CONDON IS TRYING HARD TO CLOSE HOT SPRINGS ROOMS. John A. Payne Said to Have Been Appealed to Good Card for the Opening Day at Oaklawn Radtke Arrives. Hot Springs, Ark., rebrnary 10. The Oaklawn meeting which logins tomorrow may yet run its allotted period of thirty-one days without the opposition of open poolrooms. It was said tonight by those in close touch with the situation that an agreement may lie reached whereby the rooms will remain closed during local racing hours. Sheriff "Williams still holds to his policy of "hands off." It is rumored that should an agreement be reached it will be through the offices of the Interstate News Company, which acts as a common carrier for the transmission of race news from the various tracks. John A. Payne, who is the head of the company, is said to have leen prevailed upon to order a suspension of Ins service to the poolrooms should the managers insist upon keeping open during racing hours here. If the room managers carry out their open door policy it will mean a big loss to John Condon and the Oaklawn Club. The Missouri Club management announced tonight that they would suspend operations beginning tomorrow. Tliis is the first poolroom that has intimated that it was willing to give Oaklawn right, of way. John Wolff, manager of the Arkansas Club poolroom, when asked regarding his future policy, said: "The Arkansas Club is not aggreslve in the matter. We are on the fence. We will follow the. majority and abide by their action. If they elect to remain closed no one will have to request :s to close our doors. ' On the other hantf :-if Uft?deci(J6 to keep open shop during the term of racingat Oaklawn the Arkansas Club will operate on. 'all races and deal the usual big limit for all players." Secretary Stebbins' card for the opening day filled better than the management expected. 'Especially "noticeable was the number which accepted the weights in the feature event. The Oaklawn Handicap. The horses representing the Memphis contingent in the event were on the ground early, while those of Ed Trotter and the Hayman-Lowe confederacy arrived from New Orleans during the course of the afternoon. Not more than thirty of the older division have arrived thus far from Memphis, but this number is strongly augmented by about five carloads from the Crescent City. There are two-year-olds galore, however, with J. O. Keene and Louis Cella the most strongly represented. Radtke, who will undoubtedly prove himself the star among the pigskin artists, arrived today from New Orleans. With him on the same train came L. Wilson, J. Dennison and McLaughlin. Ilelgesen and Cherry have been on the ground for several days. Many improvements have been made since the last winter meeting and the plant in every particular now represents an up-to-date one. Considerable attention has been paid to the track proper, but for the opening day the going promises to be only good, on account of recent rains. Fenian Proves to be a Real Good Thing: Five Favorites Win at Crescent Park-Row over a Ticket Claimed by Frank Lanterman FENIAN PROVES TO BE A REAL GOOD THING. Five Favorites Win at Crescent Park Row Over a Ticket Claimed by Frank Lanterman. New Orleans, La., February 10. Willi the success of five of the six favorites at Crescent Park this afternoon, the large crowd In attendance left the old track thoroughly satisfied with their afternoon's entertainment. Apart from the success of the choices the racing had a dash and snap to it that was positively exhilerating. All of the races furnished driving finishes. Jockeys Sewell and J. Martin stood out over their fellow riders, the former having the mount on three and the latter on two of the winners. A real old fashioned "killing" was made In the first race over the victory of Fenian, a T. P. Hayes cast-off, now owned by Rice Bros. As good as GO to 1 was posted aliout Fenian and the money went out in bunches, the horse being backed down to 10 to 1 at post time. A local councilman named Dixon was the biggest winner over the race, reports having it that he won over $10,000. A row was precipitated in the ring after the third race when Frank Lanterman discovered that a ticket for a bet of $100 he had made on'Salvisa at C to 3 had been lost. He had the ticket stopped In the book in which the bet had been made, but a man soon presented the pastelioard and insisted lie had made the bet. The bookmaker who took the bet and the blockman who handled the money Insisted It was Lanterman's ticket. It was the only bet made at 0 to 5. Several people vouched for the good reputation of the man who held the ticket,- but the money was finally turned over to John Paderas, chief of detectives, to-be held subject to the decision of the track officials'. W. Miller Gets Applause at Oakland: Gives Yo San Masterly Ride-W. Knapp Makes a Poor Showing on Favorites W. MILLER GETS APPLAUSE AT OAKLAND. Gives Yo San a Masterly Ride W. Knapp Makes a Poor Showing oft Favorites. San Francisco, Cal., February 10. Favorites fared badly at Oakland today, Knapp's poor horsemanship accounting for two of tliein Oronte and Hammer-away. His dilatory tactics on the TIchenor colt were freely criticised. With W. Miller up, Yo San performed like a stake mare. Great applause greeted the successful new-comer on his return to the judges' stand after the finish. F. W. Doss advanced the selling price of Critical from $700 to $1,100 after his victory in the mile race, but the Plaudit horse was bought in by his owners. O. F. Hume bid up Yo San $300 above her entered price of $000, MeCafferty retaining the mare with the additional $5 advance. J. F. Clifford claimed Avonalis yesterday for $S25. A. W. McKenzie, a director in the Ontario Jockey Club, was a visitor at the track today. Pelham was claimed out of the fifth race by W. M. Caine for $025. Miller is to ride Valeureuse in the Ounst Stakes tomorrow. Seven Favorites Beaten: Blue Friday for Form Followers at City Park SEVEN FAYORITES BEATEN. BLUE FRIDAY FOR FORM FOLLOWERS AT CITY PARK. St. Tammany's Race Under Investigation Custus and Sobell a Winning Combination First Time Through the Field. New Orleans, La., February 10. With the defeat of seven favorites, followers of form had their troubles at City Park this afternoon: Some of the winners dropped from the most unexteeted quartern and the victor' of one, St. Tammany, will come in for official investigation tomorrow. Judge Murphy was anything other than pleased at the reversal shown by St. Tammany, and owner Strode will be called to account for the running o this horse. He has been notified to appear before the judges to make an explanation of matters and it may be that he will be able to give some reasonable excuse for the remarkable improvement over St. Tammany's effort on Wednesday, when he finished List in the sixth race, which was won by Debar. The high winds dried out the track and the going, although slow, was In fairly good condition, as the time made in some of the races show. U. Z. De Arman surprised himself today by winning two races, one with The Don and another with Jack Adams, which were at remunerative odds and ran practically unbacked by their owner. Custus, making his first start through the field, ridden by Sobell, a beginner as a cross-country rider, won the steeplechase. Custus fenced well, and ran a good game race. Sobell was given a rousing reception by his fellow riders when he returned td the jockeys' room after the race. He is a fearless rider and with little more practice may .develop into a -gtarcropjntrjrJockey. W.ower, president of the Texas Bree'dwsAss'5' ciatioir, ris going into breeding on an extensive scale. While here last week he purchased four mares which were shipped to Dallas, Texas. Among the lot were Miss Shylock, Bettie May and Oak Cliff. Jack Adler, the announcer, is back in New York after two months at New Orleans. When someone asked him a day or two ago If Captain Jim Williams was entertaining a serious notion that Phil Finch will be able to whip Sysonby in' handicaps next his Goldfinch Phillstia gelding, but in my opinion Phil Finch is simply a good selling plater. He carries big weight and wins at New Orleans because there is nothing in the mature division of any account. He is really no better horse than Orly and everyone hereabouts knows that Orly is only a plater. Phil Finch cannot, you may have noticed,' beat any of the best three-year-olds at the Fair Grounds unless the younger horses get all the worst of the weights. Captain Williams will find out soon after his arrival here, that Plill Finch; belongs in overnight races. Alex. Shields' has a . horse by Ormonde, Phil Finch's, daddy's sire, who'wlll eat the Williams horse whole When he tackles him. Ormonde's Right is the horse I mean. I do not believe that there is a racer at New Orleans within fifteen pounds of Ormonde's Right." New Handicap for Belmont Park NEW HANDICAP FOR BELMONT PARK. The Westchester Racing Association announces a new handicap to be run at Belmont Park on Monday, May 28, the first day of the second spring meeting, to be known as the Borough of Queens Handicap, for three-year-olds and upward, with 5,000 added, at a mile and one-sixteenth, to close March 7, the same date as the other fixtures. A specially interesting program will be announced for Decoration Day, May SO, which will Include the Amateur Cup, for gentlemen riders; the Whitney Memorial Steeplechase, with $3,000 added; the Crotona Handicap, for three-year-olds and upward, and the fortieth running of the Belmont Stake, for three-year-olds. This famous race will this year be worth .$25,000 gross. Bennings' Accommodations Scant BENNINGS' ACCOMMODATIONS SCANT. New Orleans, La., February 1C Captain W. E. The superintendent of the Bennings track lias applications for 1,500 stalls. There are accommodations at the track for only COO. Reports Progress at Havana REPORTS PROGRESS AT HAVANA. Andrew Miller, one or the stewards of the Jockey Club, recently received a letter from Secretary A. K. Hernandez, of the New Havana Jockey CItjIi, which tells of the progress in the effort to establish racing at the Cuban capital. The letter, in part, was as follows: "Our enterprise is quite well advanced. We have accomplished a great deal. We have bought the land on one of the finest avenues in the suburbs jf Havana; have concessions from the civil government of the Province of Havana for mutuels and open betting, and are letting out our contracts for the building of a modest, yet sufficient steel structure, for grandstand, clubhouse, etc." Anti-Betting Bill for New York ANTI-BETTING BILL FOR NEW YORK. Albany, N. Y., February 16. A bill to make gambling within racetrack inclosures a felony was introduced today by Senator Cassidy and Assemblyman Lansing. The International Reform bureau, the New York Society for the Suppression of Vice, the Christian Endeavor Society and the Ministerial associations throughout the state are said to be back of the measure. August Belmont to be Reappointed AUGUST BELMONT TO BE REAPPOINTED. The New York Sun states with much posltiveness that Governor Higgins has decided to reappoint August Belmont chairman of the New York State Racing Commission. This decision, it is said, is due to the requests of many influential turfmen. The Sun quotes its informant as follows, with reference to Mr. Belmont: "He has the backing of all turfmen who make a practice of racing in the east, and for that reason he Is believed to be the only man suited for the chairmanship. Racing has become a phenomenal industry in this state under the Belmont regime, and the sport at "present never occupied such a high plane. It was Belmont who took the bull by the horns last year and cut off the revenue from the bookmakers. "Boots" Darnell, to avoid the work watchers at Ascot Park, took Sir Wilfred to Agricultural Park, Los Angeles, recently and worked him a mile and an eighth with a heavy boy up. It is said that the distance was done in 1:54. The colt which was purchased by Oscar Lewisphn at the sale of yearlings from John E. Maddcn's Hamburg Place farm, has developed into a slashing horse, and is in the stable of J. J. Hyland, at Sheepshead Bay, who will prepare him for the coming season. Mr. C. D. Rose, who lias again been elected M.P. for Newmarket in the Liberal interest, was made a member of the Jockey Club in 1801, and his name will always be associated with that famous horse Cyliene, which he sold last year to Mr. W. Bass for 30,000 guineas. Mr. Rose's opponent, Mr. G. H. Verrali, is also an enthusiastic sportsman, whose family has been connected with Lewes races for nearly two centuries. London Sporting Life. Following publication of the acceptances for the English spring handicaps considerable ante-post betting has been recorded with the Lincolnshire Handicap and Grand National Steeplechase engaging the most attention. In the quotations of February 3 Dean Swift, 100, was favorite at 100 to 8, with Sir Daniel, 100, Virgia, 115, and Chelys, 103, following at 20 to 1 each. For the Grand National Comfit, 154, and Itananculus, 154, were equal, favorites at 100 to 7 against each. The Gunner, 150, rating third choice at 100 to 0. At the latter price the American owned candidate, Mr. Cotton's Phil May, 159, received considerable backing, bets of $2,500 to $150 being registered. Answers to Queries ANSWERS TO QUERIES. C. Booker was fined $200 for striking jockey MeDaniel in the closing strides of the fourth race today. Stoessel was bid up from $700 to 1,000 by H. L. Jones and sold to him. The books were hit hard, especially on King of Mist and Starling. The betting was heavy and spirited with fifteen books doing business. Name Your Two-Year-Olds NAME YOUR TW0.YEAR-0LDS. The attention of owners of two-year-olds is directed to the fact that they have only thirteen days -from and including this date in which to name their youngsters without penalty. It is required by the rules of the Jockey Club that a name must be claimed through the office of the Jockey Club for each and every horse on or before the 1st of March of its two-year-old year. If this is not complied with, the horse may be named upon payment of a. fine of $50, if the name is claimed and allowed at least two days before date of starting. Radtke Reminds One of Redfern RADTKE REMINDS ONE OF REDFEHN. "Radtke reminds me much of Redfern the first season the latter rode in the east," said a turfman who has recently returned to New York from New Orleans. "He rides very much after the style of Redfern and is a most promising youngster. He has a good head for such a yonng boy and uses rare judgment in a race. He was not overcome by a case of the 'rattles during the time I saw him ride, lie can whip a horse, too, when it is necessary, though he is not given to the undue use of the persuader. Not all of the winter wonders make good when they come east, as we all know, but Radtke, with anything like a chance, should do well here." Few Declarations Are Expected FEW DECLARATIONS ARE EXPECTED. Declarations from the hig spring handicaps are due Tuesday, but according to late reports from New York, the prospects are that they will be exceedingly light. Up to Thursday there ,had been no declarations from the Brooklyn Handicap and only one from the Suburban. That one was the three-year-old Proposer.
