Prince Blazes, particularly favored by the stiff going, fell away In the early running, closing a big gap in the last half and, moving up fast in the stretch run, won going away. Handpress held a forward position throughout and ran a steady, game race in very much improved form. Flourish, away poorly, made a fast run- into the lead when straightened for home, tiring badlv in the closing drive. Mountebank was prominent to thestretch, where he lost ground by a wide turn and was going well at the end. He is worth remembering. Torila ran a fairly good race. Pat Morrissey steadily improved his position after getting away badly. Nullah was crowded back at the start and thereafter made up a lot of ground. Prince Blazes, show, 4 to 5. Erne moved up fast in the stretch run after a lucky early journey and won going away. Canejo ran 5n improved form, breaking flatfooted and running up into a contending position in a furlong, but swerved in to the inside deep going and tired at the end. Sherry liked the track and showed a lot of speed to the stretch, where he failed to stay. Yellowstone will probably reverse this running later. He is a fair class horse, showed early speed and then tired all over as if short. I. O. U. was closing up well in the last sixteenth. Step Around tired after going a good half and is very ordinary. Won in a canter; second easily. Cascine, away running on the outside and in good going, led hard held throughout and right at the end was pulled up, far outclassed his field and is better than ever, which means close to high class. Military Man was the only serious contender and held on in close attendance throughout, but on sufferance, ran a fast and game race and was much the best of the others. Libbie Candid is improving and outstayed F. E. Shaw for third place in a long stretch drive. The latter, a useful colt capable of better things, swerved all over the course at the end and was evidently short. Ebony, a very fine looker, but big and palpably unfit, will be heard from later and has shown amazing speed in trials. The Jew went a fast three furlongs. Scratched 42838 Ananias, 104. Veterano raced into close attendance on Meehanus on the backstretch and when the latter tired went into a long and winning lead and at the end came home alone. Greenock, close up throughout but in the worst part of the track, appeared beaten on the turn for home, but rallied and got up suddenly in the last half dozen strides for second place. Fossil, very badly ridden, turned for home on the extreme outside and swerved across the track into the fence, where he was pulled up. allowing Greenock to get up. He can do much better and is a good colt. Galanthus held on steadily throughout and, gaining at the end, would have been second in another sixteenth. Meehanus forced the pace for six furlongs and quit, evidently not keyed up for so long a journey. Burdock, badly messed about, ran a good race and liked the going. Ben Mac Dhui, probably best, was skillfully reserved close up in the early stages, running on the outside in good going and when called on on the far turn raced into a long lead in a half dozen strides and practically cantered the remainder of the journey. Warte Nicht was excessively urged in the worst going to pass the early pacemaker Diderot and on the far turn was knocked back four lengths when the winner cut directly across, was seriously fouled and never had a chance after that, but closed up a lot of ground in the stretch run, running a remarkable race. Modicum, lame at starting, trailed his field and then came along fast in the stretch, caught Diderot tiring and just got up for third place. The latter made the running for nearly six furlongs and put up a game race and was easily third best. Lacy Crawford retired after a brief display of speed. Ben Mac Dhui, show, out. The Hot Springs stakes, which closed Saturday, drew out the most remarkable entry ever received by a track in America. There are nearly 2,700 entries to thirteen stakes, making an average of over 200 to a stake. Free entrance was responsible for such colossal entry lists. At the same time it is significant testimony to the desire of "many owners to race at Hot Springs, a factor that must have proper consideration when the Western Jockey Club meets next month to parcel out dates for 1904. The Inaugural Handicap received the enormous number of 292 entries, the following being the nominations: Leopard, Found, Style, Miss "West, Ben Lear, Bandillo, Handzor, Atlas, Lookaway, Requisition, Dr. Clark, Nan Dora, Bxcentral, Cogswell, Carrietta. Keene are contemplating' vast improvements at Castleton Farm, which has lately passed into their possession in fee simple. The stabling is old and the fences rotten. It is their intention to build entirely new barns upon the order of some of Mr. Haggin's new ones at Elmendorf, and renew all the fencing with substantial plank and wire fencing. This place is probably the most ragged in Kentucky, the fields resemble wild prairies and the horses appear to thrive on the rugged grass growing up among the bushes and in the uncultivated fence corners. George H. Whitney promises to have a formidable lot of two-year-olds to begin the season of 1904, judging from the conformation and fashionable breeding of an even dozen youngsters he has in his care at his Sheepshead Bay stable. Most of them were brought from the Melrose Stud of Mr. Whitney, at Lexington, and are youngsters of his own breeding. His stallion Farandole is the sire of six of the lot, and they all show many of the characteristics of the big chestnut son of Enquirer and Waltz. All of his get shown in the lot are of a rich chestnut color, and have a size and substance that should warrant their coming to hand particularly useful racing tools. Ten of the string are the property of Mr. Whitney, while a Salvator colt, and another by Ben Holladay are in his care and will be developed by him for other interests. John E. Madden has become so much impressed with Bennings that he plans to begin the season there next year. He has already engaged thirty stalls, to be ready for occupancy by March 1. Mr. Madden has ideas of his own as to the proper construction and equipment of stables, and expects to go to Washington soon after the first of the year and have the stables set aside for him and fixed up according to these ideas. The Madden horses have not cut much of a figure at Bennings so far. Golden Drop has been the only winner. Washington Form WASHINGTON FORM.
