NO. 153. CHICAGO, THURSDAY, JUNE 28, 1906. PRICE 5 CENTS Is Go between a Gelding?: Messrs Hitchcock Say Not and Protest His Suburban Victory IS GO BETWEEN A GELDING? MESSRS. HITCHCOCK SAY NOT AND PROTEST HIS SUBURBAN VICTORY. Alex Shields, His Owner, Says He Really Doesn't Know, but Bought Him as Such Perverse Has It Easy, New York, Juno 27. Messrs. V. It. & T. n. Hitchcock, Jr., today sprang the biggest turf sensation of the year by tiling a formal protest with the Sheepshead Bay stewards against Go Between, on the grounds that lie won the Suburban Handicap Incorrectly described as a gelding. The claim is made that the Meddler five-year-old has never been altered. Alex Shield, who is the owner of Co Between, said that lie was unable off-hand to contradict the contention of the Messrs. Hitchcock. The Idea that the horse might lie entire or even a ridgllng had never occurred to him, be said, but if it should turn out to be true, be would hold the Jockey Club responsible, as be bought the horse in good faith out of a selling race, in which lie was described officially as a gelding. If the protest of Messrs. Hitchcock Is sustained. Dandelion, the runner-up in the Suburban, will bt awarded lirst money of $10,S50 and It will also open up an endless vista of reimbursements by former owners of former winnings of the horse. Portending rain kept today's attendance at Sheeps-lioad Bav down to about 12,000 tersons. The card, while go'od, was hardly up to the standard of excellence hitherto dispensed by the Coney Island Jockey Club. . . The Whitney filly Perverse, virtually enjoyed a walkover In the Mermaid Slakes, at a mile and a furlong. There was nothing opposed to the Improving sister to Stalwart to force her to accelerate her stride beyond a common canter at any stage of the journey. The chief Interest of the afternoon was really centered in the appearance of George C. Bennett's western crack Etlion, which had attracted general attention by his close third to the two juvenile stars Ballot and Water Pearl on the opening day. The beautifully turned Intrusive colt continued the good opinion entertained of him, by surmounting serious dlttl'dittl ln-Uie eurly running of today's-.race -over the last live- and a half furlongs of the Futurity eourse and making good, witli ears pricked; in the most impressive fashion at the epd. Immense wagers were collected over his victory by the western contingent. Jockey .Miller broke tinder the barrier four times with Bill Phillips in the lifth race. The fact that lie was not disciplined by the starter excited much comment. The crack rider also escaped punishment after palpably fouling Prank Lord, in the lirst race, which he won on the Wilson two-year-old Monfort. Williams' claim was disallowed. Bob McOihben, of San Prancisco. is the owner of the Lake Stable, which establishment sent Sahara out in the Mermaid Stakes. Her owner won a good bet on his tilly for second place, which she secured with unexiiected ease. Concert is in Splendid Form Just Now: Proves Her Fancy for Most Any Kind of Track Precious Stone the Only Winning Favorite CONCERT IS IN SPLENDID FORM JUST NOW. Proves Her Fancy for Most Any Kind of Track Precious Stono the Only Winning Favorite. Cincinnati, O., June 27. Precious Stone was the only actual favorite to land in front at Latonia today. Hubbard, successful in the 'last race, was a well backed second choice. Dr. McCIuer being the favorite. The feature of the card was a handicap at a mile In which seven started. Alma Dufour being the only absentee. In spite of her easy victory a few days ago in the Merchants- Stakes on a heavy track, the crowd was inclined to play around Concert at least until the stable money showed in the ring. There seemed to be an impression that the track would not suit her. In the running she proved clearly that in her present form she is a shifty lilly in any sort of going for at the half mile ground she quickly disposed of Colonel Jim Douglas, then outran the others without great effort and won as her rider pleased by live lengths. With 122 pounds in the saddle Colonel Jim Douglas put up an excellent performance. C. C. McCaffertv was around with his halter again, today. He bid up Tom Crowe from $700 to $1,000 and got him. Twenty-one liooks drew in, J. J. Marklein dropping out of line for a few days. The petition to the Kentucky State Racing Commission requesting an extension of the racing dates-at Latonia is receiving the signatures of numerous horsemen. Weights for the Brewers' Handicap to lie run Saturday, were announced today. Floral King is given top weight, 12. pounds: Funiciilalre will be asked to carry 115, anil if the track is in good condition is considered a certain starter. C. C. McCafferty is going slowly with Dr. Leggo and is preparing him with a view to sending him and several others to lie raced at Saratoga. Judge Macfarlan said today that there is slight Ukllhood of a fall meeting being Jield in Memphis this year. Jere Dunn Dies in New Jersey , JERE DUNN DIES IN NEW JERSEY. New York, June 27. Jere Dunn, widely known in racing and sporting circles, died at Elizabeth, N. at 10 o'clock this morning. His death was due to a stricture of the larynx, from which he had suffered great pain for many months. Mr. Dunn was in San Francisco at the time of the earthquake and made the journey to Elizabeth about May 1, stopping at Chicago for two or three days, where lie told his acquaintances that be was going to New Jersey to die. lie knew that the end was fast approaching. In the old days about Chicago Dunn was a familiar figure in gambling circles. In 1SS4 he killed James Elliott, who had the reputation of being a "bad man," in a tight in the old Tivoli restaurant. The trial of the case extended over about four months and cost Cook County aliout X100 000. Dunn was acquitted. lie came to New York and killed a character of the "Hungry Joe" tvtte known as "Logan No. 2." The coroner's jiirv acquitted Dunn, rendering a verdict of "justifiable homicide." After this Dunn became the owner of a stalde of thoroughbreds headed by the famous Sunny Slope. He never departed from the turf and he never owned another horse as good as Sunnv Slope. Of late years his stable was wuall and embraced only mediocre horses." Jockey Rogan's Condition Critical JOCKEY ROGAN'S CONDITION CRITICAL. New York, June 27. William Hendrie Dies at Hamilton, Ont: Canada's Most Noted Breeder and Turfman Expires after a Long Illness - Funeral Friday WILLIAM HENDRIE DIES AT HAMILTON, ONT. Canada's Most Noted Breeder and Turfman Expires After a Long Illness Funeral Friday. Detroit, Mich., June 27.-Mr. William Hendrie, president of the Ontario Jockey Club, the father of .Mr. George M. Hendrie, president of the Highland Park Jockey Club, died this afternoon at his home In Hamilton, Ontario, after a lingering illness. Immediately upon receipt at the Windsor track of the news of the death, which was shortly . after :; o'clock, Secretary Parmer ordered the tlags at half mast. Mr. Hendrie had seen the alloted three score and ten and was one of the most widely known turfmen in this country. Both as a breeder and a racer he has been prominent for forty years or more. Ills stud, where race horses as well as draught horses are bred, is situated a few miles from Hamilton and is known as the Royal Oaks Farm. It is a complete establishment in every respect. Mr. Hendrie was also an honorary inemlier of the English Jockey Club. He raced horses more for the siort than for the pecuniary attachments. The year Martlmas won the Futurity, the money which was won was used by Mr. Hendrie to erect a wing of the Hamilton Hospital, which is known as the Mar-timas Annex. When Martlmas was disqualified after winning the Flatbush Stakes the officials fold Mr. Hendrie that they were sorry to set his colt back, but that nothing else could lie done, the circumstances warranting such severe action. Mr. Hen-drie's replv was that he did not care for the money lost. He "knew his colt was the best and lie was satisfied. . , He was in every sense a gentleman and a thorough sportsman and his loss Is a severe blow to the Canadian turf. The funeral will take place on Friday and it is possible there will be no racing at Windsor on that day as a mark of respect. Good Day for the Books at Buffalo GOOD DAY FOR THE BOOKS AT BUFFALO. Today's Best TODAY'S BEST. At Windsor Hoola. second race. At Buffalo Miss Eillie, sixth race. At Sheepshoad Ray Tradition, first race. At Rockingham Park Grapple, fourth race. At Latonia Rcdford, third race. Best of the day Roola. For a long shot A. Muskoday Is worth trying in the sixth Sheepshcad. Everything Ready at Rockingham Park EVERYTHING READY AT ROCKINGHAM PARK. Salcin, N. 11., .Tune 27. Racing will be inaugurated at Rockingham Park tomorrow when the New England Breeders' Club will liegin its twenty-one day meeting. John A. Drake and ids associates have spent with a lavish hand at the Salem track. No expense lias been spared to make the 'plant a model one and many ot the horsemen here declare that when completed It will compare favorably with Belmont Park. There is yet some little work to lie done about the plant, such as fixing the roads and approaches. The buildings arc fully completed, however, and everything is in readiness for tomorrow's opening. The one drawback to the meeting will be the restrictions which will be placed on the betting. The word lias gone out that no money will be permitted to pass and whatever wagering is done will be strictly on the credit system. Rockingham Park is about one hour and ten minutes from Boston nnd it is on that city that the club will mainly depend for its patronage. Judges Murphy and Ode arrived this, morning, while starter Dade Is expected-tomorrow morning.. Algernon Daingerlield. assistant secretary of the Jockey Club, got in from New York this morning and will attend to the many minor details that come with the opening of ji new meeting. W. P. Gilpin will be the patrol judge and his appointment lias proven popular. Some of the stables which woro expected from New York did not arrive. It was supposed that Biirlew's Ilclnicre and Fuller's Tokalon would be starters in the big race, but up to date they have failed to put in an apiearance. The fact that there will be no open betting permitted here and that M. M. Minton, president of the Providence track, has come out with an announcement that there will be no meeting at Nar-ragansett Park this year has kept many stables from shipping here. .
