IX. NO. 259. CHICAGO, THURSDAY, OCTOBER 29, 1903. PRIOE 5 CENTS Sidney C. Love's Fast Race SIDNEY C. LOVE'S FAST RACE. Worth is certainly having- a run of good weather in the closing week of its fall meeting, and the crowds continue to be flatteringly large. Although there was not a special feature race on the card yesterday, the six races offered were well balanced throughout and patrons witnessed the best racing of the week thus far. The most important race of the day was the fourth, a free handicap purse of $600, for two-year-olds, at six furlongs. The race was robbed of much of its interest by the withdrawal of Dick Bernard, but even at that a fair field of eight faced the barrier. "Wm. Wright was rightfully made a decided first choice and rewarded the confidence placed in him by his many backers, by winning easily. Aggie Lewis, displaying much speed, led until just before turning for home, where Wm. Wright, which had always been close to her, passed her easily and never left the result thereafter in doubt, winning as his rider pleased by two lengths from Palm Reader, which finished one and a half lengths in front of Aggie Lewis for second place. Palm Reader stood a stretch drive gamely and had little trouble in outstaying Aggie Lewis for second place. The latter tired palpably when the pinch came. The Hebrew showed some early speed. Wm. Wright is certainly a fast colt and should make a good three-year-old. Big Ben had things all his own way in the first race, a dash of seven furlongs, for three-year-olds. Off well in his stride, he at once dashed to the front and showing much speed throughout simply played with the field, winning easily by two lengths from Floral Wreath, which finished three and a half before Alfredo for second place. Floral Wreath finished going fast and was much the best of the others. Alfredo was pinched out of position when the barrier went up and appeared to be hopelessly beaten off when running down the backstretch, but made up ground rapidly in the last three furlongs and finished with a rush. Clausus and Calcutta ran well for five and a half furlongs. Pronta should have won the second race, a dash of one mile, for four-year-olds and over, but met with bad racing luck, third being the best she could do. The winner turned up in Bluemint, against whose chances as good as 6 to 1 could be had. Alfred C, showing speed, led for the first half, where he was displaced by James J. Corbett, the j latter holding the lead until well straightened out for the line, where Bluemint moved up fast and under urging beat him out a half length, James J. Corbett beating Pronta a head for second place. The last named was cut out of position when nearing the first turn and appeared to be hopelessly beaten off in the first half mile, but made up ground rapidly thereafter and finishing with a rush was fast wearing down the two that " finished in front of her. Atheola ran a good race for seven furlongs and then tired. Alfred C. was well beaten when entering the last quarter and has probably had too much of it lately. The mile and a quarter race, for three -year-olds and over, third on the card, proved to be an easy thing for Tancred, which showed some improvement over his last previous race. He indulged Sarah Maxim with the lead for the first five furlongs and then went to the front at call, simply spread-eagling the field thereafter, winning In a canter by six lengths from El Ghor, which beat Brief a neck for second place. El Ghor finished resolutely under a skillful ride. Brief came with a belated rush at the end. Hay-ward . Hunter ran in improved form and bears i watching hereafter. Sidney C. Love is a good little horse just ; now and is at his best. He took the fifth 1 race, a dash of one mile and seventy yards, for three-year-olds and upward, in an exciting ; last sixteenth struggle from Gregor K. The latter led by a good margin until turning for home, where Sideny C. Love gradually closed up on him and outstayed him in the last hundred yards, winning under urging by a head, Gregor K. finishing four lengths in front of Stuyve for second place. The race was strictly a three-horse affair throughout. The last race, a dash of six and a half furlongs, for three-year-olds and over, was taken by Ledus, well ridden by Ferrell. Do-dona led to the stretch, where Ferrell brought up Ledus from far back with a rush and had the field beaten when a hundred yards from the line, winning easily by two lengths from Goodman, which beat Zyra a head for second place. Local Turf Gossip LOCAL TURF GOSSIP. Mose Goldblatt was greatly dissatisfied with the ride put up by Adams on Brief in the third race, and had no hesitancy in informing the rider so in rather strong language after the finish. Later Goldblatt tried to have the judges substitute another rider on Rainland, but no available jockey could be thought of on such short notice, and he finally decided to let Adams ride, remarking at the same time that he could not ride the colt any worse than he did Brief. Later in the paddock another wordy discussion occurred between the owner and jockey, in which Adams said as he was leaving for the post on Rainland: "You can bet I'll ride this fellow all the way and whip him every foot of the route." True to his word, Adams drew his whip at the barrier's rise and never let up on the colt until in the last sixteenth, where he swerved slightly, and after straightening him out he began whipping again until the finish was reached. Goldblatt later complained to the judges with a request that they look into the matter. A special train consisting of thirteen Arms palace horse cars, two sleepers and two day coaches will leave Worth on Tuesday next for New Orleans. The owners that have made arrangements to ship their horses on the train are as follows. S. W. Streett, W. Hedges, J. F. Davis, J. Arthur, J. U. Strode, H. T. Griffin, S. S. Tracey, J. W. Dwyer, Moore & Strauss, L. Sire, E. Trotter, K. D. Orr, W. Walker, W. D. Bernhart, W. Burke, B. Butler, J. H. McDerment, L. Marion, R. M. Westerfield, T. Licalzi and J. Cochran. The majority of the jockeys who will go from here to New Orleans will leave on the train. Galathee was made the medium of a heavy plunge in the second race, and his odds of : 100 to 1 reduced to 15 at post time. The horse showed very little in the race to warrant the heavy backing. i Gregor K. ran in improved fashion and held on much longer than heretofore and forced Sidney C. Love, to which he was ! giving five pounds, to a hard drive to over- take him and barely beat him out. Boots & Hollenback have sold Sanetomo at private terms to Woodford & Everman. The Chicago Ridge Handicap, which is ' carded' for decision today, will afford race (Continued on fifth page.) LOCAL TURF GOSSIP. (Continued from first page.) goers a final glimpse of the best two-year-olds now racing on local tracks. The distance, one mile, should assure a fair test and give a good line on the stamina of some of the youngsters. Of those which will likely line up to the barrier Proceeds, carrying top weight, is the only one that has negotiated the distance successfully so far, but this by no means signifies that the, others cannot run well over a long distance of ground. Many horsemen are of the belief that English Lad is Proceed's equal over a mile route, and a number are of the opinion that Dick Bernard's great flight of speed should easily make him stick out a mile route. Wild Pirate, lightly weighted and favored by the soft gding and distance of ground, went out at the start to make the running and nothing really ever got near enough to him to menace his lead, practically coming home alone. Highlander, suddenly improved, due probably to the cuppy tooting, finished with a tremendous rush and saved second place right on the post. Ethics, the distance and long stretch being in his favor, ran his race and was second best, but tired right at the end after a long and trying effort to beat the winner and, moreover, was caught napping in the last fifty yards. Hoodwink was sent along after Wild Pirate in the early running and the effort told on her in the stretch run. The horses were placed by the judges: Oarsman, 1; Payne, 2; Bob Hilliard, 3. Stonewall liked the difficult going and, gradually moving up on the turn for home, finished with a great burst of speed, but boring into the rail, crowded the favorite and was disqualified. Oarsman, badly ridden, was taken up after beating the barrier and was repeatedly pocketed and interfered with and in the last fifty yards thrown against the fence, then pulling up, came around and just failed to get up and was much the best. Payne was waited with and made good with a fast stretch run, but was pinned in against the rail by Stonewall in the last fifty yards. Akela showed a lot of speed and after being prominent in the first stages held on well at the end, but bearing out, crowded Oarsman and was also disqualified. SCOTCH PLUME, BO to I, WON and ALL GOLD, 7 to 1, won, were the two magnificent good things with which I was enabled to open the Aqueduct meeting most gloriously. Where can you secure such information except from me? Unfortunately, Rostand at 6 to 5, after leading all the way, was barely beaten out Tuesday, but turfites must concede a loser sometimes. Day after day and week after week I have been putting these good things over and why not? Being a Foreman of a racing stable, and being up and doing at the break of dawn, watching the preoarations of the different stables, enables me to furnish you with these two good "things each day.
