PRICE 5 CENTS Accountant's Realization: Wins Rich Three-Year-Old Event in a Drive with Entree ACCOUNTANT'S REALIZATION WINS EICH THREE-YEAR-OLD EVENT IN A DRIVE WITH ENTREE. Second Fart of tho Double Event Goes Easily to Water Pearl E. R. Thomas Now Has Half Interest in Him. Now York, July 10. The Lawrence .Realization, richest of American Stakes for three-year-olds, and the second half" of the Double Event for two-year-olds, were the magnets that attracted thirty thousand persons to the beautiful Sheepshead Itay race course of the Coney Island Jockey Club on Its closing day. The occasion was sentimentally and, above all, financially joyous. With the solitary exception of Azelina, every winner was heavily supported by the talent and public alike. The sport was voted grand and the weather glorious. Just before the fifth race the spectators were treated to a pyrotechnic display, which preceded a cooling rain fall that gratefully tempered the heat. Diamond Jim Brady's $45,000 Accountant, ridden by Jack Martin, vanquished a brilliant field ot horses of his own age in the big race of the day over the trying course of one mile and five furlongs. Ills owner won out his purchase price in wagers alone. Indeed it is said that the corpulent New Yorker, sent in a $20,000 commission on the aptly named Filegrane Reckon colt and then hied himself to a closet in the rear of the grandstand and stayed securely locked in while the race was being run. The winner was always close to the early leaders and at the half headed Ormondale, drawing out into a clear lead on the turn and was only meanced right at tho end by the wonderfully improved Entree. Miller rode Bull's Eye into a close third. Ormondale, which showed less stamina tl'!iuiisn;il, was done at the mile.- In the second part of the Double Event, Water Tearl rehabilitated himself grandly and convincingly and showed that he is still at the top of the heap in ,the two-year-old division. With 129 pounds on his hack and ridden with a view of utilizing at the proper moment his superlative speed, the big Watercress colt, at the right moment, galloped away from such cracks as Peter Pan, Superman. Sewcll, Oran and Ethon as if they had been trained between the shafts of milk carts. Monfort and Miller again proved an Invincible combination when over the straightaway course. The steeplechase race sustained interest from start to finish and was won in a truly run race by Tom Cogan. The Woodlands-bred Azelina beat some fast selling plater in the sprint. Rye again brought the money home for the impoverished Tammany "push," and Onnta's asserted his superior class in n hard fought victory over the grass course in the hist Rice. George W. Langdon has engaged jockey W. Knapp to ride Klip Flap in all her engagements tills season. E. It. Thomas marked a renewal of interest in racing In a sensational way by acquiring yesterday a half interest in the two great two-vear-olds Water Pearl and Charles Edward for $50,000, and it is reported on good authority that the former owner of the great Hermis more than won out the purchase price on Water Pearl's victory in today's Double Event. Alex Shields has voluntarily withdrawn his horse Go Between from the Brighton Handicap, the richest of the trio of famous mile and a quarter handicaps. This was done in order to avoid the entailing any further action on the part of the Stewards of the Jockey Club in the event of a new protest arising regarding the eligibility of the Meddler live-year old. The scratching of the great little horse is keenly deplored in turf circles generally. Among horsemen the opinion prevails almost uiiautmously that the Suburban winner would have but 111 tie trouble annexing the rich Commonwealth Handicap, won by Sir Hiion, had he been allowed to start. J. E. Madden's three-year-old. The Quail, who has since the shelving of Burgomaster, been acclaimed the best of his age, and who was thought to have a mortgage on the Realization for several weeks, hit hlmseir in his last workout, cutting a deep gash on his right hind ankle. This explains his absence from the Lawrence Realization. There were exclamations of surprise at the appearance of Oran when lie paraded to the post in the second half of the Double Event. The brilliant Ossary colt, thin and dwarfed lesides the gigantic trio of opponents. Water Pearl, Peter Pan and Superman, looked as if he had been drawn through a knothole, only a wraith of the former sturdy and virile youngster that achieved so many important victories of late. Finds No Betting at Rockingham Park,: County Attorney, However, is Not in a Pleasant Frame of Mind-Oxford is Ailing nNDS NO BETTING AT ROCKINGHAM PARK. County Attorney, However, Is Not In a Pleasant Frame of Hind Oxford Is Ailing:. Salem, N. II., July 10. County Attorney Ratch-?ldor paid another visit to Rockingham Park this :irternMn. He said he had received information that betting was being conducted at the track. He was told that he was welcome to seek evidence of it. He went over the spacious grounds and admitted that there was no apparent violation of the law. He was not in a g'ood humor alxwt it, however, ami ileclared that he felt confident from stories told him that In some way such a thing was going on and that if it was not stopped, lie would arrest every liersou on the grounds. After issuing this proclamation the county attorney passed out of the front Kale, while the band struck up that popular ballad entitled "Why Don't You Try." As a matter of fact the Pinkertons have suppressed betting at the track and should the county attorney attempt lo put his threat Into execution an exciting time may Je looked for. Thirteen may be an unlucky number, but (1. L. Richards, of Boston, is not one who believes in the superstition. His chestnut filly Nellie Bum, winner of the National Guard Handicap of $1,500 for three-vear-olds at one mile and a furlong, the day's "feature, was named for a thirteen-year-old girl, and the illly won her first race today after finishing necond just exactly thirteen times. Nobody conceded her a chance with Zicnap and Penrhyn. The latter gave it up after half the distance had been traversed, whereupon Zlenap took command and, coming fast into the stretch, looked like the winner. Then Wiley' went to work on Nellie Burn and lauded her winner by a neck. In the first race Cherry Blossoms became fractious at the post and unseating Mclntyre, bolted for the Iilnev woods. The start was made without her. After his "race last Saturday Jimmy McLaughlin's liread winner. Oxford, contracted a bad cold, and now has a high fever. 1 Applause for Nicol and Alma Dufour: Corrigan Mare, Splendidly Ridden, Runs Another Fast and Game Race at Latonia APPLAUSE FOR NICOL AND ALMA DUFOUR. Corrigan Mare, Splendidly Ridden, Runs Another Fast and Game Race at Latonia. Cincinnati, O., July 10. In the mile handicap at Latonia today Alma Dufour ran one of the gauiest and best races of the season. Apparently beaten a furlong out, she'eame on and won in as supreme a test of thoroughbred courage as has been seen In a long time. She was favorite for the race and well backed. Nicol had the mount and he put up a ride that would have been a credit to any saddle artist. The liberal applause accorded him when he came back to the scales was well merited. Cottontown was the pacemaker .for nearly the entire trip. The time for the race was 1:3!). This was fast, considering that the track was at least one second slow. For the second time here this season, a 100 to 1 shot -scored when Minnie Johnson led' her company in the second race. She had enough suport from the small sieculators to force the price from 150 to 100 to 1. It was the mare's second start at the meeting. She had only gone to the post once previously since the winter season and that was at the Louisville spring meeting. She won a couple of races last winter at Algiers and, although she had been identified, the judges again had her vouched for by reputable turfmen before bets were paid. The defeat of the Corrigan fillies, Catherine II- and Margie, were hard blows to the talent. The victories of the favorites, Outwal and Marsh Redon, helped form followers out to some extent as did also that of Topsy Robinson. For rough tactics in the handicap on Major T. J. Carson, jockey Aubuchon was lined $25 and cautioned by the judges, hi the first race Aubuchon fell with Bedrlce on the way to the post and was' stunned. C. Fisher was substituted. Jockey 1). Boland was scheduled for. four or five mounts, including Outwai, but was excused on account of illness. C. C. McCatTerty lodged a protest with the judges against the payment of the purse to Minnie Johnson on the ground that E. E. Pratt was not her trainer, despite the fact that he is registered as such. He later withdrew the protest. Solvent lias been castrated and turned out. Pat Dunne is negotiating for the purchase of Friction. Western Turfmen down East WESTERN TURFMEN DOWN EAST. A great many reputable western owners who. if conditions now were as they were a few years back, would be racing their horses over the western tracks, are contributing to the attractiveness and prosperity of New York racing through having taken their stables east. They are welcome to the officials of the various racing organizations and are in all essentials the equals of eastern turfmen. The performances of Sir Iluon, Ram's Horn. Ethon. First .Mason, Sewell, Phil Finch, Nannie Hodge, King's Daughter, Colonial Girl. Tokalon, Bad News, lland-zarra, First Premium, Fountainbluo, Dashaway and other western horses have added greatly to the interest of New York racing and altogether the somewhat extraordinary accession of western owners lias been a highly beneficial factor in the way of contributing to the success of the sport on the Metropolitan tracks. But some of the baseball reporters who descrlle and comment on racing affairs for the New York dallies dislike the westerners. One of these newspapers recently published a long attack on western owners, turfmen and Ixiokmakers quite amusing, because of its supercilious assumption of superior morality and honesty in turf methods on the part of eastern turfmen and eastern bookmakers. Most of the article purports to be a monologue delivered by a "big bookmaker" and. In part, is a vicious diatribe against L. A. Cella, who seems to have disturbed and offended some of the notorious "Jlets." Further than to remark that Cella is a person who lias heretofore demonstrated conspicuous ability in the way of taking care of himself, that point is of no consequence to western turfmen, but the narrow-minded provincialism of such an article is. The fact is that the controllers of the turf in the east could, if so disposed, learn much of value from the west in the line or strict discipline, and those who control western racing would be benefited by emulation of the wise liberality or the east in financial affairs. Outside of details of management there is little difference. Eastern tiirfmeu are no lietter and no worse than western turriuen. In both divisions are many men of Integrity and lilli character and in both the Inevitable contingent of black sheep. Any ascription of superiority to those of either section is silly rot. One of the Puzzling Things ONE OF THE PUZZLING THINGS. "That beats anything I ever saw," said a well known horseman after Hermis had been knocked down to Alex Shields for $4,000 at Sheepshead Bay, last Saturday. "There Is one of the greatest horses that ever looked through a bridle going for a song, while an American goes over to France and pays $75,000 for Adam, for instance. It is a shame, that's all I can say." Decision is Expected Today DECISION IS EXPECTED TODAY. Cincinnati, O., July 10. Arguments in the appealed Injunction case ot the Douglas Park Jockey Club against the Kentucky Staje Racing Commission were heard In the United States Court of Appeals this morning. It Is expected that the court will hand down a decision tomorrow morning.. . Senator J. W. Bailey failed to appear as eounsel for the Racing Commission. Peter Sterling Wins Canadian Derby: La Londe Runs Away, is Not Caught and Causes the Making of a New Book PETER STERLING WINS CANADIAN DERBY. La Londe Runs Away, Is. Not Caught and Causes the Making of a New Book. Buffalo, N. Y., July 10. Before the largest crowd ever seen on the Fort Erie track, A. Brown & Co.'s Lord Esterling Lucrece colt Peter Sterling romped home the easiest kind of a winner in the Canadian Derby, which was the feature of the meeting's opening today. Jack Dolan was always the choice of the public and he was backed as if it was all over but the cashing. The short price of 9 to 10 was eagerly accepted by the wise ones and Peter Sterling was allowed to drift to 7 to 2. After a short delay caused by Goldmate, they were off to a good start with Henry Watterson leading for three-quarters of a mile. When he was challenged by Shlueou, lie gave it up and quit. Foley, on Peter Sterling, then loosened up a restraining pull and the Lord Esterling colt went to the front and remaiued there until the finish. Jack Dolan had no mishaps, had clear sailing and was well ridden. Shineon would have made a better showing under a better rider. The public had a shade the liest of it on the day in a speculative way, as five favorites and three well played second choices won. La Londe, while being taken to the paddock tor the seventh race ran away, went outside of the track and could not be found when the saddling bell rang and Judge Price ordered her scratched and twenty minutes for a new book. Jockey is Caught with a Battery JOCKEY IS CAUGHT WITH A BATTERY. At Denver on Saturday last, the closing day of the meeting at Overland Park, jockey G. Stevens, who comes from Texas, was ruled off the turf for life. While he was at the post on Banner Boy IV., he was found to have in hand an electric battery. The instrument was taken from him and the case reported to Judge Stebbins, who acted promptly uiider Rule 230 of the Western Jockey Club. S. S. Bernard, of Colorado Springs, and all of his trotting horses were ruled off for "fixing" a harness race. This is the end of harness racing under the auspices or the Denver-Overland Club. It has been announced that there will lie no more mixed meetings at Overland Park and that next year the runners will hold full sway. Answers to Queries ANSWERS TO QUERIES. Having no knowledge of the rules under which the racing was conducted, cannot answer positively, but it must be assumed that in the opinion of the judges it was no race until when the horses went the course for the third and final time and bets would be decided by that running. May Improve Ormonde's Right MAY IMPROVE ORMONDE'S RIGHT. Alex Shields says that Ormonde's Right, which Was recently castrated, will not be raced until the fall. "He is a tough customer," said Shields, "and Would have killed somebody in time if lie had not been operated on. He showed me some wonderful work in trials, but burned up a lot of my money because of his ugly disposition in races." New Dressing for the Bay Track NEW DRESSING FOR THE BAY TRACK. New York, Julv 10. Realizing that the Sheepshead Bay track is a trifle too hard. It Is the intention of the management to cover it with more loam before the opening of the September meeting. Trainers are outspoken against the general policy of hardening the local tracks In an effort to create new records. -v Dodson to Tain Public Stable DODSON TO TRAIN PUBLIC STABLE.. Lexington, Ky.. IN FOURTEEN DAYS 543 YEARLINGS BRING $407,785, AN AVERAGE OF $750.99. Only Eleven Sell for $5,000 or More Each Highest Price $15,000 Recapitulation of Totals and Averages, The summer series of thoroughbred yearling sales under the auspices of the Fasig-Tipton Company, at their Sheepshead- Bay paddocks, ended yesterday afternoon with the auction of the youngsters from Rancocas Stud in New Jersey. The sale period was from June 21 to July 10 and there were yearlings sold every week day save on June 30, which was devoted to an auction of horses In training and on July 2 and 3, which dates, were vacated by the sudden decision of James B. Haggia to defer the sales of 125 yearlings from his Elmendorf Stud In Kentucky, until the September period, which will embrace thirteen days, beginning on September 1. Exclusive of the Elmendorf lot, the total number of yearlings catalogued was 700; of these 543 were sold for an aggregate of $407,7S5, an average of $750.99 a most satisfactory result. In light of the chaotic conditions In portions of the west and east, this average which compares most favorably with those obtaining at former summer sales, may be really surprising to many. It was predicted in some quarters in the spring and summer of 1905 that the tracks at Chicago and St. Louis would have a most depreciating effect on the demand for yearlings, but it was not shown in the averages. Neither has there been any apparent lack of demand this year. Yet there Is room for speculation as to what the values might have been had there been no interruption to racing in any quarter. Fancy prices did not obtain. There was nothing fanatical about the buying. It was from first to last a solid, sensible market. This, in spite ot the Imputation that several of the choice ones- In: the California offering of J. B. Haggin passed to men who are believed to be his agents. There were doubtless many bargains obtained and there appears to be some of this sort in the lots bought by J. O. Keene, Harry Gardner, L. A. Cella, J. G. Follansbee, S. C. Hlldreth and Samuel Emery particularly. There were only eleven youngsters sold for $5,000 or more each. These were closely related to racehorses of high quality and, it is said, are good individuals. The brother to Jonquil brought the top price, $15,000. The half brother to Water Pearl and the brother to Teacress each brought $14,000. The price paid for the brother to Highball was $10,500, and Bonnie Star, the half sister to Blues and Blue Girl, brought $10,000.
