ETHON WINS THE SPRING AND DISHABILLE TAKES THE LONG ISLAND HANDICAP. Kernel Scores Victory in the Independence Handicap Lancastrian Wins for Ellison Buffalo Man Wounded at the Track. New York, July 4. The falling short of a record breaking crowd at Sheepshcad Bay track today was ascribed wholly to the unfavorable weather conditions of the forenoon. Despite lowering skies, there were 30,000 persons present to witness a splendid racing card which Included three Important ami valuable stakes. Two of these went to George C. Bennett, the Memphis turfman. The Long Island Handicap, generally productive of good contests in the past, was won in imperious fashion by Mr. Bennett's crack mare Dishabille. This brilliant daughter of King's Counsel and Night Gown simply played with some of the best handicap horses in training on the local tracks. With Kthon Mr. Bennett won the Spring .Stakes for two-year-olds. Thus at one bound these two representatives of the best that the west has produced this season, established themselves at the top of the heap in the east. The liideieiidence Steeplechase produced a spectacular and truly run race. It was won by the improved Sir Dixon horse. Kernel, splendidly ridden by Stone. Thomas Hitchcock made strong effort to have Hay reinstated in order that the crack jockey could ride l'aul .lones. Had be succeeded there might have been another story to tell. Bill Phillips' victory in the second created much adverse comment. The favorite Monet was badiy handled. Al Powell won a nose victory in the liftli for two-year-olds, under selling conditions and enriched Senator MeCarren to the extent of $30,000. C B. Ellison's Lancastrian, a heavily backed favorite, easily annexed the long distance race on the grass. It transpires that the Laudemau people declined to back John l.yle in the local betting ring yesterday, so that they could get their money on at a good price elsewhere. Jockey Jack Martin is going to marry a Bronx girl in the near future. Ormonde's Kiglit was castrated yesterday in the Iiojk; that the change to a gelding williinprovejlijs. - r temper. J. II. Fowles, of 140 Seneea. ,Streit. Buffalo, was shot in the head just as the horses lfulshed in the Spring Sthkes. At ttie hospital the bullet! was ex-tiacted. It was of 22 calibre and is presumed to have Iieen tired by some Independence Day celebrant. The wound is not dangerous. The incident, however, created much excitement. Branches Wins Latonia' Stake Feature: Steeplechase An Interesting Spectacle - Large Attendance - Cook May Sell All of His Horses BRANCAS WINS LATONIA'S STAKE FEATURE. Steeplechase An Interesting Spectacle Largo Attendance Cook May Sell All of His Horses. Cincinnati, 0., July 4. Splendid weather and the prospect of witnessing some good sport attracted a tremendous crowd to Latonla today. In fact, the attendance approached the record established Decoration Day when the biggest assemblage ever gathered at this course passed through the turnstiles. William Genu's Brancas. which won the feature race, the Cincinnati Hotel Handicap, gave an exhibition such as is seldom seen. He was at one time during the runing of the race fully a sixteenth of a mile in the rear of the other horses and apparently hopelessly out of It. Gradually he decreased tlie distance that separated him from his opponents and, wearing them down one by one with an amazing display of speed and gameness, won drawing away from Alma Dufour amidst the greatest applause ever accorded a winner at tills track. The track, which was partially lumpy and stiff, was exactly to his liking and therefore the smart element accorded him the post of honor and backed him liberally at a short price. Alma Dufour ran a sparkling race and gave evidence of returning to her best form, but under prevailing conditions, she was held safe by the Gerst candidate. She will improve and at the difference of weight allotted them by tbe handl-eapper at their next meeting, the mare will probably reverse this running, especially if the track is in good condition. The steeplechase was immensely enjoyed by tlte spectators, the majority of the horses running well bunched and fencing cleanly. Frank Me's win came in the nature of a surprise and his owner profited little by the victory. Jockey Lawless sustained a fractured collarbone when he was unseated from Jolo at the first obstacle. Owner Bratton was dissatisfied with Porter's handling of Greenbrier and complained to the .judges of tlie rider's action in pulling the horse up for no apparent cause A rumor was going the rounds today that Fred Cook intends to sell out his entire racing establishment and quit the business for some time. It is said that he will in about three weeks dispose of all the horses owned by him at present. This will include Minnie Adams and all the yearlings' recently purchased by him. The yearlings will be sent to New York and sold by auction. Mr. Cook wonld not affirm tlie rumor, but those closely connected gave it as their belief that the horses owned by him would be disposed of. J. S. Bratton lias received an order from the U. S. Government to ship as soon as possible ."00 mares and geldings to tlie Philippine Islands, where they will le used for cavalry purposes. -.Coupons for .theu summer tueejingof thirty-three days were issued today to horsemen.' "" To accommodate the extra bettors an additional dollar liooth was placed on the lawn just outside the betting shed. Out Salem Purses and Admission Fees: Bostonians Seeking Quietude Find It at Rockingham Park-Hard Rain and Heavy Track CUT SALEM PURSES AND ADMISSION FEES. Bostonians Seeking Quietude Find It at Rockingham Park Hard Rain and Heavy Track. Salem, X. II., July 4. A crowd of large proportions principally from Boston visited Rockingham Park today. Some came by train and others in automobiles. A considerable number had fled from the city to escape the noise in celebration of Independence Day and these found peace and quiet at the track nesting In the wooded hills of New Hampshire. A heavy rainstorm of short duration came up just lieforc the tirst race, which rendered the track heavy. Following the rain there was a scrambling of owners to make withdrawals. In consequence, scratches were numerous and the fields small. An unusual incident occurred after the second race. Jockey C. Sheffield, who had the mount on Lilita in tills race, whipped the filly severely arter the linlsh. Tlie stewards were quick to notice this and the boy was called into the stand and reprimanded. Garner, the rider of Rebo, in the fifth race, lodged "a claim of foul against Colonel Bartlett, but it was not allowed. Beginning tomorrow the value of the overnight purses will be cut in half. The price of admission will also be cut. Heretofore admission for men has liceii $1.50 and women $1.00. After today men will lie admitted for $1.00 and women r0 cents. This is in line with the management's campaign of education here. The sheriff of the county, with several of bis deputies, was on hand today. They found no infraction of the law relating to betting. Sheriff Corliss announced that lie is satisfied that the track Is being conducted according to law. Out of six carded to start only four faced the barrier in the Stock Exchange Handicap at one mile, for three-year-olds, the day's feature. The track just suited Yazd and lie won in a mild drive Willi Lotus Eater second. The latter was conceding twelve pounds to the winner and it was apparent this Impost was a little too much for the Barbarity Stable's colt. Afrie Jewel, belonging to J. A. Drake was a poor third. Hitchcock Takes an Appeal HITCHCOCK TAKES AN APPEAL. New York, July 4. I'. R. Hitchcock has taken an appeal from the decision of the stewards of th.? Coney Island, Jockey Club in the matter of his protest against Go Between's description in the Suburban Handicap and likewise the Commonwealth Handicap. The Jockey Club stewards will pass upon the appeal. Tlie committee of veterinarians oluciallv appointed to examine tlie Shields horse have not made their report public as yet. There is. however, little doubt now that Go Between is a stallion. In substantiation of tlie claim of John E. Madden that tlie castrating knife has never been applied to Go Bel ween, the records have been carefully gone over. It has been shown that Go Between bade his debut on the turf in tbe colors of Captain S. S. Brown at Ixmisvillc, Ky.. on May 10, 100-'i. It is claimed that lie was entered in that race as an entire horse. His next start was at the Harlem track, Chicago. June 11. 1003. It is claimed that lie was entered in that race also as an entire horse. His next start was at Hawthorne track, Chicago, September 18. 1903. In that race he finished second to Chockayotte and it is claimed that he was entered as a gelding. Tlie records of these western tracks for tiiose dates will probably be produced here before the ease is ended. KolK?rt Tucker, who trained S. S. Brown's western string at the time, has been called upon to explain why the description of the young racer was changed between the months of June and September when there had been no operation performed. Wild Range Wins the Steeplechase: Independence Handicap Is Taken Easily by Red Leaf. Buffalo, N. July 4. The largest crowd that has ever been within the gales of Kenilwortli Park crowded tlie grandstand, lawns and clubhouse balconies today to witness the running of the best card presented by Secretary John Boden since the opening of the meeting. Fully 12,000 people were in attendance. The last of tlie serial steeplechase handicaps was won by Wild Range. He carried 100 pounds and won in a canter; Ligero was next best and got second place easily. Bob Murphy, which, coupled with Ligero, was settled on as the real tiling, stumbled at the eighth jump and unseated his' rider. From there to the finish Wild Range had the race to himself. The sorest disappointment to the talent came in the Independence Handicap at a mile and an eighth. It was whispered around that Bed Leuf was not good and that Soufriere could beat her doing anything and tlie bulk of (he money went on tlie Inspector B. mare as if it was all over. When tlie price on Bed Leaf went to 25 to 1, J. O. Keene and Ids followers sent their money in with the result that the post odds were 11 to 5. Bed Leaf was slow at the start, but when she did get into her stride, she easily took command and won tlie race in a canter and the good thing Soufriere just did last long enough to beat Nonsense a half length for third place. William Garth today sold Kassil to Al Stokes, of New York. The price is said to have lieen $2,."00. Sam Parmer was a visitor at the track today and says he is overrun witli applications for stable room at Fort Erie. What was perhaps the greatest day the Windsor track ever had 1" point of attendance was spoiled by a rainstorm of cyclonic proportions which visited the course shortly before the fourth race was called. Those who occupied seats in the front section of the stand were almost carried away by the high gale and were drenched by the heavy rain which swept the stand from end to end. It hailed hard for a while and altogether it was a disagreeable fifteen minutes to most of the spectators. The day's feature, tlie Essex Stakes, for all ages, was called just as the rain ceased. Only four faced the starter, two of them being three-year-olds. It was those two, Charlie Eastman and Shineon, which furnished the only sharp contest in the race. Charlie Eastman showed all of his usual speed and tried to make a runawav race of it, but lie could not shake off the Hendrie colt, which hung to him all the way and, under punishment, outgamed him. winning bv an eyelash. The race was a corker and Shineon's connections feel encouraged and will probably start him in the Canadian Derby, which is down for decision July 10, at Fort Erie . Apart from the stake and the storm, the only other incident worthy of notice was that despite the bad track conditions, the public managed to pick four winners, and those which were not the betting choices were well backed. The business in the ring was heavy throughout, but it is doubtful if the books laid' up anything. Dolinda, which rail in the sixth race is once more the property of W. Walker, from whom he was taken by tlie selling route by W. T. Anderson several days ago. Dolinda was lieaten today and Walker promptly claimed him for $925.
