DANDELION FALLS WITH JOCKEY MILLER IN RACE FOR COMMONWEALTH HANDICAP. Sir Huon the" Winner Go Between Is Withdrawn Jockey Club Allows the Hitchcock Protest-New York Racing News. Xew York. July 7. Jockey Walter Miller, the idol of metropolitan racegoers, had a miraculous escape from le!ng killed at Sheepshead Bay this afternoon when Dandelion, the favovite, went down at the h.ead of the stretch in the race for the Commonwealth Handicap at a mile and a quarter. A half dozen horses were immediately behind Dandelion when the accident occurred, and that both horse and rider escaped without sustaining even so much us a scratch, was considered wonderful. The accident was due to foul riding on the part of Brussel on Cederstrome and Dyne on Cairngorm. . These two formed a wedge into which Dandelion was forced. It was at the critical and deciding moment in the race, "Miller being intent on niakng his final closing sprint after having held Dandelion in reserve for the tirst mile. Experts agree that with clear sailing, the unlucky Hitchcock horse would have won. As it " was. Sir Huon, showing vast improvement over Ids preceding effort, scored the victory. The westerners backed Kam's Horn on the strength of a recent sensational trial, and jockey Perrine came in for general execration for his inferior handling of that horse. Aside from the big race, the card was one of the best of the meeting. The weather was ideal for racing and a crowd estimated at 35,000 persons was in attendance. Miller's vigorous ride was chiefly responsible for the success of the Belmont filly, Misgivings, in the Vernal Stakes. The heavily supported Soprano was badly messed about by Hagan. Court Dress withdrawal in tills nice occasioned general regret. Miller again distinguished .himself by landing the last race, over the grass course with the much Im-provctl- Kntree7imtting it all over his formidable : ' rn Itadtke, on Relgravia. The latter claimed foul against the winner, -which was not allowed. Jockey Eugene Ilihlebrand. just . returned from a successful career at Buffalo, was heartily welcomed at Shepsliead Bay today. He was to have ridden Kiiiiecrankie in the Vernal Stakes, but trainer Rogers elected to scratch her and place his dependence on her stable mate Killaloe, which, by the way, is the first foal out of Jinks, the full sister to Mesmerist, to race. General surprise was occasioned in turf circles over the withdrawal of Go Between at the last moment from the Commonwealth Handicap. F. K. Hitchcock's protest against the eligibility for this race of the celebrated Meddler five-year-old was sustained by the Jockey Club stewards who had leen appealed to as the court of last resort. Their ruling covers the entry of the Shields horse for this race only. Mr. Shields voluntarily withdrew him from the Bay Ridge Handicap, down for decision next Monday, owing to the excessive weight he is called upon to carry and also to avoid any possible con-llict with the turf authorities. He has been advised that Rule 57 of the Rules of Racing covers 'the case and that by the payment of the usual fee, said to be $10 for each stake or handicap, the entry of Go Between will 1k corrected. Ormonde's Right may not start again this season. Far West was claimed for $2,090 out of the last race on Friday by Frank Kelly. There were some new developments in the Bun-dooran case today; it seems that a man named J. !. Dorsey had trainee! the horse before he was brought east and pending the issuance of a trainer's license, had turned him over to Henry narris to handle. The stewards of the Jockey Club took action today in his case and ruled him off the turf. Today's meeting of the stewards of the Jockey Club was held in the apartments of James It. Keene in the Waldorf-Astoria and was attended by Mr. Keene, August Belmont, J. H. Bradford, F. R. Ilitchcock, H. K. Knapp and F. K. Sturgis. Five Favorites Are First at Latonia: Big Crowd Enjoys the Sport-Nicol Rides Threa Winners-John Carroll is Beasten FIVE FAVORITES ARE FIRST AT LATONIA. Big Crowd Enjoys the Sport Nicol Rides Threa Winners John Carroll Is Beaten. Cincinnati, O., July 7. The attendance at Latonia today, in view of the fact that there was nothing particularly attractive aliout the card, was surprisingly large. It was withal a pleasure hunting crowd and they seemed to have found what they were looking for, and dollars In addition, for five favorites were successful. Jockey Nicol returned from his brief visit to Chicago this morning and rode three winners. He might have had another had he been willing to hazard the rather uninviting opening that was afforded in the final furlong of the handicap race. However, he didn't take the chance and John Carroll, counted best by the speculators, finished third to Braden and Lady Esther. The defeat of John Carroll was a disappointment to the followers of the Corrigan colors, but there was some salve in the fact that la the previous race Alma Dufour had scored brilliantly, running the mile in l:39j. Only sixteen bookmakers drew In at today's ( allotment of stands. This was a decrease of four. Four field books were also In line today. There Is considerable complaint from speculators over the failure of most of the books to accept wagers of any consequence at the prices quoted ou their slates. The judges started an investigation today of the running of Harefoot in the steeplechase of yesterday. Among those quizzed was trainer Pierce, who has the horse in charge. He stated that Harefoof ran his best races with light weight up and also added that the horse bled badly on his return to the stable. J. H. Baker will ship his stable to Fort Erie tomorrow. C. Gill, now at Kenilworth Park, has wired for stable room here. Debar was worked after the last race three-quarters in impressive style In 1:14. Windsor's Spring Meeting a Success: Pendergast Rides Four Winners on the Closing Day Special Horse Train to Fort Erie WINDSOR'S SPRING MEETING A SUCCESS. Pendergast Rides Four Winners on the Closing Day Special Horse Train to Fort Erie. Delroit, Mich.. July 7. -Racing came to an end at Windsor this afternoon. The meeting has leeii a most successful one. The attendance on. the whole was large and the contests were keen. The only drawback was the poor service furnished by the Windsor Street Car Company. The racing today was of high order, the finishes being close and the lest horses in four of the races scoring victories. .Tocke.v Pendergast was in the limelight, riding four winners'. This boy has improved greatly and if he can keep up his present form, will be much in demand. What was perhaps the best race of the day was the handicap for three-year-olds and upward at one mile. Benvolio, the winner, ran a splendid race. He was always a keen contender and wore down Old Slone in the iinal strides, snatching a victory right at the finish. Mose Goldblatt and jockey Aulmchon will leave fof Cincinnati tonight. Goldblatt's horses will remain here until their owner decides where lie will race. Aubuehon will remain at Latonia until such a decision has been reached. A speenl train of express cars filled with horses will leave Windsor tomorrow morning for Fort Erie, arriving in the latter place in the afternoon. The splendid Sheepshead Bay meeting will conic to an end Tuesday and the midsummer meeting of the Brighton Ilea eh Racing Association will open Wednesday afternoon. It will be a racing week replete with Interest and in its course two of the greatest events of the year, the Lawrence Kcaliza-tion and the $2:5.000 Brighton Handicap, will pass into turf history. The main feat tire at Sheepshead Rav tomorrow will he the running of the ISay Ridge Handicap at a mile hurt a quarter, the names of the probable Ktarters appearing in tills issue of Pailv Racing Form. Tuesday, the last day of the June meeting, will bring nlxnit the decision of the second half of the Double Event and the valuable Lawrence Realization. All of the crack two-year-olds that contested the Jirst half of the Double Kvent are of course eligible for the second half and n list made up of Oraii, Water Pearl, Charles Edward, Ktlion, Ballot, Peter Pan. .Superman, Sewell, Bat Masterson, Faust and Fauinonok will probably furnish the winner. The Lawrence Itealization is the crack event of the east for three-year-olds and should he contested this year by an unusually large tield of speedy young horses. No three-year-old stands out alone this year as Sysonby did last year and while the championship is yet to lie decided there is no reason apparent why Accountant, Arklirta, Kuroki, Bohemian, The Quail, Ormondale, Vendor, Inquisitor and Perverse should not go to the post with outside possibilities in Bridgeman, Clark Grithth, Entree. Kast End, Jacobite, Ilolscher and Penrhyn. Unluckily Sir . Huon and Flip Flap are not eligible and Timber is reported laid up because of an Injury. Seemingly no less than ten should start and a line race is in prospect. At its first running, this event had nine starters. This has twice been equalled, but never exceeded, so that if ten starters should muster at the barrier, it would be a new mark in Lawrence Itealization history. Last year only four started, but then the all conquering Sysonby stood in the way. The opening clay ,nt Brighton Beach will be marked by the running of the Distaff Stakes for two-year-old fillies at live-eighths and the Brighton Mile for three-year-olds and over. Engaged in the Distaff are such speedy young things as Court Dress. Soprami, Clare Kussell, Dulcinea, Beinay, Adoration, Rarbary Belle, Barihgo, Froward, Saghalien, Yankee Girl and Dollie Dollars, besides a long list of dark ones, among them being Onnondale's more than half sisler Belle of Ormonde, a bay lilly by Orsihi Santa Bella. The Brighton Mile Is a weight for age affair and with Santa Catalina,' Flip Flap. Minnie Adains, Tokalon, Whimsical, Hamburg Belle, Security, Kuroki. Bohemian, Ormondale, Tradition, Halifax, Inquisitor, Bain's .Horn and Gallavant all ellgble, it Is apparent that, if the day is fair and the track at its best, a rapidly run mile will In? reeled oft. The Jamaica Stakes, a selling dash of six furlongs for three-year-olds and over will lie the feature of Thursday's racing. Aeronaut, Halifax, Diamond, Glorifler, Nannie Hodge, Dreamer, John Sumlskl, Pantouile, Sly Ben, Security, Burleigh. Delagoa,. Toots Mook, La Sorciere, Inquisitor. Fireball and Alencon being among the speedy ones nominated. Friday's program is. wholly of purses. Besides the Brighton Handicap, the Punchestown Steeplechase will be run off Saturday afternoon. It Is over the short course of about two miles with Champs Ely-sees, Flying Buttress. Kernel, Sandhurst, Jimmy Lane, Alamansor, Grandpa, Tom Cogan, Phantom, Black Hussar. Pontotoc, Ben Crockett, Balzac, Game Cock and Couimondale among the timber toppers engaged. The Brighton Handicap being of the guaranteed value of ?25,000, is the most valuable American handicap and Is sure to he contested by a fine field made up from Go Between, Barn's Horn, Dolly Spanker. Perverse, Inquisitor, First Mason, Cairngorm, Ormondale. Kiamesha. Merry Lark, Bull's Eye, Dr. Leggo. Kuroki. Bohemian, Dandelion, Hamburg Belle, Whimsical, Tokalon, Knight Errant, Agile, Flip Flap, Tiptoe and Glorl-lier. There is material for a grand race here, but it is not likely that Broomstick's record made in this event, of 2:02J for a mile and a quarter, will be eclipsed.
