BIX OF SEVEN WINNERS AT CITY PARK ABE HEAVILY SUPPORTED. Rain Leaves the Track Sloppy Bcnvolio Works Out for Long Race Ticket Counterfeiters Are Abroad. New Orleans, La., February 13. With nix of the (seven winners heavily supported by the public, the books at City Park this afternoon received a drub; bing that they will remember for some time - to come. Favorites scored in five of the races while Bon Mot, winner of the sixth race, was backed from 10 to 4 to 1. Pat Dunne's share of the spoils came with the victories of Royal Legend and Envoy, while Joseph Pugh added another to his winning score by the victory of Free Bootcr in the second race. Jockey Nicoi, as usual, carried off the riding honors, lie being credited witli two firsts during the afternoon. Threatening weather kept many of the regulars at home. Still the attendance was large enough to keep the seventeen bookmakers who drew in .busy attending to their wants. The rain held off until the sixth race. Then it poured for a few minutes and the truck was soon eovered with water. The going was sloppy witli a good bottom. Presiding Judge Frances Trevelyau was still too ill to be at ills Hst. Benvollo was worked out an extra mile and a sixteenth after his race. This was in the nature of it preparation for the American Turf Association Handicap at three miles, which will be run Saturday. His time for the mile and a half was 'rns,' llie-itvrej smites srft5triUtfie Twr.ialleb "and '4i ! sixteenth 3:43j. He was under restraint all of the last furlong, being eased up to a walk at the end. Bookmaker James Davis cashier was mulcted out of 200 this afternoon. After Capitano won the liftli race a ticket which read $130 to $50 was presented and cashed. About ten minutes later another ticket bearing a similar number and calling for the same amount was presented. Payment on this ticket was refused at first, but when the person brought witnesses who vouched for him and who also saw him make the wager It was paid. On closer examination the first ticket presented was discovered to be a counterfeit. Charges of Trickery Rife at Oakland: Durnell and His Party Are Said to Have Profited Extensively Through Orchan's Victory CHARGES OF TRICKERY RIFE AT OAKLAND. Durnell and His Party Are Said to Have Profited Extensively Through Orchan's Victory. San Francisco, Cal., February 13. Rumors are afloat In connection with the running of the ffariner Durnell horse, Orchan today. Trickery is alleged to have been practiced in order to bring about conditions that enabled ills recent stable connections to consummate a gigantic coup they are generally credited witli having engineered. Reports of his recent lameness and subsequent sale for the ridiculously low price of $500 to Harrx Stover, are said to have been circulated witli a view of inllueucing the market in his next start. It is conceded that the Ossary horse's backers got unusually profitable odds about him and may have mulcted poolrooms throughout the country out of large sums of money. E. Robinson was universally condemned for his efforts on the favorite. Lady Goodrich. The four-year-old receded in the betting, notwithstanding heavy support. Again five heavily backed favorites were successful. A few of the big layers like George Rose and others are reported to have lost, from $10,000 to $20,000 on the operations of the last two days. The entire ring seems demoralized. Jockey S. Bonner has been granted a license. Clydeo was claimed for $1,800 by J. McCarthy T. C. Williams uiisncctslifniljrbvosietriiis former charge, Theo Case, to $1,300. The horse was retained by bis owners. Ticienor & Co. will ship their "entire stable of fourteen. Bookmakers Keep Money at Crescent: Big Store, Sparsely Supported, the Only Winning Favorite-Vagabond at 50 to 1, the Surprise BOOKMAKERS KEEP MONEY AT CRESCENT. Big Store, Sparsely Supported, the Only .Winning Favorite Vagabond at 50 to 1, the Surprise. New Orleans, La., February 13. The "Kilties," famous Canadian baud helped to draw u. big attendance to the old track this afternoon despite the threatening weather. The sport was good, close finishes being the general rule. Just after the finish of the fifth race a heavy rain fell leaving the track muddy. This occasioned a change in form calculations and Sincerity Belle and Aurumaster, neither of which finished in the money, found most support Kickshaw found the going most to his liking and out gained Bravery. The surprise, of the afternoon was Vagabond's victory in the second race with odds of 50 to 1. The horse is one of the lot that Haymau has turned over to John Lowe, who succeeded "Dick" Wutklus as trainer. Big Store was the only successful favorite during the afternoon and his victory did not prove costly to the twenty-three liookmakers, since he was not heavily backed. S. C. Hildreth's Witfull will be shipped here in a few days to be bred to Major Daingerfield. Mosc Goldblatt has announced the latter's racing career terminated and will shortly place him In the' stud. Shipments to Hot Spriugs continue. Departures today included C. Schawacker with nine horses, and J. J. Greely witli three. John Lowe has decided to race at Oaklawn and before that meeting begins, will ship Luretta and two others belonging to him, and five owned by M. L. Haymau to the Vapor City. In the Hayman lot will be Legatee, Vagabond and Leonard Joe Haymau. Hot Springs Poolrooms Will Not Close: Agree to Continue Operations during Oaklawn Meeting-Sheriff and Mayor Are Hands Off HOT SPRINGS POOLROOMS WILL NOT CLOSE. Agree to Continue Operations During Oaklawn Meeting Sheriff and Mayor Are Hands Off. Hot Springs, Ark., February 13. Unless Dan Stuart and John Condon are stronger in local influence than they now appear to be, the several poolrooms of this town, with the possible exception of the Southern Club in which Stuart is interested, will remain open during the meeting at Oaklawn. This was agreed upon at a meeting of the managers of all rooms except the Southern this afternoon. In former years the rooms closed during the progress of racing at the local tracks, but the, published statements of John Condon and his confreres that the local situation was of little moment and that the Oaklawn track would be operated indefinitely, irrespective of any faction or its Interests caused the room managers to take action. The rooms are enjoying good patronage just now and the managers take the ground that it Is unreasonable lu the racetrack managers to ask them to give way , indefinitely.. Sheriff Williams, ls te real power bchlad the throne here, said today that he would not ask the poolroom men to close, neither would he lend his official or private Influence "to this end, arguing that it was out of his jurisdiction and of a purely municipal order. Mayor Belding, when interviewed, was even more emphatic than the sheriff. He said: "You can say for me that In this matter I am bauds off. I will refuse to use my influence, either personal or official, to close the poolrooms or aid either faction. So far as I am concerned the poolroom men can remain open as long as their business is legitimate in this state and as long as they pay their annual licenses." How it Feels to be a Racing Judge HOW IT FEELS TO BE A RACING JUDGE. The four judges at New Orleans Messrs. Trcvel-yan. Murphy, Bryan and McDonald were recently asked "how does it feel to be a racetrack judge." The answer of each is an Indication that they are most fearful of the criticism attending the placing of horses in a close finish. They are unanimous In expressing the feeling that no matter how accurate their judgment, there are bound to be many in the throng of spectators who will ever hold the opinion that the placing was incorrect. Each has little apparent regard for the opinion of that element which may le designated as "scolders" and which gathers after each close finish to deride or applaud the decision, the trend of their comment being always intluenced by the wagers they have made. The confidence of the fair-minded among the race-goers and these arc in the majority is what the judge strives for. Each of these gentlemen confesses that a close finish grates on his nerves. Judge Murphy says "it isn't what happens, but what may happen." Judge Trevelyan says he can sympathize with the Kentuckian who shouted "scatter, scatter," when be was asked to preside in the stand and saw a field of horses charging down to him like a line of cavalry. Judge McDowell says "many' a time in a head and head jumble at the wire I have wanted to faiut, but have -refrained -from doing so. It would not look well in public." Judge Bryan says that the placing of the horses at the finish does not have for him the worry that attends the meting out of discipline. Trainer Rowe's Quarters TRAINER ROWE'S NEW QUARTERS. The Castletou bred tw;o-year-olds in the string which Jimmy Bowe is handling for James R. -Keene at Sheepshcad Bay are declared by New York turfmen to be "the best looking lot of youngsters on Long Island." There are thirty, five of these two-year-olds, the names and breeding of which were published in Daily Racing Form of February 1. They are reported to be in the best of health- and winter condition. This is the second winter traiuer Bowe has speut at the Bay since Mr. Keene gave up the Brookdale Farm and he now has everything fixed up so that he misses none of the comforts of the farm. "He lias just completed a house for himself near the stables, which is by all odds the best and most comfortable to be found at any track. One splendid room is set aside for Mr. Keene's use when he visits the bam. The house is steam heated and lighted by electricity throughout. There is a good house for the stable boys in the rear of the main stable that is perfect in all that pertains .to the comfort and accommodation of the lads. System is Bad in registrar's Office SYSTEM IS BAD IN REGISTRAR'S OFFICE. In the matter of allowing ami recording names for horses, there is a lack of system, If not gross carelessness in the office of Registrar Wheeler. The latest instance is reported from Memphis. Among the two-year-olds in the string of J. O. Keene there Is a bay filly by Star Ruby Wi-Nc-Ma. Mr. Keene asked that the name Fantana be registered for her. He received notification that this selection had been allowed and registered. There is now a three-year-old by the name of Fantana. It is the grey filly by First Mate Pomona, which raced last year in the colors of George Holle. la the bara of C. R. Ellison at Memphis there Is a two-year-old chestnut tilly by George Kessler Aunt Tessa (the dam of Ram's Horn), which was allowed the name of Rollicking Girl by the registrar. In the string of James R. Keene the filly by KingstonDuchess Caroline is also called Rollicking Girl. There are now two three-year-olds under the name Red Ruby. One Is the buy colt by Star Ruby Firenzcta. The other is the bay filly by Rubicon Ramlet, by Azra. For purposes of distinction in its charts, Dally Racing Form was compelled to affix II. to tlie name of the. latter. Kiamesha and Kla-mesha II. is another illustration of this unwarranted condition. Then there are the cases of Gossiper II., Mohawk II.. Happy Jack II., Bummer II., Maxette and Maxetta, Alamausor and Almanzor, Monia and Moais, aad scores of others which are siaiply poison to the race-going public in the confusion created by their similarity. When the registrar allows a name lu duplicate lie is violating the third section of Rule 30 of the Jockey Club's rules of racing, which reads: "No name that has been employed during the previous five years, either in the stud or on the turf, shall be duplicated. Nor can a name be claimed for any horse not registered as a foal." The committee of the Jockey Club which is giving Its attention to the supervision and publication ot Volume IX of the Stud Book, would do well to set Registrar Wheeler and his clerks aright in the nomenclature department. A word or two of caution to the proofreader on the Racing Calender about the mistakes ia the list of reglstred foals of 1304 Is also iu order. Page 2 DAILY RACING FORM ISSUED EVERY DAY. St. Amant, Derby Winner in 1904, Top Weight for the City and Suburban. The acceptances for the Spring Handicap and the fact that the colt Lally had been made the favorite in the early betting for the Derby, were the most important items of the latest English sporting exchanges received in this country. Lally is by Am-phion out of Miss Hoyden and is said to have shown great development during the winter months. As a two-year-old he did well and was reckoned a top-notcher. The Lincolnshire on .March 'Si is the first of the big handicaps on the schedule and the line list of fifty figures in the event. Top weight of 12G pounds has been allotted to Desmond's Gift, a four-year-old filly of a fine turn of speed, but with an unknown recor.d. Velocity, the Cambridgeshire winner, and a stable companion of Desmond's Gift, has been burdened with 110 pounds and should show to advantage. Roseate Dawn is leniently treated with 117 pounds and Catty Crag with a pound less although it is 27 pounds more than the latter carried a twelvemonth ago when he was so flukily beaten by Sanso-vino. Uninsured is given a distinct chance with 101 IKMiids, as it is seven pounds less than he carried to victory in 1!)04, and it "may be remembered that he ran well in the Cambridgeshire last fall. With only 07 pounds up. Wolfshall looks to have a good chance, as he meets Uninsured upon four pounds better terms than when beaten three-quarters of a length two years ago and he still retains his form. Csardas, who was so consistently backed by the public for the event last year, looks attractive with i)S pounds, that is, provided he goes to the post tit and well. Caravel, now a six-year-old .and the filly which gave such promise as a two-year-old, has been given 10(1 pounds. Other starters worthy of note are Williams Hill, 04 pounds, and Sir Daniel, with ,0!) pounds. St. Amant, the Derby winner of 1904, heads the list in the City and Suburban to be run April 25 and over the Epsom Course, where the colt gained renown. He has been allotted 130 pounds and from the way the handicapper lias disposed of his job to pick the winner will be no easy task. But St. Amant should take care of all those in bis immediate vicinity in the handicap. Ambition has IK! pounds and as this is seven pounds more than he failed under last year, lie should be harmless. Sweet Mary, with 03 pounds, has a good chance. She is the best of. the three-year-olds in the event and likely to come early to band and should experience no difficulty in defeating her contemporaries Ath-league. 02; Achilles, SS; Succory, SC.; Royal Lass, 02; The White Knight, 84; Galloper, 84 and General Killian. 100. though the last named is reputed very smart. Sir Daniel has shown good form on this ground before and with OS pounds should be well in the running. Lady Hanora, 01; Silver Streak, 103; Outbreak. 100.; Holme Lacy, 107; Commune, 100, and Mimay, 101, seem nicely treated. The Kenipton Park Jubilee of $15,000, on May 12, has been well patronized, the post of honor going to Vedas, with 120 pounds. Ambition, 122, and Fermoy C, 124, which battled out the finish for the corresponding event last year, will have their inning again. Plum Centre, with 117 pounds, seems nicely weighted, but hardly a handy horse for the course, and Velocity, with 117; Silver Streak, 112, and Chauser, 114, seem well handled. Athi, with 102 pounds in the saddle, considering that he is reckoned the smartest of the three-year-olds in the race, is let off rather light. Notes of the Turf NOTES OF THE TURF. J. B. Cushing now has Hans Wagner at Oakland. Jockey Johnny ReitT is to be married to Miss Den-man in France today. Red Light is back in the stable of S. M. Williams. He claimed him for $810 at Oakland Tuesday. No one lias leased the Overland track as yet. The outlook for a meeting at Denver this year is not bright. Jockey E. Walsh is not riding lieeause of lameness as the result of road work in the effort to keep down his weight. Those brackets Vagabond got in the second race at Crescent Park yesterday were his first. It was his twelfth start. He was in the money twice last year, his earnings being $473. The Family Club Handicap will be one of the features at Oakland Saturday. The Guust Stakes will be another. Both have $1,500 added. To the winner of the handicap, the Family Club will present a silver cup. The Hamilton Jockey Club has announced three stakes, to be decided at its spring meeting, June '5 to 10 the Tuckett Selling Stakes, $1,000, for three-year-olds and over, at one ond one-sixteenth miles; the Royal Hotel Stakes, $S00, for two-year-olds, five furlongs, and the Spring Brewery Stakes, $1,000. a handicap for three-year-olds and over, at one mile. t Answers to Queries ANSWERS TO QUERIES. "BiG Bill" Knapp's Contract "BIG BILL" KNAPP'S CONTRACT. "Big Bill" Knapp, who is a good business man as well as a skilled pilot of horses, has at last affixed his name to a contract for the coming summer season. With millionaire owners bidding for his services the little man held out for a long time before making his decision. It is reported on reliable authority that he will again ride for U. It. Bradley. In accepting Bradley's terms, which are said to be .$10,000 for first call, Knapp turned down James It. Keene and the chance of riding the great Sysonby. Keene would go as high as ?8,000 but no higher. Knapp was acknowledged to be the best rider at New York last season and" it was while in Bradley's employ that he made the big hit. Bradley is a westerner. On his way to California after the closing of racing at Gotham, Knapp stopped over at Chicago and called on Bradley. When Bill left the Bradley house he was $2,500 richer. The money was a gift, Knapp having been paid in full previously for his services of the summer. San Francisco Examiner. Baron Finot's "General Purpose" Horse BARON FINOT'S "GENERAL PURPOSE" HORSE. The following story is told of Baron Fiuot, the aged patron of steeplechasing in France, who died a few days ago. Baron Flnot was standing on the balcony of his club in the Rue Hoyale with one of his friends, who said to him: "Is that your carriage waiting at the door? It appears to me that It is your horse between the shafts." "Yes, that is Persano," repled the Baron, "and I shall win a descent steeplechase with him at Vincennes tomorrow." And, sure enough, Baron Finot drove up to Vincennes racecourse on the following day in the same carriage, drawn by the same horse, and when Persano had been unharnessed, rode him easily to victory.
