Twenty thousand persons' were nttracted by the perfect summer weather and the really good card to the Sheepshead Bay race course this afternoon. The appropriately named Daisy Stakes, on the grass course, and the Coney Island Handicap, bristling with sprinting possibilities, were the two brilliant features programed. A two-year-old selling race, at five furlongs; a race at a mile, for tbree-year-old maidens; a mile and a furlong handicap, and a mile and a sixteenth grass selling race, for three-year-olds and over, respectively, made' up the remainder of this interesting card. Thomas C. McDowell's crack western filly. King's Daughter, favored at the start of the Coney Island Handicap, proceeded to tow-rope the best fiejd of sprinters in training, including the champion Roseben, and for a brief time the big crowd, in blissful ignorance that an error had been made, was congratulating itself on having witnessed a unique and record-breaking performance, which the time 1:11, mistakahly hung out directly after the race, indicated. The correct time. 1:12, was made known later, with the explanation that the figures first shown, were all awry, due to a breakdown or sudden disarrangement of the mechanism of the electric time announcer recently installed. Several prominent horsemen. Including J. W. Rogers, trainer of Prince Hnmburg. which finished a close second, remarked that there must have been a mistake and agreed that it was more than a second out of the way. In the meantime the fame of the exploit had penetrated every portion of the country. The westerners who had received a serious financial set-back on Kentucky Beau, backed Into hot favoritism for the Daisy Stakes, ignored completely the pretensions or even the existence of King's Daughter In the following race. The layers were left practically with clean sheets. Bed River showed amazing speed over the grass course in the two-year-old fixture. Nothing ever got within hailing distance of tills wonderfully improved Fatherless colt, but then the supposed contender In Kentucky Beau was practically left at the post. Shaw had the mount and was caught napping. Bed Biver was one of the fastest yearlings ever shown in this country, according to his trainer, Tom Henley, who added that lie came honestly by his speed. His dam, Lizzie II., being a full sister to the great Morello. Decidedly Rare Happening at Windsor: Edwin Gum at Odds of 100 to 1 Wins a Race Field Books Are Hard Hit DECIDEDLY RARE HAPPENING AT WINDSOR. Edwin Gum at Odds of 100 to 1 Wins a Race Field Books Are Hard Hit. Detroit, Mich., June 22. Edwin Gum, at odds of 100 to 1, won the fourth race at Windsor this afternoon and gave the natives much to talk about. The race was at six furlongs and La Gloria was a warm favorite. Opening at 50 to 1, Edwin Gum's price soared to 100 to 1 and at that price several bets were recorded in the eight books, one man getting on $10 at this price, while many had the long shot across the board. The field books suffered the most and it will be some time before one of them at hast will recover. Jockey Stone, who bad the leg upon Edwin Gum, took a good hold of his mount from the start and raced him in behind La Gloria, which set a sizzling pace through the heavy going. After the field was straightened out for the finish, Stone went at Edwin Gum and, drawing alongside or La Gloria, raced with her for a hundred yards and then went to the front and won going away. There were shouts of joy from the lucky ones who held tickets on the gelding. Stone also rode another long one In the fifth. John Garner, at 30 to 1, and landed him third by a good margin. The weather was cold and raw and overcoats were in evidence. Frequent showers during the afternoon made the going deep and heavy, but front runners did not get the money by any means. Most of the winners came from behind, Attlla being one of them. He was last In the backstretch, a half dozen lengths behind the others, but at the end won rather easily. Saylor to Become a Jumper SAYLOR TO BECOME A JUMPER. New York, June 22. John E. Madden has sold the three-year-old Saylor to Thomas Hitchcock, Jr. .Mr. Hitchcock will Immediately begin to school his liorse for the jumps and Saylor may be one of his starters next fall at Belmont Park in the Harbor Hill Cup Steeplechase. Saylor is a chestnut or rugged build and fair size by Ogden, the Futurity winner of 1S90, out of Ilithya. He has a fine turn of speed and Mr. Hitchcock . may try to win a maiden race on the flat with hiin before putting him permanently to jumping. Unbeaten Prestige Goes to Stud UNBEATEN PRESTIGE GOES TO STUD. Paris, June 22. William K. Vanderbilt's unbeaten three-year-old, Prestige, has broken down in training after winning sixteen races in succession. Trainer Duke says Prestige will be sent to the stud immediately, Mr. Vanderbilt not desiring to risk tarnishing the record of the finest horse in France ,j through having him run again. Kunz Plans a Killing with Kercheval: Colt, However, Hasn't Speed Enough - Nicol Rides Three Winners - Jockey Moreland's Father Dies KUNZ PLANS A KILLING WITH KERCHEVAL. Colt, However, Hasn't Speed En6ugh Nicol Rides Three Winners Jockey Moreland's Father Dies. Cincinnati. O., June 22. A program of more than ordinary note was offered at Latonia today and in spite of showers throughout the forenoon the attendance was up to the average and the betting lively. In the early morning it looked as though the track would be fast, but the rain put it In sloppy condition again. The handicap brought out a good field and it was of especial Interest in view of the fact that three of the Queen City Handicap candidates. Alma Dufour, Dutch Barbara and Coruscate were starters. That Colonel Jim Douglas carried his heavy Impost of 115 pounds to an easy victory makes this sterling performer out to be about at the top of the handicap list here. Stanley H. Kunz attempted a coup in this race with Kercheval. Kercheval started several days ago In a six furlong handicap on a heavy track and ran last all the way. The Kunz stable evidently knew that Kercheval could do better, for today they backed him from 10 to 1 to 4J to 1 at post time. Allen was first posted to ride, but Oregar was substituted. Kercheval suffered from much interference and finished close up, only lieing beaten a half length for third money. A close finish between Mildrene and Avendow In the third race gave some of the spectators another opportunity to disagree with the judges. Avendow was on the inside and winning when Nicol brought Mildrene up fast in the last few strides. Some of those behind the finish thought Avendow lasted it out and won, but the judges decided otherwise. Jockey Nicol rode three winners Mildrene, Hubbard and Harold D. His success on both Mildrene and Harold D. was due solely to his superior riding and strong finishing. Jockey Troxler, who rode Sir nuon in his three western victories tills year, has been requested by George J. Long to ride the colt in the Advance Stakes, at Sheepshead Bay, June 30. Jockey Morelahd,s'1,"faTher dled last night '"from-burns received in an effort to save his wife from the flames following the explosion of a gasoline stove in their home in Bellevue, Ky., last Saturday. The house, which had a short while before lieen purchased by the jockey and presented to his parents, was destroyed. Mrs. Moreland Is also in a dangerous condition in a local hospital from the burns received. Jockey Moreland has been called here from Windsor. C. C. MeCafferty bid up Adesso from $400 to $S00. The horse was retained by his owner. Wayne .Toplin, who "holds the contract on jockey E. Morrison, lias asked the judges not to permit the boy to ride at Latonia. Morrison refused to go to Buffalo to ride at Jopliu's request. C. Heifers claimed J. t!. Milam's Captain Bush out of the sixth race for $1,200. 0. C. MeCafferty turned down an offer of $3,000 for Bedford made by J. J. Marklein. Incantation is Disqualified at Buffalo INCANTATION IS DISQUALIFIED AT BUFFALO. Buffalo, N. Y., June 22. Incantation was disqualified after finishing first in the feature race at Kenil worth Park today. It was In the handicap at six furlongs for three-year-olds and over. Gln-ette, carrying 120 pounds with Clark up, was favorite closing at evens. When the barrier was released Ginette and Incantation rushed off In front. They were fighting it out gamely until at the head of the stretch when Koerner allowed his mount to bore in, shutting off Ginette. Clark pulled tip and then came around, going under the wire a head liehind Incantation. Clark registered a protest, which was promptly allowed by the stewards. Boyal Window was given second place and Tickle third. Grace Kimball was supposed to be a good thing in the second race. Hlldebrand had the mount and finished absolutely last. When the harrier was sprung in the mile race it caught three of the nine starters. They broke the tape and carried It with them. Blondy, which won on Tuesday, had an easy time of it In the fourth race. The track was slow, the weather fair and the attendance large. The talent broke better than even on the day. Mode Nicoll today sold to James Johnston for $1,000 his good two-year-old colt Affinity, by Ban-astar Last Love. New York Rooms Get Bad Service NEW YORK ROOMS GET BAD SERVICE. New York, June 22. The published reports that the New York poolrooms had resumed business on the old basis with the Inauguration of the present Sheepshead Bay meeting, were without foundation. As a matter of fact, those few attempting to post prices and results were badly mixed up. Yesterday a number of them paid off on Dandelion, as the winner of the Suburban. All made book with the absentee, Oliver Cromwell, in, and without the added starters, Agile and Kuroki. In the first race books were made on the basis of five starters and there were only two Brookdale Nymph and Tradition with a resultant declaring off of bets by the layers. Every telephone in the neighborhood of the racetrack is under close surveillance and any new application for such service is thoroughly investigated. Drake Horses Go to Salem DRAKE HORSES GO TO SALEM. New York, June 22. John A. Drake's horses have been shipped to Rockingham Park. The shipment includes three cars, and it Is the evident intention of Mr. Drake to make a brave showing at the new track. John Cheeney sent one car from Belmont Park, while John Hynes and Frank McCahe will ship one car tomorrow night. By the middle of next week the stables at Rockingham Park will be filled. Gates, won a race at Seattle last Tuesday and nearly every daily newspaper in America published the statement that the horse had scored his one hundredth win and that Captain R. It. Rice would forthwith send him back to Varner, Ark., to spend his remaining days in luxurious ease. Daily Racing Form, knowing that W. B. Gates had not won 100 races of which there is record, regarded the story as the invention of some faking space writer and paid no further attention to it until several communications, of which the following is a sample, were received: . Gates is shy 33 wins to make up the 100 claimed for him. He may have beaten his shadow that many times in raees around the paddock, but there does not happen to be any record ot such performances. It was frequently claimed that Logan won 100 races, but the records do not show them. In the fact that W. B. Gates was not raced as a two-year-old may be found argument that his prolonged usefulness is due to a more perfect physical development than the average thoroughbred beginning Ids career early in Ills second year, would ' tseem to attain.
