PRICE 5 CETS Talent Has a Tough Day: Only Two Out of Thirteen Favorites at New Orleans Finish First TALENT HAS A TOUGH DAY. ONLY TWO OUT OF THIRTEEN FAVORITES AT NEW ORLEANS FINISH FIRST. Jockey Ferrett is Suspended for Foul Riding Rodgers and Phillips to Sell Horses Shaw Leaves Crescent City. New Orleans, La., January 10. Form counted for naught nt City Park this afternoon. Pat Clvlll's Orly was the only one of seven favorites to score for the backers of the choices. Among the defeated ones was Alma Dufour, hacked with a feeling of certainty at the short prices 2 to 5 and t to 3. The weather was clear and delightfully warm and the card was good enough to hold out promises of stirring contests. These conditions drew a large attendance, out of which came brisk speculation and much profit to the bookmakers. A)ma Dufour's defeat in a measure was due to some crowding and bumping which occurred at the first turn, where the mare was sharply cut off and knocked back. The interference cost her four or live lengths, but apart from this she ran a. dull race. Hall kept, her out of the struggle until the race was pretty well over before making a move and it is doubtful if she would have won had she escaped the interference on the lirst turn. Alma Dufour lias only one burst of speed. It will be some time before she-is a 1 to :; shot over a horse like (Irenade, provided they meet at anything like the weights they carried today. Jockey Perrett, who rode Florizel in the race, was held responsible for the interference nnd was suspended by the judges for six days for foul riding. There were a number of arrivals from the east tuls -..vii "iil-fteV;rl"OfTttIeat:lfut:''hl' Ull'appear"-' ance at City Park during the afternoon. Among these latter were Henry Steckler, partner of Eddie Burke, one of the ldggest operators on the Metropolitan Circuit and president of the Metropolitan Turf Association. Accompanying Steckler were Bart Newsome and Frank Brown. I!. L. Rodgers has decided to dispose of his entire stable on Thursday. Included In his lot are Janeta and Garnish, the latter a great favorite with local racegoers. Rodgers has been in poor health this winter and has been advised by his doctor to go to Southern California. This is his reason for selling. Jack Phillips, tiring of the long spell of bad luck which his stable has encountered here, has also decided to sell out and all his horses will be sold Thursday. Phillips lias arranged with Fred Burlew to take Ills jockey, James Hennessey, east with him. He will go to Texas himself and put in about four months looking after some land interests he has there. Later on in the season be will go east and get together a fresh lot of horses. In their battle with twenty-four bookmakers today at the old track, the talent fared badly, as only one lukewarm choice Ruth W. managed to finish first. The most pronounced favorite defeated was I)e Oro, the crack youngster recently secured by S. T. White from Newton Bennington for a reported price of $2,500. His conqueror, Bertmont, is a smart looking colt that is showing improvement witli every race and his victory today should make him a factor in the early stakes to be decided at the Bennings meeting. After the finish of the second race jockey Johan-nessen lodged a claim of foul against Vlperine, ridden by Johnson. lie stated that Viperine swerved over in front of him in the stretch and impeded Nine when the latter was going fast. The judges did not allow the claim. Today's arrivals included jockey Jack Martin, who, it is announced, will do the riding for Hayman & Watkins. Martin appears to weigh at least 130 pounds and it will be fully 10 days before he will be at a weight that will insure him riding regularly. Jockey Willie Shaw departed yesterday for Indian Territory, where lie will enjoy himself hunting and fishing. It is said that his reason for not accepting mounts here, was that lie did not fancy the style of riding done here by a number in the kindergarten class. Invincible fully proved by his impressive victory in the handicap that he has fully recovered from his mishap in the Inaugural Handicap November 30. Billy Myer has been working wonders with the track and if no more rain falls in the next few days the old oval will lie in the best condition it has ever been in. Getting Rid of some of the Poor Ones: Unique Conditions of First Race at Oakland-Mud and Rain in Abundance GETTING RID OF SOME OF THE POOR ONES. Unique Conditions of First Race at Oakland Mud and Rain In Abundance. San Francisco, Cal., January 10. The Golden Gate has lieen one of the country's storm centers for the last four days. Telegraph wires were down in all directions and mud and rain in abundance prevailed at Oakland today. An interesting card withal was run off. Favorites and outsiders were alternately successful. The first race, won by Jake Ward, carried unique conditions. Scratched and unplaced horses are barred for the remainder of the season from starting in races at Oakland. Tarn O'Shanter, winner of the third race, was bid up and bought by J. Blute for $000, $.".00 above bis entrance price. M. H. Tichenor & Co.'s good filly Fnlletta was claimed out of the fourth race by II. W. Hoag for Barney Schreiler sold Jim Pendergast to T. A. Davies directly after his victory on' Monday. Jack Keene and his jockey, Radtke, may after all, remain here for an indefinite period. Red Leaf will be a starter in the Lissak Handicap next Saturday and Radtke may accept a mount in the Burns Handicap. Meeting of A. T. A. Directors Today MEETING OF A. T. A. DIRECTORS TODAY. New Orleans, La., January 10. The meeting of the directors of the American Turf Association scheduled for last night was not held. Several of the directors were gathered at the St. Charles Hotel last night, but there was no formal session and no business was transacted. It was announced this morning that the meeting had been postponed until Wednesday. -Edward Corrigan wired from Memphis today that he would arrive here tomorrow morning. Mr. Corrigan Explains His Visit to Memphis Pays Reward for Arrest of a Murderer. Memphis, Tenn., January 10. The presenoe here today of Edward Corrigan, looked on as the leader of theAmerican Turf Association, in company with S. R. Montgomery, president of the New Memphis Jockey Club and a steward in the Western Jockey Club, gave rise to rnbust rumors that a preliminary conference was on relative to settling the turf troubles in the west, but after spending several hours together lioth denied that such was true. When asked for a statement, Mr. Corrigan seemed just as bitter as ever in referring to the Western Jockey Club, and with emphasis declared that if the opposing forces wanted any favors from the American Turf Association they would have to pay dearly for them in the shape of concessions and a complete surrender. Mr. Corrigan said that his visit here was primarily for the purpose of settling a promised reward on the ollicer who arrested Jessie Duke, a negro who murdered John Taylor, a stablehand employed at the Corrigan barn here two years ago. Mr. Montgomery had nothing to say except that he talked to Mr. Corrigan as an old time friend of himself and his father, the late Col. H. A. Montgomery, founder of Montgomery Park. Mr. Corrigan left on an early afternoon train for New Orleans after wiring his trainer he would le on hand shortly after sunrise at City Park to personally superintend the workouts of his racing string. Only Three Out of 1,728 Youngsters Racing in 1905 Unbeaten Interesting Figures. The aggregate number of two-year-olds participating in the 1,870 races to which horses of that tender age were eligible on the principal tracks of the United States and Canada during the year 1903 was 1,728. Of these G90 were winners, 313 were "in the money," though not finishing first, and 723 were unplaced in all of their starts. The total amount distributed to these 1.003 horses that were money earners was $1,419,374. In 1904 there were 1,772 races, 1,725 starters, 094 winners and $1,529,020 distributed to the two-year-olds. Father Catchem, with 1G to his credit, was the winner of the most races. Other winners of ten or more races were: Bertha E., Calabash, Chief Hayes, Jillett, Mint Boy, Ossineke, Silver Sue and Tiehimingo. Burgomaster was the winner of the most money among the two-year-olds of last year. Ormondale, the Futurity winner, was second and Mohawk II. was third. Esoteric, Heaslip and Prospero were the only unbeaten two-year-olds. First Water, Goldic, Killkare, Leonora W., Lotus, Ormondale, Roman Gold, Sir Wilfred, Wasteful and Yankee Consul were the only others that raced and were not unplaced. J. K. F. started in more races than any of the winners. He was out just a half hundred times, Gentian, among the non-winners, however, tops him three in the matter of starts. Others starting forty or more times were Agnolo, Away, Belden, Henry Waring, Inspector Girl, Ossineke and Tiehimingo. Troubadour is dead at the Senorlta Stud of the late Captain S. S. Brown. Troubadour, a bay horse, by Lislion Glenluine, was foaled In 1S82 and was one of the great racers of the early eighties and long a prime favorite of his lately deceased owner. In a year of extremely good three-year-olds he ran third to Volante and Favor in the American Derby of 1885 and won the Charles Green Stakes and St. Leger at St. Louis, the Palmer House Stakes at Washington Park and other races of less importance. In 1880 lie won the Suburban and brought off probably the greatest betting coup of Captain Brown's turr career. He started In but three races that year and won them all, a purse at Latonia. the Suburban Handicap and a special with Miss Woodford at Sheepshead Bay for $500 a side and $3,000 added, at a mile and a quarter. Retired to the stud he sired some useful horses, but none as good as himself. Page 2 DAILY RACING FORM ISSUED EVERY DAY. DAILY RACING FORM PUBLISHING CO. An annual occurrence that' never lessens in interest to admirers of the turf is the announcement of weights assigned the horses engaged In the big eastern handicaps the Brooklyn, Suburban and Brighton. Weights for the Brighton are due January 25 and for the oilier two February 1. Probable weights are already the subject of animated discussion, but on one point only are all disputants agreed and that is that Sysonby is the inevitable top weiglit. Concerning the trend of amateur conclusions, the New York Sun of Monday says: "All expexts agree that James R. Keene's Sysonby will receive the top weight in each of the handicaps, but there is some difference of opinion as to whether Mr. Vosburgh will assign ISO or 132 pounds to the famous son of Melton and Opt line. Such u burden Is not considered too great in view of the past achievements of Sysonby, yet there are a few students of form that jielleve 129 pounds will be the ofliclal allotment. In looking over the long tntry lists to pick out the other horses In their order as to merit and probable weight assignments the sharps for the most part believe that II. P. Whitney's Artful will follow Sysonby in point of rating by the official handicapper, who may give to her perhaps tlve pounds less than the Keene horse, which is equivalent to the usual sex allowance. This opinion has been formed because of the tendency to place Artful practically on even terms vi It It Sysonby, although some of the smartest horsemen have always maintained that the Whitney mare would be handily trimmed should a meeting with the son of Melton ever come to pass. Because o- the fact that Hermls. which received top weight last year in these three events, is unsound, and con-s.eqneutly not the great performer that he was when lie captured the Suburban Handicap two years ago. It Is thought that he will get about 125 pounds from the handicapper, while John" A. Drake's Ort Wells, also an uncertain quantity, may get in with perhaps !! pound less than this allotment. "Expert opinion also rates Stalwart, which did not nice at all last year, on an equal basis with the Drake horse, with Oiseau and Agile, both good three-year-olds last season, slated to -earry the same weight, or a pound less than the burden to be packed by Ort Wells and Stalwart. Going down the line, the handlcappers are Inclined to place Wild M.'nt and Hamburg Belle next, with possibly 120 pounds each, to be followed by Tanya and Delhi with a pound less, and then Cairngorm, The Picket, Tradition, First Mason, Blandy, Oxford and others until the three-year-old Burgomaster Is reached in the calculations. Burgomaster was easily the best two-year-old colt, and for that reason it is believed that he will receive about 100 pounds from Mr. Vosburgh, as that Is atwut the weight usually handed to the leading three-year-old in these handicaps. Kiamesha, always partial to light burdens, may be asked to pick up aiiout 105 pounds, with Perverse, the champion two-year-old filly last fall, getting in with perhaps two pounds less. Whimsical, another high-class Ally, and Ormcndnle. the Futurity winner of 11)05, are thought to be slated for about 100 pounds." ni'i" THE ILLINOIS Room 623, 225 Dearborn St., Tel. Har. 1876.
