RUNS SEVEN FURLONGS IN 1:24 4-5 IN WINNING THE SWIFT STAKES. Prince Hamburg Ties the Record for Six and One-half Furlongs Red River Wins Zephyr Stakes Say of Great Sport. New York. June 2C At Sheepshead Ray this afternoon there was another splendid program right on top of a series of dally offerings such as have been unexcelled in the history of the sport in this country. Steadily Increasing interest and patronage is the rasnlt. Not less than 18,000 persons were on hand. They saw Prince Hamburg, through a meritorious performance In the ojiening event, equal the American mark at six and a half furlongs set by MIneola, carrying 10.1 pounds as a two-year-old in July, 10-04, and tied by Martinmas, as a four-year-old, with 111 pounds up, in September. 1904. Next they saw Rye, fast and consistent, at odds ou, furnish his big letting connections with golden opportunity, being the successful medium of the usual colossal plunge. Then came the Zephyr Stakes in which H. T. Wilson's Red River confirmed his sensational form in the Daisy Stakes by winning easily. Next Alex Shields' Halifax performed an astounding feat in the Swift Stakes when he achieved a hollow victory over Orinondale and Brookdale Nymph and established the new American record of 1:24J for seven furlongs. The liehavior of the fiery IiandFel three-year-old at the post was unusually . unruly and be was nearly left In consequence. Or-mondale got away running and even the Whitney lllly had a big advantage. over him. The process of overhauling the leaders was accomplished gradually and no one was prepared for the sensational stretcli sprint that won out in such commanding style for Handzarra's erratic's brother. Outside of moderate stable support and the piking contigenr, the winner bad no following. It was a disastrous upset for the plunging brigade. The fifth race, at a mile, furnished one of the closest finishes of the year, six horses being so clustered that there was no more than a half length between any two of them. Fancy Bird, beautifully ridden by Miller, winning by a head from Stimulant, tiring under Shaw's bard riding and vigorous. whipping, only a head in front of Mary Morris Inadequately handled by Notter. The sport wound up with another Interesting race over the grass course. Maxuar was piloted to victory by an unfashionable jockey named Finn. Maxuar beat off the noted Agile, which bad performed so valiantly In the Suburban only a short time before, and lowered the track record for one mile and three-sixteenths on the turf by one-fifth of a second. It is reported that an arrangement has been made whereby the yearlings bred by Clarence H. Mackay, are to be sold collectively to Frank C. Bishop, one of the partners in tlie Newcastle" Stable, and will be trained by Thomas Welch. There will be quite an exodus of racing folk to Rockingham Park tomorrow night. Many trainers and horsemen will pack up for a stay at the new track and a special ear has been engaged for patrons of the clubhouse in New York who Intend to be on hand on the opening Iaj The majority will leave on the midnight train to which the special car will be a 1 1 a ched. La Pucelle Lowers Windsor Mile Record: Runs a Sparkling Race-No Favorites Win - Jockey Swain is Timid after His Fall LA PUCELLE LOWERS WINDSOR MILE RECORD. Runs a Sparkling Race No Favorites Win Jockey Swain Is Timid After His Fall, Detroit, Mich., June 2(5. La Pucelle ran a dazzling race in Windsor's feature this afternoon. She was in front all the way and covered the mile In l-.UUl, lowering the track record from 3:.'J. The race was the third on the card and of the live original entries Wexford declined the issue. The three besides the winner which went to the post were I'eter Sterling, Harry Stephens and Daniel C. Tiie books made I'eter Sterling the favorite, laying o to r. against him. This was on suspicion that La Puerile could not go a mile at top speed. The mare which has run some good races in her days never ran n better one than she did this afternoon. Those behind her never got to within three lengths of her and at the end she was simply cantering, wlille the others were tiring even under the whip. When the time was hung out Uiere was something of a demonstration from the grandstand occupants The day was a cloudless one and the attendance was large. Favorites fared badly, not a real first choice landing first money. Jerry Sharp was a well backed second choice, while King's Guinea held second place honors In his race. He ran a good race, being fourth in the stretch and closing the gap under the whip, finally won going away. Jockey Swain rode Densie Densmore In the first lace and even to the casual observer It was noticeable that the lad was still suffering from a nervous attack from his recent fall. He did not seem inclined to take a chance to get through w;lth his mount and there was an absence of that dasli and vim which has heretofore characterized his riding. After this performance the judges decided that it was best that he. remain out of the saddle until he has recovered from the shock resulting from the accident of last Saturday. Planute Wins the Cincinnati Trophy: Victorious Colt is the Property of Edward Corrigan and it Was His First Start PLANUTE WINS THE CINCINNATI TROPHY, Victorious Colt Is the Property of Edward Corrigan and it Was His First Start. Cincinnati, O., June 20. Today's racing at Latonia developed a series of surprises not the least of which was the victory of Edward Corrlgan's colt Planutc, an added starter, and quoted at odds of 20 to 1 in the valuable Cincinnati Trophy Stakes for two-year-olds at five and one-half furlongs. It was the first start of I'lanute , and the public had no line on him, but be had been working well and Mr. Corrigan,' while not over-con- ' tident, expected the youngster to run a good race. Two were withdrawn. Pink Star and Lens, and four were added. Besides Planute, Warner firlswell, Harold I). and Navarro came in, making all told a field of sixteen starters. The Oerst pair, Zal and Yowric, Ovelando, on which NIeol had the mount, and La Veita, were considered best and these carried the bulk of the money invested on the race. For' so big a field, starter Holtman was' lucky to get them away in fairly good order. Planute was green at the post and was last of the field to get into his stride when the barrier was sprung. Selene B., Lexollne and Zal were first away and Warner Grlswell was in the ruck. Selene B. rushed to the front. La Veita," Zal and Lexoline, all heads apart, came next and following them were, Yowrle and Marmoreal), the latter quickly dropping back from a forward position. This was -the order of the running until on the stretch turn. There Zal passed bis competitors easily and, turning into the stretch a length to the good, seemed like a certain winner. He held his advantage passing the last eighth iost, where Hall brought Planute up and showing a fine torn of speed, he won by a length and a half. Zal, in a hard drive, only beat his stable companion, Yowric, a half length for second place. Getting off as badly as he did, Planute ran a remarkable race and is evidently a colt of brilliant promise. The stake is one of the most valuable of western two-year-old events. It was worth net to the winner $4,440 and a handsome silver cup, presented Jtf Hp". Julius FleUjchmann, also went to Mr. Corrigan. Mr. Flelschmann was the- guest of the judges during the running of the event and In a neatly turned speech, presented the trophy to Mr. Corrigan, after which the band played "The Wearing of the Green." Planute Is by Mr. Corrlgan's imported horse Planudes, out of Lute and was bred at his Lexington stock farm. Bonaventure, another outsider, earned brackets today. This youngster captured the opening race at mills of 40 to 1. The steeplechase furnished a good contest. Port Warden, the main reliance of the Gerst stable fell, but the other entry, Stoddard, proved much the best of the others and won easily. After the running of the stake race, Mr. Corrigan expressed dissatisfaction at the crowding of his colt by La Veita at the sixteenth post. "I know a winner should not kick," he said, "hut I dislike rough riding under any circumstances." I'inaud, bought out of a selling race last night by C. C. McCafferty, was today sold to II. R. Schaefer, tlie New York turfman. Prior to the running of the last race, Joe Yeager offered the owners of La Fayette $1,300 for the colt which was refused. lie was entered to be sold for $S00, but escaped being bid up after winning. For repeatedly bumping and finally swerving In front of Roscoe in the second race, Priuclpla, which finished second, was disqualified. Kassil's Good Race through the Field: Sets a New Record for the Short Course at Kenil Worth Park - Three Successful Favorites KASSIL'S GOOD RACE THROUGH THE FIELD. Sets a Now Record for the Short Course at Kenii-worth Park Three Successful Favorites. Buffalo, N. Y., June 20. Kassil, carrying 155 pounds with Terry up, won the feature event at Keuilworth today, the Lockport Steeplechase Stakes, over the short course. Kassil raced the others to easy defeat, smashing the track record. On June 1.1, with IIS) pounds, Kassil covered the distance In 4:01. Today the gelding clipped -il seconds from his previous mark. The race was undeniably the best steeplechase ever run at this track. An even break in the matter of their choices is the best the public could get with the twenty-five layers that cut in for the day's business. Ruth W.. Elliiott and Tlie Scold were the winning favorites. The first two won their races in easy style, but The Scold, the most heavily backed horse of the day, gave his supporters a cold chill when within a few strides of tlie wire, Olive Leaf closed up with a rush and with a stronger rider up would have won. Jockey Bell has severed his connections with the Deppeler stable. Ronianelli has been engaged to do the riding for the remainder of the meeting. Barney Schrelber's Canadian string, which has been resting up at Hamilton since the close of that meeting, arrived here today. Tartan's Victory Entirely Regular TARTAN'S VICTORY ENTIRELY REGULAR. The statement in a local newspaper to the effect that Tartan was prepared at one of the Chicago tracks for the race over which a betting coup was made at Sheepsliead Bay last Friday was incorrect. The horse was taken east from .Memphis in May, by trainer John Powers, and was defeated at Graves-end on June 7. It is not probable that trainer Powers would have shipped him to Chicago to work out for the race won on June 22. However, a western racing ofilclal just returned from New York said vesterday: "There seems to be a lot of tommyrot about Tartan's victory. The horse has been in tlie east all the while and his winning was- entirely regular. The fact that he was bet on out this way and that the handbookmakers were bard hit does not give a newspaper license to .Ultimate even In a veiled way, as has been done, that a speedier horse was substituted. The wiping out of the Narragansett Park meeting through political troubles at Providence and the Inability of the Montreal Jockey Club to have its track ready for racing this year, together with the doubt attending the holding of n fall meeting at Salem leaves the "second circuit" of the east a decided wreck. If the spring meeting of twenty-one days which is to open at Salem tomorrow proves a success, it is practically certain that the fall dates, September 1 to 15. will be occupied. But this leaves gaps between July 21, the ending of the spring meeting and September 1, tlie beginning of the fall meeting at the new track and between September 15, the closing at Salem, and November 10. the opening at Bennings. The Kenilworth Park meeting ends July 7, so the people and horses now at Buffalo will have to move over to Fort Erie, which opens July 10; go to Salem for the last fourteen days or to the New York city tracks. A few of them might be accommodated at Latonia, where the meeting Is certain to be extended after July 5. Not all of them can be taken care of at Fort Erie, for Windsor will close on July 7, and the horses from that track will naturally have first call on the stable room. There have been no definite announcements as to dates In the west and south. It Is presumed that Latonia will continue up to the opening of the Douglas Park track in Louisville, which may be about September 1. In October It Is likely that there will be another meeting at Latonia. Memphis and Nashville will, it is believed, hold fall meetings. There will be no clashing of dates in New Orleans, though the division of dates between" City Park and the Fair Grounds lias not been agreed upon. The Fort Erie meeting will end August 22. This will be followed by short meetings at Windsor, Hamilton and Toronto, the season In the north closing ou Septemlier 29. No announcements have been made as to Los Angeles. The troubles of the Ascot Park people with the politicians and city ofllcials have not, insofar as is known, been settled. However, tlie presumption is that they will race about 100 days, beginning Thanksgiving Day. President Williams says the Oakland meeting will open as usual. Joseph Burns, father of Tommy Burns, is trvlng to recover possession of his two sons, William, aged 14 years, and Guy, 15 years old, who are now being eared for by their brother Tommy Burns, the jockey. The father says the two boys are incorrigible. All hands appeared in the Children's Court in Brooklyn Saturday. Tommy, the jockey, said his father sold him to a racing firm for $1,200 a year, but the following year Tommy signed himself for $12,000 a year. Then his father demanded a certain percentage of this, which Tommy refused to ante up. lie is now trying to make jockeys of his brothers. He says lie is. worth $100,000 and is able to care for them, while his father is not. The father was infuriated at Tommy's statement and attempted to chastise him, but the court officers kept the two apart. The matter was adjourned until July 0. John H. Kirby is Surely Dead JOHN H. KIRBY IS SURELY DEAD. In the first race on the second day of the Denver meeting the horse which finished fourth is named in the reports of the race as John II. Kirby. It was in all probability J. V.
