XII. yO. 172. CHICAGO, FRIDAY, JULY 20, 1906. PRICE 5 CENTS Crowd Rises with a Roar: Suspects Trickery in the Steeplechase Race at Brighton Beach CROWD RISES WITH A ROAR. SUSPECTS TRICKERY IN THE STEEPLECHASE RACE AT BRIGHTON BEACH. Brookdale Nymph Wins the Brighton Oaks Chase-away Scores for H. B. Duryea Rye Wins for Seventh Time This Season. New York, July 19. During the running of the steeplechase nt Brighton Beach today there" was an unusual scene, in fact the occurrence was one of the most remarkable in the history of racing in the east. While all steeplechase races arc full of interest to the general public, the regulars usually watch them with indifference. But today it was different. The ring was on the qui vive to see what was coining off in the case of El Cuchlllo. This horse had signalized his debut through the field by running a close third to Delcanta at Sheepshead Bay and was justly entitled to the honor of being favorite against the motley and inferior company opposed to him. He was opened at 8 to 5 and the unsuspecting public backed the WIdener horse persistently. Yet the market price about him continued to soar until at post time the odds were 4 to 1. The result was that 10,000 pairs of eyes were glued to El Cuchlllo from the beginning to the end. As the horse, with the clearly defined red and white striped jacket of his rider, swept along on the extreme outside of his company, fencing superbly and fighting for his head, the crowd began to murmur. This gradually increased in volume as the horse and rider continued to zigzag over the course, both pulllri'-aga1hsteacli other-." Finally1 the' grraf tbrtmg rose and emitted a roar that could have been beard a mile away. The object of their wrath was seen to be dropping back steadily whea leginnlng the closing half mile. Then, at the last jump, ami just as the winner was entering the last furlong, he suddenly came with an extraordinary hurst of speed and earned third place in the last stride. Nothing quite so barefaced has been seen here In many a year, was the consensus of opinion. W. S. Vosburgh was the only occupant of the stewards stand during the running of this race and nothing developed In that quarter. Buttner who rode Kl Cuchlllo is a newcomer in these parts. Holman's fall in the steeplechase resulted in a broken collarbone. The Herman B. Duryea stable broke the ice with Chaseaway in the opening race for two-year-olds under selling- conditions.. This is the first victory of 1ie season for this expensive racing establishment. Mr. Duryea ignored the youngster completely, yet lie advised Davy Johnson to take a welching chance, adding jocularly, "You are just about due, Davy, and this is the opportunity of your life; don't neglect it." It was the right moment for a gigantic plunge, as the ring was in a mood to lay the limit against anything that the unlucky plunger might want to bet on. Brookdale Nymph won the Brighton Oaks of $7,500 from inferior opposition. The Whitney lilly started a prohibitive favorite, but did not win like one. Belle of 1'equcst menaced her earnestly midway of the stretch and Ballotta, which came from the rear, appeared to be going fully as well at the end. The layers were mulcted heavily by the western contingent over the victory of Bound Brook in the steeplechase. Rye, the most reliable letting medium of the year, again performed consistently iu the third race at six furlongs. Waller Miller was caught napping on Logistilla in the mile and a sixteetnh, giving way to Bobble Kean in the last stride. Itosemount, full brother to John Boden's famous mare Bosetliit, showed that lie was endowed with a fair share of speed by defeating a lot of good ones ot his own. age in the closing number on the program. The Chelsea Stable horses have gone to Saratoga. One division of the H. I. Whitney Stable, in--lndiiig Perverse, Old Faithful, Bat and several two-year-olds which have not raced, is now in Saratoga. John W. Rogers says the others will go up next Monday. The horses trained by A. J. Goldslioroiigli for Jl A. Bennet and "Whltey" Lang-don. Including Flip Flap, will be shipped Saturday. Mackay Buys Three Noted Mares MACKAY BUYS THREE NOTED MARES. Lexington, Ky., July 19. The thoroughbred marcs Hatasoo, Relna and Disadvantage have been sold by Julius Bauer to Clarence II. Mackay, and will join his band of matrons at Kingston Stud. Reina has a colt by Mesmerist, Hatasoo a colt by Previous, and Disadvantage a filly by Mesmerist. The two former were bred this season to Meddler and the latter to Standing. The price was said to be $10,000. Reina is the only mare, save Tokalon, that ever won the Brooklyn Handicap. "Big Bill" is to Takes a Rest "BIG BILL" IS TO TAKE A REST. New York, July 19. Willie Knapp Is to have a vacation. Edward R. Bradley, has come to the conclusion, that the jockey has had too much work. Knapp accordingly has been' ordered to make himself scarce for a week anyway, and for two If he feels that he needs that much rest Knapp has been steadily at work for five years. Mr. Bradley attributes Knapp's failure to ride to form recently to staleness. The boy appears to have lost his wonted address and courage. Two Latonia Sprinters Shy on Speed: Form Followers Wonder as to the Betting About Lady Esther and Funiculaire TWO LAT0NIA SPRINTERS SHY ON SPEED. Form Followers Wonder as to the Betting About Lady Esther and Funiculaire. Cincinnati, O., July 19. The fourth race at Latonla today resulted in one of the closest finishes of the meeting, the three placed horses passing the judges scarcely more than noses apart. It was a good betting race and there were some queer angles to the speculation also. Lady Esther and Funiculaire were considered to have alwmt an equal chance at the weights and it was thought that one or the other would win, but ring operations had not gone very far before it was plain that something or-other had happened to the pair. Opening at about S to 5 their prices went back so rapidly that some wondered whether or not they had lost a leg or two each. The heavy support of Major T. J. Carson, backed down from S to 1 to 4 1-2 to 1 at post time, had something to do with the state of the market, of course. It was a spirited race from start to finish, between Miltiades, Major T. J. Carson and Meadowbreeze. The Major stood the final drive gamest and had his neck In front when crossing the finish, a like margin separating .Miltiades from Meadowbreeze. Judge Macfarlan, dissatisfied with the showing made by Lady Hsther, had jockey Riley up to explain. The boy said the filly only had fair speed for three furlongs, tiring badly thereafter. Funiculaire showed scant speed and went wide throughout. He made up some ground near the end, but his race was a poor one. It should not be considered ,in future fignres. The defeat of Marsh Redon was the chief incident of the racing. He was at 21 to 1 in the betting and was beaten handily by Bitter Brown nt 40 to 1. Marsh Redon pulled up very lame and this was considered the cause of his defeat. Junco, owned by G. J. Long, was badly cut dovn in the first race and had to be destroyed. Her right hind tendon was severed. Starter Holtman's effort In the closing race was a -rroor6iHfiid-itn'oIpItatetItondemoiitrnfefriin? the spectators. Marshal -Ney was practically left at the post. Jockey T. Taylor, while riding Glassfull, was badly crowded into the fence and had a couple of his toes mashed. Hevy Dust Blinds Riders at Fort Erie: Four Horses Go down in the Sixth Race-Jockey Feicht is Seriously Injured HEAVY DUST BLINDS RIDERS AT FORT ERIE. Four Horses Go Down in the Sixth Race Jockey Feicht Is Seriously Injured. Buffalo, N. Y., July 19. In spite of the fact that it was sprinkled the lest part of the night, the Fort Erie track was deep in dust. This seriously interfered with the running of the races and was the cause of an accident that may have a serious ending. Fourteen went to the post In the sixth race at a mile. On the first turn there was a jam. When the dust cleared away It was found that four horses had fallen. Feicht, who had the mount on Celebratlou, was the most seriously Injured. He was carried off the track in an unconscious condition and after a hasty examination by the track physician was sent to a hospital. The doctor thinks that the loy's back Is broken and that he is hurt internally. Harvey Jackson, who had the mount on George P. McNear, also sustained injuries that will lay him up for several days. Jockeys Lee and A. Martin got off lucky with a dust bath and a shaking up. Romping Girl stumbled at the half-mile post and unseated Hudlin. He was not injured. The boys on Felix Mozzes and Julia M. pulled up to avoid such an accident as that in the previous race. Jockeys Helgesen and Foley engaged in a fight with whips in the jockeys' room after the second race today. The judges investigated the matter and fined them each $2."!. John Marklein, sold Prytania today, to J. L. Sraythe, of Toronto, for $95. C. Steubenbord, Jr., disposed of Father Catchem to A. W. Maybee, of Toronto, for $000. F. Luzader, John Marklein and J. O. Keene shipped their stables to. Latonla today. J. D. Atkin sold to G. H. Neal the two-year-old gelding Fire Alarm, by Bathampton, the price being private. Joe McLennan was the purchaser of the Hendrle stable equipments at $150. Two Purses for Schulte Horses TWO PURSES FOR SCHULTE HORSES. Salem, N. H., July 19. Ladies' Day brought out a crowd of over 0,000 people to Rockingham Park today. The fields were small, but select and there was good siMirt. The feature of the card, the Monad-nock, of $1,000, at one mile for three-vear-olds, went to W. F. Schulte's Lilita. Jockey Criinmins held her in restraint until three-quarters of a mile had been covered, when he sent her to the front, the Florist filly winning handily by a length. This was the second victory for Mr. Schulte during the afternoon. SCienap, under an admirable ride from Crimmius, won the opening sprint. Crlmmlus waited with her until near the field stand, where he rushed her to the front and then cantered home an easy winner by three lengths. California King took his fifth successive brackets today when he cantered home in the third race. Neptunus ran today in the colors of Mr. Chetland, that gentleman having bought the gelding before the fifth race, which was won by Rebo. Pronta got tangled In the barrier and was pulled up. The first run-up of the meeting occurred in this race when Rebo was bid up to $2,000, trainer Wishard retaining the gelding with the customary $5 advance. The mile was run in the good time of 1:381. Johnny Dyment's Simon D. graduated from the maiden class by winning the closing race. Latonia Form Chart LATONIA FORM CHART. COVINGTON, KY., July 19, 1906. Thirteenth day. Latonla Jockey Club. Docile clear of interference, dashed Into the lead after going three-quarters and, favored by good racing luck held the others easily safe In the final drive. The Mate, lucky and well handled, saved ground when turning into the stretch and hung on well In the last quarter. Marshal Ney, almost left, had to o'alI around the others, finished fast and ran a winning race. Stroud suffered from much interference throughout and had to be pulled up on the stretch turn and go wide, ran a good race and, with clear sallin" would have won. Pinaud, away poorly, ran a fairly good race. St. George Jr. showed speed for a half, but tired badly thereafter and interfered with Stroud. Pepper, of the Meadowthorpe Stud, Lexington, Ky., Is' In Chicago for a day or two on business. "There Is scarce a breeder alive but thinks Ills yearlings are the best and it is the most natural thing in the world for him to declare this year's crop better than that of the preceding year," yesterday afternoon, "and I said Colonel Pepper suppose I am no exception to the rule. The ycar-- lings at Meadowthorpe this year, I regret to say, part Hilles. I never could arc for the greater understand it thoroughly, but these latter day trainers have a most unreasonable prejudice against miles generally. It Is due to this prejudice that the prices for fillies average lower than for colts, hence my regret that there are not more yearling colts at Meadowthorpe. The star of my lot, I think,, Is a filly by Ben Strome, out of Lady Pepper, by Hindoo. We have named her Katherine Carson, "after the daughter of Major T. J. Carson, of DIx-iana, the home of Ben Strome. Sho is a lieautl-futy- 89l W ft?i-9" & P'WWfc 1 Is admirable. I have refused $5,000" for" her. The one that holds my fancy next tq,KathcrInc Carson Is the filly by Mcallowthorpe, out of Qucenle, by Hlmyar. Queenie, you know, is the dam of Black Venus and Black Venus was by Kantaka, so this filly, being by Meadowthorpe, is nearly a full sister to Black Venus. We call her Brown Venus. I have not made up my mind whether I will sell these yearlings by auction In September or hold them over until their two-year-old form and dispose of them privately after they have shown something. The sucklings at Meadowthorpe are nearly all by Resolute II. This Is the Australian-bred horse brought to tills country in the fall of 1902 by Eugene Leigh. He is by Trenton, out of Umiila, and was a good racehorse In the Antipodes. Ills first starter In this country Is Snow, the good colt in the stable of W. II. Snyder. These Resolute II. youngsters arc' well made, bright and active and I will be sadly disappointed if they do not show up first class. I bought Resolute II. to. take the place of old Kantaka. Kantaka did not drop dead, as Was reported at the time of ills demise. The old fellow was so enfeebled and so emaciated that Mrs. Pepper had him chloroformed to end Ids sufferings." How Ram's Horn Got His Name HOW RAM'S HORN GOT HIS NAME. Afler the victory of Ram's Horn in the Brighton Handicap, a New York newspaper man asked W. S. Williams, the youthful owner jmd trainer of the son of Bute Aunt Tessa, how lie had happend to so name this good racehorse. "Well," said he, "I had sciit in several oilier names and was told by the Registrar that each had leen previously claimed. The question got to be one of moment with me. I consulted some of my friends: They suggested that I name liim 'Wink,' which is my nickname. I didn't like that. I had been up to Louisville and was returning to our home at Spring Station one afternoon when a lady in the train handed mc a paper and said: 'Read that, young man; It will do you good.' I took the paper, and it was that religions weekly called 'The Ram's Horn,' and published, I think, somewhere near Louisville. I didn't care very much about reading it, as I was tired, although I suspect It had sonic pretty good things in it, but I took a good look at the cover. "11 was all in bright colors, and had a picture of the archangel Gabriel, or some being like him, riding bareback on a fine-looking, prancing horse and blowing a long, curly ram's horn. It was a fine picture, and I couldn't get it out of my mind. Finally I got the notion that I would name my colt Ram's norn, after the paper, and I did and have never been sorry. I don't reckon the lady that gave me the paper, nor the people who publish It, care very much for horseraclng, but I haven't yet been asked to change the 'horse's, name, and they'd have to get out an injunction to make mc do it." Tommmy M'Gee Visits Hawthorne TOMMY M'GEE VISITS HAWTHORNE. Tommy MeGeo arrived in Chicago from Latonia yesterday morning arid will return to the Kentucky, track tonight. "Sly visit to Chicago at this time has no significance," said lie. "I am here merely to have a day with my family and to look over Mr. Corrlgan's yearlings at Hawthorne. There arc 09 of these youngsters, all told, and they are a mighty good looking lot, I toil you. It Is not Mr. Corrlgan's intention to train and race them all. He will sell off some of them, but he is having a deal of a time making up his mind which to keep and which to sell." Answers to Queries ANSWERS TO QUERIES.
