XII. yp. 64. CHICAGO, FRIDAY, MARCH 16, 1906. PRICE 5 CENTS Support for Lotus Eater: Morris Candidate for Crescent City Derby is Being Backed SUPPORT FOR LOTUS EATER. MORRIS CANDIDATE FOR CRESCENT CITY DERBY IS BEING BACKED. Rickey Will Be a Starter in City Park Derby No Chance for Fast Tracks New Orleans Gossip. New Orleans, T.a., March 15. In tlie ante-post betting on the Crescent City Derby Lotus Hater developed considerable support today and the Morris candidate Is now a close second choice to Lady Navarre at 3 to 1. The largest single bet was $300 ar 4 to 1, hut there was much small money taken at the same figure preceding the cut. Lotus Eater was sent a mile today In 1:51. lie ran in the middle of the track whore the going was very heavy. He worked sluggishly, as usual. Ben Hodder was given an easy mile in 1:51 J, well to the outside where the footing was better. The prices prevailing- tonight are: Ben Hodder, 4 to 1; Guiding' Star, C (o 1; James Reddiek, C to 1; Loins Eater, .". to 1; Hallowmas, 20 to 1; Security, 0 to 1; Holloway, 100 to 1; Macy Jr., 150 to 1; Lady Navarre, 11 to 5; Disobedient, S to 1. The weather today was not of the sort to encourage hopes for a fast track for Saturday, but Superintendent Myers promises to have it in better shape than any one now anticipates. St. Valentine's race today was quite an improvement over some of his recent efforts. The last time Cigarlighter met him in heavy going he easily disposed of him, but St. Valentine ran Cigarlighter ir.zy tr.Jnp. lift vo a tout the -bout beaked h'rt-which has won here this winter and every book in the ring stood a hard wallop when he finished in front. Tolly Prim would undoubtedly have won the fifth race had not, Smith on Third Alarm carried her to the inside rail and then forced her to pull up. She was winning when the incident occurred and it looked as though Smith made little effort to keep his mount off. Rickey, sent here by Sim Diemel from New York to run in the City Park Derby Saturday, showed his heels to a fair field of three-year-olds In the third race today. He was ridden by Nicol, conceded weight to everything in the race and won all the way, beating Daring out a length at the finish. Two favorites .managed to win. T. P. Hayes furnished to of the winners in Principla and Incubator. D. Austin and Nicol each rode two winners. "Doc." Welgemuth, superintendent of the City Park plant, promises to have the track in good shape by Saturday, provided no more rain falls. If there is good footing the Derby starters will number at least eight. Jack Phillips will ship 'Jack Dolan east early next week. He will go In James II. McCormick's care and will rest up at Sheepshead Bay until the opening of the Aqueduct meeting. Jack Dolan's first race in the east will be in the Carter Handicap. At the conclusion of the Aqueduct meeting ho will be shipped to Toronto. Fred Cook's English Lad, together with a dozen brood mares has been shipped to his farm near St. Louis. In the lot was Beautiful Bess which gave promise early last spring of developing into a sensational filly. She won her first out and then trained off. George nolle's Jean Bereand colt, Karama, which was taken sick with fever about ten days ago died this morning at City Park. Karama was rated by horsemen as the fastest two-year-old in training here this winter. In one of his trials he went a half mile around the turn in 47J. Several flattering offers for Karama were refused by his owner. Quinn Brady, recently purchased by J. P. May-berry, is on the ailing list. The colt pulled up sore after his last workout and will have to be let lip on for a few weeks. James Milton, one of starter Cassidy's assistants, left tonight for Washington. He will erect a starting gate at Bennings and will be prepared to school horses until the meeting opens there. Cassidy also has men schooling horses at Belmont Park, Jamaica, Gravesend and Sheepshead Bay. Francis Trevelyan has been asked by the Ontario Jockey Club to officiate at Toronto as one of the stewards and he will likely accept. Mr. Trevelyan will go from here to Lexington, then to Louisville where he will remain until Toronto opens. He will sail for England on June 9 and will remain abroad until late next fall. Outsiders Help Oakland Bookmakers OUTSIDERS HELP OAKLAND BOOKMAKERS. San Francisco, Cal., March 15. The lookmakers are, figuratively speaking, making hay while the sun shines. The present bountiful harvest of successful outsiders has enabled them to gather in much If not all of their losses. Only two favorites, lK)th lukewarm, rewarded their backers this afternoon. Barney Schreiber left tonight for Los Angeles to close up ids establishment at Ascot Park. "Kid" Weller also departed for the oast via Los Angeles and New Orleans. His final destination being Cincinnati. City Park Form Chart CITY PARK FORM CHART. NEW ORLEANS, LA., March 15, 1906. Ninety-first day. Favorites Win All Races at Oaklawn: Radtke Rides Three, Cherry Two and Sewell One-Much is Expected of Chancellor FAVORITES WIN ALL RACES AT OAKLAWN. Radtke Rides Three, Cherry Two and Sewell One Much is Expected of Chancellor. Hot Springs, Ark., March 15. Favorites won all the races at Oaklawn today and the bookmakers returned from the course with doleful faces. Ed. Trotter furnished a pair of winners in Excitement' and Tristan Shandy that played havoc with the bank rolls of the layers.. Both were ridden by Cherry, who is beginning to show Improving form as a rider. Radtke again carried off the riding, honors by piloting to victory Merllngo, Maxim Gorky and Cottage Maid. Sewell landed the other winner. He left tonight for New Orleans to pilot Lady Navarre in the Crescent City Derby Satur day; He will resume riding at Oaklawn Monday. Small fields were the rule today, but the contests were keen and, considering the bad weather, a fair crowd was on hand. Arthur Worley announced today that he will, dispose of all his horses here. He is to train this year the horses comprising the string of Dr. J. Grant Lyman. Joe Yeager stood to win $25,000 had Margaret Morris defeated Maxim Gorky. Chinn & Forsythe started Chancellor in this race but the colt was unfit, ran green nnd was never in the hunt. He will improve on this running and beat the winner of today's race with ease when he learns what is wanted of him. It is reported that an offer of $10,000 was refused for this youngster. It is now understood that the plant will be dismantled and the property cut up into building lots. Notes of the Turf NOTES OF THE TURF. Roseben is doing good work at Gravesend these days. Beginning Monday next racing at Crescent Park will begin at 2:30 each afternoon. The public would like it better if the bookmakers at Oaklawn would lay more liberal place and show odds. Nealon will not be a starter in the four mile race at Oakland tomorrow. -He was cut down in his last race. A tax of $50 per head is now assessed against all horses that are brought into Germany from any other country. The New York Sun says: "Joe Yeager will have no horses this year, but will devote his time exclusively to speculation." In one of the London clubs recently a wager of $50,000 to $225 was laid against the double event of Holme Lacy for the Lincoln Handicap and Gladiator for the Liverpool Grand National. It has been decided by the stewards of the English National Hunt that B. F. Clyde's Dathl, disqualified several weeks ago after coming in first in a race in England, was properly disqualified and they have dismissed the appeal lodged with them. In London racing circles it is announced that Lord Gerard, who won $15,000 on the match at Sandown Park which resulted in one of the riders being warned off, has presented the money to the Bentinck memorial fund, from which indigent jockeys ami their relatives are given aid. "Not having seen or heard of Prophet III for some little time, his Grand National bubble has exploded," says Warren Hill in London Sporting Life, "and it was plain from the first that he was not the sort for a Grand National." "Out East a tale is traveling its way which says that the old man of Santa Anita is in his dotage; that he Is almost totally blind; that the race course will know him never again, and that the last of the great breeding establishments of California is to be broken up" says a writer in the San Francisco Examiner. "I found "Lucky' Baldwin attending to the onerous and numerous calls of his immense land holdings, his brain as clear for the accumulation of dollars as in the days when he was getting the nickname of 'Lucky.' His complexion is like a babe's and his eyes, which have troubled him for ten months, are almost normal, lie was almost in-hulled when I asked him if he intended breaking up his stud. Now, where did you get that, boy? he querulously queried. What put such a notion into' your head? Go down there to Hie barns and look at that bunch of yearlings and see if you'd quit breeding. You'll find some Cruzados sucklings there that would keep you in the business. No, not business the fun of the thing. That's what I breed for. I want to have good race horses come off this ranch. I've had some good ones, too, haven't I? and the eyes took on a twinkle. ''Even now, at his age, he Is striving to breed a great stallion to take the place of Grlnstead, Rutherford and Emperor of Norfolk. . lie sent ten Emperor mares and bred them to Watercress with the idea that he might get a great sire. He bred La Goleta to Tiie Bard in tiie east with the same idea. The American blood for me, he said. It has won me many and .many a race and I don't believe lu sending abroad and paying a high price for a sire when I can get such combinations as Watercress and Lexington right here at home. How can you beat that, son? It's tiie best. "I asked him the name of the best horse lie ever owned. 'Why, boy, if I told you -you'd laugh. It was that lilly Slnaloa', he said. 'Yes, that brown filly. Better than any of them she was. Better than Emperor of Norfolk? Yes. Better than Mollie McCarty? Yes. Better than Los Angeles? Yes. Because she could run faster and pack weight, too. She took up a big, heavy burden, I don't remember how much, but it was more than 120, and worked a mile and a quarter at Monmouth Park, I think it was, in 2:01. That was a second faster than the record. Some of the racing officials in the East knew of it and they offered to get up a special stake at a mile and a quarter the next spring for Sinaloa and Mr. Haggin's Salvator. I left her In the east that winter just for the stake and Albert Cooper let her die from pneumonia. She was the fastest and the gamest one of them all, son, and you needn't smile. There was only one of her. " 'You asked me about Mollie McCarty. She was a good mare, all right, and if the track had been right that day in Louisville when she ran the great match with Ten Broeck she would have beaten bim sure. She didn't run in my name in that race, but I bought her-from Mr. Winters before she left California to go east for the match. You know that was the biggest race we'd had since the old-time matches at four miles. Mollie was not herself that day, and the climate killed her chances. Bud Doble and his partner, Conley, arranged that match and I'll tell you now that the gate money was evenly cut into three parts, one-third going to each horse and one-third to the promoters. The race itself was for blood, however. " 'That gave Mollie such a black eye in the East that they culled her the California plug. She was in a cup race at Chicago afterward and on her I won the biggest bet of my turf career. That's what I'm getting to. Nobody thought anything of her and the whole soutli was crazy over a mare called Janet, from Kentucky. She was the hottest kind of a favorite and the Southerners bet their suspenders on her. I had Clara D. in the same race and she could have won It, I believe, but I wanted Mollie to show herself. She just galloped over Janet, my son,- and I took just $03,000 out of the auction pools. That was the heaviest bet 1 ever collected. There were others close to it, but that was the top one. " 'I remember one fine old gentleman who had a silk hat on snatching it off his head and smashing it on the picket fence when Mollie came galloping home. 'I ain't got money enough left for a ticket back to Kentucky,' he yelled, 'but I love a good race boss wherever I see one, and that mare's it.' I said, 'My friend, I'll stake you to a ticket home for your sentiment I own Mollie McCarty.' He wouldn't take the money, but he left his watcli at the Grand Pacific that night. The Grand Pacific safe was full of split-seconds wiich the Ken-tucklans and Tcnnesseeans left there after Mollie had come on home. That was racing, son, horse racing.'
