CORE GARRY HERMANN GELDING LANDS THE ATLANTIC STAKES AFTER EXCITING RACE. James R. Keeno Shows Up Another Likely Youngster in Suffrage, the Medium of a Coup Big Crowd at Brighton Beach. New York, July 1C. There were nt least 13,000 people at Brighton Beach-today, notwithstanding the fact that It wan Holiday and the card was mediocre in the quality of its offerings. The Atlantic Stakes, a two-year-old selling affair at live and a half furlongs, was the feature of the card. On paper it promised little, but the actual race proved uxcltlng. J. C. Core, ridden by Sillier, was the heavily backed favorite and finally won out after one of the most desperate efforts to get up that has been seen hereabouts in years. Maiden jockeys disported themselves in the opening race, at a mile and a sixteenth, under selling conditions. Starter Dade took his time arranging an equable start. The fastidiousness of the starter in that respect in an affair of this kind proved highly amusing to the spectators. Devoting infinitely more time and attention to this motley band of "novices than lie did to the field In the Brighton Handicap, the starter was rewarded with one of the very worst starts ever seen anywhere. Yorkshire Lad proved the best and brought Englander his first brackets. Barney Schreiber's Earl Rogers should have been In the money. Kassil. at 8 to 5, received about all the hacking that was forthcoming for the steeplechase and he never gave his following a moment's doubt. The swaddled Yama Christy finished a late second. Withdrawals marred the mile and a sixteenth, handicap. Agile, for the first time this season, raced in winning form and met an unlucky defeat at the heels of Garnish. Orly, a slow beginner, had' not much chance to show what he Is capable of. In Suffrage, thi winner and medium of a big coup in the last race for three-year-old maidens, J. It. Keene uncovered an uncommonly good looking rlllv. by Voter out of Qucenston. Jofkej-Ji. (ixrhran was Jialled before the stewards utter' dismounting from Arlm'o in" the" third race'. He cut sharply across In front of the others at the start rind put the heavily backed favorite Arcite, as well as Tourenue, out of commission. Those who saw it expected to hear of his speedy fine and suspension, but it seems that the stewards. gave him the benefit of the doubt and let him oft on hearing his explanation, which was to the effect that he had found it impossible to prevent George S. Davis from darting over to the rail. The horse is known to be erratic and that saved the jockey and his backers. The .Metropolitan ring layers at Brighton were called i:pou today to make the heaviest settlements of the present season. The westerners have been fortunate of late, even the humblest of thtm seem to have money in plenty. Flip Flap was cut down in the Brighton Handicap, wliieh accounts for the elimination of this game filly as a factor in the last heartbreaking quarter,, where she was expected to shine. The Paget pair, Hamburg Belle and Cairngorm, lioth received cuts on their hind legs, which will put them temporarily out of commission. Lucien Lyne, in speaking of Hamburg Belle's race, said: "She wanted to go along the first part of the race and I did not. In the last part, when I wanted to go along, she did not." Captain Williams Sees Ram's Horn Win CAPTAIN WILLIAMS SEES RAM'S HORN WIN. New York. July 10. Captain Jim Williams of Kentucky, saw the race for the Brighton Handicap all right. When he was stopped early In the season because of the forfeits against him, Williams went home to Kentucky, leaving the horse With his son. The probability of a victory in the Brighton, however, proved too great a temptation for the old man. who took a train for this city on Thursday and sent word to some friends that he wanted to see the race. A badge was secured for him and Captain Williams got past the eagle-eyed Pinkertons on the gates. He went up in the grandstand and sat down, apparently secure in the belief that he would not be discovered. But when the horses were being saddled, he grew nervous and went down upon the bricu "lawn" near the judges' stand to get a better look at the horses as they paraded to the post. In a moment a hand was placed on his shoulder and Robert Pinkerton said to him in low tones: "Captain, you will oblige me by leaving the racetrack at once. It Is the Jockey Club's orders, you know." "All right, sir," was the quick reply. "I'll go." The old fellow started toward the gates and Pinkerton turned away. Then Williams hurried up into the grandstand, saw Rum's Horn win and departed iu a happy mood. As the race was worth $20,000 to the winner, the chances are that the unpaid forfeits will be made good by the son. so that the father can enjoy racing on the old footing. Phantom Light Wins Feature at Salem PHANTOM LIGHT WINS FEATURE AT SALEM. Salem. X. II., July 1C This was an off day at Rockingham Park and a small crowd was in attendance. The weather was ideal and the track fust. James Griffin's bay filly Phantom Light had no difficulty in capturing the Wellesley Handicap of $1,000 at five and one-half furlongs straightaway, for two-year-old fillies. She was in front all the way. The sixth race furnished the most exciting and closest finish of theday. Rockingham won by a short neck from Katriona. The other races were ordinary and lacking in interest. In the last race Hailcloiid was crowded to the rail at the half mile post and threw jockey Sheffield. The boy, however, was unhurt. John Carroll Runs a Splendid Mile: Carries 122 Pounds and Wins in 1:39 2-3 after Being Kicked in the Ribs JOHN CARROLL RUNS A SPLENDID MILE. Carries 122 Pounds and Wins in 1:39 2-5 After Being Kicked in the Ribs. Cincinnati, O., July 1C In the mile condition race, which was the feature of the Latonla program today,' Edward Corrigan's crack sprinter John Carroll, put up the liest performance he has shown this season, carrying 122 pounds and beating a speedy lot quite handily In 1:39(1. What made the race all the more notable was the fact that the colt was kicked in the ribs by Major T. J. Carson while at the post. He was outrun in all the early part of the journey and at the head of the stretch hardly seemed to have a winning chance. Responding gamely to Nicol's call, however, he gradually wore down the leaders and placed to his credit, all things considered, about the best mile that has been seen in the west this season. Sister Frances, which was favorite in the race, had been Industriously touted as the best thing of the day. Tills fast filly had shown some very phenomenal work, covering seven furlongs close to 1:26 and doing It with something in reserve. She was badly handled today and will show improvement. William Gerst's Stoddard was 'much the best in the steeplechase over the long course. He was reserved from the early pace made by St. Enoch and Slgmund and at the end had all the speed, winning as his rider pleased by five lengths from Slgmund. Gould was third, fifty lengths back, but was disqualified for running out at the last jump in the field, which gave Pierpont third money. St. Enoch and Wooldealer and H. M. P. fell. After Investigating the charges'of fighting in races against Nicol and Hall, the judges fined both jockeys $50 each and cautioned them that a repetition of the offense would mean a susiension. The horses handled by F. Bruhns, who died Saturday, will be taken In charge by various horsemen. H. Franklin will campaign Mcllvaln, Prince Ahmed, Javanese and two two-year-old fillies. J. C. Ferriss, Jr., will take Ocanya. Ousel and Myrrh. These are the property of J. G. Greener. J. Walters will take charge of Manfred and Velours will be turned out until next spring. The dead turfman's remains were sent yesterday to New York for burial. J. U. Strode was among today's visitors. He. says all his horses have been turned out and will be rested at Windsor until September 1. Dainty Dame was very sore when going to the post for the fifth race and, after her defeat, her owner announced that she would be given a long rest. . . Much interest-was manifested' fcvr-the-riinninReL-Orly at Brighton Beach. His defeat was costly to any number of speculators' here. J. O. Keene has been allotted . stable room and will ship here at once from Kcuilworth Park eight horses he has resting there. Jockey Scovllle will accompany the horses and do the riding for the stable. - Only Two for the Talent at Fort Erie ONLY TWO FOR THE TALENT AT FORT ERIE. Buffalo, N. Y.. July 10. Only two favorites managed to catch the eyes of the judges at Fort Erie today. Hyperion II. in the third race was the first winning favorite to gladden the hearts of the talent and Rusk in the sixth was the other one. The fourth race was robbed of some of Its interest by the withdrawal of Blondy 'and the' result proved disastrous to followers of the favorite, for the neglected Reside took the measure of the short priced ones, Jerry Sharp and Boola. OnardI, shipped here from Latonia, ran second in the second race' under a poor ride with the fancy price of 30 to 1 against his chances. The horses in training belonging to the estate of William Hendrle will be sold In the paddock at Fort Erie, Thursday next, at noon. The following are the horses to be sold: Light Brigade. Searfell, Blue Grouse, King's Guinea. Shineon, Chippewa, Glimmer, Partiality and Kelpie. Brand New was bid up $200 over his entered price of $500 after winning the seventh race, but was bought in by his owner. Rock Sand Now En Route to Kentucky ROCK SAND NOW EN ROUTE TO KENTUCKY. New York, July 10. Rock Sand, the six-year-old brown stallion, by Sainfoin Roequebrune, which August Belmont bought in England in April for $125,000, arrived here on the steamship Minneapolis this afternoon. The famous horse stood the journey well. Rock Sand had as fellow passengers on the trip, a dozen handsome Percheron stallions, consigned to another owner, but there was all the difference between the quarters of the Belmont racer and those of the draught horses that there Is between the accommodations of a first-class passenger and a traveler in the steerage. Rock Sand occupied a carefully padded stall amidship of the vessel where the vibration and the rolling were at a minimum. Mr. Belmont was on the pier waiting Kock Sand's arrival. The horse was led out on the pier where his owner looked him over approvingly and then the animal, accompanied bjr the financier, was taken on a float to Jersey City, where he was put aboard a ear attached to a Pennsylvania train and despatched for Mr. Belmont's stock farm In Kentucky.. Maintenon Wins the President's Prize MAINTEN0N WINS THE PRESIDENT'S PRIZE. In a magnificent finish with Punta Gorda, W. K. Vanderbilt's Maintenon won the race for the Prize of the President of the Republic, at Malsons-Lafitte in France, Sunday. The winner was ridden hf J; Ranch.' The race was worth to the winner $20,000 and a gold cup. Mr. Vanderbllt having bred the winner, secured an additional $800. The distance of the race was one mile and nine-sixteenths and the time was 2:3S. There were eleven starters, the favorite being Moullue la Marchc, which finished unplaced. Mr. Vanderbllt is now securely at the head of the list of winning owners. Breaking Ground for New Track BREAKING GROUND FOR NEW TRACK. New York. July 10. New York. Julv 10. Newspapers here and away published this morning a report that C. E. Kowc would protest the victory of Rain's Horn In the Brighton Handicap on the ground of irregularity In the registration of ownership. This was denied today by Mr. Rowe. "I have at no time contemplated such action," said he. Go between Case is Closed GO BETWEEN CASE IS CLOSED. New York, July 10. It is stated here on good authority, that the Shields-Go Between case, as far as the Jockey Club Is concerned, is closed, the stewards having decided to make no further move toward penalizing the men who ran Go Between as a gelding before Shields got him out of a selling race a year ago. In England the other day a number of veteran turfmen were discussing this season's two-year-olds and the Derby of 1907. When SUeve Gallion's name was mentioned, the curious fact was brought out that only one black horse ever won the Derby. That was Smoleusko, in 1813. Slieve Gallion Is a black, and there were mauy in the group who were inclined to the belief that he will be the second black horse to win the blue ribbon. It was also observed that, though the house of Stanley has been so long connected with the turf, the St. Leger has never yet witnessed the victory of the black jacket and white cap. It has been almost as bad in the Derby, no Stanley having won it since 1787, when it was carried off by the famous Sir Peter Teazle. Answers to Queries ANSWERS TO QUERIES.
