PRICE 5 CESTTS Six in a Row for Angler: Odom's Son of Hindoo Wins the Handicap at Brighton Beach SIX IN A ROW FOR ANGLER. ; ODOM'S SON OF HINDOO WINS THE HANDICAP AT BRIGHTON BEACH. Jacquin Finds His Speed Sonoma Belle and Alta Farola Winning Long Shots More Bain and Mud. New York, August 3. These nro melancholy days at Brighton Beach, racing being conducted under extraordinary dreary auspices, but it takes more Hunt rain and mud to keep the faithful from the IMipular little beachcomler track. Not less than 12,000 racegoers saw an interesting card, albeit devoid of stake fixtures, decided today. That sterling racehorse, Angler, picked up 120 pounds and again made good in the mile and n furlong handicap. The time, 1:5.", was fast for the difficult footing. Tliis was the sixth successive victory of this skillfully manipulated Hindoo Alga four-year-old, and his connections are now riding the top wave of prosperity via the motor car route. The remarkably good price quoted against Odom's horse by the ring was due to the awful plunge on Corrig.tn. Yesterday Jacquin ran for "Sweeney." Today he was "Hawkins' horse" and easily accounted for the motley lot opposed to hint In the six furlong opening race. Sewell rode the heavily backed Hitchcock filly Fantastic very badly in the race following. The bitter feeling was Intensified when the judges appeared to have overlooked her for second place and awarded It to Laura A. Sewell was again execrated for his ride on Little Scout in the third. The betting on both the Bennett horse as well as on Tyron, the favorite, spelled forebodings of disaster. Both of these horses were late at both ends. K. II. MeC. Potter's line Flambeau filly. Belle of request, of, winch much was expected as a two-year-old may yet redeem her early promise, judging by today's effort. Despite unfavorable track conditions, she eanie away when called upon In the last quarter in the mile race lit such decisive manner as to Indicate thatshe can hold her own in much better company. Tlie closing race for two-year-olds furnished the usual upset. Alta Farola, ridden by "Mickey" Crimmins, scored a lucky victory over the badly ridden;. Snada. There was as high as 40 to 1 laid against Carey's filly-in spots. Jaunty was destroyed this morning on the advice of Dr. Sheppard. The eminent veterinary surgeon found on examination that the Ingoldsby lilly's left ' shoulder was broken in several places and said that there was very little hope of saving her for a useful ! career in the stud as was intended by Mr. Laudeman. ' G. Burns will not be permitted to ride on Metropolitan tracks for a while. It has develojied that he , was responsible for the disastrous accident to Jaunty In the lifth race yesterday. The diminutive brother . to the famous jockey, Tommy Bums, weights only sixty pounds, yet lie uses his whip on the slightest provocation in a recklessly vicious manner. The Brighton meeting has been one' long series of disaster, financially speaking, to the clubhouse commissioners. . Of the thirty or more who cut in at the . opening, only six have survived and they are in a class by themselves. A perusal of their books would i make the niost hardened poolroom proprietor turn i green with envy. Of the two jockeys who fell in the last race, Walsh sustained a fractured collar bone, while ! Sewell again, had a lucky escape from serious injury. Paul J. Rainey, who - is at present in Newport, is i convalescing after an illness of two weeks' duration. He states that he will be at Saratoga on the ; opening day. Eleven carloads of horses were shipped to Saratoga last night. Two cars were occupied by Fred Burlew's charges and one each by those of James McLaughlin, J. Fitzsimntons, Thomas Hitchcock, Jr., George J. Long, W. A. Dewees, J. P. Mayberry, Will Wallace, W. O. Scully and O. W. Deppeler. J. E. Madden shipped two carloads for himself and one for F. H. Hitchcock. "Jack" Joyner will send up nine horses belonging to August Belmont and an equal number the property of Sydney Paget and E. It. Thomas. T. C. .McDowell will ship a carload. Salvidere was not included in -the Madden shipment, being left ltchiml to start in the two-year-old handicap tomorrow. Probable Field for Saratoga Handicap PROBABLE FIELD FOR SARATOGA HANDICAP. Farcical Steeplechase Race at Latonia: Four of the Six Starters Leave the Course and Jim Bozeman Has it Easy ; ' ! ' , . . . i i ! i ; FARCICAL STEEPLECHASE RACE AT LAT0NIA. Four of the Six Starters Leave the Course and Jim Bozeman Has It Easy. Cincinnati, O., August 3. Tlie steeplechase over the short course, which was the spectacular feature of a good card at Latonla this afternoon, resulted in tlie most disappointing contest of the season and came in for a good deal of adverse criticism from spectators. An even half dozen faced tlie starter with Subador the natural favorite on past performances. However, tlie market quickly became active on others besides tlie logical choice. Byrne of Roscrea and Jim Bozeman were most in demand. The former was considered a good thing by his owner, J. S. Bratton, who came here from St. Louis to wager heavily on his candidate. Jim Boze-inan was pounded down several figures from his high price. After a short delay at the post occasioned by tlie actions of Jim Bozeman, they were dispatched to a fair start with Jim Bozeman showing tlie way and the others closely grouped nntll tlie third obstacle was reached. Here a slight dip occurs. Jim Bozeman made the dip successfully and jumped the obstacle In faultless style, but the others with the exception of Ohio King, went around the wing. This left the contest a farce.. Jim Bozeman had little opposition from the badly ridden Ohio King and won as his rider pleased. The others, with the exception of Byrne of Roscrea, regaiued the course and came home many seconds after the first two bad crossed the finish. Subador, proving best, secured third place. A bid crowd surrounded the judges' stand after the finish and when the official bell was rung, hooted and jeered, seemingly being under the impression that the judges would call it no contest or declare bets off. The rider of Byrne of Roscrea acknowledged that he had carried the others out; but explained that he was unable to keep the horse in the course. His statement was accepted and it was corroborated by a number of horsemen who added that "Bratton had not cooled out long after the last race as a result of the big liet. he nude n the llJ"WJy Tv day's mishap will prqbably75tuse "a change to lit? ! made in the steeplechase course. After Wee Lass' victory, owner Marshall became Involved In an altercation with C. A. Hbllenbur.h. Marshall complained to the judges that Helleniiush had threatened to bid up Wee Lass if her owner started her again in a seliing race. The judges will investigate tlie alleged threat. Tlie judges were of a mind to disqualify Alta McDonald for interference to Rabbit;' and punish jockey Nicol, but when they 'questioned Griffith that rider said that he had been mostly to blame for the slight bumping that occurred. Jockey I). Hall has announced his Intention of quitting the saddle. He has trouble with .'lis stomach, caused by reducing. He will join the ranks of owners and purchased today at private terms the two-year-old AVebber from W. A. Smith. II. MeCarren announced his intention of retiring Florlzel for awhile for his poor performance today. Two two-year-olds by Pink Coat, tlie property of II. Woodford, died while being shipped with two others front Lexington here.. Jockey Nicol stated today that he had been offered the mount on Old Honesty In the Futurity, but for the present had not accepted. He reiterated trainer Phillips' statement that lie would ride here during the Saratoga meeting. N. Becker, the bookmaker arrived here from New York today. He says that L. A. Cella is a big loser on his booking ventures In the east and that Instead of the numerous books Cella Is credited with controlling lie has three books on. Becker came here to book for Cella during the remainder of this meeting. Lady March was sold to W. R. Hall for $300 before the racing began. Dead Heat at Fort Erie DEAD HEAT AT FORT ERIE. Buffalo, N. Y., August 3. Only one favorite was , successful at Fort Erie today, and he only partially ' as he was compelled to divide the purse. In the ! . long distance race at a mile and a half, Doliuda was Installed the public choice at odds-ou and on form it looked as If the race was a gift to the old Donald I A. gelding. . After going a halt mile he went to tlie front and made every post a winning one up to the ; last sixteenth, where he was joined by Chanida and I from there on to the finish, it was nod for nod. In , the final stride they nodded together and the judges 'were unable to separate them. Neither of the owners i desired to run olf the dead heat so tlie purse was , divided. La Gloria, which was purchased out of tlie fifth l race on Thursday by J. B. Dunn, changed hands ' again this afternoon, P. J. Williams buying her for ' $1,000 an advance of $200 over what Dunn paid for her. Starter Mars Cassidy returned to New York yesterday to spend a couple of days with his family prior to his departure for Saratoga. Reach Agreement as to Kentucky Dates: Schedule is Arranged in New York Subject to Approval of State Racing Commission REACH AGREEMENT AS TO KENTUCKY DATES. Schedule Is Arranged in New York Subject to. Approval of State Racing Commission. If the Kentucky State Racing Commission ratifies the astion or the track owners, and It probably will, the question of dates for the remainder of the sea- son at Latonla and Louisville Is settled. Joseph L. Rhinock, representing the Latonla Jockey Club. Matt-. J. Winn, representing the New Louisville Jockey Glub, which controls Churchill Downs, and Louis A. Celia, the principal owner of the Douglas Park track, met at the Imperial Hotel, New York, Thursday evening and, after a long conference, announced that they have agreed upon the following arrangement of dates, subject to the approval of the Kentucky State Racing Commission: The present meeting at Latonla to close on Saturday, Septemler 1. Douglas Park to open on Monday, September- 3 and continue to Saturday, Septemlor 15. The Kentucky State Fair to open at Churchill Downs Monday, September 17 and continue until Saturday, September 22. There will lxj some running races for small purses during the fair. Douglas Park to open Monday, September 21 and. continue to Saturday, September 20. Churchill Downs to open Monday, October 1 and continue to Saturday, October. 20. ; Latonla to open on Monday, October 22 and continue, to Saturday, November 17. This arrangement will add eighteen days to the present meeting at Latonia, which was scheduled to close August 11. It will give Douglas. Park and Churchill Downs eighteen days each and will give Latonla, twenty-four days for its fall meeting. Between the closing of the fall meeting at Latonia and the opening of the winter racing season In New Orleans, which will be at the Crescent City Jockey Club's track on Novemler 2-1, there arc five days. It is not improbable that these dates will be occupied by Lexington. SecreUry W. C. Scott has said that, the Kentucky Racin;. Association would, give a fall meeting of five or sis days If a suitable schedule could,, be arranged. Cincinnati, O., August 3. The announcement that an understanding had been n'achel on the date question was well received by the hotscnien at Latonla. Many, however, would have preferred- the meeting here to continue and that a fall meeting be dispensed with. It would have effected a saving In shipping expenses to and. from Louisville. John Haclimelstcr says he will slortly go. to Louisville and assume active duties at Douglas Park. "We may give some stakes, but tils has not been officially decided on yet," said he. "Our officials will , be submitted to the Western Jockey Club for approval at its meeting Monday." Asked concerning license, he said: "Our meeting will be held under Western Jockey Club government and all owners not having a license from that body will naturally have to procure one from it." Max Samel-son was among today's visitors. He stated that the Lexington track would be sold in the near future. More Money for Purses at Ascot MORE MONEY FOR PURSES AT ASCOT. "Manager J. W. Brooks has declared himself as opposed to increasing the number of stake offerings for next season at Ascot and in favor of increasing the added money offerings," says the Los Angeles News. "In this manner he believes that a strong bid can be made for the pick of the eastern horses or the winter race meeting. This plan probably will be adopted by the directors- when they make up the stake boot for next season. It should be a winner, as eastern horsemen prefer Ascot to any other winter race meeting and the added Inducement should decide them In favor of the local race course."
