"NO. 25S. CHICAGO, WEDNESDAY, OCTOBER 28, 1903. PRTCft 5 CENTS Our Bessie Again OUR BESSIE AGAIN. The racing at Worth yesterday was characterized by the downfall of favorites, but one, Tokalon, being able to finish first. Surprises bobbed up frequently during the day and the public fared badly in its battle with the bookmakers. The most important race of the day was the fourth, a dash of one and one-eighth miles, for all ages. Bondage was made a 13 to 10 favorite on account of his good showing with Luralighter last Saturday, but second was the best he could do, being compelled to bow in submission to Our Bessie, well ridden by Ferrell. Contrary to expectations the latter went to the the front at flag fall and apart from being headed by Nitrate for a short space, when running down the backstretch, remained in front all the way, winning by a neck in a drive from Bondage, which beat Cursus six lengths for second place. Bondage was slow in leaving the post and was far out of the contest in the first six furlongs, but just after passing the far turn he moved -crp-rapidly getting close to the winner in the last hundred yards. He responded gamely under punishment, but the winner was just a little too good for him. Cursus had little trouble in outstaying Dr. Stephens in the last eighth struggle for third place. The latter ran well for a mile and then tired palpably. Nitrate was thoroughly done for when turning for home. The first race, a dash of five furlongs, for two-year-olds, went to Clifton Forge, well backed by a "wise few," and held as second chpice in the betting. He assumed the lead as soon as the barrier went up and was never headed thereafter, winning in a drive by a neck from Don Domo, which finished five lengths before Prince Silverwings for second place. Don Domo finished resolutely under vigorous urging but could not quite get up. He was probably a little short and the race should do him good. Prince Silverwings easily outstayed J. P. Mayberry in the last eighth struggle for third place. "Wainamoinen, backed from 12 to 8 to J., easily took the second race, a dash of one mile, for four-year-olds and over. "Whiskey King, showing much speed, led for the first five furlongs, where "Wainamoinen passed him easily and was never afterward headed, winning by two lengths from Charley Thompson, which finished two before Potheen for second place. Charley Thompson finished resolutely and was much the best of the others. Potheen made up ground fast on the far turn, but tired perceptibly in the l:ist sixteenth. Ethylene ran a dull race, falling away badly beaten when turning for home. She can do better and the race should be thrown out of future calculations. "With Henry McDaniel scratched in the third race, a dash of six furlongs, for three-year-olds and over, Ocean Dream was thought to be much the best and was made an even money favorite, but second was the best she could do, the winner turning up in Mary McCafferty, against whose chances as good as 7 to 1 could be had. Never Fret, asr was to be expected, led for the first five ifurlongs and then tired, giving way to Mary McCafferty, which finished going fast next to the inside rail and beat out Ocean Dream a head, the latter beating Never Fret the same distance for second place. Ocean Dream broke flatfooted and appeared to have little chance in the first quarter, but moved up rapidly in the last half and would have been returned the winner in a few more strides. Zibia ran in improved form and bears watching hereafter. Tokalon had things all her own way in the fifth race, a five and a half furlongs sprint, for two-year-old fillies. She was held at 2 to 5 in the betting and won as the odds indicated she should. She led from start to finish, winning in a canter by four lengths from My Gem, which beat Aggie Lewis a head for second place. "Witchcraft ran a poor fourth. She showed scant speed throughout and was never a serious contender. The last race, a dash of one mile, for four-year-olds and over, proved to be an easy thing for Jim Hale, well ridden by Ferrell. Trentham led for five furlongs and then Dutch Carter took the lead, but when a furlong out he was easily passed by Jim Hale, which won as his rider pleased by three and a half lengths. The struggle for second place was sharp in the last sixteenth between Mary Moore and Frangible, the former outstaying the latter and passing over the line a neck in the lead. Good Ones for Sale GOOD ONES FOR SALE. Dr. A. C. Bernays, of St. Louis, has decided to send his racing string under the auctioneer's hammer at the St. Louis Fair Grounds next Saturday, and a number of horses well worth the attention of owners now in Chicago will be disposed of. Five beautifully bred yearlings, of which Dr. Bernays expects great things next year, are in the band to te sold. One, the imported filly by Hilare Zona, went a quarter on the Fair Grounds track in 24 seconds at her first speed essay. The breeding of these youngsters is set out in the advertising department of this issue, and they are strongly commended to owners who desire to strengthen their stables for next year. Local Turf Gossip LOCAL TURF GOSSIP. Jockey Mclntyre, who rode Bondage in the fourth race, told Starter Dwyer after the finish, when questioned by the latter as to why he did not break with his field, that he had done so but the horse, after taking a few strides, began stopping and seemingly did not want to run. Bondage has in his last three starts been off badly and this has been chiefly his own fault on account of his unwillingness to leave the post. Dr. Stephens was also away badly and his rider H. Phillips claimed that the horse would not break. Both horses will in future be barred from starting at Worth until properly schooled to the barrier. Jockey W. Robbins, who was recently released by J. Arthur, will ride for J. J. Mc-, Cafferty for the remainder of the current meeting. F. Cook's horses will be shipped after the meeting closes at Worth to Latonia, where they will be raced until the close there and then be shipped to Louisville, Ky., where they will be wintered. W. D. Twyman will ship his recent purchases, Ocean Dream, Beneficent and Moor, to Latonia next Thursday. C. R. Ellison's horses will be shipped next Friday to Latonia. Jockey Ferrell rode three winners, one sec-and and had one mount unplaced yesterday. Ethylene ran a poor race yesterday and can do much better when in good form. On the other hand Wainamoinen displayed decided improvement, went to the front when called on and won eased up. (Continued on second page.) LOCAL TURF GOSSIP. (Continued from first page.) W. D. Twyman who recently purchased Mary McCafferty from S. C. Hildreth and then lost her to J. J. McCafferty in a selling race, had to taste a little more of the bitter that is found in racing. Shortly after McCafferty took the filly from him, Twyman purchased Ocean Dream. Yesterday Twyman is reported to have backed his new purchase for several thousand dollars and had to see Mary McCafferty beat her out by a short head. Jim Hale, after a number of attempts, finally managed to make good. His performance, however, was nothing sensational. Aqueduct Form Chart AQUEDUCT FORM CHART. AQUEDUCT, L. King Pepper, skillfully and unexpectedly reserved today in the early running, steadily wore the leaders down in the long stretch run, closing up with a rush in the last few strides and winning right on the post. Alpaca, in great form, forced the pace throughout and was only beaten out in the last stride after having run everything but the winner into submission. Van Ness requires a stronger jockey and little Fisher could hardly do him justice in the closing drive. He got away well and followed the early pace closely, being interfered with in the last furlong. Princess Tulane closed up ground steadily after getting away poorly and at the end was going faster than anything in the race. Mary Street, pulling up at the start and having a rough journey, closed a tremendous gap Biserta made up a lot of ground in the stretch and evidently likes this track. Gravina trailed her field in the early running and made good with a brilliant stretch run. Sweet Alice, after getting away running, was quickly taken up and reserved for the long stretch sprint, in which she showed to advantage, finishing very fast and was wearing the winner down at the end. Ella Snyder fell away5 badly right at the end after forcing the pace for nearly six furlongs, but was pinned in next to the rail in the closing drive and interfered with, after which she sulked. Miladi Love was a prominent contender almost throughout and held on well to the finish. St. Sever closed up considerable ground in the straight run and showed sudden improvement. Blue Victor was poorly ridden and swerving all over the course near the finish. Silver Dream is evidently a good filly, led throughout under restraint, Fuller riding her a confident looking race and came away quickly when challenged at the end by M. Theo. The latter ran a fast and game race, moving with a fine rush in the closing strides. Komombo was a sharp and prominent contender throughout and finished a game third. Ancestor turned for home wide and although inadequately handled finished like a cyclone. Dusky finished a close and fast going fifth. Dimple got away badly arid was compelled to come on the extreme outside, but finished going fast. Algonquin closed up at the end like a whirlwind and ran a great race. Stolen Moments went right up to Rostand in the early running and outstayed him after a long and terrific struggle through the stretch and was caught napping and unprepared for the winner in the closing strides. Rostand evidently is not partial to weight, as he tired and swerved out in the last sixteenth. He was at a great disadvantage in making the running, however, and his race was really a good one. Belle of Portland only gave way in the last half dozen strides after having run lapped on the leader from the start. Alforten, swerving all over the course, landed a close fourth. Tribes Hill was sent out to make the running early and that beat him, as the going appears to be difficult and excessively tiring at the end. Sabot is a superior class filly and a rare stayer on today's performance, got away badly and was rushed up on the inside in the first quarter and then shut off on the far turn, closing up very fast at the end and would have been second with a stronger finish. Brighton Beach Statistics BRIGHTON BEACH STATISTICS. The latter closed a big gap but tired when the final drive came. Flaneur ran poorly. Chanterelle was used up in setting the earlv pace. Scratched (41295)Menace. 110; (42412)Leenja, 106. Lida Leib ran a good race and outgamed Allista when it came to the deciding drive. The latter was much used in chasing the pacemaker in the first half and tired. Moulin Rouge showed early speed and set a fast pace, but quit when the pinch came. Silk Maid was outrun all the way and was never a sharp contender. Lyrist was as good as left. Redan showed the most early speed and set a fast pace, but his weight told on him when the final drive came. Commodore hung on gamely through the last furlong and just managed to last long enough to stall off Marshal Ney. The latter, as usual, began slowly, but closed a big gap and finished fast.
