only to find that Domi-nick had the Bradley gelding in hand. When let down Peter Paul resumed a lead of two open lengths and Helgesen had to begin urging Proceeds. The latter demonstrated that he was fit and game by sticking to his work with the result that he caught and beat Peter Paul on the post. Town Moor, third, was far back. Stuyve won the fifth race, at three-quarters of a mile. He liad to be hustled to overtake Evening Star and Americano and did not do so until he had gone more than a half mile. After getting into the stretch (Continued on second page.) . ADVANTAGE'S LAKESIDE. (Continued from first page.) he was ridden vigorously for a while and then went to the front and galloped In an easy winner. Four horses wehe well backed to win the sixth event. They were Warte Nicht, Or-sina. Lord Melbourne and Modicum. The latter was the best backed and his owner is reported 'to have taken a large amount out of the ring. "Warte Nicht and Orsina contested the lead until about three-sixteenths from the finish, where Modicum caught and passed them, eventually winning by five lengths. A veterinary examined The Picket yesterday morning and pronounced the swelling on the colt's left fore pastern as of only slight consequence. He said it would be gone in a few days and the injury which caused it would have no permanent effect. Carroll Reid says there is absolutely no truth in the reports that anybody is negotiating for the purchase of the winner of the Derby and, furthermore, that no price on the colt has been named to anybody. When Sam Hildreth was asked if he was trying to buy the horse for E. E. Smathers he replied: "I'd like to have him, but nobody has authorized me to negotiate for him. He's a good colt, worth having." These remarks aroused the Hon*. William McGuigan, who stood at Hildreth's side, causing him to gesticulate gracefully with his umbrella and say: "You bet, he's a good colt. I went over to the stable to see him and I know a good colt when I see one." General regret was expressed everywhere about the grounds when information that Johnny Reiff would have to undergo an operation on his skull. The popular little rider is conscious and clear-minded, but there is thought to be a gathering under his skull opposite the place where his head struck the ground. Ed Corrigan is satisfied with the boy's condition. Enoch Wishard is not. T. J. Gallagher. Coney Island Form Chart. CONEY ISLAND FORM CHART. SHEEPSHEAD BAY, L. I., June 23, 1903.— Fifth day. Wilson's services, paying the reported price of $10,-000 for the same. The jockey can ride at 67 pounds and is only a little over sixteen years old. Consequently Mr. Hildreth will have more than four years' service from the youngster. In addition to the price paid for the contract, it is reported the rider will receive $100 monthly and the regulation retainer for the mounts. C. E. Mahone purchased yesterday from P. Dunne Poor Boy at private terms. B. Schreiber disposed of the two-year-old Gus Heidorn to G. W. Poole-yesterday. Jockey J. Boland arrived yesterday from i St. Louis and will do the heavy weight riding for B. Schreiber during the current meeting. C. B. Reid, the trainer of The Picket, although assured by a veterinary who examined the horse minutely yesterday, that nothing serious is ailing him, announced that he would not start The Picket in the Sheridan Stakes, fearing, as he said, to take a chance of completely ruining the Derby winner. J. A. Drake's added starter, Miss Veracity, in the Lakeside Stakes, although acting decidedly green at the barrier and, during the running, finished with great determination, coming from far in the rear through the stretch run, and at the end it was only a matter of inches between the first four, with Miss Veracity going the strongest, and she left the Impression that had the race been a little further, the Drake colors would have been in the van. C. R. Ellison's three-year-old Judge Himes is not as seriously hurt as had been reported; The horse is still a bit sore as a result of his race in the Derby, but the ailment is slight and manifests itself only whenever the horse is given a bruising race over a hard track.
