He is a speedy colt and forced a fast pace all of the way, from which he tired and he was doing his best at the end to stall off Silver Dream. The latter ran a good race and would have beaten the winner in a few more strides. Sais saved ground on the stretch turn and finished with a rush. Trocadero was "taken back while gcing down the backstretch and came with a rush in the final furlong and won going away. Past carried Trocadero over to the middle of the track at the sixteenth post. Trocadero then swerved over across in front of Past. The interference seemingly cut no figure in the result. Past was made too much use of in the early stages and might have won had McCafferty waited until in the last quarter before making his run. Wired at 10 a.m. Mr. Holtman in Town MR. HOLTMAN IN TOWN. Starter Holtman arrived in Chicago yesterday en route to San Francisco, where he will do the starting, beginning December 14. Speaking of the system now used by Starter Fitzgerald at New Orleans, of lining the horses up twenty yards away from the barrier and permitting them to come on a run to it, Holtman said: "There is no doubt this is a long step backwards. It is nothing more than a revival of the old-time system before the numerous barriers were devised. What is the use of a barrier under that system? It makes bad actors and gives quick breakers all the better of the argument. What is aimed at, at the present time is to give bad actors an even break and put others than quick breakers on an equality. Take for instance a field of horses which has among them Dick Welles. How far do you suppose a fast breaker, like he is, would be in front when he got to the starter if you lined the horses up ten yards away, and permitted the field to come to the barrier on a run? He would be fully three lengths in front, wouldn't he? Well, that gives you a fair sort of an idea how the new system works." Oakland Form OAKLAND FORM. Winner B. c, by Sain Caroline Hamilton (trained by G. Covington). Went to post at 3:18. At post 7 minutes. Start good. Won handily; second driving. Father AVentker received the best of the start and, making the most of his advantage, held sway throughout under skillful handling, tiring badly at the end and just getting home. Rollick, getting away poorly and frequently impeded and messed about, closed up fast in the stretch run and was probably best. Rey Dare was roughly treated in the early running and put up a fast and game effort at the end, ran a fine race and is in his best form. Aunt Polly closely followed the winner from the start, but could never quite get up. Matt Hogan was crowded and bumped about, closed a tremendous gap from a bad start and had no chance with his incapable rider. The Miller steadily improved his position after being nearly left at the post. Cousin Carrie is fast, but a non-stayer. Sugden had no chance at the start. Scratched 42973 Quiet, 107. Forest King, badly handled and under a choking pull, ran within striking distance of the leaders to the stretch, where he came along on the extreme outside, swerving across to the inner rail in the last sixteenth and compelling the contenders to pull up, for which he was disqualified. Last Knight, away badly, ran into the lead on the first turn and showed the way home hard held to the stretch, where he was repeatedly bumped and interfered with and was a lucky second. Lacy Crawford, on the outside and close up, was knocked back at a critical moment on the stretch turn by Forest King, losing all chance of winning, but made up a lot of ground in the final quarter and finished running faster than everything. Heather Honey attended the early pacemaker closely to the stretch, where she turned into the lead on the inside and appeared like winning when she was crowded and pulled up to escape going over the fence. Caronal showed a good turn of speed. Diamante was evidently not fit and was never dangerous. Overweights Heather Honey, 2 pounds; Greyfeld, 3. Last Knight, show, 1 to 4. Lacy Crawford, show, 1 to 3. Iredeus, a fast and game colt and not quite keyed up, was easily best and after trailing John A. Scott closely to the stretch wore' him down in a jiffy and won with something in reserve. John A. Scott, at present in brilliant form, forced a terrific pace and was only beaten out in the last stride, showed superior gameness and is a genuinely improved horse. Warte Nicht held on steadily in third position throughout and at the end was going much the fastest of the trio. Gossip of the Turf GOSSIP OF THE TURF. "Capt. S. S. Brown's return to active racing in this section will be heralded by turfmen and jockey club officials with pleasant anticipations, and the Pittsburg millionaire will probably enjoy the distinction of furnishing the winter favorite for a trio of Derbys," says the Memphis Commercial Appeal of Nov. 29. "The Brown string, at least a portion of the stable which will race in the west next spring, is in winter quarters at Montgomery Park. It includes Auditor, Proceeds, Conjurer and Audience, a quartet of two-year-olds that are extensively entered in everything for their age and sex in 1904. Proceeds and Auditor are already mentioned for the Crescent City Derby, and it is more than likely that Auditor will receive his preparation for that race by trainer Robert Tucker. The Crescent City Derby is the first of the western Derbys" to be decided and it will be followed by the Arkansas Derby, Tennessee and Kentucky Derbys. From present indications Proceeds will be installed favorite in the winter booking on the Tennessee Derby. English Lad, property of Fred Cook; Burns & Waterhouse's Rock-away; Fred Cook's Fred Leppert; John A. Drake's Ort Wells; John Fay's Ed Tierney; J. W. Schorr's Monastic II., Moharib and Sweet Gretchen; Barney Schreiber's Otto Stifel; W. F. Schulte's Batts, a colt that won several races on the Canadian circuit; E. R. Thomas' Pulsus; E. E. Smathers' Dick Bernard; M. H. Tichenor's Flo Bob and Flower King and several belonging to Corrigan, are the best looking on paper that remain eligible for the Tennessee Derby. The list of elig-ibles for the Kentucky Derby is about the same as in the Tennessee Derby, and Captain Brown is well represented in both contests. In the Tennessee Oaks the PiUsburger is represented by Audience, Sweet Givtchen, J. W. Schorr's fast daughter of Flying Dutchman, is also a proposition that will engage winter attention of the 'hot stove ring." An American bred yearling colt by Russell Brandolette sailed for England last Saturday, on the steamship Minnehaha. The colt is to be entered in all the two-year-old stakes in England for which he is eligible. G. S. McDonald is the owner of the colt, having purchased him from "Snapper" Garrison, part owner of the Manhattan Stable. Garrison bought the yearling at the spring sales for $1,750.. The colt is considered by many horsemen to be a stake colt of high class, as he has shown some fast quarters this fall. Superintendent Clare, of Brighton Beach, has been doing considerable work on the steeplechase course this fall, and it is promised that when the races open next spring the course will be an excellent one. Last season there was a great deal ofcom-plaint about the course being heavy, and it is to make it firm and safe that efforts are being directed. In the reconstruction of the course last spring it was necessary to place a lot of new material, and it never became solid .and properly firm by reason of the weather conditions. Trocadero was taken back while gcing down the backstretch and came with a rush in the final furlong and won going away. Past carried Trocadero over to the middle of the track at the sixteenth post. Trocadero then swerved over across in front of Past. The interference seemingly cut no figure in the result. Past was made too much use of in the early stages and might have won had McCafferty waited until in the last quarter before making his run. Dutiful ran his race. He broke well in his stride and showed early speed, but tired when it came to a hard drive. Falernian got caught in a jam at the first turn and was crowded back. Captain Forsee ran a fast and game race and is above the average caliber, raced into a long lead from a rear position at the start and stood a long drive home very gamely. The Cure got away well and saved ground when the field turned lor home, finishing fast. Military Man was outrun and under pressure early, but kept within striking distance of the winner and finished slowly wearing him down. Telephone broke slowly and ran a good race. Padua, an unlucky colt, had a very rough journey to the stretch, narrowly escaping falling several times on the far turn and really had no chance and finished easing up. The Crescent City Derby is the first of the western Derbys to be decided and it will be followed by the Arkansas Derby, Tennessee and Kentucky Derbys. From present indications Proceeds will be installed favorite in the winter booking on the Tennessee Derby. English Lad, property of Fred Cook; Burns & Waterhouse's Rock-away; Fred Cook's Fred Leppert; John A. Drake's Ort Wells; John Fay's Ed Tierney; i J. Last season there was a great deal of com-plaint about the course being heavy, and it is to make it firm and safe that efforts are being directed. In the reconstruction of the course last spring it was necessary to place a lot of new material, and it never became solid .and properly firm by reason of the weather conditions.
