STO. 181. CHICAGO, TUESDAY, JULY 31, 1906. PBICE 5 CBKTS Consistent Wins Feature: Takes Given Cove Handicap from Company of Good Sprinters CONSISTENT WINS FEATURE. TAKES GLEN COVE HANDICAP FROM COMPANY OF GOOD SPRINTERS. Steeplechase Furnishes a Thrilling Struggle Foun-tainblue Makes Eastern Horsemen Take Notice Angler Scores Fifth Successive Victory. New York, July SO. Consistent, lightly weighted and particularly well served by a mild shower of rain that dampened the track, just before the start of the Glen Cove Handicap, the feature at Brighton Beach this afternoon, showed her heels to her 'company of sprinters which included Inquisitor, King's Daughter and La Sorciere. There was plenty of support for the misnomered Galore filly. Jack MeGlnnls won a big wager at odds of 10 to 1. To Inquisitor, the runner-up, belonged the lion's share of merit in the race. Impeded and pocketed during the middle, the Inspector B. three-year-old was delayed overlong and failed to get up in the short homestretch. Jockey Miller gained applause from 15,000 spectators, when he scored on Pythla In the opening race; The ambulance was the chief thing In evidence during the steeplechase, being kept busy throughout that terrific contest, darting here and there, picking up tumbling riders at the various jumps. Thomas Hitchcock's Tom Cogan won out at the' end of a thrilling struggle that kept the big crowd in n wild state of excitement from start tp finish. Foul was claimed against the winner, but not allowed. C. C. Smithson, owner of Bound Brook, boosted the winner from $S00 to $1,000, the stable buying him In for an additional $3. Founralnblue's victory in the two-year-old race, rit' five" and a half furlongs, put the seal of greatness on that splendid youngster. The time, 1:0GB, and the easy manner of accomplishment, electrified everybody who saw it. The horsemen present were a surprised lot and the majority of them ndjourned to the paddock to look him over and ponder over the outcome of .a meeting between him and Salvidere. John K. Madden remarked that the Oddfellow colt was the finest looker shown in public this year-Angler, of genuine stake horse caliber, but recently masquerading as a selling plater, galloped on- with the mile and a quarter handicap with perfect ease under a most confident-looking ride and tills, notwithstanding that he was opposed by Coy Maid, the sensational winner of the Test Handicap, in which she vanquished some of the best horses In training. It is said that Alex Shields applied for stable room at Saratoga for Go Between and the remainder of his string of horses, but was informed that by reason of the fact that he had been suspended from racing until August 15, the application has been denied until the term of his suspension expires. Ruby Star, owned by A. S. Snyder, and a starter in the first race bolted the reverse way of the track while parading to the post. The stewards ordered-her entry refused In future. Jockey Herbert was fined $10 for tardiness in weighing out to ride Charles G. Gates. The big canvas barrier which shut out the poolroom men at -the backstretch was blown down" today. The barrier will go up again tomorrow as soon as the supports are straightened. Twenty-Nine Stallions in the Breeding Bureau TWENTY-NINE STALLIONS IN THE BREEDING BUREAU. The Jockey Club has progressed rapidly with Its Breeding Bureau project In New York state. At a meeting of the Jockey Club Stewards April 12 the project was inaugurated and Messrs. U. K. Knapp, Clarence II. Mackay, Harry Payne Whitney, Thomas Hitchcock, Jr., and Henry T. Oxnard were appointed a committee "to establish a Breeding Bureau, by which thoroughbred stallions may be placed in various counties of the state of New York, under such regulations ns may be deemed proper, and to that end authority be given the committee to draw from the treasury of the Jockey Club a sum not exceeding ten thousand ($10,000) dollars." The committee announced that it would rely upon donations for the stallions necessary; titat they would be placed in the care of reliable and responsible men, and that the nominal service fee of $10 per mare would go to the caretakers of the respective stallions to be expended for feed and other needs "of the sires. ,At the end of July twenty-nine stallions had been donated to the Bureau and twenty-five of them have been assigned to stations in twenty-three of the sixty-one counties in the state of New York, as follows: . An unusually large Monday crowd crossed to the Canadian side to witness the running of an ordinary card of six races at Fort Krie. Only one favorite was fortunate enough to catch the Judges' eyes first. The other winners were at comfortable odds. Boola was the winning favorite. She had no trouble in sprinting away from her company and won In the easiest kind of manner.. F. B. Shaw was well backed by his stable connections at 20 to 1. He was in motion when the barrier was released, shot to the front and was never headed; winning in a common canter. J. W. Uusswurm, secretary of the Tennessee Breeders' Association was a visitor at Fort Erie today. George Hendrle has secured second call on the services of jockey Wishard. He began riding for that stable today. All Roads Lead to the Spa ALL ROADS LEAD TO THE SPA, New York, Jnly 30. Although many horses have already been shipped to Saratoga to be prepared for their engagements at that track, the general exodus will take place this week. Between today and Saturday dozens of cars will leave the Long Island tracks daily loaded with horses, many of which are simply destined for the" rest cure and rreshening-up process at the Spa, preliminary to their strenuous fall campaign. The J. R. Keeue string was shipped to Saratoga during the night. The most prominent stables already on the ground are those of Barney Sehreiber, 11. P. Whitney, J. A. Drake, P. T. Cblnn. L. A. Cella, John Sanford and Ralph Black. Thomas Welch leaves tomorrow night with the big Newcastle Stable, owned by Andrew Miller. Jockey" Miller goes 'along and will not be seen in the saddle again at Brighton after Tuesday. Good Investment for Booker GOOD INVESTMENT FOR BOOKER. Tyron, which recently won two good races at Brighton for A. Booker, cost him $175. The horse has bad legs which are kept in racing condition by salt water baths. Latonia Favorites Fail: Shining Star, in Last Race, the Only Successful First Choice LATONIA FAVORITES FAIL. SHINING STAR, IN LAST RACE, THE ONLY SUCCESSFUL FIRST CHOICE. Hayes' Plans for Coups Miscarry Chanee in Meg-sender System Treubel Is Again in Good Standing and Rides a Winner. Cincinnati, O., July 30. The defeat of sir favorites In succession was a hard blow to followers of form here this afternoon and enabled the eighteen bookmakers to reap a harvest. Shining Star, which scored in the closing race, afforded the talent one for the day and that only after a heartbreaking struggle through the stretch, which seemed for a time would result In the favorite's defeat. By a splendid ride on the part of NIcol, however, victory came in the final stride. Close finishes characterized the running o all the races and the winner's margin in most cases was of the hair line variety. Surprises, of course, were plentifuL The victories of Elude, La'dy Arion, Potter and Search Me were considered fluky in the extreme. T. P. Hayes was again In evidence. He attempted betting coups with Redgauntlet In the second race and Funiculaire . in the third. Both were defeated. A combination of accidents mainly caused Redgauut-let's defeat. He was much the best and with decent handling would have won by a handsome margin. Field Lark's defeat In. the sixth was also due to interference. Fine weather again attracted a big attendance to the course. Before the racing began the judges announced that J. II. Young, recently-suspended for-the Inconsistent running of Whlppoorwill, had been restored to good standing and entries from his stable will be accepted. There was a change in the messenger service system today. The pool boys used to receive a percentage of the money they brought into the ring. They are now required to pay a straight fee of $10 dally and furnish a bond of $300. Nineteen messenger boys complied with the new regulations this afternoon. The judges were notified by Secretary McAllister of the American Turf Association that the executive committee had granted Jockey Treubel a license and lie would be permitted to ride. Treubel had the mount on Ethel Day and brought her home a handy winner. He also rode Posing, which finished third. "Jack" Baker will have charge of Cottontown and Red Light and race them at Saratoga. Helena C, also owned by P. J. Mlliett, will be sent home and turned out until fall. A medical examination made yesterday shows that jockey Obert sustained severe Injuries by the fall with Lady Saylor some time ago and which resulted in the filly's destruction. Obert has been taken to a local hospital for treatment. Starter Holtman stated that the bad start In the first race was due to My Gem's action In bolting into St. Denis, which in turn caromed into Estrada Palma. The latter also left the post kicking at My Gem's head. James Arthur has decided to ship Gus Heidorn to Saratoga. S. II. Kunz, becoming dissatisfied with the poor riding of W. Allen, has decided to give that youngster a rest. Salvidere to Start in Saratoga Special SALVIDERE TO START IN SARATOGA SPECIAL. New York, July 30. Salvidere, winner of the Brighton Junior Stakes, will start in the Saratoga Special. Captain W. Harry Brown had named Salvidere, Penarris and Elfal for his subscription of $1,000 to the famous Saratoga "jack pot." When these colts were sold recently, Frank O'Neill, who became the owner of Penarris, bought the subscription to the Special. O'Neill had reached the conclusion that Penarris is not good enough to warrant a risk of $1,000 in starting him against such colts he would meet in the Special, so when Thomas H. Hitchcock, Jr. proposed the purchase of the subscription for Salvidere, O'Neill promptly let him have it. Mr. Hitchcock also holds the Madden subscription for Golf Ball, but it is not likely that this youngster will be seen in the Special. His showing In the Brighton Junior seems to have settled this. He could not get within hailing distance of his stable companion. Twenty Leading Jockeys TWENTY LEADING JOCKEYS. In the race for the jockey honors of 1900 Walter Miller still leads by a margin of eight over Dave NIcol. A number of Jockeys' licenses were granted, but the chief business transacted related to the recent rough riding in races through the field. The stewards finally decided that In future Jockeys who indulged In foul tactics would be ruled off the turf without even a warning. It was also decided to Insist upon a full representation of stewards In the stand whenever steeplechases ore run In future. m xemm Vingut Wins His Endurance Wager VINGUT WINS HIS ENDURANCE WAGER. New York, July 30. Harry K. Vlngut won his wager of $1,000 with Edward L. Norton that no local man out. of training could ride 100 miles on horseback in 24 hours. Vlngut had a lot of horses sent down to Belmont Park on Saturday and he followed in the evening with a party of friends. He started on his ride at 4:40 Sunday morning. Norton sat on a veranda of the clubhouse and watched him. Vlngut used four western-bred polo ponies and a horse for the ride. He used an English saddle and mounted and dismounted without assistance. When he retired from the track for breakfast at G:50 he had covered twenty-five and one-half miles. He resumed ridiug at 8:10, and by 12:45 had covered an additional forty-three and one-half miles. He had done this in four hours and twenty-five minutes, or an average of six and one-fifth minutes to the mile. Vlngut was delayed because a thunder storm came up and the rain soaked the track, and it was 3:40 when he. resumed his ride. The horse and ponies showed signs of being tired during the last trip, hut at 0:30 he completed the journey, going an extra half mile. Vlngut had made the journey In twelve hours and forty-eight minutes, including rests. The actual time on tbe track was nine hours and twenty-three minutes. He showed no signs of being exhausted.. Fear Cella Influence in Ring FEAR CELLA INFLUENCE IN RING. The New York papers, keen to scream at any success by the Western "invaders," declare 'that the ring is monopolized by what they call the Cella bunch, which last Saturday had twelve "cx-Mcts" In the front row at Brighton Beach, six on the back line and twelve or fifteen more In the field. The Ccllas arc credited with an Intention to use all the "Mets" short of bank rolls and thus control the ring In the near future. Such a control is hardly in sight considering that last Saturday nt Brighton Beach there were 230 books In operation: eighty-five In the front row, thirty-two in the back line, and one hundred and thirteen in the field.
