DARDEN'S FILLY WINS THE JAMAICA AND IS PROMPTLY BID UP. Dolly Spanker Is in Rare Good Form Tucker En-gincen Coup With Pcnarris Angler a Good Investment Easy for Halifax. New York, July 12. A big throng of turf devotees journeyed to Brighton Beach today. The present fiisciiiiitiug Mecca of thoroughbred racing was tilled to overflowing, with horsemen and race-goers from all parts of the United States. The card was well balanced and attractive, but lacking in Important stake features, there being only one of the lesser variety, the Jamaica, a selling affair at six furlongs, to be decided. The western iuare Nannie Hodge was successful in this and her loyal adherents all profited largely over her victory. The winner was bid up by an unknown from $1,100 to $2,200. but was bought in. The sport was inaugurated with a big "killing" on W. H. Brown's Penarris, tlie two-year-old half brother to W. Overton. Trainer Tucker and his following were able to secure odds of II) to 1 for several thousand dollars, owing to the counter plunge on Waterbury and the big general play on the receding Toddles, Botanist, Dashway ami Hyperbole. Angler has proven a lucky investment for George Odom. The Hindoo horse won the mile and a furlong selling race from ten competitors like breaking sticks. Halifax fooled Starter Dade into giving him a flying start and, as no apposition worthy of the name developed after that contreteuip, the Shields horse was able to literally walk iu. The fact is he was pulled up so abruptly that he only got home by a whisker, amid more excitement than yesterday's thrilling finish in the Brighton Mile aroused. The real feature of the program came witli the running of the mile and a sixteenth handicap, in which a sprinkling of turf stars were entered. Dolly Spanker's present form is well nigh invincible judging from the easy manner in which he disposed of such good ones as Dishabille, Far West, Bad News , and Blaudy. The usual upset was furnished by "Father Bill" Daly with Umbrella in the last. The big crowd chorused its disgust over the result. The limit was reached' when the former Keene filly won out In the last stride of the stretch drive sprint. Wallle Brlukwortli is here- with Sllverskln. "Doc" Bowell has arrived from Denver with his string, numbering ten. James Cooper with four head, hailing from Buffalo, is stabled at Gravos-oiiil. Romanelli is Punished for Four Reiding: Benvolio is Disqualified to the Favor on Bon Mot-Good Sport at Fort Erie R0MANELLI IS PUNISHED FOR FOUL RIDING. Bcnvolio Is Disqualified to the Favor of Bon Mot Good Sport at Fort Erie. Buffalo, N. Y., July 12. Four favorites, a second choice and two with lberal prices against their chances rewarded the speculatively inclined at Fort Erie today. The day was an ideal one for raciug and the track fast. A steeplechase over the short course and a handicap at a mile and a sixteenth were the features. Gold Run, always the choice in tlie betting, won the steeplechase easily. The handicap was the most interesting race to speculators, every horse in the race drawing support even to the outsider, Peter Paul, which was evidently well meant. Off In perfect alignment the five ran head and head for an eighth. Then Peter Paul shot out and it seemed as if he was going to make a runaway race of it. At the half mile he increased ills advantage to five lengths. Here little Schaller began taking him up and rated him two lengths in front as they entered the stretch when he was joined by Benvolio. Romanclli, who had the mount on Benvolio, began roughing It and bore in on Peter Paul and Bon Mot which had joined the pair. RomanelH drew his whip and struck at Schaller causing Bon Mot to pull up. Benvolio finished first by a length. After the race Davis lodged a claim of foul, which was allowed, and Bon Mot was placed first. The judges also fined Uomanclli $25 and suspended him for five days for rough riding. Broadcloth Lowers a Track Record BROADCLOTH LOWERS A TRACK RECORD. Salem, X. II., July 12. The ideal weather brought out an immense throng to Rockingham Park and they enjoyed a good afternoon's sport. The Fran-conia Handicap, of $1,000 for three-year-olds, at one mile, was a three-cornered contest, resulting iu the triumph of Broadcloth with Garner in the saddle. Broadcloth assumed a safe lead right at the start and never relinquished it. Ho clipped a quarter of a second off the track record, running tlie mile in 1:301. Tlie finish of the second race brought the spectators to their feet. In a field of four Big Store brought up tlie rear all the way until they were straightened for home. Then Tadlock made his move with tlie big colt and, swiftly passing his opponents, won by three-quarters of a length. No Evidence of Drugs Found NO EVIDENCE OF DRUGS FOUND. New York. July 12. In retaliation for "Frisco" Gardner's bidding up of Estimate at Brighton Beach veslerday, Robert Tucker claimed Clements which had finished second to Estimate under the Gardner culnrs. Carson Stumbles and Jockey Aubuchon Gets a Fall-Racing Gossip JOHN L. INGLIS WINS LAT0NIA FEATURE. Major T. J. Carson Stumbles and Jockey Aubuchon Gets a Fall Racing Gossip. Cincinnati, O., July 12. The running of the handicap at Latonia today developed a surprise. It was won by tlie lightly weighted John Jj. Inglis. The colt broke in his stride, had early speed to spare, opened a gap of three lengths along tlie back-stretch and increased this advantage with every stride, winning as his rider pleased by a half a dczen lengths In the fast time of 1:26$ for the seven furlongs. There was a bad looking accident at the start. Major T. J. Carson, which had tlie rail, stumbled just as the barrier went up and threw jockey Aubuchon. The boy got out of It without injury. , While the card looked promising, it was a disastrous day for speculators. Tlie only favorite to score was Heine in the opening race. This colt Is owned by C. Straus and quite a delegation of Lexington race-goers were on hand to back him. Mose Goldblatt's ten horses arrived from Windsor in good condition this morning. Jockey J. Mclntyre, who has been riding on the Caadian circuit for C. Gill, arrived here today and will be a decided acquisition to the local riding talent. Gill has been racing Platoon and a few other good horses at Buffalo and his string is expected in a day or two. A Fact Aptly Stated A FACT APTLY STATED. Winner B. f, bv Hen Brush Gingham (trained by D. Carter). Went to post at 4:50. At post 2 minutes. Start fair. Won driving; second and third the same. Umbrella, away well and skillfully rated, improved her position steadily anil got up in the last strii'e of a cyclonic stretch run to score a lucky victory. Yorkist was excessively urged to overhaul the pacemaker and, after Itelng carried out by the latter, drew clear in the last furlong and appeared all ovr the winner, Radtke beiug caught napping right at the end. Sallle K. maintained a forward ixwltlou throughout aiW was going fast at the end. Elf all was shut off early and had a rough joumev on the outride, but finished like a whirlwind and going fastest of all. Berwick, a grand looker and probably short, developed dazzling speed, but tired in the stretch and was surrounded and pulling up at the end. Victoria It., nearly left, closed a tremendous gap. Tony Bonero is very fast, but failed to stay. Narolle is reported fast in private trials. Scratched 62SSlJudge Post, 110; 03317 Knigut of Ivatmoe, 110; 03331 Star Cat, 107.
