CHICAGO, FRIDAY, JULY 10, 1903. PRICE 5 CENTS The Conqueror II. In Form. THE CONQUEROR II. IN FORM. The usual excellent sport was given to patrons of "Washington Park yesterday afternoon. The intermittent showers of the night before had little effect upon the track, which was almost at its best and fast time was registered in the different races. The feature event of the afternoon was the Midway Stakes, a dash of one and one-eighth miles for three-year-olds and upward, with $2,000 added. Speculation on this race was spirited, Hargis and John McGurk dividing first choice honors, being held at 8 to 5, but heavy backing of the former caused the latter's price to recede to 21 to 1 at post time. The race resulted in a big surprise, The Conqueror n., against whose chances as good as 25 to 1 could be had, proving an easy winner. To a good start, Schwalbe at once assumed command, and passing the stand the first time was a neck before Hargis, with Vincennes a close third and John McGurk last. Down the backstretch Schwalbe still retained a fair lead with little change in the others* positions with the exception that The Conqueror II. had displaced Vincennes Jn third position. Turning for home j Schwalbe began to falter and Hargis had little trouble in passing into the lead. The latter appeared the winner when a furlong out, but here The Conqueror II. moved up on even terms with him and after a little shaking up won easily by one and a half lengths, Hargis finishing a half before Gold Bell for second place. Hargis tired fast in the final sixteenth when challenged by the winner. Gold Bell closed up ground fast in the final quarter and finished resolutely. Schwalbe finished a fair fourth, but was well beaten when turning for home. John Mc-Gurk's race was a sore disappointment to his many backers. He moved up into a contending position just before entering the stretch, but unaccountably tired fast when the pinch came, finishing absolutely last. He can do much better and the race should be thrown out in future caculations. The time, 1:53, was only fair. The stake was worth $2,555 to the winner. The day's opening race, a dash of one mile for three-year-olds and upward, brought aj rather poor field of thirteen to the barrier. Mary Glenn was made an even money choice and certainly won as the odds indicated she should. Off well in her stride, she tiptoed the field all the way, winning in a big canter by five lengths from Mezzo, which beat Bard of Avon the same distance for second place. Mezzo began slowly, but made up ground rapidly in the last quarter and was much the best of the others. The second race, a spin of six furlongs for three-year-olds, resulted in a big surprise, The Crisis, a rank outsider in the betting, winning in hollow fasbion. Sidney C. Love was thought to be the best, being made an 8 to 5 favorite, but ran a poor race, finishing outside the first three. The Crisis, favored with a running start, at once shot to the front and displaying much speed throughout was never headed, winning in a big canter by three and a half lengths from Bardolph, which finished a half before Birch Broom for second place. Birch Broom was pocketed badly in the first half, but moved up fast when she got clear sailing in the last quarter and finished resolutely. Sidney C. Love was never a. serious contender. J. Sidney "Walker showed early speed. Bragg is certainly one of the most consistent of the horses that have run at "Washington Park this year. He was entered Vi / j against a pretty fair field in the fourth race, a mile handicap for three-year-olds and upward, but proved equal to the occasion and was a handy winner at the end. First Epicure and then Jack Rattlin led, the latter turning into the stretch a half length before the former with Bragg third. Jack Rattlin was the first to falter and for a moment Epicure appeared toNhave a good chance to win, but in the lasu hundred yards Bragg got to him and outstayed him to the wire, winning by a half length, Epicure finishing the same distance before Jack Rattlin for second place. Huzzah showed in improved form, finishing going fast and is worthy of serious consideration hereafter. Monsieur Beaucaire showed a fair race and is due to win a bracket soon if .placed with judgment. Of an unwieldy field of two-year-olds that went to the post in the fifth race, a five furlongs scramble, Nannie Hodge, held at 35 -to 1 in the betting, was easily the best. She ran My Jane into submission by the time the head of the stretch had been reached and then easily came away, winning by two and a half lengths. My Jane beat Handsome Florry one length for second place.. The latter finished going fast. Saito and Sweetie had no chance after the barrier went up, owing to the start, which was bad. The last race of the day, a mile dash for three-year-olds and upward, was marred by Silk Cord, the favorite, bucking when the barrier went up and refusing to run. Moabina, heavily backed, led, after the first quarter had been run, to the head of the stretch, where Father "Wentker moved up and easily wore her down in the final eighth, winning by one length from Evelyn Byrd, which finished the same distance before Kunja for second place. Agnes Brennan got away in her stride and was leading well in hand until right at the end, where she ran out and was only straightened out in time to get home. Mohave made up ground quickly from an indifferent start, rushing through on the inside and closing up strongly was wearing the winner down fast in the last sixteenth. Short Cake took to the extreme outside after having been crowded at the start and was rapidly making up ground in the last three furlongs and ran a cracking good race. Honey Bee was pocketed early, but showed pronounced quitting proclivities. Sailor Knot can do better. Kingcrane tired after following the winner's pace closely for three furlongs. Counterpoise has trained remarkably well from his promising two-year-old form and practically forced the pace throughout. Although apparently outrun on the far turn by Shot Gun he quickly drew up on even terms and outstayed him in a long and desperate struggle in the stretch. Shot Gun may have been short. He was undoubtedly unlucky to lose, was backing away from the barrier when it was raised, ran lapped on the winner under a choking pull to the half, where he took a slight lead which he held to the stretch, still fighting for his head, where he began to tire unexpectedly. Rosetint is still a very bad actor at the post and got away none too well, under a drive early to get up she tired at the end and was lucky to save third place. Tam o'Shanter closed a big gap from a bad start and when gaining fast failed to get through on the inside in the stretch and was compelled to •pull up and come on the outside. Gravina ran in improved form. Adios held on well when the pace was phenomenally fast. Scratched— 40183 St. Daniel, 106; 40183 John A. Jim Kelly suddenly made play for the lead on the inside, which profited him considerably, as the others were inclined to waiting tactics. When turning for home he easily-shook off Pentaur's challenge, but was driving to the limit to stand off Jocund at the end and ran a fast and game race. Jocund got away badly and had to be sent along from the start, but one of the rear ones getting continually in his way, he failed in his efforts to get through on the inside and came around and finished with an electrical rush, but failed to get up. Pentaur had no mishaps, but was not good enough and failed to stay in the final stretch run. Monadnock is a rater and finished at the same steady clip he maintained throughout. NInepin ran prominently to the stretch. Jim Kelly, show, 2 to 5. Jocund, show, 1 to 4. Pentaur, show, 1 to 4. _^ /I AO /I FOURTH RACE— 1 1-8 Miles. 3-year-olds. Allowances. Winner— Br. c, by St. Leonards— Hampton Belle (trained by J. Rowe). Went to post at 4:55. At post 2 minutes. Start straggling. Worf easily; second driving. . Cardinal Wolsey was easily the best, got away well and after indulging the leaders up the i backstretch went to the front in a stride or two when given his head and finished out an l easy winner. Williamstead was a close up contender throughout on his own courage and I outstayed the favorite after a long stretch drive. Irascible is a slow beginner and Redfern l plied the whip industriously throughout, not escaping considerable interference. The colt t gave it up unexpectedly in the closing drive and is eveidently overrated. Polite closed a i big gap from a bad start. Aminte went well and is a consistent performer for what he i can dof Spring Silk again found the distance too short and the big field militated seriously r against his chanoes. Drake and Enoch Wishard returned yesterday from New York, where they had been to see the running of Savable in the Realization Stakes. Savable and High Chancellor were left in the east. H. T. Griffin has sold to H. Gardner & Co. at private terms the three-year-old colt Jove, by Logic— The Slashes. Barney Schreiber recently sent to Saratoga, to be rested there until the opening of the races, the horses Geheimniss, Lacy Crawford, Crimean, and nine highly tried two-year-olds. The horses are in charge of H. Brandt. Silk Cord, which was favorite in the closing race, after breaking away from the post with the rest of the field, propped after going twenty yards and refused to run. Bragg continues to show marked improvement with each race, and when at his best with light weight up is a strong factor in any company. Immediately after the running of the last race constables served warrants on bookmakers O'Leary, Weller, Cartwright, Yaeger, Summerfield, Pesch and Redon, charging them with gambling. The bookmakers were taken to Justice Woods' court, where bonds of *$200 were arranged for them by Attorney Rogan, and they were immediately released. The constables arrived at the grounds during the afternoon, but made no attempt to molest the men until after the races, very few persons being aware that the bookmakers had been placed under arrest. John McGurk's performance in the Midway Stakes was a great disappointment to his owner, P. Dunne. T. C. McDowell, recently sent to his farm near Lexington, Ky., the horses Bourbon, Oneida, Pleasant Girl, Batton and Marvin, where they will be turned out until fall-. Middleton & Jungbluth's horses, including The Picket and Santon, will be shipped to Saratoga the latter part of the current meeting. Notes Of The Turf. NOTES OF THE TURF. A., Cincinnati. Do not use Indianapolis races. Mincowsky, Cincinnati, • O. Betting as quoted was correct. C. E. B., Chicago. Time at Chicago and Detroit is the same. F. G. B. The parlay was void as to Gold Bell and won on Santon place. Inquirer. A bet made on one horse of an entry, in a handbook, is decided by the running of that horse alone. Argonaut, Toronto, Ont. The rejuvenated I Bennings track will have an advanced rat ing in the Manual of next year. It is now fully 875. Se far this year Africander has won $59,055. Being sound and heavily engaged, he appears destined to a prominent place In the list of great winners. Phil. M., Cincinnati. The prices on Savable and Allan-a-Dale were correctly given. Subscriber, Chicago. Jim Clark was 7 to 10 to show, July 6. J. Miller, Chicago. If the bet on Mrs. Frank Foster was at closing odds or average odds, or was to be paid at ticker quotations, it is a draw. If it was at highest quotations it was a loser. F. R. Henry, HI. There is no such book that we know of. Handicappers work on various systems and devise their own books of figures and comparison, based on the daily running of the horses. C. W., Chicago. You are entitled to your money back on Gold Bell. Your bet at the time it was made was plainly on the second race and as the horse was scratched there is no question that the bet was a draw. So far western two-year-olds are disappointing. A number are speedy and weight-carrying performers, but none stands out as being of surpassing excellence. Perhaps the Hyde Park Stakes may introduce a real star. Racing Dates Of 1903. RACING DATES OF 1903. Washington P. (Chicago)...
