NO. 264. CHICA&O, WEDNESDAY, OYEMBEB 4, 1903, PBIOB 5 GENTS Off for New Orleans ' - OFF FOR NEW ORLEANS. Horsemen from these parts, contemplating spending the winter mouths and deriving a livelihood by racing their horses at the Crescent City, were astir early yesterday morning superintending the loading of their horses on the special train at the "Worth track. A dozen Arms-Burton palace horse cars had been backed to the siding during the night and everything had apparently been put in readiness for an early start, but as is usual in cases of special horse trains, the actual departing time was nearly four hours later than the time scheduled. The usual excitement in evidence when a train of its kind leaves for New Orleans was in a measure lacking this year, this was chiefly on account of the absence of hangers-on about a racetrack, commonly known as "hustlers," who make an owner's life a burden at shipping time with petitions to be taken along. This year the Chicago season closed much sooner than formerly and consequently the wait for New Orleans' opening is much longer. The hustlers on that account found it much more to their interest to go to Latonia and put in a few weeks there, and then leave on the special which is billed to leave there. The owners -who shipped their horses yesterday are the same ones in nearly every case that have heretofore made the Crescent City their headquarters in the winter. J. Arthur, J. U. Strode, E. Trotter, K. D. Orr, J. F. Davis, S. W. Streett and one or two others have always had the good fortune to get their fair share of the ! purses there, and this year should prove no exception. A complete list of the horsemen and the horses that left on the train follows: Ed Trotter, owner and trainer Charley Thompson, Scorpio, Arnold K., J. W. O'Neill, Count 'Em Out, Hedge and Lingo. J. Latonia Gossip LATONIA GOSSIP. -In the steeplechase at Latonia Monday, Faraday, Jr., bolted at the third jump and scraped Monahan's leg so sharply that he pulled up and dismounted. At the last jump Triso fell, turned a complete somersault, rolled over on jockey G. Wilson, knocked out three of his teeth, cut his right eye and injured his hip. The horse was not hurt. He got up and galloped after the field, while the jockey was being carried off on the stretcher. Several owners got in with their stables at Latonia Monday morning. Some few came from St. Louis, but the majority of them shipped here from the Worth track at Chicago. Among them were Frank Arthur, with Eva's Darling, Boundary and a two-year-old; James Arthur, with the three-year-old mare Ma'mselle; C. K. Burdeau, with Hayward Hunter and Lou Woods; Mose Jacobson, with Premus and Addie Turnstall; Mose Goldblatt, with Jena, Brief, Rainland and Boaster; V. Hughes, with Tancred, Tro-cadero and two two-year-olds; S. E. Parmer, with Little Boy and Orderly; G. W. Scott & Co., with Tokalon, Apollonaris and Trom-peuse; J. W. Fuller, with Alamode, John E. Owens, Captan Ham'm, Enverite, Voila, Don't Ask Me, R. F. Williams, and Aurita; H. J. Perry & Co., with Coruscate, Mandamus and Tribes; C. S. Brownell, with Nestoria; W. D. Twyman, with Ocean Dream, Dungannon and Beneficent, and J. J. McCafferty, with Thane, Alfred C, Frank Rice, Lighthunt, Firing Line, Mary McCafferty and Eda Riley. Eight new books cut in at Latonia Monday, making twenty-two in the line, while two of the old ones went off. The new slates put up were those of Fred Cook, S. Everhardt, Sam Stephens, Dr. Rainey, Billy Huber, Fred Pesch and Frank Bain. Riley Grannan also cut in. Billy Coleman and J. K. Hughes went off. Rome Respess was, until a day or so ago, undecided as to how best to winter Dick Welles. At the Woodlawn Farm a new barn has been erected in the place of the one destroyed by fire last winter, and for a time he was figuring on chancing the great colt in this structure with the balance of the string, but he has now decided to erect a concrete barn of one stall and quarters for an attendant, who will be with the champion constantly during the frozen period. Merry England, best and a coming crackerjack, ran into the lead at the start and, forcing a terrific pace throughout, came away decisively from Buttons right at the end. Excepting the last named, he had everything behind him beaten after going the first quarter. Buttons stamped himself far above the ordinary and, after getting away none too well, displayed amazing speed in running up into a close second on the far turn. He went wide on the turn as in his preceding race, but got down to steady and superlative good work in the long drive home. Gay Boy was outrun and at no stage able to get up into serious contention, tiring badly at the end and was driving to save third place. River Pirate got away badly and trailed far in the rear to the stretch, where he made up a lot of ground. Master-man fell completely out of the race early, moving up like a cyclone in the stretch run. Northern Star quit after a brief display of speed and can do better. Merry England, show, 3 to 5. Akela quickly assumed command and led throughout, coming away gamely from the combined challenge of Gravina and Payne and is an improved colt. Gravina was shut off directly after the start by the winner and lost considerable ground. She held on, however, in a forward position to the stretch, where she came through in the middle and was completely hemmed in and pocketed in the next furlong, closing up fast when with clear sailing at the end and just getting up to save second place. Payne followed Akela closely throughout and but for swerving clear across the course under the whip in the last furlong would have been second. Nevermore finished very fast after having a rough journey in the early running. Rightful, suddenly improved, was shuffled back at the start and, making up a lot of ground in the stretch, finished a close up fifth. Nine Spot held on steadily throughout. Won easily; second handily; Wizard showed phenomenal improvement in spite of his advantage at the start, where he beat the barrier four lengths. He made the most of his advantage and led all the way and being partial to a long route, he managed to get home in front from the badly ridden and unlucky favorite. Dolly Spanker got away badly and was repeatedly crowded in the early, running and in the closing drive. He was also hemmed in and never got clear sailing until in the last sixteenth, where he drew out like a flash and finished running faster than the winner. Monet, an improved horse and skillfully handled, steadily improved his position from a bad sendoff and put up a fast and game finish. Wotan had no mishaps and simply failed to stay. Carbuncle trailed the field to the stretch, where he came through next to the inside rail and rapidly overhauled the leaders, passing them in the last fifty yards and winning a lucky race. Stamping Ground held a forward position on the inside in the early running and to get clear sailing had to pull up and come on the extreme outside in the stretch run, thereby losing a lot of ground, then closed up with a rare burst of spee'd, decisively outstaying the leaders and Higgins, overlooking the winner on the inside, was unlucky to lose. Lux Casta ran lapped on Rostand for a mile and a sixteenth and, bearing out all through the stretch, seriously interfered 'with Stolen Moments and Stamping Ground, but sustained her speed with unexpected pertinacity and is evidently as good as ever. Stolen Moments showed indications of staleness, tiring badly in the last sixteenth. Rostand forced the pace for a mile and then gave it up. Gaviota, nearly left, palpably sulked throughout. Dutiful displayed early speed and was quick to get into prominent contention, finished gamely on the outside and lasted long enough to save second place. Prince Salm Salm stayed unexpectedly well in the trying stretch drive and is a suddenly improved colt. Sonoma Belle, favored at the start and luckily placed throughout and with clear sailing on the outside, simply failed to make good, tired at the end and was under the whip for the last half.
