CHICAGO, TUESDAr, AUGUST 7, 1906. PRICE 5 OEKTS Saratoga Season Opens: Second Largest Attendance in the Aristocratic Association's History SARATOGA SEASON OPENS. SECOND LARGEST ATTENDANCE IN THE ARIS-TOCRATIC ASSOCIATION'S HISTORY. Dandelion Wins the Saratoga Handicap, with Tangle Second $20,000 Is Refused for Her Uncommon Mistake in Official Stake Book. Saratoga, N. Y., August C. The aristocratic Saratoga Racing Association Inaugurated Its sixth season of racing today under the most brilliant auspices. It was a memorable opening day In every respect. Excepting on one occasion, Saratoga ' Cup day of last season, the attendance and the number of looks in operation (204), far surpassed any previous record. The card was a splendid one and was fully sustained in interesting sport. Francis It. Hitchcock's pair. Dandelion and Tangle, were first and second In the big stake fixture, the Saratoga Handicap, at a mile and a quarter. From the start they had the situation well in hand and when called on came away simultaneously In the stretch. Tha president of the Saratoga Association declared to win with Dandelion, the announcement being posted at 3:10. His seeoud string. Tangle, with Miller up, was a formidable combination and experts waxed enthusiastic over the wonderful showing made by this magnificent daughter of Meddler and Hundspun. The Swartz Brothers of New York, who bought Bat Masterson from J. E. Madden In the spring, forthwith made an offer of $20,000 for her. but Mr. Hitchcock smilingly declined it. The running of the favorite, Bedouiu, was inexplicably bad. His owner and stable connections were visibly disturbed and chagrined over the total lack of speed shown by the Meddler gelding, which was last almost throughout, and a very bad last, at that. The. Picket seemed to lack early speed to an unusual degree, and did not loom up as a contender until at the very last, nnd then only for third place, which he lost by a few Inches. One of the pleasing features of the running was Bavena's meteoric flight of speed. At the end of a mile John Sanford's beautiful lllly had taken a .'decided lead and looked all over the winner, but tired from lack of condition. The Saratoga Steeplechase was won easily by Charles Pfizer's four-year-old hay colt Herculoid, by Savile Harpist, after being backed from 8 to 5 to 1. The fact that Herculoid was eligible to this race was not generally known until the official program made Its apiiearance this afternoon. He had been sent out in the entries on Saturday night, hut those .who held stake books of the Saratoga meeting or had perused the official entries as published in the Racing Calendar, were of the impression that the horse to start would be the nine-year-old chestnut gelding Herculean, by Watercress Hana. It was explained that a mistake had been made by an assistant in the office of Secretary Andrew Miller who had been entrusted with the work of revising the proof of the stake book. This printer had misspelled the name and in attempting to correct it. the careless reviser had made it Herculean and had given the pedigree of that horse. Herculean has not started in any race since he fell In the Empire Steeplechase at Brooklyn on Saturday, May 30, 1003. He was then the property of Ii. V. Bell. He had never won a steeplechase race and he was in such bad shape after his fall that Jimmy McCormlck, who was training him. presented him to superintendent Norton of the Sheeps-head Bay track. If he Is not dead, he is now doing chores between the shafts of a cart. Herculoid was the name which came to Daily Racing Form in the entries from Saratoga Saturday night. Reference to the official stake book of the Saratoga Racing Association disclosed the fact that Herculedli and not Herculoid appeared as eligible to the Saratoga Steeplechase and the Bever-wyck Steeplechase Handicap likewise. Herculoid's name and pedigree not being mentioned in the book. A like condition of affairs was found to exist In the list of entries as published in the Rncing Calendar, the official organ of the Jockey Club. Inquiry was made of Dally Racing Form's correspondent if notice of a correction from Herculean to Herculoid had accompanied the entries or been posted at the Saratoga track. He said he had no knowledge of such correction and that the lists as given out by the entry clerk very plainly put the name nercu-loid. It was too late to get into communication with the secretary of the Saratoga Racing Association and Daily Racing Form, following the official stake book and the Racing Calendar, made it Herculean and got In wrong. It does seem peculiar, however, that the mistake was not discovered by the Secretary of the Saratoga Racing Association or some of his assistants in time to make a correction in the last Racing Calendar which was published on Thursday, August 2. John Carroll is Defeated at Fort Erie JOHN CARROLL IS DEFEATED AT FORT ERIE. Buffalo, X. Y., August 0. In spite of the hot weather a large crowd was In attendance at Fort Erie today. It was ladies' day and this was largely responsible for the crowd. The card was an exceptionally good one and the finishes were In a majority of the races close and exciting. Only two favorites won however. The disappointment of the day was the defeat of John Carroll in the handicap, the feature of the card. Although assigned the top weight of 12!) pounds, 3 to 5 was readily accepted by the supposedly wise ones. At the weights. Gold Enamel proved to be much the best. He ran In n contending position behind Scotch Plume until in the- last eighth when he moved up rapidly and caught the tiring Scotch Plume and outgamed her to the end. Peter Paul ran In improved form and finished third a head in front of John Carroll. Jockey Helgesen was suspended for six days for rough riding In the fifth race. He had the mount on Edward Wilder and in making the turn into the stretch carried Charlie Gilbert to the extreme outside. W. J. Young today purchased from W. Walker the three-year-old hay filly Request, by Rensselaer Emma Pickwick, for $000. Shewon the sixth race In her new owner's Interest. Secretary W. O. Parmer returned today from Nashville where he made arrangements to ship his vearlings, along with those of E. S. Gardner, to Saratoga to be sold. E. Whelan is the latest to get the Saratoga fever. He shipped Cohmosa and Ossineke to that track today. O'connor's Success in Germany O'CONNOR'S SUCCESS IN GERMANY. Winnie O'Connor, the American jockey, is showing the German- jockeys some things about riding of which they never dreamed. At the recent Hamburg meeting he won every stake race hut one and he had no mount In that race or he probably would have made a clean score. Largely due to the American trainer, George Walker, and the American jockey, O'Connor, the Weinberg stable stands away , at ths head of the list of winning owners In Germany. Meadowbreeze Only Winning Favorite: Steeplechase a Farce - Fred Cook to Go East - Nicol Will Ride at Saratoga MEADOWBREEZE ONLY WINNING FAVORITE. Steeplechase a Farce Fred Cook to Go East Nicol Will Ride at Saratoga. Cincinnati, O., Augnst C. Followers of form nnd favorites had many surprises at Latonia today. Meadowbrecze, in the condition race, the feature of the card, was the only one to come to the relief of the talent. His victory was not clean cut and with better handling, Wee Lass would have triumphed over him. The steeplechase was a farce. Only two of the six starters covered the course without mishap. Class Leader, unextended, led all the way and came home a snug winner lefore the favorite nnd badly ridden Dalesman. Solon, which had been accorded heavy support, was a strong contender until he bolted at the third fence. Billy Wake and Profitable also ran out. This left the race between Class Leader, Dalesman and nare-foot and they would have finished in this order but for the fact that the latter bled, enabling Billy Wake, which had resumed the course, to overhaul him and get third money., Fred Cook contemplates departure from here next Saturday. "I will meet my family at Chicago next Sunday and leave at once for Saratoga, where I will rest up until the beginning of Sheepshead Bay," he said. "Six of my horses were shipped to the Bay from Louisville this afternoon where they will he raced tills fall. My stay there will be limited, an I intend to book at Louisville." Cook says Nicol will go to Saratoga next week and that he will ride on the New York tracks for the remainder of this season. J. S. Bratton contemplates a breeding bureau in Missouri somewhat similar to the one established recently by the Jockey Club in New York. He wants to Improve the breed of hack, coach, hunters and cavalry horses. Edward Corrlgan has donated the once famous Riley, which will be sent to Bratton's farm next week and Mose Goldblatt has promised to send Ralnland to the establishment to be used for stud purioses. ' J. L. Rhinock and Matt J. Winn returned today from New York. "We came to an understanding at once -and not over five minutes was wnsted coming to an agreement about the dates at Louisville and Latonia, said Mr. Winn of the conference with L. A. Cella. "I expect to see good racing at the Falls City. Dick Dwyer will do the starting at Churchill Downs and the same officials that were in the stand the last part of the spring meeting will again be in evidence." Jockey Nicol was too 111 to ride today. Tom Sayers,. acting for Lemp & Co., claimed Elastic from the fifth race, paying $1,000 for him. It. Porter, owner of Black Cat, claimed Nine out of the last race for $700. John Ferriss, Jr., who Is at present training Mc-Ilvaln, announced today that the horse would shortly be sold at auction. James Arthur, accompanied by jockey Heffernan, left last night for Saratoga, where he will remain several days. Jockey Sobel was to have ridden Billy Wake In the steeplechase, but the judges decided that he was incompetent and substituted Raines. Sobel will not be permitted to ride here. Tommy McGee returned today, from Fort Erie; He stated that John Carroll and Alma Dufour would be left at the Canadian course for some time. Protest Against Double License PROTEST AGAINST DOUBLE LICENSE. Cincinnati, 0., August 6. Secretary Hacljmelster's announcement that licenses from the Western Jockey Club will be necessary' for all trainers, jockeys and valets at the coming Douglas Park meeting has occasioned considerable complaint among the horsemen. At the beginning of the turf war a year ago last winter the American Turf Association acknowledged all licenses of horsemen In good standing for that current year. Now that peace Is supposed to have been established, howbelt with two Richmonds in the field, it hardly appears to be reasonable or right that the trainers and jockeys should he compiled to pay tribute to both. Licenses ought to be interchangeable good on the tracks of both factions Is the way the horsemen look at It. To compel them to take out new Western Jockey Club licenses for Douglas Park they would regard as an uncalled for and unnecessary expense. Possibly Mr. Hachmelster's statement may have been In the nature of a "feeler." He can rest assured that his ideas In the license matter, if enforced, will be the most unpopular move of the season. Condon Denies Wild Rumors CONDON DENIES WILD RUMORS. Saratoga, N. Y.. August 6. John Condon was hopping mad when he was told that a story had been sent out of New Orleans to the effect that the meetings of both clubs in that city the coming winter would be held at the City Park track and that the Crescent City Jockey Club would not spend any money on the Fair Grounds plant for the reason that the lease would expire shortly. "The Crescent City Jockey Club will hold Its meeting at the old track, as usual." said Mr. Condon. "We may not spend a great deal of money in Improvements there this coming winter, but next year we intend to build extensively. The Crescent City Jockey Club's lease on the plant has yet twenty years to run." Ample Warning to the Rough Riders AMPLE WARNING TO THE ROUGH RIDERS. Saratoga, N. Y., August G. Hanging conspicuously in the Jockeys' room at the track is the following printed in bold letters on a large card: All steeplechase jockeys are hereby notified that the next case of foul riding reported by the Stewards will be punished by withdrawal of the license of the Jockey found guilty of such foul riding. By order of the Stewards of the National Steeplechase and Hunt Association. Steeplechase Meetings Are Sanctioned STEEPLECHASE MEETINGS ARE SANCTIONED. Stewards of the National Steeplechase and Hunt Association have granted dates for steeplechase meetings to the Patapsco Hunt Club of Howard County, Maryland, at Plnilico Saturday, September 1. and Monday, September 3; and to the Berkshire Hunt Club of Lenox, Mass, at Lenox, Monday, September 3. No Contract; No Action NO CONTRACT; NO ACTION. Steeplechase jockey T. Donohue made complaint to the Stewards of the National Steeplechase and Hunt Association that Colonel Robert Neville had refused to pay him $114.32 salary and ten per cent, of the International Steeplechase purse amounting to $101.r0. The Stewards advised the jockey that they could take no action in the matter since lie had failed to file with them a contract. What Was Owing to Barney WHAT WAS OWING TO BARNEY. No More Messenger Service to the Ring: Odds for Women Are Now Laid in the Grandstand at Latonia - the Dollar Book Question NO MORE MESSENGER SERVICE TO THE SING. Odds for Women Arc Now Laid in the Grandstand at Latonia The Dollar Book Question. Cincinnati, O., August C. The recent departure of the management hero in abolishing Its grandstand messenger, service to the liettlng. ring, and permitting the messengers under a sufficient guarantee bond to lay the odds In the stand for women speculators. Is. to all appearances working satisfactorily. Considerable discrimination is used in choosing from among: the ,'mariy candidates for these positions. As each, messenger is required to deposit with the association $."00 in cash a3 bond, ample protection Is afforded, as few of the occupants of the grandstand bet more than $5 at the outside on any particular race. From twenty to tweny-two messengers have been handling the grandstand patronage .so .far more, they claim, than caii make a profit' out of the business unless " It may le on Saturdays and .holidays. The chief difficulty encountered in the employment of this plan seems to be-.a disposition on the part of some of tiie messengers ;to assume too. much on the .privilege, granted ami' to" use language In discussion with patrons that would not lit in with drawing room surroundings. Manager Young, however, has taken that mutter in hand; and hereafter tiie men who expect to quote odds in (he .grandstand will have to observe the" usual canons of courtesy -and politeness. This catering to ' women speculators has always been a thorn ' In the side of racetrack managers. A majority of the women who go racing want to have siime little' pecuniary interest in the results.. Most ot them' make modest wagers merely for the excitement of the tiling. As a rule, oii even the biggest" and best regulated tracks, they have "been up agaihst'lt" in their dealings with the messengers who have lie.en sadly addicted to the habit of either welching entirely or else falsifying odds and onttalklng the women turf followers when it came to an argument. 'The same difficulty formerly existed In Chicago, and It has long been a problem that has exercised the serious attention of the eastern racetracks. There Is little doubt but that tile laying Of jodds in the stand offers more protection to "patrons than the messenger plan, but the ways of ;tliese persons are often devious and uncertain, aid any system of taking care of this end of racetrack speculation needs sharp and constant supervision Of equaljrir greater Importance than the messenger questlon.'-'aid especially on the western turf where the volum of business Is comparatively light, is the; dollar or .field book. Each track operates from two to fonr of these hooks which cater to persons whb' uipally bet not more than one dollar on a horse. Whei racing nourished in Chicago, with the big -jrftendances there, and the large amounts of money wagered in the ring, the dollar books were both a convenience and a necessity. But down along the . line the speculation is not of such volume that the boobs In tile ring cannot handle the dollar offerings. In fact a majority of them would be glad to have the "dollar play" as It would help to round up their books. The Innovation of doing away with the dollar books was tried at New Orleans last winter and it proved very successful and decidedly popular. That the abolishment of these books on any racetrack would be a popular move cannot be doubted, for they offer oVlds that average forty per cent, less than those quoted in the ring, so that the man who desires to chase his dollar up and dawn the board has small chance to break into the Tanks of the plungers. Under conditions where tiie letting ring can handle this dollar pl.1y. and would lie willing to do so. It would be a popular move and a benefit to the small speculator to put the dollar books out of commission. The small loss of revenue would be more than made up in increased attendances and in increased business In the big ring. That, at any rate, is the opinion of some of the bookmakers who carefully watched the experiment at City Park last winter. Twenty Leading Jockeys TWENTY LEADING JOCKEYS. The money bet by the" liacker and the bookmaker is added together and divided equally when a dead heat occurs. In the case of Dolinda a net loss accrued to his backers so that for' each dollar bet on him they were entitled to but seventy-six cents back at average odds. Webb and others. Chicago and elsewhere. Coupling King Cole and Van Ness as an entry was an error. They did not run as a coupled entry In the cast, although they would do so in the west. In the case of the race of August 2, all straight ami place bets were lost in any event and the only practical question that could be raised is whether a Hildreth entry bet to show won or lost. As a matter of fact and on the ground that an entry is' one or more horses, one Hildreth entry did show and one did not. Apparently this situation points to a draw for show bets. Inner W. Durker's br. ni, by Pontiac Garoga. btart good. Won ridden out. Ringer in the Derby RINGER IN THE DERBY. The history of the turf contains many stories of fraud, but none more audacious and impudent than that associated with the Derby of 1844, which has been described as the most sensational race on recordat least in its developments. The. Derby of that year was won, as the records tell, by "Mr. A. Wood's Running Rein, by Saddler, out of Queen Mab, by Duncan Grey," ridden by Mann. The same horse had won a two-year-old race at Newmarket in the previous autumn, and it was then rumored that he was a year older than was claimed, and when he romped in first in the Derby Colonel Peel. Whose hose Orlando ran second, promptly lodged an objection against the winner and obtained an Injunction against the payment of the stakes to Mr. Wood until the dispute had been settled in the law courts. Messrs. Weatherby accordingly paid the stakes into court and left Mr. Wood and Colonel Peel to fight the matter out. Colonel Peel's contention was that the winner of the Derby was none other than Maccabbeus, a four-year-old horse bred by Sir Charles Ibbetson, and thus disqualified by age for the Derby. So zealously and successfully did he and Lord George Bentinck collect evidence that when the great action Wood against Peel came up for hearing before Baron Al-derson at Westminster, they were in a position to prove their tcase up to the hilt. The case created much excitement. The court was crowded to suffocation. Hundreds were unable to gain admittance and feeling ran dangerously high. After counsel had opened the case for the plaintiff, ; the Judges very sensibly suggested: "Produce your horse and let him be examined by experts. That is the best answer to the whole question," and the case was adjourned for the production of Running Rein on the following day. When the next day came, however, plaintiff's counsel had to confess that the horse was nowhere to be found It had been spirited away. Whereupon Baron Alderson was furious. "This is horse stealing," he exclaimed, "a .case for the Central Criminal Court; and if I try the parties and they are convicted, I'll transport them for life, to a dead certainty." Under the circumstances Mr. Wood withdrew his action, stating that a gross fraud had been practiced on him by his rascally trainer. A verdict was given for Colonel Peel and Orlando was declared winner of the 1844 Derby in place of the fraudulent Running Rein, exposed and deposed. London TId-Blts. .
