Military Man, lucky and skillfully handled, trailed the leaders closely and at the end was wearing the winner down and will do well over a longer distance of ground. Ananias forced the pace throughout, ran a superior race and was pinned on the inside rail by the winner in the closing drive. Ebony, still big and high and not keyed up, tired in the stretch run after seriously contending for the lead in the first five furlongs. Silver Fizz, easily best, got away slowly, moved up gradually and took command in the J stretch, coming away like a flash at the end, was much the best and is in rarely good form. 1 Shellmount showed superior speed and ran in surprisingly improved form. Invictus closed j a big gap in the last six furlongs and ran in suddenly improved form. I. O. U., nearly left, I made up a lot of ground and favors soft going. Miss Vera went steadily throughout. J The Ledaean likes a cup route. Chileno failed to stay. Alice Cary, evidently not keved up for so long a journey, made the running for six furlongs and then quit. Rose of May is in bad form. Horatius showed amazingly improved form, went out and took up the running on the back-stretch in spite of the fast pace and came home alone, was much the best and ran like a crackerjack. Yellow Tail broke flatfooted, but was otherwise lucky, saving ground on the first tui-n and made up ground fast at the half, but could never get up. Divina, a slow beginner, had a rough journey up the backstretch and in the stretch run closed up with a whirlwind rush. Dupont improved his position with astonishing rapidity from the half to 1 the finish. Veterano, after trailing his field, also closed up like a cyclone at the end. Forest King failed to stay. Sad Sam was inadequately handled. His rider lost the race by a clumsy finish. Martinmas was away poorly, but closed up in steady fashion throughout and finished running faster than the leaders. Burdock 3howed a lot of speed in the early running and led his field for nearly six furlongs before he succumbed Cambaceres was not good enough. No mishaps. From early last May until the end of October several hundred horses were running at meetings held at Los Angeles, Sacramento, and Petaluma, California, and Seattle, Washington. A unmber were credited with notable performances. All of these horses will take part in the San Francisco and Los Angeles meetings, and knowledge of their performances is necessary to those who wish to consider intelligently the relative merits of the horses that will be raced at the two cities named. Daily Rac ing Form has prepared a record of the racing at the two Sacramento meetings, the Petaluma meeting, the Los Angeles October meeting and the long Seattle meeting, and it is now ready for sale at 15 cents. FORM BOOKS READY. The monthly form book for November -will be ready for delivery on and after Monday, . Nov. 30. It contains charts of all racing from Nov. 2 to Nov. 28 inclusive, and is a necessity to all who keep close track of the performances of the thoroughbred. Page [4] Tennessee Derby and Oaks u- a TENNESSEE DERBY AND OAKS. Below will be found nominations in full to the Tennessee Derby and Oaks for 1904, also list of declarations out of each made May 1, 1903. The next declaration is due on or before January 2, 1904. To declare out of the Derby then costs $25, the Oaks ?20. The Tennessee Derby last season was worth $6,925 gross and with $700 to second and $300 to third, fourth to save stake, the net value to the winner was $5,625. In this coming season's list will be found some of the very best two-year-olds out this season. Of those that raced in the east Conjurer, Sweet Gretchen and Pulsus were stake winners in the best company. In the west Flo Bob, English Lad, Proceeds, Dick Bernard, Ed Tierney and Batts were all stake winners. Rockaway and Toledo, too, at times have shown form to give them a Derby chance. Judging by the past many of the good ones will be taken out of this race, yet it is a race made for a high-class horse, as there is neither a penalty nor an allowance. All carry their weight. Last spring this race was won by Claude after he had won the California Derby. This horse made himself famous as the winner of three Derbys, and finished second with 127 lbs. up in the American Derby, the winner carrying but 115 lbs. This horse's performances certainly antagonizes the idea that some trainers entertain that good horses should not be prepared for early events. The Tennessee Oaks for fillies, conditions similar to the Derby, no penalty or allowance, distance one mile, is a race for the best filly. Among the famous winners of this race the names of May Hempstead and Lady Schorr will be found. And this coming Tennessee Oaks will be one of, if not the richest, stake offered for three-year-old fillies in the west this coming season, should net the winner $4,000. Neither of these races has ever received the support from horsemen they deserve. Some of the prominent iUlies eligible to the Oaks are Audience, 3weet Gretchen, "White Plume and Shawana. following are the lists of eligibles to both ' The Tennessee Derby for 1904.
