ED EARLY KNOCKS DOWN TYROLIAN AND IS PROMPTLY DISQUALIFIED. Favorite Loses His Rider in Steeplechase at City Park Gloomy Weather Causes Light Attendance at Both Tracks. New Orleans, La., January 10- Racing at Crescent Park today terminated sensationally. Ed Early, which finished first in the last race was disqualified for fouling and throwing Tyrolian just as the end was readied. Tyrolian, the leader, was joined by Ed Early at the last eighth post. The latter, ridden by Sewell, immediately began swerving and Impeding Tyrolian. Twenty yard's from the wire lie made a final carom with such force that Tyrolian went down just as lie reached the finish. All Scarlet, unable to avoid the prostrate horse, fell over him. T. Walsh, who rode Tyrolian, was carried to ihe scale room. There he recovered. He was weighed in and tiie weight was found correct. The judges promptly set back Ed Early and gave the race to Tyrolian. Some thought that the race should have been awarded to Mabel Simmg, which had finished third, contending that Tyrolian had not crossed the line. This was true, "but, as he had reached the finish before lie was thrown and knocked back, he was justly entitled to the race. The decision met with approval from the majority of the spectators. Dreary weather prevailed today and only the regulars were in evidence. Twenty -one books were in line. Jerry Wernberg was excused from starting in the Jirf $ JsbwH 8 .jstefc Ubsiableimatej4?uiillng, Star,- was permitted to remain in the barn because of the slow condition of the track. Fred Burlew, acting for Newton Bennington, today disposed of the two-year-old De Oro to S. T. White for $2,500. Jockey McMullen was suspended by the starter for ten days for misbehavior at the post. Sam Louis, who has been a persistent bidder on winners in selling races, ran up Consuelo to $700 today. This, was an increase of $300 over her entered price. She was retained with an advance bid. Louis falling to get Consuelo, put in a claim for King's Charm, paying G. C. Bennett & Co. $1,100 for the horse. Louis Cella was among today's arrivals. He will remain here for some time. Albert Simons and a select coterie of sharpshooters came over from City Park and bet heavily on the winners Southern Cross aud Consuelo. Gloomy weather curtailed the attendance at City Park tills afternoon. Nineteen books cut in. The rain was not heavy enough to materially change the condition of the course. The 1 to 2 shot Czaraphine came to grief in the fifth race and Happy Jack II. was beaten in the sixth, but in the other five favorites and second choices won. With no feature standing out, most interest was In the two-year-old race in which Boserrian and Karama put up an excellent struggle and in the steeplechase won by Evander. Careful riding was the rnle in the crosscountry race, but at that the favorite New Amsterdam, lost his rider at the second jump while Conclave fell at the eighth jump. The going for the steeplechase was a trifle muddy, but on the regular track tiie footing was never worse than slow and sticky. The judgps today ordered that jockey Obert be allowed to ride for his contract employer, George Holle. Obert has been sick since Ids suspension, but will be in shape to ride again in a few days. Sweet Jane bled in the jumping race and this accounted for her poor showing. Jockey Ryan, who had the mount on Chanley, was asked to give some explanation of the horse's poor showing. Ryan said that when New Amsterdam fell lie interfered with Chanley, forcing him to pull up. Dr. Rexford purchased of J. C. Calin this afternoon tiie horses Galmeda, Tom Anderson, a two-year-old, and Magic Power, a three-year-old maiden by His Highness Scarlet Letter. M. .J. Shannon, formerly trainer for George C. Bennett, arrived here yesterday and will remain for tiie winter. Shannon will get together a small stable aud race them up the Hue next spring. Does Not Expect a Division of Dates: Bennett Says Condon and Stuart Will Insist on Thirty Days Straight at Oaklawn DOES NOT EXPECT A DIVISION OF DATES. Bennett Says Condon and Stuart Will Insist on Thirty Days Straight at Oaklawn. .Memphis, Tenn., January 30. "If there is a spring meeting at Essex Park," said George C. Bennett, who has just returned from a two weeks' visit to Hot Springs, "It is my impression that it will not lie opened until after Oaklawn Park closes a meeting of thirty days which will open on February 17. Sheriff Williams wants to see the tracks have an even break and he has proposed a committee meeting to discuss the question of a division- of the dates, but I am of the opinion that Dan Stuart and John Condon will refuse to show any quarter to the Essex Park people and I do not believe that Sheriff Williams will interfere when they take this stand. The Essex Park people, I was told at Hot Springs, have no money, that is. not enough to hold a meeting, and unless the American Turf Association gives the club financial support, I do not believe they will have much use for dates. However, the matter will be fully determined in the course of the next ten days." Business Men Will not Interfere. Hot Springs, Ark., January 10. Secretary Robert R. McRoberts of the Hot Springs Jockey Club addressed the executive committee of the Business Men's League tonight In an effort to have that organization intervene for an equal division of tiie racing dates at the two local tracks. Secretary Cooley said after the meeting: "Mr. McRoberts was heard through courtesy. The League will not grant his apjieal. It is not the province of the League to interfere in the troubles of the turf." Persons well informed as to the local situation tonight say that under Its present management Essex Park is down' and out and that the possibilities of a meeting next spring are decidedly remote. A. T. A. Directors to Meet next Friday: Session Will be Held in New Orleans-Dates May be Allotted-Other Matters A. T. A. DIRECTORS TO MEET NEXT FRIDAY. Session Will Be Held in New Orleans Dates May Be Allotted Other Matters. New Orleans,. La., January 10. Directors of the American Turf Association will hold a meeting in tills city on Friday next. W. Campbell Scott, secretary of the Kentucky Association track at Lexington and a director of the American Turf Association, arrived here last night. President Matt Winn and Secretary .McAllister are due here Friday morning. Some important business will come up at this meeting. Dates for the. different tracks up the line will probably be allotted aud some action will lie taken against those men who raced under the banner of the organization during the summer and fall and then .returned to the 'Western Jockey Club fold when the local season opened. Thomas II. Williams, Colonel Dan Burns and Pe.rcy W. Treat have been re-elected president, vice-president and secretary respectively of the New California Jockey Club. Haggin Plans to Aid Lexington Poor: Visitors to Elmendorf Stud Will be Charged Fee for Benefit of Hospitals HAGGIN PLANS TO AID LEXINGTON POOR. Visitors to Elmendorf Stud Will Be Charged Fee For Benefit of Hospitals. Lexington, Ky., January 10: The noted Elmendorf breeding establishment, which lias long been ttie center vpf attraction for visitors to the Blue Grass region, will in the future be used to assist the two local hospitals in a financial way. It -Is believed the revenue to le derived from plans formulated by James B. Haggin will increase the fund many hundreds of dollars during the course of a year. The management of the famous farm will set aside one day each week, to be known as "visitors' day," and each person, entering the gates of the place on that day will lie taxed a small sum, which will lie placed in the fund for the hospitals. It is estimated that during the past few years as many as 1100 people call at the farm eacli week and ask to lie shown the principal horses and places, of interest, and it is necessary to keep a staff of men especially for the purpose, and .Mr. Haggin Is determined to at least help the poor and sick of the city by the new movement. The plan is not to deny visitors the sights of the place, but to concentrate visiting ail at one time or on the same day of the week, when everyone can be given the same information at practically the same time. The price of admission lias not yet been fixed, but will not lie less than ten cents nor more than twenty-five cents, and, most likely the former. The Idea is regarded as a happy one by friends of the Institutions which are to receive the benefits. Danny Maher Now a Hotel Man DANNY MATTER NOW A HOTEL MAN. Roche the lease of the Rossmore Hotel at Broadway and 42d street and will hereafter devote his time when in America to catering to his friends at the popular Broadway hostelry. The consideration paid for the Rossmore lease is known to have been a handsome one. Maher Intends to go to England next spring, ride a few races and then quit the turf for good. Will Not Transfer Stakes to Oaklawn WILL NOT TRANSFER STAKES TO OAKLAWN. Memphis, Tenn., January 10. In a Hot Springs dispatch It was recently stated that. In the event of no racing at Montgomery Park next spring, plans were being made to transfer the Tennessee Derby and Tennessee Oaks to Oaklawn Park for decision. President Montgomery says such a statement is incorrect. "Those races will be decided at Montgomery Park or not at all," said he. Hachmeister in Charge at Oaklawn HACHMEISTER IN CHARGE AT OAKLAWN. John Hach-meister, secretary of the St. Louis Fair Grounds Association, will take charge of the meeting at Oaklawn Park. Edward Maginn will be presiding judge aud handicapper. May Bond Clubhouse Commissioners MAY BOND CLUBHOUSE COMMISSIONERS. "It Is said on good authority that in future the clubhouse commissioners who wish to operate on the Jockey Club tracks will be compelled to put up a $10,000 bond to guarantee clients against possible loss," says the New York Sun. "Last year several of these betting agents failed to make good to the extent of some heavy wagers, so that measures will lie taken, it is said, to prevent a repetition of the practice. There were too many clubhouse agents on various occasions, but the number fell off when the admission rate to the clubhouse was Increased to $7 a day." Suspension of Jockey McBride Creates Comment at Oakland Jockey Smith Injured by the Falling of Christine A. . ' .. - San Francisco, Cal., January 10. The virtual ruling off of McBride, one of the present season's most successful riders, by the stewards of the California Jockey Club, on the suspicion of pulling horses at Oakland, came as a thunder clap from a clear sky. The suspension of Phillips passed practically unnoticed. Several prominent horsemen expressed dissenting opinions from the stewards regarding the culpability of the accused Jockey. These horsemen aver that Romaine, on the occasion of his last defeat when ridden by McBride, was in no condition to put forth his best efforts, in other words, he lacked the "ginger" that certain artificial speed producing stimulants are supposed to create and to which he may have been accustomed. The public generally mrist have approved of the action of the racing authorities judging by today's big attendance. Barney Schrelber's great Bannockburn colt, Dr. Gardner, confirmed his superlative class by his clean cut and decisive victory in the Maxim Handicap at a mile and a sixteenth, run in close to record time over a trio of the best handicap horses in training here Lubin, Gregor K. and Red Leaf all in receipt of big weight concessions from the tbree-year-old. "Big Bill" Knapp scored his first victory In a long time today on an outside 'mount In Phalanx. Radtke. Is. in temporary eclipse. v. . . Jockey W. Recent arrivals at the Bennington barn are First Water, Voorhees and Gold Badge, which have been turned out on the Flelschmann farm at East Millstone, N. J. First Water looks In splendid winter condition, and there hardly seems a doubt but that he will train the coming season. Looked upon as one of the smartest youngsters out last year. First Water went wrong after winning the Juvenile aud National Stallion Stakes. He was beaten by Woolwich for the Expectation Stakes at Gravesend, and then put by for the year. Text on a Horse's Tombstone TEXT ON A HORSE'S TOMBSTONE. In the center of a field at Waverhill, Suffolk, England, is a large flat stone covering the grave of a mare which died in 11532, inscribed as follows: "Polka. She never made a false step. Ecclesiastes Hi., 19th verse." A reference to chapter and verse shows the following: "For that which befalleth the sons of men befalleth beasts, even one thing befalleth them; as the one dieth, so dieth the other." This is probably the only instance of a text from the Scriptures appearing on a memorial stone to' a racehorse. Answers to Queries ANSWERS TO QUERIES. H. IL, Detroit. Mich. Your lie t was void. J. V. Racing Interests Are on Firm Basis: Argentine Republic is Making Rapid Strides in Development of the Thoroughbred RACING INTERESTS ARE ON FIRM BASIS. Argentine Republic is' Making Rapid Strides in the Development of the Thoroughbred. Racing is firmly established in Argentine Republic. The Jockey Club, founded In 1883 at Buenos Ayres, has standardized the race courses and brought about a wonderful development In the breeding of pure stock. Ti.ere are twelve racetracks in the country, and several of the stakes are well worth winning. The Grand Prize is $22,000 in value, many other events range from $14,000 to $9,000, while In only five instances are races wortli less than $1,200. The Argentine Stud Book contains the entries of 1,300 mares, which each year produce some 60d youngsters for the race course. What may be considered as important studs In the country number twelve, but there are several less pretentious establishments. The Las Ortigas Stud is the most prominent, and its owner; Senor Correas, has for some six years past supplied the best blood of that country. Diamond Jubilee, which King Edward recently sold for $150,000, will take the place of the "Argentine St. Simon," Neapolis. a nineteen-year-old son of Springfield and Pa poll, and, therefore, a half brother to Orvieto. In the course of eight years the produce of Neapolis has won something like $100,000 in stake money. Oil his arrival in the Argentine, Diamond Jubilee, will find a first-class lot of mares, among which are several daughters of Neapolis. The Argentine climate lends Itself admirably to. the breeding of the thoroughbred, which gains more ami more importance year by year. The pastures are excellent and the land produces the best European herbage. Racehorse Owners' Association RACEHORSE OWNERS' ASSOCIATION. The horsemen of England have started an organization known as the Racehorse Owners Association, Limited. The object of the association Is to protect the interest of the horsemen generally. It Includes among Its council Lord Carnarvon, Lord Mar- , cus Beresford, Lord Westbury, Sir H. K. Randall and others equally as well known. It is not the idea of the association to usurp any of the functions of the Jockey Club, but rather to work in harmony with this body for the good of the.turf. The association has almost one hundred members now, and the list is growing daily. One of the evils that will early claim the attention of the association is the matter of horse transportation. This is a subject of much concern in England, where the horses are all trained on private grounds and shipped to racing- points when wanted. The item of expense is a considerable one, but so far the railway companies have shown no disposition to favor the horsemen in any way. In union there is strength, and acting on this old maxim the association hopes to accomplish some needed reforms In the shipping of horses.
