Monet's Sparkling Race at City Park: Third Race is Declared off-Jockey Oregar is Injured-Dwyer to Succeed Cassidy MONET'S SPARKLING RACE AT CITY PARK. Third Race Is Declared off Jockey Oregar Is Injured Dwyer to Succeed Cassidy. New Orleans, La., February 23. Monet, the massive son of Ben Strome racing here in the colors of J. II. McConnick, gave City Park race-goers an exhibition of his quality by beating some very fast sprinters in the fourth race at the new track this afternoon. The card was of general excellence and the crowd, in which Mardi Gras visitors were noticeable, was a big one. Four favorites and second choices won. The third race on the original card was declared off and this left six races to go. Minnie Adams and Kargut scratched out of the third race, which 1 made St. Joseph stand out by himself. Hence the action of the officials in declaring the race off. Jockey Oregar, who had the mount on Tom Morgan, suffered Injuries when that colt bolted over the fence with him at the head of the mile and a quarter chute. The lad landed on one of the track floats, striking it with his back. He was unconscious when picked up. W. Allen was substituted 1 iu his place. Both the stirrup leathers on jockey Morris' saddle broke while riding Florence May in the fifth race and he was forced to pull up. Morris, by the way, arrived from his home' in Chicago this morning, ; where he has been spending a few weeks with ids ' parents. . Bookmaker Bob Turner arrived from New xork ' this morning and will cut in at City Park tomorrow. ; Richard Dwyer will, it is understood, take starter Cassidy's place when the latter leaves for Bennings. Suspension of Nicol Riles Phillips: Orders a Car and Says He Will Take Fred Cook's Stable to Oaklawn SUSPENSION OF NIC0L RILES PHILLIPS. Orders a Car and Says He Will Take Fred Cook's j Stable to Oaklawn, New Orleans, La., February 23. Chagrined at the '. action f the judges in suspending jockey Nicol for rough riding in the" first race yesterday, trainer : William Phillips of Fred Cook's stable announced I his intention this morning of shipping his entire I stable to the Oaklawn track. Hot Springs. Phillips wired Secretary Stebbins asking for twenty stalls, . , lie has also ordered a car. The chauces are, say some of his close acquaintances, that when Phillips , thinks the matter over, he will change his mind. ; Jockev Nicol has been given great latitude by the . officials at City Park this winter. On a number of occasions he lias resorted to rough tactics In an endeavor to win and about three weeks ago his t . work became so rough that it was found necessary to set him down for one week. There Is no question . as to the lad's honesty, but he has certainly developed into one of the roughest riders in tue west. Southern Cross Wins in a Canter SOUTHERN CROSS WINS IN A CANTER. New Orleans, La., February 23. The Crescent Park card offered little today, the intended feature race, a handicap at five furlongs having dwindled down to practically a two-horse race. All the "wise money" showed on Southern Cross and he won In a canter from Van Ness, which had some trouble in beating the SO to 1 chance T. B. Zero for second place. It was a bad race for Van Ness. C. R. Ellison's Lancastrian was in a soft spot in the third race and won the easiest kind of a race. Fenian, the horse on which the big killing was made last week, beat Gallant a length for second place. Eddie Tribe, who is helping A. B. Dade do the starting at the Fair Grounds, today received a letter from the Overland Park Racing Association asking him to officiate as starter at the Denver summer meeting; Tribe did the starting there last year. He will accept. L. A. Cella Is in deseperate straits for a rider at Hot Springs and has been wiring to his brother Charles here to secure him one. He wanted either Robbins or Jack Martin, neither of whom is available, and Charles is trying to get him to buy the contract on Hayes, who is riding for "Texas" Smith. Hayes is a promising youngster, about the most likely at the track, but whether a deal will be made or not is still undecided. Okland Form Chart 1 ; ' . ' ; j '. : I I . , , ; . t . . The stewards at Oakland have started an inquiry into today's poor showing of Orclian in the fifth race won by Nine Spot. Harry Stover and jockey Loague, respectively owner and rider of the former Darnell horse, were called upon for an explanation. Presiding steward E. C. A heavy track under clear skies and an interesting card, brought the usual big crowd to the racetrack tliis afternoon.
