NO. 28. CHICAGO, FRIDAY, FEBRUARY 2, 1906. PRICE 5 CEJTTB Karama a Star Youngster: Runs Half a Mile in 474 Equalling the City Park Track Record KARAMA A STAR YOUNGSTER. RUNS HALF A MILE IN 47J, EQUALLING THE CITY PARK TRACK RECORD. Coruscate and Harry Stephens in an Exciting Struggle Nicol Rides Three Winners Romanelli is Twice Fined. New Orleans, La., February 1. Tin- track record for half a mile was equalled by Karama in the opening race at City Park this afternoon. Tlie son of Jean lSereaud and Knough made a show of his opponents, winning pulled up in :47. Had there Ijcpn anything in the race to push him to the limit lie would surely have run it in :47, possibly better. Libation, with 115 pounds up, set the track record at :17 on March 2.'!, 1905. Karauia was bred by Milton Young at McGrathiaua Stud, Lexington, Ky. The performance of this youngster today is the best by any two-year-old in 1900. His time for the first three-eighths was ::!5, and for the first quarter :1ES. There were some exciting finishes this afternoon, but the results, from a betting angle, were not satisfactory to the greatest number of the spectators, Hossmond being the only favorite to win. Jockey Nicol again rode three winners Airship, Red Ruler and Merry Acrobat. In the Airship race, jockey Romanelli. who rode Moiiacodor, claimed that Nicol had fouled him. The judges regarded the claim as frivolous and fined Romanelli $23. "Thank you," said the jockey with some sa'rcasm. "You are fined $25 more for your Impudence," said Jndgc Trevelyan. "Now you may go." The seventh nice, at one mile and a half, furnished the best contest of the day, Coruscate and Harry Stephens fighting It out head and head j through the last three-eighths of a mile. First one ' would show iu front and then the other. The finish was so thrilling that it brougutthe jrasypyg Hi The graiidstantl to'lts' feet in vociferous "applause. If the track remains fast and Floral King continues to do as well as at present, he will be a starter in the New Orleans Handicap next Saturday. He is asked to shoulder .130 pounds in the race and give away lumps of weight to some of the others. Trainer MeCoulskey has the korse as good just now as he probably ever was. ' Starter Cassldy suspended jockey Morris six days for pulling up Regale in the second race. Oregar also got six days for general disobedience at the post. The judges will allow jockey Wishard, whose week of suspension will expire Saturday, to ride for Ids father and employer on that day, and also lo fill au engagement made some time ago to ride I Auditor for II. C. Riddle in the stake race. Judge Swing's Decree in Madden Case JUDGE SWING'S DECREE IN MADDEN CASE. Cincinnati, O., February 1. In announcing his decree iu the case of Mrs. Anna Madden against John K. Madden, her husband, for alimony. Judge Swing today declared the charges made by the wife against the record of her husband as a breeder of thoroughbred horses to have been uususlained by testimony. Mrs. Madden is awarded $250 per month, to be secured by $05,000 worth of projierty at Lexington. Ky. The only reference made to the custody of the two sous, who are now with their father at Hamburg Place, is the statement that they are not within the jurisdiction of the court. Sir Wilfred Lowers an Ascot Record: Runs Five-Eighths of a Mile in 591-Durnell Gets Money Muss-Horner is Suspended I SIR WILFRED LOWERS AN ASCOT RECORD. I Runs Five-eighths of a Mile in :59 Durnell Gets Money Muss Horner Is Suspended. Los Angeles, Cal., February 1. In winning the third race today, Sir Wilfred set a new record for five-eighths of a mile over the Ascot Park track. He ran the distance in 592 seconds and, in the opinion of many horsemen who saw the performance, had there been anything to force him out lie would have smashed the American record of :50, which was made by George F. Smith over the old Ray District track at San Francisco in 1S93. The previous record at Ascot Park was 1:00, made by Gold Rose, December 5, 1001, while she was the property of Green 11. Morris. The weather today was delightful. In consequence there was an increase iu the attendance. "Roots" Durnell had another big day in a betting way. J. 15. Brady was another heavy winner. Jockey Miller's riding was a distinct feature, especially so his handling of Hcuchman. Duruell took Money Muss away from McCafferty, bidding hiui up from $1,500 to $1,000. Jockey Homer was fined $50 and suspended for one week for rough riding. He will, however, be ierniitted to ride for his employer. At one time he wus favorite for the race of 1005, but he has not been seen under the colors since last February. Kjrklaud, which is given second highest weight, was the winner last year. He is owned by Mr. Bibby of Liverpool, and is regarded as a strong factor for the 1906 running. Drumeree was the winner in 1903. John M. P. recently created a sensation by winning at odds of 100 to 1. Ascetic's Silver unseated her jockey at the first obstacle in the race of last year and riderless led the field home. The Gunner 1'mished second in the race of 1904. Kiora is a New Zealand horse of considerable merit. He won the Irwell Steeplechase ,at Manchester about two weeks ago. He was once shipwrecked and made a swim to shore which watchers at the outset were willing to call impossible. It is said that King Edward recently tried to buy. Hack Watch. There are four horses iu the list of cligibles that are owned by Americans. Phil May is the property of "Mr. Cotton." He was so impressed with the horse's running iu the race of last year that "he bought him when he was offered at auction. "Mr. Cotton" started Seahorse II. in the race of 1905, and as he had made up his mind to bring that horse to America he concluded that Phil May, which had looked like a winner before he made the mistake at the last jump, would have a royal chance for the race this year. Now, however, "Mr. Cotton" says he believes that Phil May's wind is siigthly affected and that the Aintree course may prove too much of a task for him. Jimmy Owens has gone from France to England and will have the mount on Phil May in the big race. Dathi and Darine belong to Thomas Clyde and Prophet HI. is the property of Foxhall Kcene. Prophet III. has never carried colors over the timber. Doth Dathi and Darine have raced in England. The Rum Surprises Owner: Williams Backs Waterwing and Loses More than the Purse THE RAM SURPRISES OWNER. WILLIAMS BACKS WATER WING AND LOSES MORE THAN THE PURSE. St. Valentine the Only Winning Favorite at Crescent Park John Lowo in Charge of the Hayman Horses. New Orleans, La.. February 1. Only one favorite rewarded the confidence of the talent at the old track this afternoon. St. Valentine, from the-Shields' barn, was that one, and It is doubtful if anyone other than his Immediate stable connections profited much by his victory., Probably odds of 3 to C appealed to them, but not so with the rank and file. Short odds against logical wimiers have previously brought, disaster here. The card was featureless, but despite this fact a good crowd was present. W. S. Williams, owner of The Ram, lost a splendid opportunity to cash by the victory of his horse. He considered the colt's chances slim and placed a commission of $000 on Waterwlug. His chagrin was great when The Ram simply cantered away from Waterwlug. John Lowe has had several of the JL L. Hayman horses transferred to him since the split-up between Hayman and Watkius. He will train and race the horses here, and if any purchasers can be found will dispose of them; if not, he will take them back to New Y'ork. Lowe said today that when he reaches New Y'ork he will take charge of the best part of the Hayman string and prepare them for racing during the season. C. W. Oivcns and S. R. Lawrence shipped fourteen horses, their combined strings, to Hot Springs today, where they will be raced at Oaklawu. Before departure Mr. Lawrence purchased Master Prim from J." W. Paiiglc, "paying" $300 for "aim. The groom having charge of Ainfortas, owned by J. W. Harding, was seized with a fit just before the third race. One of the men who was at the stable when the groom was stricken thought he would lend a hand by bringing Ainfortas to the paddock. He brought the wrong horse. The mistake was discovered in time. Brooklyn, Suburban and Brighton Handicap Weights BROOKLYN, SUBURBAN AND BRIGHTON HANDICAP WEIGHTS Following its custom of long standing. Daily Racing Form lays before Its readers the weights assigned the horses engaged iu three great eastern handicaps, the Brooklyn, Suburban and Brighton. As was suggested in commenting on the Brighton Handicap weights January 25, Mr. Vosburgh adhered closely to the standard there established when it came to apportioning imposts to the horses engaged in the Brooklyn and Suburban, the greatest variatiou being in the ease of Dr. Leggo, which was given seven pounds more iu the Brooklyn than had been assigned hlui iu the Brighton. In both the earlier handicaps Sysonby has been given the same weight assigned him in the Brighton. The Brooklyn Is without penalties, but penalties for winning accrue in both the Suburban and Brighton, so the imposts now assigned may be materially increased in the cases of a number of the horses by the time the dates for their decision arrive. Sysonby as the limit horse can gain no penalty. This tabulation gives the owners, weights and the weight on or off by the scale of weight for age anil should be preserved: Suburban, -Brighton. . ?MV?kly"t gr- .V Owners. - Horses. 3 . & " ex - to o te jo ; ?S g a" ft: J gate gate : wOO m O O wOO J. Page 4 Speed of the Winning Two-Year-Olds: Three Track Records Are Broken and Two Equalled in January-some Shifty Youngsters SPEED OF THE WINNING TWO-YEAR-OLDS. Three Track Records Are Broken and Two Equalled in January Some Shifty Youngsters. Three track records were broken and two others were equalled by the two-year-olds racing during the mouth of January. The new marks are Sweet Kilty's :11J for three and one-half furlongs at Ascot Park; Bertinont's :42J. for the same distance at Crescent I'ark, and Boserrian's :33J for three furlongs at City I'ark. When Bemay and Frank Lord ran their dead heat In :4S at Crescent I'ark on Tuesday last they equalled a record of long standing for the half mile at that track. In fact it is the third time in fourteen years that so fast a rait; has been run over the old course at New Orleans. The record was established in 1892 by Surget, an aged bay gelding by I'awnee, out of Ouachita. It was not equalled until Lady Greenwood reached the notch in 1901. The other record tied was that for the three and one-half furlongs at Oakland, it is now held jointly by Sir Wilfred and Kappa at i-llj. Incidentally this is but three-quarters of a second slower than the American record which is held by Judge Thomas, which as a seven-year-old, carrying 131 pounds, ran three and one-half furlongs at Butte, Montana, in :40J on July 14. 1!)02.
