STONER HILL AND USURY DIVIDE PURSE IN FOURTH RACE. Radtke Rides In Poor Form That Fall May Have Affected .Him Baleshed Fools His Followers Gossip. New Orleans, La., February 9. Tlicrc was good racing, despite bad track conditions at Crescent Park this afternoon. The opening race was won by Arsenal in commanding style, but all the others were hard fought contests. Radlke's riding was not in keeping with his reputation. In three of his live races he was apparently riding the best horses, but put up weak finishes. Stoner Hill, which ran a dead heat with Usury, was by far the best and only stupidity on the part of Radtke prevented him from taking all of first money. He had a lead of three lengths when rounding the stretcli bend. Radtke began easing him up with the result that when Usury challenged strongly in the last sixteenth, he was unprepared for the rush and was extremely fortunate to make it a dead heat. On Aurumaster he lost a race that he should have won easily but for making the mistake of being too far out of the running in the first part of the race. Los Angeleno lasted long enough to beat him out to the finish by a head. In the second and third races he was clearly outridden by Sewell and J. Johnson respectively, but was probably on inferior horses when mounted on Fargo and Helen Lucas. His other mount was Enverite. on. which he was practically left and then finished tUtdr-stiil,!ivflfi&Wue: "-eVln'earnU' Ueuut today. Her performance was impressive. Some observers say she has the Crescent City Derby as good as won. A smart coterie of sharpshooters from City Park track came over to the old track and bet on Rale-shed as if the raec was over. The colt ran a bad race and if the form he showed this afternoon is his best, somebody was gold-bricked when purchasing him. II. C. Meyers and .T. H. Boyd each shipped eight horses to Hot Springs today. Jockey McLaughlin is the latest rider to announce his intention of going to Oaklawu. Favorites were unsuccessful in all the races and the talent had a hard time of it during the afternoon. Nicol Outrides Romanelli and Scores in the Final Stride Bad News Goes to Nashville. Now Orleans, La., February 9. Aside from ttic steeplechase, the card at City Park today had no special features. Ordinary fields were named to go in each of the seven races and they afforded opportunities both for lively speculation and keen competition. The track, which was drying out rapidly, was still heavy and with the improved weather conditions came 'a decided improvement in the attendance. Adesso, Garnish and Double were the winning favorites. The backers of Garnish, who, by the way, accepted a short price about the horse, were given cold chills during the running of the race. Garnish was outpaced for the first half and despite Nicol's efforts was unable to get up. At the paddock gate Chief Hayes had a lead of a half length, with Nicol hard at work on the favorite. The task looked a hopeless one, but Nicol kept persevering. In the last twenty yards Komanelli, on Chief Hayes, drew his whip and in shifting his lines allowed his mount to swerve over toward the inside. This let Garnish up and he won in the last stride by a nose. K. R. Bradley's handicap horse. Bad News, has been shipped to Nashville to join the division of the stable which is being wintered at Cumberland Park. The climate here did not agree with Bad News. He was taken sick a couple of weeks ago with rheumatism and Doctor Keough advised that the horse be shipped to a dryer climate. Running Star, the grey sprinter in the stable of L. V. Bellew, is In a bad way. The Ally took cold after her last race- and developed a severe case of pneumonia. The chances for her recovery arc slim. Double, which is carded for the Ileaslip Cup tomorrow, was worked out an extra mile after his race today. When Censor pulled Tip after the fifth race it was found that lie had broken down during the running. Censor Had been out of commission for some lime and the chances are that lie will now lie retired for good. Owners Are Urged to Report Deaths OWNERS ARE URGED TO REPORT DEATHS. "One of the importai ibtails of turf affairs in which breeders and owners are sadly negligent is reporting the death of horses that die in the stud or while racing," says the Morning Telegraph. "Like many other details of turf management, the breeders and owners are prone to treat tills as a matter of little importance, but such is not the case. "It 'lb not only of vital importance in uiakiug the records complete, but would oftentimes mean a saving to the owner. By the rules of racing, the report of the deatli of a horse is equivalent to a declaration from all engagements. Such declaration cannot be made on the mere published reports of the death of a horse, but only on the written report from the owner. There are good reasons why the published reports cannot be accepted as evidence. A few years ago two horses with names very much alike were stabled at the same track. One of these was killed accidentally during the exercise hours of the morning and the deatli published in the papers. But through the similarity of the names the wrong horse was reported. This was not denied, and no report having been made by the owner, the published accounts were accepted as evidence, and the records fixed accordingly. "Some months later the horse reported dead showed up to fill a stake engagement. The books of the Jockey Club showed that he had been declared from all engagements under the death rule, the records were corrected, but since that time the Jockey Club refuses to act except on the written report of an owner in such cases. "It is especially essential that prompt reports be made at this time, in view of the fact that Volume IX. of the Stud Book is to be produced this year. Every one is interested, or should be, in the accuracy and completeness of this work, and prompt reports In case of the death of a horse will materially aid to this end." Esherin Dies Suddenly: Oakland Officials Order an Autopsy to Determine the Cause ESHERIN DIES SUDDENLY. OAKLAND OFFICIALS 0RDERf AN AUTOPSY TO DETERMINE THE CAUSE. Rumors of the Use of Drugs Lem , Reed the Only Winning Favorite Jockey Williams Is Seriously III. San Francisco, Cal., February 9. The six-year-old bay marc Esherin, by Esher Souora, by Spendthrift, died five minutes after coming out of the fourth race at Oakland this afternoon, and an autopsy has been ordered with the hope of determin- t lng the cause of her sudden and unexpected ending. There are rumors that she might have been drugged, though little credence is given such statements. It was apparent from her running that there was something wrong with her, as she was never dangerous at any stage of the race and fan listlessly. Lcm Reed, in the opening race, was the only successful public choice of the afternoon. Misty's Pride was the medium of a big coup in the sprint race. Leroy Williams, the sensational colored jockey, is seriously ill. .. ' - It Is said here that Dick Williams and his party bet over $5,000 on Ralph Young In poolrooms east of the Rocky Mountains yesterday. Beau Ormonde has been retired Vj the stud. Whether or not these races arc to be run depends, of course, upon the decision of the Supreme Court of this state on the constitutionality of the Rice-Ligon law. That decision is hourly expected. It is the general impression that it will be favorable to the horsemen and preparations are being made for a busy local season. It is expected that Accountant will carry the colors of Captain Harry Brown in the Derby. He is in training at Lexington by Robert Tucker, who won the Derby or 1904 with Proceeds und that of last year with Agile. He also won the Oaks in 1901 Willi Audience. More Rumors from Ascot Park MORE RUMORS FROM ASCOT PARK. "The eliasm at Ascot. Park Is apparently unbridgeable," says the San Francisco Chronicle of Tuesday last. "Judge Hamilton, in a signed communication, states that the Williams stable is under a judicial investigation. He is the presiding judge at Ascot. James Brooks telegraphs that the Williams stable is not uuder investigation. Brooks is the manager at Ascot. It looks as if there is quite a conflict of authority, at Ascot. According to reliable information George Rose, the big stockholder at Ascot, sides with Judge Hamilton. Some developments can be expected in the very near future, as the strained relations of the Ascot racing magnates are a matter of common gossip." Ohio Horsemen Are Hopeful OHIO HORSEMEN ARE HOPEFUL. Columbus, 0., February 9. Harness horsemen from all parts of the state are here' in the interest of a racing law which will permit poolselling within the racetrack intiosurcs. It is claimed that Governor Pattison will not veto such a bill. A measure of this kind was passed by the legislature two years ago. Governor Herrlek vetoed it. This arrayed the horsemen against him in his race against Governor . ... - Pattison last fall. 0 ALEX SHIELDS BELIEVES IN MONTREAL. "A turfman who is taking a keen interest in the Montreal Jockey Club is Alex Shields," says an exchange. "Mr. Shields was born in Scotland, which will be news to a great many of his friends, who think lie is an out and out Canadian. To use ids own words, he was imported to this ceuntry as a yearling, being an infant in arms when his parents moved to Canada. "His fondness for horses was developed while lie was a member of the Toronto Hunt, and his first racing string conistcd of three or four steeplechasers. By ability as a trainer and shrewdness as a business man he went slowly but surely to the front, until now he lias a good racing stable and a plethoric bankroll. Mr. Shields will not only send his horses there to race, but his faith in the success of the row institution is shown by the fact that he lias taken a financial interest in it. He knows Mon-I treal, having ridden in races there years ago, and he realizes that there never was a place more ripe I for a first-class race meeting than Montreal is at I the present time." Identity of the Banished IDENTITY OF THE BANISHED. Gerald Evans, who was ruled off at City Park, is a Chicago man. He was at one time a clerk in Marshall Field's retail store. Later he was a clerk at Washington Park. W. II. Rudolph' is a native of Harrison, Ohio, and was at one time advance agent for Richard Golden, the actor. U. S. Wishard formerly made his home in Indianapolis, Ind. He Is a cousin of Enoch Wishard, who trains the stable of John A. Drake. He is a saddle maker and left his trade for the track when his son, Del Wishard, liecame a jockey. He figured in two transactions that were under investigation at eastern tracks last fall. This Is Anniversary Day at City Park and there Is to be no race shorter than a mile. The City Park track was opened February 11, 1905. Poet Works a Half in 55 at Gravesend: Best Move of the Year in the East-Getting Ready for the Bennings Meeting POET WORKS A HALF IN 55 AT GRAVESEND.' Best Move of the Year in the East Getting: Ready for the Bennings Meeting. New Yorkj February 9. The workwatchers have had their time pieces in. action at Gravesend these past tlireemornings. Wednesday was the first time since the racing season closed that it has been worth while to time a horse, but the Gravesend course Is in such good condition that the horsemen defied the cold and were busy. Superintendent Dunphy ran the scrapers over the track, and It was as smooth as a billiard table afterward. There is a good cushion on the track that a dry freeze will not hurt materially, and the horsemen can see some actual work ahead of them. It was James McLaughlin, who hopes to be a factor at Bennings, that gave work for the split second machines. McLaughlin set his colt Poet down for a half mile, which he covered in 55 fiat. This is more like work than anything seen yet this year. McLaughlin's other horses were sent along at a two-minute gait. He has seven two-year-olds wintering at Garth's farm in Virginia which he will take over at Bennings. In the Bennington lot was First Water, which has not yet gone to John Hynes equine sanitarium in Connecticut. He appeared to be in good condition and should give a good account of himself if he stands the traiulng ordeal. Blondheim, the lightweight rider of the Bennington stable, has returned from New Orleans. At Sheepshead Bay Rowe had his full stable out on the yearling or exercise track. The great Sy-sonby was in the band and made a circuit of the track. He looks like the great horse that he undoubtedly is, was full of life and evidently enjoyed his freedom from the shed and stall. Con Leightou, who handled the: racing stable of W. L. Scott, the Pennsylvania turfman long since dead, has seven useful looking horses at Gravesend. Four are two-year-olds and the others one year older. W. C. Daly, who sold his property near the Gravesend track some tflfte ago, has bought a house in Avenue U and Twelfth street, Homecrest, and will take possession at once. Lally's Owner Visits New York LALLY'S OWNER VISITS NEW YORK. New York, February 9. Captain W. B. Purefoy, owner of Lally, favorite for the Derby to be run at Epsom Downs this year, is here from London on business connected with his theatrical enterprises. He is enthusiastic in his predictions that his colt will win the classic. Captain Purefoy lias his racing stud in County Tipperary, Ireland. "Lally," said Captain Purefoy, "is the nickname of Lionel Monck-ton, a star among the actors of our country. He is one of my best friends. Heucc the name of my colt." . Local News A game of base ball between nines made up oi jockeys and liookmakers will be played in New Orleans tomorrow for the benefit of an old-time ball player. Dave Nicol will appear as captain p the jockeys. Kentucky's Forty-Day Limit Bill KENTUCKY'S FORTY-DAY LIMIT BILL. Frankfort, Ky., February 9.
