PRICE 5 CENTS Nab "Ringer" Atoaklawn: Horse Registered with Track Officials as the Rake is Taken Up NAB "EINGER" AT OAKLAWE HORSE REGISTERED WITH TRACK OFFICIALS AS THE RAKE IS TAKEN UP. This Animal Has Good Eyesight The Rake Is Blind in One Eye Owner's Picture in the Rogues' Gallery. Hot Springs, Ark., February 21. Alertness on the part ot the Oaklawn officials probably prevented the running of a "ringer" here. For several days Judge Bryan has been steadily investigating into the ownership and connections of a horse stabled at Oaklawn as The Itake. The horse was brought here from Memphis by Jack Thornby and registered with the secretary as being owned by A. J. Poin-dexter, who, it is alleged, bears an unsavory reputation and is also known by the name of Dexter. On Dexter's arrival. Chief of Detectives Shevlin of this city had him "mugged" and his picture was added to the collection in the local rogues' gallery. The horse registered here as The Itake has perfect eyesight, whereas J. O. Keene, who at one time owned The Rake, declares positively that that animal was nearly blind in his leftiye, having in addition .a cataract and a white film which almost eqvered the entire optic. The horse was taken in charge by Pinkerton officers and placed in one of the stables where he will be guarded pending further investigation. Jack Thornby disclaims connection in the affair and said that while in Memphis about a week ago he was asked to take charge of the horse and ship hitn here. His instructions were to register the horse as The Rake and owned by A. J. Poindexter. These details he attended to.; He is unaware of the horse's identity, he says, further thah what has been told him. A significant incident is that K. K. Farley of "ringing" fame, left Hot Springs suddenly this morning when it became rumored that the judges were investigating the identity of the horse. The feature of the racing here today was the victory of three horses from Jack Kcene's stable, tin severe drubbing the eleven bookmakers got, and Kadtke's riding. The latter was successful on four mounts, making a total of fourteen victories in four days. The Chicago boy is truly in a class by himself here. Fine weather brought out a big attendance, and the siort served to them was, considering the heavy track, close and enjoyable. Williams' Horses Ordered from Track: Arrah Gowan Declared to Have Been "Doped" Action of Oakland Stewards Sufficiently Lenient WILLIAMS' HORSES ORDERED FROM TRACK. Arrah Gowan Declared to Have Been "Doped" Action of Oakland Stewards Sufficiently Lenient. Sail Francisco, Cal., February 21. The California Jockey Club Stewards issued a ruling last night couched as follows: "The entries of the horses of S. M. Williams & Co. will be refused and the horses owned by that firm are ordered from the Emeryville track, the stewards believing that such action is for the best interests of racing." Dr. Masacro, the United States government veterinary surgeon, who had been called in by the local turf authorities to examine the horse Arrah Gowan, stated in his report that unmistakable evidences of "dope" had been found in the animal. This, coupled with the generally inconsistent performances of the Williams horses, caused the action of thei stewards, which was lenient, to say the least. Favorites and outsiders fared equally in this afternoon's successes and, notwithstanding the inclement weather and very muddy track conditions, the racing was fully up to the' standard. Frank Kelly sold Ralbert to "Dick" Williams for $1,000. The latter shortly afterward sold him to C. C. McCafferty. Will Decide the Huguenot Case Today: Brooks Case is to be Heard next Wednesday-Honorable Horsemen Aghast at Ascot Conditions WILL DECIDE THE HUGUENOT CASE TODAY. Brooks Case Is to Be Heard Next Wednesday Honorable Horsemen Aghast at Ascot Conditions. Los Angeles, Cal., February 21. No action was taken in The Huguenot "doping" case today.. .1. J. McCafferty asked Judge Hamilton until tomorrow to tile his defense. McCafferty denies that he gave the horse a stimulant of any kind and will file affidavits from all his stable help that nothing was given to the horse by them. The subject is a matter of keen interest among horsemen here. Dr. V. V.. 1). Morrison, who Is assistant state veterinarian. Dr. W. A. Connolly and Dr. Young, have filed affidavits that the horse was suffering from a drug and powerful heart stimulant, but were unable to state when the drug was administered. A decision will, in all probability, be given out tomorrow. This case, coupled with the "doping" of Arrali Gowan at San Francisco, has aroused the indignation of the better class of horsemen here and they hope some decisive action will be taken to completely eradicate this nefarious practice which has lately thrown the siort into disrepute in California. The case of .1. J. McCafferty, C. T. Boots and Henry McDaniel against Manager Brooks is set for hearing on February 2S, when the matter will be thoroughly gone into by the entire board of directors of the Los Angeles Jockey Club. Cataiine was bid up from $400 to $S00 by J. M. Stowe and was sold to him. t The Mackenzie brothers, now racing at Ascot Park under the name of the Kirkfield Stable, and sons of M. The lawyer wired that the paper would publish a retraction and the proceeding was stopped. Lady Navarre Easily Beats De Reszke: Ellison Said to Have Backed His Filly Heavily Little Wanda Gets in Wrong LADY NAVARRE EASILY BEATS DE RESZKE. Ellison Said to Have Backed His Filly Heavily Little Wanda Gets in Wrong. New Orleans, La., February 21. Lady Navarre showed herself to be of genuine Derby caliber when she met De Reszke at his favorite distance, seven furougs, gave him weight in his own going and beat him decisively. All the horsemen who saw her racing in the east have been predicting she would be the one they wuld have to beat in the Derby and her race today indicated as much. She showed line Sliced, raced right along in front with Fargo and Collector Jessup and when Sewell called on her at the three-eighths post, she went away from the others like a flash. C. R. Ellison is said to have backed her heavily throughout the country, although he did not bet much on her here. The filly Little Wanda appeared in the official entries last night, was programmed today' and bulletined on the bookmakers' slates, but betting had progressed on the second race for at least ten minutes before it was. discovered that Bhe was iu a race for colts and geldings. When her ineligibility was discovered, she was, of course, ordered scratched and all bets on the race were declared off. Martin, on Rainland, came dangerously close to fouling Aurumaster in the third race. It became evident in the stretch that the old cripple had it on the favorite. Martin began to bear in and carried Aurumaster to the inner rail, but as Aurumaster won anyhow, no foul was claimed. Willie Shields today received word from jockey Redfern that he would be here prepared to ride by Friday. It is not expected he will be able to do better than 115 pounds. Judge McDowell was back iu the stand today, having recovered from his indisposition of the day before. Make Bets on Race to Test Missouri Law: Presecuting Attorney at Kansas City, However, Refuses to Order Arrests-Officials to Force Case MAKE BETS ON RACE TO TEST MISSOURI LAW. Prosecuting Attorney at Kansas City, However, Refuses to Order Arrests Officials to Force Case. Kansas City, Mo., February 21. The first step to test the constitutionality of the anti-racing law passed at the last session of the Missouri legislature, was taken this afternoon at Elm Ridge Park. One race was decided with the. betting features, but Prosecuting Attorney Klmbrell decided to take no notice of the affair and the matter now remains the same as before the race. Bookmaker Charley Oldham received seven bets and telephoned the same to Kansas City, Kansas, for registration. The bets were made by C. C. Christie, formerly president of the Jockey Club. "They can have all the fake laces they want to," said Prosecuting Attorney Kiuibrell tonight. "1 will pay no attention to the so-called test case, but 1 will wait until spring and if they attempt to give a real race meeting with the betting features. I will see that the law is enforced and they will have plenty of time to test the law then. 1 have consulted with Attorney-General Hadley and Governor Folk and will follow their advice." President Gardner of the jockey club says that the case will be forced into court and that he Is confident that the anti-racing .bill will be declared unconstitutional. Kargut More of a Derby Possibility: Three Winners from Corrigan Stable at City Park Monacodor Ordered Withdrawn Because of Fever KARGUT MORE OF A DERBY POSSIBILITY. Three Winners From Corrigan Stable at City Park Monacodor Ordered Withdrawn Becauso of Fever. New Orleans, La., February 21. Today was Corrigan day at City Park. Three of the afternoon's winners Creel, Kargut and Goldic carried the "green and while sash" to victory. Creel and Goldic were well backed favorites, while a liberal price could always be obtained about Kargut. His victory was something in the nature of a surprise. He was iu with a lot of fast sprinters and the distance was considered a bit too short for this well bred sou af Kinley Mack and Briar Sweet. Kargut is a solid colt built on massive lines and iu all his races here this winter lie gave one the impression that he fancied a long route. He is Mr. Corrlgan's main reliance for the City Park Derby to be run March 17 and is being gradually screwed up for that fixture. On his showing today his chances look second to none. One thing in his favor is that he can run over any sort of a track and if the going- happens to be heavy on Derby day, lie will probably be one jf the choices iu the big race. Mr. Corrigan was not present to witness Kargut's race, which was a splendid effort from a time staudpoint-as the track was sticky and heavy. The early pace was fast and the five and one-half furlongs iu 1:10 marks a good performance. After speculation on the fifth race had been iu progress for some minutes, an order came from the judges to scratch Monacodor and all bets were tie clared off. In his warm-up Monacodor showed none of the life he displayed in his last few races. On his arrival at the paddock the horse appeared distressed and on examination by Dr. Talbot it was found that his temperature was 104. Old Censor again pulled up hobbling on three legs, it seems as though his people ought to retire him. In his races here this winter Censor has been beaten off and he seems to have lost all the speed he so often displayed while racing here iu previous sea-sous. Auu Hill, wiuner of the first race, was ridden with; a bit of peculiar construction. In her previous races this filly has run out on the stretch turn. With the new contrivance jockey Heunessy had no trouble iu keeping her iu today and she won in easy fashion from Miss Jordan. Ohio's Racing Bill is Introduced OHIO'S RACING BILL IS INTRODUCED. Columbus, O.. February 21. The bill by which it is hoped that racetracks in this state can be legally operated has been introduced to the legislature by Senator Pollock. However, the measure will lie of little benefit to any track owner who might desire to conduct a meeting for runners in keeping with modem Ideas as to duration, for it limits racing ou any course ia the state to fourteen days each year and provides that uo meeting shall le longer than six days. There can be no racing before June 1. and none after November 1. AA'hiie the bill has the support of all horsemen, it is clearly for the benefit of the trotters. "The track owners are not worrying over the Lansing-Cassidy bill," said a well known racing man who is conversant with the affairs of the Jockey Club, "for the reason that tlieir present position .Is unassailable. Hail, they continued accepting money from the books, however. Hie shoe would have been on the other foot at present. Any crusade intended to be successful nitist be made against the bookmakers exclusively, aiid they have been operating within the requirements of the law.' It it is Illegal for two men to bet on the; result of a horse race. It is illegal to bet on the outcome of an election, a ball game, a glove light, or any other proposition of this kind. Race track speculation Is made upon a sport that Is clean, well managed and popular. You might just as well begili a crusade against the stock market as' to tackle racing on this line. Poolroom betting Is another thing altogether. Irresponsible persons conduct many of these places, where, young men who cannot afford to bet have a cha,nce to speculate. Patrons of poolrooms so conducted are at the mercy of sharks' who are responsible to nobody but themselves. At the tracks the admission fee alone keeps out the undesirable element and also limits the attendance to persons who can-afford to wager within their means on the results of the various events. The Jockey Club has made the turf a phenomenally successful and popular institution, for the reason that it is composed of men who are above" reproach and who enjoy the complete conlldence of the public." I think that you will lind. that the bill at Albany, win not amount to much under the circumstances." Latonia Town Seeks More Revenue LATONIA TOWN SEEKS MORE REVENUE. Cincinnati, 0., February 21. At their session last night the counclhnen of1 the town of Latonia, Ky.. passed, an ordinance annexing the grounds of the Latonia Jockey Club to the town. The purpose Is said to be to increase the town's tax duplicate and to gain the Income from license on the bars operated-at-the track. The Latonia Jockey Club. It is said, is much opposed to the annexation and will take the matter to the courts. Swindlers Are Caught in New York SWINDLERS ARE CAUGHT IN NEW YORK. Three men are under arrest in New York charged with swindling a business man out of $1,000 with an alleged "wire tapping scheme. They were found in a room on Fulton street in which there were thirty-two telephones, but none of the instruments Was connected with any wires leading from the building. The pictures of all the men are in the rogue's gallery. Wants Race like the American Derby WANTS RACE LIKE THE AMERICAN DERBY. New York, February 21.
