HOLLAR'S COLT RUNS AN IMPRESSIVE RACE AT CITY PARK. Starter Dwycr at the Barrier Spirited Racing at the Old Track Lady Ethel Rcviards Her Backers. New Orleans, La.. March 23. Starter Itiehanl Dwycr, who arrived from Los Angeles last night, took Mars Cassidy's place at City Park this afternoon and acquitted himself creditably. Mr. Dwyer adopted the walk-up. system and obtained good starts. Large fields went to the post in, two of the races, but in the others they were not so cumbersome. In the feature race, a seven furlong handicap for three-year-olds, Itlckey, the odds-on favorite, was beaten by Tainbeau. The latter was making his first appearance since his start In the Derby and found a track more to his liking. He was reserved in . the early running, but moved up with a rush on the far turn and drew away without much efTort when in the homestretch. The stable of W. Hollar furnished two of the winners and both were ridden by jockey Oregar. Horses of indifferent class put up some very spirited racing at the old track today, the finishes being all closely contested. The best race was the fourth. In which Enverite was a decided favorite. He led to the last strides where Louise Mac-farlau nipped hiin out, though it was a desperately tight lit. Quite a coup was made on Lady Ethel's victory in the fifth race. She was backed from tl to 1 to 4 to 1 and won easily by two lengths from Abjure. Pride of Woodstock won his third straight race for W. B. Freeman in the second event, beat lug Come on Sam a head in a drive. Dr.. Street-a well-known Kansas City veterinarian; is here buying up horses for the Kansas City Hunt Club. He will ship two carloads. The stables of H. C. Riddle and J. W. Forman will be shipped to Churchill Downs tomorrow. Bonnie Sue and Usury will go with the lot. W. B. Freeman has adopted a Toronto boy named Truman and will try to make a jockey 6ut of him. He has let the boy gallop horses and found enough promise In him to lead him to the legal adoption. An apprentice license was applied for today. Jockey Bobbins will leave Saturday foe Bennings, where he will ride for Tom Mannix. Jockey L. Smith's contract with W. H. Snyder & Co., which was only for Uie New Orleans meeting, expires Saturday and the boy will leave for Bcmilugs, where he will ride as a free lance beginning Monday. Governor Beckham Signs Racing Bill: Kentucky Now Has a Law Which Will Protect the Sport from Destruction by Gamblers GOVERNOR BECKHAM SIGNS RACING BILL. Kentucky Now Has a Law Which Will Protect the Sport From Destruction by Gamblers. Frankfort, Ky., March 23. Governor Beckham approved the state racing commission bill this afternoon, and it is now the law in this state. The Governor has given no intimation as to who will be the live commissioners, but it Is generally conceded that Colonel Jack Chinn will be one of them. It is believed the commission will bring about such clean racing that other states will adopt similar laws In the near future, the intention being to shut gamblers and bookmakers from controlling race tracks and race track regulation. The breeders who met iu Lexington and selected E. F. Clay, T. C. McDowell and J. N. Camden, Jr., as their choice for three of the commissioners have not filed their recommendations witii the Governor, probably because they wish to leave the Governor free to act as he pleases In the matter. Luretta Wins the Feature at Oaklawn: Equals the Track Record for One Mile, Beating King Eilswoth in 1:40 LURETTA WINS THE FEATURE AT OAKLAWN. Equals the Track Record for One Mile, beating King Ellsworth in 1:40. Hot Springs, Ark., March 23. Sumuierlike weather and a good card brought out a big crowd to Oaklawn this afternoon. The victory of four favorites and two second choices sent the talent home in a jovial mood. The sport was keen throughout, starter Snyder contributing greatly by good send-offs in five of the races. Speculation was also brisk, the mile race, having for starters, Luretta, King Ellsworth, Pontotoc and Cutter, commanding the greatest attention from investors. Luretta, after waiting behind Pontotoc's fast pace for the first three quarters, set sail and overhauling the Keeue candidate in the last furlong won, going away in the fast time of 1:40. This equals the track record here. Pontotoc tired badly in the final strides and King Ellsworth, coming with a rush, secured second place by a small margin. There was some doubt as to whether Pontotoc would go a mile successfully and many hooks took liberties with him. Pontotoc has been thoroughly schooled in jumping, and it is the intention of his owner to enter him extensively in eastern cross-country events this summer. An offer, said to be in the neighborhood of $7,000, has been refused for the horse by his present owner. W. J. Harding (John Bright) was among today's arrivals from Memphis. He came over from the Hock city to witness the running of Kundry, which raced in his colors, but failed to finish in the money. He sa-s that Kliugsor is going along encouragingly in his training and will be a starter In the Tennessee Derby. After the victory of Massive, in the first race, he was bid up from $300 to $700, at which figure T. II. Stewart secured him. John Condon and Charles Miers returned today from Chicago. Secretary Harvey Woodruff, of the Western Jockey Club, left tonight for Chicago by way of Memphis, where lie will stop over and have a conference with Secretary Macfarlan, of the New Memphis Jockey Club. Oakland Winners Heavily Supported: Graphite and Roycroft Mediums of Big Coups-Hard Rains and a Bad Track OAKLAND WINNERS HEAVILY SUPPORTED, Graphite and Roycroft Mediums of Big Coups Hard Rains and a Bad Track. San Francisco Cal., March 23. Torrential rains converted the Oakland race course into a canal this afternoon. There were, however, few withdrawals, unusually large fields competing In the majority of the races. All the winners and four were favorites received support in the betting. Bl coups were brought off over the victories- of Graphite -and Roycroft, the last named In particular, being the medium of some of the heaviest betting seen at the track in a long time. W. L. Oliver left for New York last night. His horses, including Lord Badge, Hoot Mon and others, were shipped from Ascot Park last week, their destination being Washington, D. C. Wee Lass was bid up from $500 to $1,100 by D, Sullivan, but retained by her owner. Shady Lad was also "boosted" from $100 to $700 and bought In. Carter and Excelsior Weights CARTER AND EXCELSIOR WEIGHTS. From a humble beginning the Carter Handicap has grown in value and importance until it ranks with the most desirable fixtures of the eastern turf. This year it attracted the highest class horses in training and an entry list leaving nothing to be desired. Its . first running in 1895 netted the winner. Charade, the small sura of $CO0. This year it will net the winner $7,850, The distance being only seven furlongs, Mr. Vosburgh has raised the average of weights as compared with the Brooklyn and other later handicaps, by assigning Sysonby as top weight, 134 pounds, grading from that down to 87 pounds on Wrenne. On the assumption that Sysonby may not start, Roseben, Hamburg Belle, Tradition, Phil Finch, Ormonde's Bight, Santa Catallna, Red Knight, Aeronaut, Southern Cross, Grenade, Bohemia, Marjoram, Race King and Orly all appear well treated and likely to go to the post if all goes well with them in training and racing prior to April Hi. The conditions, entries and weights arc as follows: The Carter, HaudicapiC$10,Oj)eprJjrpe-aXft. olds and upward, $30 each, dr"'$23 if declared by April 2; $100 additional for starters. Being at a mile and a sixteenth, Sysonby has been assigned lite customary 131 pounds and some of the sprinters in the Carter were not entered here. Some of the best of the western contingent appear here In Ram's Horn, 117; First Mason, 115; Phil Finch, 115; Colonial Girl, 114; Bad News, 113, and Tokalon, 104, hut it is doubtful if any of them start. SO SAYS GOVERNOR DAVIS AS TO GAMBLING; IN HOT SPRINGS. Race Track Is Included In His Order, Ho Says Evidently Has No Admiration For Oak-lawn Management. Hot Springs, Ark., March 23. Governor Davis still insists that he was in dead, hard earnest when he announced some time ago that no gambling will be permitted in Hot Springs after April 1. There Is, however, little trepidation evident among the people who would be most affected by the order to shut up the clubroouis aud close the betting ring at Oaklawn. These people Insist that the Governor made his declaration for political reasons and that he really does not mean all he says. Yet they say that the Governor has carried his threat to such extremes that he will have to "make good" and they believe that the clubroouis will be closed for a few days. It will not be necessary, these people say, for the Governor to call out the militia to enforce his order when he gives it formally. The clubrooms will close when he makes his request. The managers of the clubs sent a representative to Little Rock yesterday to interview the Governor. Tills man returned today. He says: "I called on Governor Davis and he stated positively we would have to close April 1. I for one will comply with his demands. "During my interview I brought up the question of the racetracks. This evidently galled the state's head official. Warming up under the collar he said. 'That bunch of ostracized St. Louis grafters must move from Arkansas, and we will see that they do If we have to run a country road right through thelr-zfaelngyplanh'--''" - Bjp'-iawwii!v - ----- John Condon said tonight when told of the Governor's declaration: "There is no law on the statutes in this state against racing or betting on races, so I don't see how the Governor could very well close racing at Oaklawn." May Pass Bill Increasing Racing Tax MAY PASS BILL INCREASING RACING TAX. New York, March 23. The Cassidy-Lansiug anti-racetrack bill, along with the opening of the Bennings meeting at Washington Monday next, continues to be the chief topic among turfmen at various gathering places along Broadway. The fact that the hill increasing the state racing tax to eight per ccut. of the gross receipts at all tracks might become a law was regarded as a good reason why the Cassidy-Lansing bill would be defeated. "The agricultural societies will get about $400,000 a year with an eight per cent, cutup," said a well posted turfman, "and the money will not be tainted either, for the reason that the racetracks no longer collect a dollar in revenue from the bookmakers. It was a wise move to divorce the betting ring from the track management, as the opponents of racing are unable to link the Jockey Club and the racing associations directly with the gambling element. Serious trouble would have resulted If the old arrangement had been allowed to remain in force. &usfciywrns.ijudPtc should be allowed to deprive thousands of people of a sport that is immensely popular is not clear to me. This is a free country and every man should be permitted to spend his own money as he may see fit. If the reformers do not believe in betting nobody will compel them to go to the racetrack. They do not have to mingle with the people who. love racehorses and enjoy healthful outings. It Is a case of 'live and let live,' and a fair minded man does not want to see 20,000 persons thrown out of employment of various kinds If this anti-racetrack, bill should pass.' " M. H. Tichenor & Co's Present String M. H. TICHEN0R & CO.'S PRESENT STRING. Memphis, Tenn., March 23. There are tjilrteen horses in the stable of M. H. Tlclienor & Co., of Chicago, at Montgomery Park, but the "hoodoo" is considered broken by the fact that two Jake Sanders and Sufficiency are owned by trainer Henry McDaniel. The list Is as follows. Good Luck, b. c, 3, by Sandringham Pocket-piece. Macumber, b. c, 3, by Ogden Myrtle Harkness. Rustling Silk, b. f, 3, by Mirthful Quiver. Waterside, br. c, 4, by Watercress Troyene. The last named six have been quartered all winter at Highland Farm near Lexington, Ky., in charge of trainer Charles Hughes, of the Zlegler stable. Just before they were brought here by trainer McDaniel, trainer Hughes offered $12,000 for the lot. McDaniel declined the offer, but on behalf of Mr. Tichenor, asked Hughes' to have Mr. Zlegler set a price on his entire stable. The deal fell through. Among the Tichenor two-year-olds is a sister to Flocarllue. If she performs as well as her sister, she will be worth to her owner vastly more than trainer Hughes offered for the lot. Madden Apologizes and Pays Fine MADDEN APOLOGIZES AND PAYS FINE. New York, March 23. John E. Madden, the Kentucky turfman, appeared before Justice Burr in the Supreme Court, Brooklyn, yesterday, and by public apology and the payment of a $250 fine purged himself of the contempt iu which he was adjudged when he refused to answer certain questions put to him. iu Saratoga last summer by a commissioner lppointed to take testimony iu the suit for separation brought by Mrs. Madden. Madden originally was. sentenced to a term in jail, and left New York state. Recently his lawyers secured a modification of the penalty, and yesterday's proceedings resulted. Gates Not Durnell's Partner GATES NOT DURNELL'S PARTNER. New York, March 23. It was repeatedly reported !ast fall that John W. Gates was a partner with C. E. Durnell In the latter's stable. Inquiry at the Jockey Club's office revealed the fact that no partnership, as demanded by the rules, has ever been registered totweeii Durnell aud Gales. The latter, it was learned, loaned the money to Durnell to purchase several of the best horses, aud took Duruell's notes for the payment of the amount. New Orleans, La., March 23. Jockey D. Hall Is in good standing again. It is said that evidence was produced to the effect that Pat Bulger was a much distressed horse after his race on Saturday last and that "he coughed up chunks of mud." News of the reinstatement was in most instances received with smiles. "I do not recall that the track was sloppy or heavy that day," said one sage among the turfmen. "So I wonder where Pat Bulger got that mud." "Maybe Pat was bred in Georgia," remarked another. ".You know, there are some clay eaters, iu that state." Still Investigating At City Park STILL INVESTIGATING AT CITY PARK. New Orleans, La., March 23. The steeplechase investigation at City Park has not been concluded. According to one of the judges, enough evidence is iu hand to warrant the extreme penalty being meted out to a well-known bookmaker and an equally well-known steeplechase jockey. It is understood that a confession has been obtained from one of the jockeys which implicates several people. M'cafferty Will Apply for a License: J. A. Wernberg Says the Jockey Club Will Be Presented With Evidence of Innoncence M'CAFFERTY WILL APPLY FOR A LICENSE. J. A. Wernberg Says the Jockey Club Will Bo Presented With Evidence of Innocence. New York, March 23. Jerry A. Wernberg, the Brooklyn lawyer, who owned a large stable of race horses trained by J. J. McCafferty when that horseman was disciplined by the Los Angeles racing authorities recently, said today that McCafferty had been unfairly treated, not only by the Los Angeles Jockey Club, but by the Pacific Jockey Club officials,- who later ruled him off for life. Mr. Wernberg denied most emphatically that the horse The Huguenot was doped, as charged. He says that Seymour Buetler, who represents Robert Plnk-erton at the tracks, will be an important witness for McCafferty wheti the case comes before the Jockey Club here upon McCafferty's return to the east. He said that McCafferty will ask for a license upon his arrival, and that this action will then draw out all the evidence in the case. "No analysis was made to detect the alleged dope," added Mr. Wernberg. "In our stable The Huguenot ran 15 times and was placed 13. He was the most consistent horse we ever had. We presented affidavits that McCafferty had not been near the stable when The Huguenot was alleged to have been doped." Page 2 DAILY RACING FORM ISSUED EVERY DAY. DAILY RACING FORM PUBLISHING CO. ADDRESS ALL COMMUNICATIONS TO SECRETARY KENTUCKY RACING ASSOCIATION, LEXINGTON, KY. ARTHUR PEABODY b SONS desire to draw attention to the fact that another horse, with whose training methods and stable connections they are entirely familiar with, starts at Bennings, Monday, March 26th, (opening day). We expect the odds to be S or 10 to 1. as the Washington bookmakers will discount the good form which the horse lias shown prior to his shipment from California. Last year we advertised In this very same manner, for the opening day, and sent out Sir Brillar, 10 to I, Won. Strictly one horse advised, always. We fully expect to duplicate our success of last year and desire to state that to show the racing public our good intentions, we will again reduce the price for this "Opcnlug Day Occasional" only, same as last year, to THREE DOLLARS.
